You're an idiot, Tommy Oliver.
Those five simple words were forever engrained in Tommy's head, destined to repeat like the broken record that was his life.
He was a defenseless gazelle being circled by a pack of ravenous hyenas, those of course being his mother, his daughter, and Kimberly.
The three women that he could honestly say he ever loved.
"You have some nerve showing up alive after that little stunt you just pulled," Kimberly stood before him with her arms crossed, displaying all of the dominance she knew she had in his life. "I should kill you!"
Tommy lay dormant on his couch, not that he could move much anyway. Getting blown off an island wasn't exactly part of the plan when he agreed to join Anton Mercer on his excavation. The broken leg, 2 fractured ribs and clavicle, as well as the mild concussion, and dislocated shoulder were mere surface wounds to the beating he was taking from the three ladies in his life.
"Aunt Kim?" Tommy's five-year-old daughter looked up at the former pink ranger, hazel eyes growing larger and moist.
Well, shit…
"I'm sorry, kiddo," Kimberly gave the young girl a small smile, forgetting for a moment that there was a child in the room, "I didn't mean it."
She totally did.
"Kylie," Tommy's mother, Carol, cleared her throat, "What Kimberly is trying to say is that your dad wasn't exactly being careful during his trip. He scared us because we didn't know where he was."
Carol stared down at her son with the same dominance that Kimberly possessed. While she may not have directly given him life, she felt the authority could still fall on her to take it away. After all, adoption or not, he was her son until the very end. If he ever disappeared for 6 days again she would be the first to pull out the noose.
Tommy did his best attempt at a nod, not that his neck could move more than a few millimeters anyway. His eyes were red and puffed out like a pufferfish, a special thanks to whatever the fuck was floating in the murky water off the island. The heavy medication that was circulating through his bloodstream left him seemingly inebriated. Even if he wanted to, he had no way to fight back. Sometimes it's best sit there and look pretty. There was never any winning when it came to them anyway. He'd save his energy for his next fuck up.
The 50 foot fall into the Indian Ocean was like diving into a pool of cement. It was a miracle he wasn't more seriously injured. If only a miracle would come save him from his eardrum working overtime. He wasn't conscious for long after he hit the nearly freezing water temperatures. Even now he could faintly recall the image of his mother, his darling daughter, and Kimberly floating inside of his head before he succumbed to the darkness.
He wasn't sure what the latter meant just yet.
When he woke up at the hospital, wires and tubes sticking out of his bruised arms, his first thought fell to the ladies in his life. After that subsided and the pain emerged, all he could think about was getting to a damn phone to tell them that he was alive. Tommy didn't know how long it had been. A day? A month? 2 weeks. And the effects were still as fresh as day one.
Tommy made a weak attempt to speak, but all that came out was a raspy groan.
"Daddy?" Kylie took a step forward, her hand gently placed on his less injured shoulder.
Her touch was a remedial hum, soothing Tommy internally. Even if his face couldn't outwardly express it, he was smiling, beaming at his little girl.
The 28-year-old had reached success in his academics and career, but nothing had come close to Kylie. She was the epitome of perfection, the constant in his life when his relationship with her mom crumbled. He could never come to regret the ups and downs of his relationship with his ex-wife, Natalie, after all, she gave him the most precious gift. She was the one night stand that flipped his life upside down, giving him a daughter before he even knew how to properly boil an egg. While bouncing a baby on his lap while simultaneously working on his thesis wasn't in his plan, he nonetheless took full responsibility for his actions and stepped up. His marriage only came at a desperate attempt to keep his ex from having an abortion. He seems to recall her exact words being, "we get married or I'm terminating." So romantic, right? He couldn't say no, he wouldn't. And while his heart was never with her, he followed through because Natalie was insane enough to go through with it. She left him as soon as Kylie was born and he never looked back, in fact, he gave zero fucks. He had his daughter and he didn't have to share her.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Kylie looked to Kimberly, a soft expression on her face as she took the beaten form of her dad.
Kimberly came to her side, giving her a gentle but promising smile, "Of course he is." She looked to Carol who offered her an encouraging nod, "Your dad is the strongest man that I know. He'll be up and running with you in no time."
Kylie never had a reason to doubt her Aunt Kimberly. If she said he would get better then she believed her. After all, she was an adult and adults knew everything.
The former ranger tenderly stroked the young girls back, soothing her with small circles. Her prize was a loving hug from Kylie, the little girl with the golden brown hair that owned half of her heart.
