To most of the Gryffindors' amusement, Blaise's only ambition was to be the bravest of them all. Oh, the irony!
When the Sorting Hat sorted Blaise Zabini into Slytherin, everyone expected him to be ambitious. Slytherins were infamous for their cunning, resourceful and ambitious personalities, after all, and Blaise was no different. He was cunning, resourceful and ambitious… but not like people had expected.
When his father had gotten terribly ill, six-year-old Blaise had wanted to say goodbye to him, but when it was time to go into the room, he had been terrified and hadn't been able to budge from his spot. He had failed to say goodbye, and it had gnawed at him throughout the years.
Being bull-headed was ingrained in Blaise, and he was the only one in the entire school to go through the worst dares imaginable. Nicknamed 'The Dare King', he completed all the dares people gave him — no matter how dangerous or disgusting the dare was. From smearing Niffler excrement on his face to licking a Hippogriff's penis, from mooning Snape in class to writing Dumbledore an explicit letter, Blaise had done it all.
As the years passed, the dares grew more and more elaborate, but Blaise unflinchingly completed every single one of them. People expected him to be interested in typical-Slytherin things, but Blaise didn't desire power. To most of the Gryffindors' amusement, Blaise's only ambition was to be the bravest of them all. Oh, the irony.
Theodore Nott walked out of the Transfiguration class and groaned loudly. "Draco, we need to do something about Blaise…"
"What do you mean?" Draco frowned as he looked up from his textbook.
"Blaise has no survival skills. His desperate need to win has replaced them," Theo said, easily keeping pace with Draco.
"What? That's not true… Is it?" Draco glanced back at Blaise, who was talking to Pansy.
"Oh, I'll prove it to you — watch this," Theo said, clearing his throat. "Hey, Blaise!"
"What's up, mate?" Blaise jogged over to them, a broad grin on his face.
"Race you to the bottom of the stairs!" Theo said, taking a large step towards the stairs pointedly, and Draco watched their interaction, wondering what Theo had meant.
Without hesitation, Blaise raced towards the nearest window, and before anyone could stop him, he unlatched it and jumped out, his robes flapping about his heels.
Draco's mouth fell open with horror. He ran towards the window and screamed, "Blaise!"
Theo followed him, and they saw Blaise safely on the ground, grinning up at them and waving. "I won!" he yelled at the top of his voice, and Draco let out an audible sigh of relief. Merlin, Theo's right!
Theo looked at Draco pointedly and said, "See? He's crazy! Remember how he jumped off his broom last week and broke his ribs and got a concussion? And last month, remember he ate five of those habanero peppers just because Weasley dared he couldn't? He spent the entire night throwing up because Madam Pomfrey refused to treat him!"
Draco slowly nodded and said, "Yes, I remember… I was there, wasn't I?"
"My point is that he's gone mental. He could die! We need to do something to stop him."
"He doesn't listen to anyone, Theo. If he wants to risk his neck, who are we to stop him? Besides… it's fun," Draco admitted, a small smirk on his face.
"Fun? Are you mad too?" Theo demanded, scowling darkly. He ran his fingers through his dark brown hair and said, "Draco, think about it. If he dies…"
"Alright, you're right. We should do something, but what? He won't listen to us," Draco said pointedly.
"He won't listen to us… but I have a feeling he'll listen to someone else," Theo murmured as he rubbed his jaw slowly.
Draco's eyes widened. "You mean…"
"Yes."
"Worth a try — though, don't expect her to help."
"I might have some… material on her," Theo admitted under his breath, and Draco's eyes almost popped out of his head.
"What? And you didn't tell me? I thought you trusted me!"
"I do, but I promised her I wouldn't tell anyone. Looks like it's time to use that information to save Blaise," Theo said, motioning for Draco to follow him.
Sure of his imminent success, Blaise flew higher up in the air, his hand loosely wrapped around the broom's handle. "You're so going down, Corner!" he yelled as he turned his head to look down at the two boys below him.
"Ha! There's no way he can do this," Michael Corner said, high-fiving Justin Finch-Fletchley, who stood grinning beside him. "I'm winning this bet."
"He's pretty stubborn, you know," Justin said as he watched Blaise fly higher.
"The water's freezing, mate," Michael said with a hearty laugh. "It's already snowing here — Zabini dives into that, and he's dead."
"Should he even be doing this? Aren't there any rules against things like these?" Justin wondered out loud.
"Not really. I made sure no one could incriminate us in case something goes wrong."
"Okay." Students began to gather around them to watch Blaise accomplish another dangerous and terrifying dare.
Blaise glanced over his shoulder to make sure he was exactly fifty feet above the cold and dark waters of the Black Lake. The water was completely still below him and even the Giant Squid was nowhere to be seen. "This is too easy," he said out loud, rolling his eyes. "But… a dare's a dare."
He hovered in the air and called out to the students assembled on the shore, "You ready?"
A loud chorus of yeses filled the air, and Blaise grinned proudly. He always attempted to exaggerate his actions. "I said are you ready?"
