A/N:
This is the SPIRITUAL successor to my old, trashy fic Inverted. This time without smut! I think the story is pretty well explained her, so I won't be long. I just want to ask that you follow, fav, or most importantly: REVIEW. Thanks. The response will determine how much focus this gets.
OH! And for people that are here from my other fics, especially 'One, Two Punch!' or ['Insert Title of fem!AfOxIzuku Fic Here'], this isn't a romance fic. In fact, there's no ships here, really. In fact, this whole thing is just me having fun. Don't expect it to be as polished as my other fics, as it's mostly me playing around with a fun idea.
"So, you finally made it here."
The feminine voice seemed both distant and mockingly close to his face at the same time, echoing around the claustrophobic eternity that surrounded him. Percy was sure that this wasn't the realm of the dead; in fact, he had no idea where this... place? ...even was. He'd never seen it before; never heard the voice before, either. And yet it seemed oddly familiar...
"You really tried, you know that? You gave it your all, right up to the end. That's what I respect about you." The voice continued, "Dying the hero. Living the life of a hero. In every fucking way you were just a goody-two-shoes, smiling, innocent hero. It sickens me! How boooooring. Really? Rejecting godhood, being constantly selfless... honestly, just one time could you do something entertaining? You had so much potential and you wasted it pretending to be human! When you knew very well that you weren't in the slightest. You were more... so much wasted potential..."
Percy tried to pin down where the voice came from, but it seemed to always be both right in front of his face, and a mile behind his head. What the voice was saying didn't help either; the odd topic serving to unnerve the young demigod.
"WAAA~AAAASTED! Oh well, why not have a second chance, then? You'd like that. Maybe you can save allllll your friends this time and not get eaten by a primordial deity, eh? Yeah, you'd like another chance, wouldn't you."
Percy had to admit, it did sound quite enticing. If he-
"GREAT! You agree! So, let's get started, shall we? But let's make this fun." The voice said, cutting off Percy's thoughts as it rushed at what seemed like a hundred words a minute, "Well- No, wait! I'm going too fast! Introductions, introductions yes, yes, yes! I... am Khaos. The mother of all of reality. And you are Percy Jackson, right? And your reality just ended. How sad. So, let's get on with our previous topic, right? Right. The Fun. How about you spin the wheel, okay?"
A wheel suddenly appeared in front of Percy. Numerous words were written on each of the fragments, and each slice had an assigned color to make it pop. Like the wheel of prizes at a school fair he'd attended once. Though these prizes seemed... more like punishments. And others were just confusing. Wait, what were these anyway? What was Chaos getting at?
"World modifiers and conditions for your trek back through your life the second time around. They make it fun for me." Khaos responded, "Oh, and also you spelled my name wrong, it's with a 'k', not a 'c'. I know it's confusing."
What?! How did she know he was spelling her name wrong in his head? And... modifiers? What? Those sucked! 'Broken Legs?' No thanks. '14 Inch Penis?' Umm... could he- what? 'Centaur?' Well, that one was fine, but he'd rather not. 'Trombone Talent?' That one was just-
"Spin it, Percy."
OKAY OKAY! Geez... He spun the wheel. It twirled around and around in a kaleidoscope of colors. Spinning and spinning.
'Please be a good one!' He hoped.
"Please be a funny one." Khaos hoped.
It stopped.
""World of Predators?"" They both asked in unison.
"Oh man! This one is fun." Khaos screamed, "This is, like, the best outcome, really! Great job, Percy!"
'Yeah. Thanks...' He thought sarcastically, 'Wait, what does that even mean?'
"Oh! Well, basically: Gods aren't human. Never were. Demigods aren't, either. In this world, that fact is much more obvious."
'Huh?'
"In this world, Demigods and Gods treat humanity like monsters do. Fuck them, kill them, eat them... they don't matter at all. They're prey." Khaos said, "You'll like the taste of human meat, Percy! Oh, and enjoy the snake hair."
