Chapter 10
"No one can be the cure." Face snapped. "We're all just part of their solution."
"They who?" Thomas asked. A thought crossed his mind and he wanted to ignore it but it bugged him too much.
"Who ever put us here. Do you thing we all just magically appeared?"
"You know something." Thomas accused. "More than you're willing to admit. I mean, you don't get hurt, you are the smartest one here, and you've spent the night outside and lived to tell about it. You're the only one here who doesn't care about the rules. Because you know you wont get into trouble. You're one of them, aren't you?"
Silence followed. Face quickly glanced at Newt and then stared at Thomas.
"When you were stung, you said you were one of them." Newt reminded him. Thomas faltered and thought for a minute. He rubbed his face and sighed.
"Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. You're right. I don't know. This is all just so crazy." He grabbed his own hair and looked at Face. She looked out at the ocean blankly.
"It's just that." Thomas tried and stepped closer to Face. He turned her to look at him. "I had this dream…" then he faltered again. "Never mind. It was just a stupid dream."
"What did you dream Thomas?" she asked.
"I felt… in the dream… I mean I knew." He didn't know how to explain. "I was convinced that your life was in danger."
"Well you thought it was, she had that episode and we thought she was dying or something." Newt said.
"Yeah." Thomas remembered. But it still felt strange. Face stared at him for a long time.
"You're right." She suddenly said. Thomas went cold and Newt stared at her. "About everything. Except that I'm on their side."
"What?" Thomas mumbled. Newt kept an eye on her, wondering what the hell she was doing.
"I really hope I can trust you, Thomas. If I can't I will kill you myself." She said and took a few steps away. Thomas stared at Newt who didn't know what to say.
"Trust me about what?" Thomas asked.
"When the virus broke out they built walls around the cities to preserve the lives of the people." She started telling a story and it looked as if it was going to be a long one.
"When the virus broke out a lot of people died. The built walls around cities to keep them safe but people still got infected. It became a world epidemic. And then the UW or the U… United… Nations – UN devised a plan to save as many people as possible. They carefully transported all of the survivors to a secure location where they grouped people. Still in their countries of origin… Newt's and my parents came from… What was it again? Kingdom something. And we were placed together in a district. But all of us went to school together. They taught us basic studies. Things that we would need for the new world. The smarter kids were placed in advanced classes and everyone had to learn. And then everything changed. They…"
"Why are you doing this?" Newt interrupted, choosing his words wisely. "Is that why you brought us here? So you can tell him?"
Thomas threw a look at Newt. "You knew?"
"I know some things." He tried to save it.
"I can't believe this. My best friends have been hiding things from me."
"We couldn't tell you. It's dangerous for you to know."
"Everyone she's ever told has died." Newt justified.
"Except you." Thomas pointed out.
"Because she told me in secret. Where no one can see or hear anything. Like this place."
"What if everyone knows? They won't kill everyone." Thomas questioned.
"I don't know. I think they might." Face bit her lip.
"So, do you know about their plan? Where they are? What they want?"
"No." she leaned against the wall. "When we were all split up, they set me aside. They used my blood; they monitored my brain and used me. They thought I would forget like everyone else. But I didn't."
"Do you remember your parents?" Thomas finally asked.
"Yes." She said after a long silence. "It's not a convenient thing. I'm sitting with memories of a life I no longer have. A life I will never have. It's a burden. And it hurts like hell."
"We should probably go." Newt interjected. The sun seemed to be setting really fast.
"You have to pretend you don't know anything." Face told Thomas.
"Yeah. Or I'll die, right?"
"Yup."
"How could they be inside the Manor?" Thomas wondered. Face went blank and stared at him. "I mean, how can they be inside? How are they hiding?"
Face leaped forward and quickly kissed Thomas on the lips. "You are a genius!" she yelled. Newt frowned at the kiss and she disregarded it completely. "Yes we should go now." She kissed Newt and dragged them back into the water.
They swam down to the open door and back outside. The water was deeper than it was the morning and it took more effort. The beach was also shorter as the water was at high tide. The storm had drifted off and they ran through the streets to the Manor. They were dry by the time they reached the landing and climbed into the building. Face danced around the empty dock and into Newt's arms.
"You seem happy." He said, unsure of why.
"I had a great day." She grinned.
"Was it because you kissed Thomas? Or because you kissed me?" Newt had to ask. She had that whole Radical honesty thing and he was going to take advantage.
"You." She said and wrapped her arms around him. "I kissed him out of excitement. And it didn't mean anything."
"What is so exciting?" he asked.
"I don't know. But I will tell you once I have it all figured out."
They headed up to the cafeteria and dropped their bags by their table.
"Had fun with your Mistresses?" Patrick asked Face when he strutted past them.
"I'm to happy to even care what you mean." Face smiled at him.
"Don't forget the most important thing, Face. You can play with your toys all you want, but you are mine."
Her face fell and turned dark. She did that whole thing where it looked like she was growing a few inches taller. She stepped up to him and he quickly and effortlessly shoved her into the wall. She sunk to the floor and yelled in pain. Thomas and Newt was on him so fast. They shoved him away and stood guard in front of Face, ready to fight him if he got up again.
"She's not yours Patrick." Newt said sternly. "She doesn't belong to anyone."
"If she did, she would belong to us." Thomas added. Newt looked at him and nodded.
"If you touch her one more time…" Newt threatened.
"She'll kill you herself." Thomas said. "You know she can do it."
"She's just a little girl." Patrick stated. "I'm not scared."
"We will all come after you if you even think about touching her." Anna said from behind him. "We know she's special. She belongs to everyone."
The alarm went off and the building started to lock down for the night.