As the group of students screamed their agreement at him, Blaise readied himself to go through with the dare. He let the broom hover in the air, aware that he only had one shot, and stood on shaky feet on the broom's thin handle. He almost fell but steadied himself just in time, and the students cried out their encouragement.
Blaise didn't look at the water as he extended his arms on either side, his heart steadily thumping in his chest. He was so used to these dares that he didn't even blink an eye at how high he was.
He was ready to do a dramatic front-flip to dive into the water when a loud commotion distracted him. Curious to see what was happening, he glanced down and immediately regretted it as his heart started pounding in his chest.
Hermione Granger was shoving through the crowd to get to the front, and Theo and Draco were right behind her. Blaise scowled when he saw how close Theo was to her and snarled, "That bastard knows I fancy her — and he's still too close to her!"
When Hermione reached the edge of the water, she raised her hands up to her mouth and yelled, "Blaise! Don't do this, please! Just come down! Please!"
"Sorry, Granger, but it's a dare!" Blaise called out to her as he tried to calm his heart. It would be a terrible idea for him to jump into the freezing water if his heartbeat was too high.
"I dare you not to go through with that dare!" Hermione's panic was clearly audible, and Blaise hesitated as he pondered over his options.
He could jump into the water and impress the other students with his bravado, but Hermione would be terribly hurt he didn't listen to her. On the other hand, he could listen to her and come down safely, but the students would jeer and mock him. He was stuck in a conundrum and had no idea what to do.
He looked down at Hermione, who stood wringing her hands nervously, and he knew he couldn't go through with the dare. Not when it could hurt her… Making up his mind, he started to lower himself to straddle the broom.
A gust of wind ruined his new plan, and his foot slipped. The students screamed as Blaise hurtled towards the lake's surface, and Hermione instantly reacted. She whipped out her wand and yelled, "Arresto Momentum! Accio Blaise's robes!"
Blaise's robes flapped in the wind as he whizzed towards her, and Hermione readied herself to stop Blaise from crashing into her. "Immobulus!" she cried, pointing her wand at Blaise when he was a few feet away from her.
Theo suggested, "Drop him into the water, Granger."
"What?" Hermione's wand was still pointed at Blaise, who hovered only a few inches above the water. "Why?"
"He's an arse, that's why," Draco stated with a shrug. "Just drop him."
"No, I'm not going to drop hi—"
Theo interrupted her by pointing his wand at Blaise. "Finite Incantatem."
"Theodore Nott!" Hermione screamed as Blaise plunged into the icy depths. "Are you crazy? He could die!"
Carelessly, Theo shrugged and said, "He should know what he was getting into."
Blaise rose from the water, his teeth chattering audibly, and stammered, "Fuck! It's freezing!"
Hermione dragged him out of the water and cast a Warming Charm on him. "Are you out of your mind, Zabini? You could have died! Do you have a death wish? If you do, you can just tell me — I'll kill you myself!"
She shrugged out of her thick robes and wrapped them around Blaise, who was still shivering with the cold. Blaise gazed at her with adoration, his heart thumping painfully against his ribs. "You look beautiful when you're angry."
Hermione stopped ranting and gawked at him with disbelief. "Malfoy! Check the water for some sharp object. Zabini seems to have hit his head."
"No," Blaise stammered, his teeth still clacking loudly. "It's true… You're so beautiful."
"Alright, people, what are you all looking at? Give them their privacy!" Theo called out to the students, and they groaned as they dispersed.
"Blaise, what are you—" Hermione frowned, bewildered where he was going with his compliment.
"Go to Hogsmeade with me?" Blaise stammered, raising her robes to his face and burying his face in it. "Please?"
Hermione was dumbstruck for a moment, but then, a plan formed in her mind. "Only if you promise you won't do these terrible dares… I won't stop you from all dares, but please, you have to think before you act. You could have died today!"
"Okay, I promise," Blaise blurted out, and Theo and Draco gaped at him.
"You swear?" Hermione needed him to clarify it before she agreed to go out with him.
"I swear I won't do anything that could kill me."
"Very well then, I'll go out with you this weekend."
"And the next?" Blaise demanded hopefully, and Hermione looked at him suspiciously.
"Next?"
"Yes, next. And the next. And the next. In fact, you'll date me forever — or I'll start doing these dares again," Blaise threatened, and Hermione groaned.
"I can't believe you're doing this, but fine. I'll go out with you." She rolled her eyes and motioned towards the castle. "Let's get you to Madam Pomfrey… You'll freeze out here."
Blaise smiled as Hermione helped him up, and they began making their way back to the castle. Theo and Draco watched them for a few moments before Draco said, "Wow… I cannot believe we killed two birds with one stone."
"Got him to give up his insanity and ask Granger out in one fell swoop. Go, us!" Theo said cheekily, giving Draco a fist-bump.
While Hermione's head was turned away, Blaise wrapped his arm around her shoulders and grinned over at his best friends, who grinned and gave him a thumbs-up.
Success does not lie in results but in efforts; being the best is not as important as doing the best. And Theo and Draco had succeeded in keeping Blasie from making a terrible decision. For the time being.