The memory of finding out Tommy was going to have a baby was still as fresh as ever. Tommy had called her up while she was still living in Miami, working as an apprentice for Coach Schmidt. The news was surprising, but she was happy for him nonetheless. The time of hurt and heartbreak between the two over the letter lasted no longer than the amount of time it took for him to teleport his ass to Miami. Instead of sulking like he wanted to, he beamed himself to her dorm room where they hashed it all out. It was as amicable as it could be, putting aside the fact that Kimberly swore her life was an episode of 90210.
The letter guy was whatever, the Pan Globals were whatever, Miami life was whatever.. nothing was better than home, and for her, that was Angel Grove. Which is why she planted herself there and got a position at her old gymnastics studio as a coach about four years ago. Who could turn down a gold winning medalist? Ahem, that would be three-time gold winning medalist. In the words of Elle Woods, "What, like it's hard?"
Tommy lived a little ways off in Reefside, she tried to visit him as much as she could, but they both had their own life going. Reefside wasn't as close as everyone made it seem. Four hours can get rather boring when you have no one to share the drive with. She piled herself in the car with Zack and Adam during the holidays, but that was the extent of her visits.
When Carol called Kimberly up in near hysterics, informing her of an accident at the island Tommy was working at, Kimberly rushed over. Through muffled sobs, Carol explained that her son had been missing for days and there had been many failed attempts at locating him. While fighting to keep her composure in front of Tommy's daughter, Kimberly contacted Billy and asked for his services in locating their old teammate. Kimberly was both pissed and surprised to learn that Billy had installed fucking microchips inside of them. Luckily, that was all they needed to find good old Tommy Oliver in Madagascar.
Billy would live to see another day.
"Grandma?" Kylie turned to Tommy's mother, giving her a pout she knew she learned from her father, "Do you have to go back to your house?"
"I do, honey," Carol sighed, "Grandpa can't stay by himself for too long or he'll get in trouble just like your dad." She gave the girl a wink, causing her to smile. "But your Aunt Kimberly will be here with you until your dad gets better."
Kylie turned to Kimberly, a growing smile, "really?"
Kimberly nodded, returning a smile of her own, "Yeah, it'll be so much fun!"
The 5-year-old gave a few excited hops, the scenarios of what her weeks would look like with her aunt playing in her head. There was never a dull day when the two got together. While those days were a rare occasion because they lived so far away from each other, they were always filled with joy. That's something she could always count on.
Kimberly's heart fluttered in her chest, feeling the love for Tommy's daughter grow with every breath that she took. She couldn't not love her even if she tried. Tommy held a place in her heart, but that space was quickly consumed by the gorgeous little girl he helped create. Sure she once dreamed that one day she would be the one to have a family with the former green ranger, but those were just visions of a hopeless romantic teenager that was running on hormones and caffeine. This… This was real life, and it was better than she imagined. She was able to be the cool aunt and come and go as she pleased.
Kimberly was in the place in her career where she could afford to take some time off. Her girls had just won regionals and there was a break before nationals. When Mrs. Oliver asked if she could help out with Kylie, Kimberly didn't even think twice about it. She was already packing her bags before she was done hanging up the phone. Of course Jason, Trini, Rocky, and Aisha would be stopping by on their days off, but some time alone with Tommy and Kylie would be fun.
"I better get going," Carol sighed, walking over to her small luggage. She paused for a moment then turned to Kimberly, "Are you sure you'll be able to handle this? I know my son can be a little.. difficult."
Kimberly let out a feathery chuckle, "A little?"
He just got blown out of an island.
Carol shook her head, before stealing a glimpse of her seemingly comatose son and released an uneasy breath. A mother would always worry. She of course wrapped her granddaughter in a tight hug, promising her all of her love and another visit as soon as possible.
"Call me if you need anything, okay?" Mrs. Oliver told Kimberly. The former ranger nodded, giving the older woman a quick hug before she exited out of the front door.
"What do we do now?" Kylie turned to her aunt, her lips slanted together in thought.
Good question. This was the first time Kimberly was put in charge of a real human. At least more so than simply teaching gymnastics, even then, she was never really alone with her girls, there were always other coaches and assistants.
"I don't know," Kimberly shrugged, "Are you hungry?"
What did she eat anyway? Baby food? Wait… did she still wear diapers? Because that was not in the job description.
Kylie ran her tiny fingers through a long lock of straight hair, "I could eat."
"Okay, well, what does your dad have in the fridge?"
Kylie's nose wrinkled, telling Kimberly that it was apparently nothing edible.
Kimberly turned to Tommy who was still trying to mumble something close to a word. She took the nearest blanket and gently placed it on top of him, "What am I going to do with you, Tommy Oliver?"