"Wait, what do you-"
Percy's vision went black.
Scritching, scratching, crackling noises filled his mind. The fog that surrounded his consciousness was only just beginning to clear, but it felt as if a fist had gripped his brain with the strength of a Laestrygonian Giant. Scratching, then cracking, then light. He saw light! He could hear, he could see, he could smell, he could taste! The fog was still there, and he wasn't quite in control, but he could tell what was self and what was other. And there were others. They were like him, but they weren't him. They weren't- no -they were like him he was- he looked like- he couldn't remember who or what he was but he knew he was something and that these things were the something... that he is? It was confusing to him, but he knew one thing for sure: they had to die. They were beasts, and he killed beasts. They were a mix of man and snake, inhuman, aggressive, and bestial. He opened his maw and bit down on the nearest one, inciting a riot amongst them as they fought for dominance. All of them, about sixteen in total, began a battle to the death as he shredded his first opponent and jumped to the next, locking in combat with them. His claws and teeth rended meat from their bones, and his coiling body snapped another's spine. There were only two left: himself, and a girl version of whatever... beast... they...
He was one of them.
Oh. My. Gods.
He was a monster, he had fangs and claws and the body of a snake and-
The girl attacked, striking at him with instinctual brutality, but he held her off, fighting until he was atop her, strangling her to the ground. But he wouldn't kill. Holding her down, he waited until her anger abated. Their eyes met, and both seemed to calm. He took note of the numerous cracked shells around them, and slime-like substance that covered their bodies, and came to the realization that he had just been born. This thing was his sister.
"Go on, finish her." A familiar voice called out, "You've humiliated her enough. Finish her, love, and we can get on with eating the bodies."
He turned to face the voice, his eyes widening at what he saw. There she was, his mother, Sally Jackson, with snakes for hair and a scaled tail for a lower body. She was a Gorgon. The thing that set him off most, however, was not her look, but rather, her look. The look she was giving him. A proud and loving smile, as she told him to kill his sister. He couldn't, and he showed it by shaking his head in the negative.
"No?" She asked, a curious look upon her face, "Why would you say 'no?' It's only natural."
He continued to be defiant, and let his sister go.
"Well then, how about you, dear? Kill him"
She, too, did nothing. Both stared at their mother in defiance, her lack of reaction scaring them. Until she laughed.
"TWINS! Oh goodness, twins!" She shouted, slithering over and scooping them into a hug, "So exceedingly rare! Twin souls, born in my clutch and living to the end of their first struggle of life. What a bond you two share, it must be incredible."
She quickly dragged them out of the basement they had been kept in and up into a building that seemed oddly familiar as well. It was as if he'd been here before but he couldn't place it. She was dragging them outside now and- OH! It was Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium! Of course! With all the friendly décor sitting around and the much more well-kept nature of this version of the place he hadn't noticed where he was!
'Considering the snake-hair and body, I should've just guessed, huh?' Percy questioned.
'Yup. You should've.' Khaos responded, much to Percy's chagrin.
She was there, with him, in his head. Great.
"TADAA!" His mother shouted, gesturing to the building and then to the wide open, blue sky, "Welcome to life! You'll find it's wonderful here."
He giggled at her enthusiasm. It was quite infectious! It was just like his mom, though, to say something so lovingly cheesy. His sister clearly shared his sentiment, as she, too, laughed along with their mother's antics.
"Oh, what darlings! Well, let's see... what should we call you?" She said, hand under her chin in mock thought, having already made a list of the best names for her children, "Maybe... oh! You really are a little conqueror, and you did defend your sister, so maybe... Alexander?"
Percy shook his head.
"Oh. You're a smart one! Already deciding what names sound good. Well, maybe... my little destroyer: Perseus!"
'Spot on, mom!' He thought happily, nodding in agreement with her choice, 'Though, why isn't she surprised I understand her?'
