Agent Allium finished a clean-up call and glanced back at the pitiful recruit behind her.
"Sorry to break up…that, but we have to get back and report. From what I just heard, Boss is not too happy that we disrupted the schedule." She stated, emotionless. While she had been trained not to show it, she wasn't entirely okay with the killing part of her job.
Shinichi coughed, slightly embarrassed, and mumbled out an 'understood.' He jumped off of the thief, who was still shocked at the encounter.
"I uh, I don't know what came over me. I'll come along." the detective replied, getting an incredulous look from KID.
While aware that he was not in the best frame of mind, the child's rational mind took over and scolded him. He would need to become better at this.
Ally began to gather any extenuating evidence and walk to the roof. When left alone, the two rivals locked eyes yet again.
"I was right. What did you get yourself into, detective?" KID asked quietly, "I know you aren't fine with it. Your reaction earlier is enough evidence." He looked worried, which only made the detective feel worse.
"It wasn't much my choice," he admitted, "I know I already said this, but I really am sorry that you were dragged into this. Please, leave before you are involved too. I'll try my best to avoid your mention during the report." He adopted a sad gaze as he stared at the teen before him.
KID looked like he was deliberating heavily on something, "Here's my number," he said while handing over a slip of paper he had scribbled onto, "I won't give you my real name now, but assuming you also have an illegal identity, I feel less worried by giving it to you. Please don't take this on by yourself. I understand, trust me."
Shinichi briefly looked at the number in his hand before stuffing it into his pocket and muttering a thank you. Ally called loudly from above, and he was forced to leave. He wasn't sure about how he felt at the moment. He had more in common with KID than his best friend.
"Why the hell would you kill them?!" the comment was only one of many, unfortunately. Both child and agent had been subjected to a verbal barrage as soon as they completed their report. Jodie was furious, and Shinichi felt it was unjust. Yes, maybe they had gone a bit ahead of schedule, but they were going to kill them eventually anyway, right? Listening longer to the rant, he realized his misconception. The Boss wasn't mad at them for their actions, she was proud of that. She was angry at them forcing her to cut the pay of the two ground workers assigned.
"We have a specific pyramid of power here, much like a corporation. While we aren't technically legal, we are a branch of the FBI and are, therefore, a job. Think of it as you just stole another person's assignment; now we can't pay them for it." Jodie sighed deeply and smiled down at the small detective, "I'm sorry you had to witness something so unsightly for your first assignment, but I hope that it didn't discourage you."
Shinichi was thankful that he wasn't in trouble. He still wasn't sure what to make of his underwhelming reaction and was ready to go home and forget. It bothered him that he had subconsciously desensitized himself to the point where the sight of murder didn't affect him in the slightest.
Finally home, the child snuck into his bedroom. It was around 3 am, and he really needed to talk with someone. He slowly began saddening himself further as he realized that he didn't really have anyone to talk to. A crinkle in his pocket alerted him back to the small slip of paper he had received earlier. It had a sloppy set of numbers and a quick doodle of a KID face.
Now, Shinichi knew this was the absolute worst idea ever, but he was also aware that this was likely the only person he would be able to talk about anything with. And, he had already seen him less than perfect earlier, right? He seemed sincere when giving him the number.
After deliberating for a few more minutes, the detective finally punched in the numbers and hoped desperately that the thief was still awake.
'beep' "Little Detective? Why are you calling so late? You okay?" a voice sounded on the other end.
The poor thief was forced to wait as Shinichi had a mini breakdown. 'Oh no, this was a mistake. He sounds tired, I did a bad nononono' He finally caught himself and managed a quick hello. He must of sounded pitiful because the other sounded even more concerned than he had before, "I know it's late. I'm sorry. I didn't know who to talk to." he trailed off.
"It's absolutely fine, detective." KID responded kindly.
Something about the nickname he had been given struck a nerve with him. He didn't feel like a detective much these days, "Call me Kudo…even Shinichi, anything but that, please." he spoke quickly, sounding a bit too desperate for his liking.
The thief fell silent and then spoke evenly, "Kuroba Kaito, call me Kaito, please. I assume since you're revoking your detective status, I can trust you with a secret as you have, right, Shinichi?" he sounded hopeful.
The child was silent for a moment, processing the information. Finally, he replied, "Thank you, you have my word, Kaito."
Smiling on his end, Kaito said, "now, what did you call for?"
