Chapter 12

Both Newt and Thomas quickly looked at Patrick but he was using his hands to demonstrate something to a friend.

"Are you sure?" Newt asked.

"Yes." She snapped.

"What are we going to do?" Thomas asked.

"I," she stressed the word, "am going to take him to the roof and keep him there."

"No you're not." Newt argued.

"I'm the only one he will follow out there." She countered. "You need to lock the door behind me."

"I'm not going to do that. He's contagious." Newt said through clenched teeth.

"I'm the only one who's immune to it." She left her tray and moved across the room. Newt ran after her and stopped her in her tracks.

"It's too dangerous." Newt begged. "I'm not going to risk it."

"Would you rather have a contagious vampire stuck inside with everyone?"

While they argued, Thomas walked over to Patrick and his crew. He made small talk but was mostly ignored. Thomas grabbed a metal tray, stepped closer and smacked it with all his might over Patrick's head. Everyone looked at where the noise had come from and Face ran closer without another thought of her argument. Patrick fell down disoriented but quickly sprang up, unharmed.

Face jumped in between Thomas and Patrick.

"Sorry. Sorry." Face held her hands out in defense. "He's having a bad reaction to the vitamins." She spoke quickly. "He should just go sleep it off and stop taking them from tomorrow. I'm really sorry. I should have seen it."

"Were you too busy making eyes at the new boy?" Patrick asked in a joking manner. The maltreatment completely forgotten.

"No. I was looking at you." She smiled shyly. She looked at Newt. "Take Thomas to your room. Do what is necessary." She said, hoping he would understand this time and that he would do what he's told.

"Yeah. Yeah." Newt nodded and pulled Thomas towards the elevator. Face stayed behind and checked Patrick's face. She glanced quickly at Newt as the elevator doors closed. Patrick kept his eyes on her, suddenly fixated by her.

"I haven't seen you all day." She said in the sweetest voice she could muster. "I missed you."

"You were playing with the new boys." Patrick sounded a bit aggressive. She grabbed his hand and pulled him away from anyone else.

"I was just showing them around." She pretended to be annoyed. "I don't want to talk about them anymore." She placed her hand on his shoulder and he cringed away from her touch.

"I fell down today. It hurts." He mentioned.

"Do you want me to look at it?" she pulled on the edge of his shirt but he pulled away again. His grip on her hand was so strong that he pulled her closer each time he stepped away.

"Maybe somewhere more private." She said sweetly and batted her lashes.

"Yeah." Patrick lost his focus again and became putty in her hands. She pulled him towards the elevator and pushed the highest button.

The elevator stopped and Newt stood in front of the door.

"We're going up." Patrick spat.

"I'll wait for it to come back." Newt said as he stared at Patrick and Face's linked hands.

"Or take the stairs." She suggested.

"Yeah." Newt bit his lip. He was scared for her but he hoped that she knew what she was doing.

The doors closed again and they went the last few levels up. Face walked towards the stairs to take the last set to the roof.

"Where are you going?" Patrick pulled her closer and held her uncomfortably close. She saw his teeth when he smiled as he leaned in for a kiss and she hoped that she was doing the right thing.

She pulled away but smiled sweetly.

"I want to show you something first." She held him at a distance.

"What?" he played along but kept his grip on her.

"Come with me." She pulled him up the stairs as her breathing became increasingly fast. She waited by the door and tried to listen for following footsteps but could hear nothing. She took a deep breath and then stepped out onto the roof with Patrick still clutching her hand.

"Woah." Patrick said as he saw the cityscape. He let go of her hand and walked to the edge. She turned and walked back to the door, hoping to catch it unlocked.

"Hey, what…" Patrick started but he saw her trying to take a run for it and raced back to her quickly. She heard the click of the door and turned back just as he reached her. He shoved her against the door and she held in her yelp.

"Where are you going?" he asked, particularly suspicious. He held her against the door and looked her straight in the eye.

"I just wanted to make sure that no one followed us." She tried. "We have to be quiet up here." She added in a whisper.

"Then you can't scream." He whispered and scratched gashes down her arm. She had to bite her lip to keep from crying out. She used all her strength and pushed him away. He slid back awkwardly and stopped against the railing. Face thought back to Concept studies and remembered seeing something about fighting techniques but it was another thing she wasn't wired to remember.

She stepped away from the door as he lurched at her again. She stepped out of his way just as he reached her and ran straight into the wall. She ran around him and tried to get to the door but he grabbed her and pulled her down. He scratched her as he pulled her closer. She kicked him and his head only bounced back. She kicked harder and got out of his grasp for a second. He was quicker and pulled her down and held her to the ground. He growled. Yes he growled.

He ripped her shirt open and bit into her skin. A bite actually stung and she screamed. She cut it short and tried to fight against the numbing effect that started spreading through her skin.

"You wanted me here alone…" Patrick said with blood dripping from his lips.

"Yeah, so she can kill you." Newt said with a gun in his hand.

Before Patrick could reach Newt, he fired the shot, straight into Patrick's head. The sound drifted off the roof but was silenced by the buildings shifting.

"Are you alright?" Newt asked Face.

"Get inside." She whispered. He saw the bite on her shoulder and felt his whole body go numb.

"What do I do?" he asked as he kneeled next to her.

"Inside." She breathed.

"Not without you." He cried.

She sighed. "Yes. Without me."

"No." he said quickly. Thomas showed up and stared at Patrick's limp body.

"What happened?" He asked and looked over at Newt and Face.

"Get him…" Face lost consciousness. Newt almost lost it. Thomas helped him up and reached for Face.

"I'll take her inside." Newt argued and picked her up.

"What was she going to say?" Thomas asked. He glanced at Patrick and then followed Newt inside. Newt was ignoring everything and heading down the stairs with determination. Thomas locked the door behind him and tried to keep up. Newt got out of the stairs at the hospital floor and carried Face to a bed.

"Is she going to become one of them?" Thomas asked. "Why did she pass out?"

"She lost a lot of blood." Newt said and started searching for bandages and spirits.

"Let me get Anna." Thomas turned to the door.

"No one can know about this, Thomas." Newt said. "Will you help me?"

"What if she gets sick?"

"She won't. She said so herself."

"Okay. Yeah, okay." Thomas closed the door and started helping.

Newt remembered things from watching the med-jacks a few times and started cleaning her wounds. Patrick had scratched a few layers of skin off her wrist and blood was oozing out. He cleaned it with thick towels and tried to stop the bleeding. Thomas cleaned her legs and bandaged her scratches there.

"Why would he scratch her?" Thomas asked curiously.

"I don't know." Newt wondered the same thing. It was become a big job to just contain the blood on her arms, and he was worried about her neck. When the two of then got most of it clean and bandaged, he started with her neck. It wasn't bleeding as much as they thought it would. Most of it was already drying.

"That's weird." Newt commented. He cleaned away the dry blood and found the mark was already halfway done healing.