'Monsters and Gods are born with innate knowledge. Your sister understands as well. In a few days, you'll both start speaking. And then hunting.'
'Ok. I guess that... makes sense?'
"SO CUUUUUTE!" His mother shouted, interrupting his thoughts, "Okay, so... how about you? So gentle, a little shining light... maybe Clarisse?"
Percy violently shook his head in the negative, his sister turning to him before copying. The gorgon boy tried his best to vocalize his thoughts, only hisses coming out at first.
"Okaaaay. So that's not right. Maybe..." She said, taking out her list and going down, "Stella?"
Percy gave her a look between disappointment, confusion, and deference that seemed to say 'Okay... but not the best.'
"Well... how about..." His mother said, before a smile crossed her face, "Aemilia. ' Little Rival.' A name for one who struggles and fights to the end."
'I like that one! Good choice.' Percy thought.
'Agreed. Though, a better name would've been-'
'Shut it. I don't want this ruined. Mom's trying her best!'
The snake-haired girl beside him practically screamed out a hiss of, what he knew was, acceptance and happiness. Sooo... he had a sister. A sister! And he was a gorgon, with a snake body! Actually, didn't Medusa have legs in his world? Although, Euryale and Stheno both had snake bodies, so he guessed that made sense. Maybe it was the mist that hid their sister's true form. Being a monster, the mist didn't mean anything to him now, so he could see.
Wait, if his mother was actually Medusa, then did that make Chrysaor and Pegasus his brothers? TRUE brothers?
"Ahh, Sally, I see your clutch have hatched and- OH MY! Twins?!" A voice called from near the entrance to the store, "They look so adorable! What're the names?"
Sally smiled at her mother, the infamous gorgon of legend: Medusa.
"Perseus and Aemilia." The cheery woman- no, wait, gorgon -said with a smile.
"The Destroyer and his little Rival, huh? How cute! What darlings!" Medusa responded, "My grandbabies, my first grandbabies... You must be starrrving!"
Perseus giggled at that, while his sister nodded, hunger in her slit-like eyes. The hero-turned-beast could somewhat agree with that look as well, he was starving!
'In true grandmotherly fashion... I could get used to this! I guess this means Chrysaor and Pegasus are my uncles.' He thought, 'And if I remember right, her cooking is delicious!'
"I assume the rest of the clutch are still downstairs...?" Medusa questioned, receiving a nod, "Alright then! I'll get them cooking."
'...'
'Oh yeah. They talked about that, didn't they...' Percy thought to Khaos.
'Well, think of it this way: you'll have to hunt down humans sometime, this is just the warm-up.'
'I still don't think I can do it... Killing in cold blood...'
'What did you call it when you turned your step-dad into a block of stone?'
'That doesn't count: that sleazebag deserved death!'
'And he was the only one? Yeah, face it kiddo: humanity sucks. More people are like Gabe than like Sally. In fact, Sally is a monster here! And when you run into the gods of this dimension-'
'Yeah. Maybe we can discuss this later. Cross the bridge when we get to it.'
'Fine, but I'll remember.'
He hated this. It shouldn't be like this. It was wrong.
His brother tasted delicious. Positively scrumptious. Cooked to perfection, with meat that was neither too tough, or overly soft. Just the right amount of fat to lean. Perfectly seasoned. This was blasphemy...
'Told ya you'd like it!'
'Shut up.'
He took another cut of... roast gorgon ...from the center of the table, slowly nibbling away at the meat, while his 'family' consumed chunks of the stuff whole. The older two occasionally gave him odd looks as he did so, his sister simply watching him for a few seconds, and then mimicking his behavior.
"Perseus, dear, that's not how we eat." His mother said in typical motherly-scolding fashion, "Watch me."
She ripped an arm off, and then preceded to unhinge her jaw, and eat it whole.
"You're being messy! Little crumbs of meat are everywhere!"
Percy blushed. Regardless of what the reason was, he couldn't help but be embarrassed and ashamed when his mother scolded him on something.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Sally dearest, he's not grown enough for that." Medusa scolded in return, correcting her daughter, "His stomach acid is not yet strong enough to melt bone."
"Oh." She said, before shrugging, "I guess you're good then."
He continued eating again, this time a bit more aggressively.
"-and so it was, that the foolish hero was eaten whole by the brave little cyclops, and the town was free to be preyed upon once more." His mother finished, before getting up to put away the book.
The story was... odd. Not in a bad way, mind you. But it was definitely odd for Perseus. Greek Mythos from the perspective of the monsters was just something he never considered. He never considered that they even told stories, or had children, or had families. None of that registered now that he thinks about it, despite having killed so many of them. He felt bad.
'You should. You forgave Humanity for its sins based on their emotions, but not Monsters. And Humanity SUCKS. Look what they did to PAN! Look what they did to the EARTH! It's no wonder Gaea wanted to kill them all, right? Luckily, in this world without demigod heroes, humanity has been kept in check a bit better. BUT STILL! Poor nature...'
'Okay, but-'
'No buts! Admit it: humans are terrible, and deserve death!'
'No one deserves death just based on their species!' He quipped back, 'But... yeah, their pretty bad. Fine. I admit it! Still feels wrong...'
'I'll accept that. It's an improvement...'
It was at this moment that his mother returned, smiling at her two children, both of them curled up (quite literally, as they were half snake) in bed. The room was warm and comfy. Cozy, even.
"Goodnight, dearests." His mother whispered, having put away the book, "I love you both with all of my three hearts."
'Our anatomy is confusing.'
'Yeah. I'll agree with you on that one.'
Sally had already wrapped up Aemilia, rubbing her nose against her own, and wrapping their tails up together. A soft giggle came from Percy's sister, as his mother tucked her in. She then repeated the same for Perseus and- honestly -it was the best he'd felt in ages. This was wonderful. THIS was what life should feel like. Loving mother; Loving grandmother; Loving sister; Safe home: All of it felt so nice. This was what he'd missed out on the first time through. Honestly, it made him feel a little better about having to eat humans and his siblings in this world. In fact, he almost felt- dare he say it -comfortable in his new body. It felt good.
it was so wrong, and yet it felt so right. And that made his human side scared. Scared he'd become a monster inside and out. That he'd forget who he was and move on. That-
'That side of you should be scared. I flat told you that that's what's going to happen.'
'You aren't helping.'
'Or maybe... you don't want to accept that I am.'
'Please just let me stay in denial.'
'Nope.'
'Fuck.'
Afterthoughts:
This story hopefully lives up to the standard of those who somehow still were waiting on a Inverted continuation. I know this isn't the same, but this is SPIRITUALLY the successor to that story. Just without smut. If you REALLY want a smutfic, then IDK, send me a PM or something saying you do.
Either way, follow, fav, and review or something. I guess.
Bonus Story:
"Spin it, Percy."
OKAY OKAY! Geez... He spun the wheel. It twirled around and around in a kaleidoscope of colors. Spinning and spinning.
'Please be a good one!' He hoped.
"Please be a funny one." Khaos hoped.
It stopped.
""Fourteen Inch Penis?"" They both asked in unison.
"NOOOO!" Percy lamented, with Khaos just standing by, silently.
'...how about we respin it, okay? Forget this ever happened.'
'Really?'
'No.' She responded, warping him off.
Before he suddenly returned.
"I died from lack of blood flow the moment I hit puberty, and accidentally saw Annabeth stripping."
'Oh dangit. I forgot about that issue. Oh, well. You win some, and you lose some.'
"I feel as if I'm the only one that lost."
'No. I wasn't really entertained by that world at all. And being bored sucks.'
"Oh woah is you."
'It's spelled Woe, not Woah.'
"..."
'...'
"I hate you, you know that?"
'Yes. Yes I do. Since you told me.'
"..."
'...'
"I hate you even more now."
