A/N: So this is just a little drabble, written as a tag to the final episode because I needed catharsis after that travesty of a finale. Our boys deserved so much better:-(

Disclaimer: I do not own SPN (although, after that finale, I wish I did!)

There'll Be Peace When You are Done

Peace. Once, Sam had thought peace was a normal apple pie life with a wife, kids and a white picket fence. He had craved normality even at the cost of being separated from his family. Hell, the last time he had been to heaven, his best memories hadn't even included them. It's funny how, when your dreams become reality, they tend to turn to ash in your mouth. Sam had had it all; decades of normal, mundane - roast chicken dinners, school functions, birthdays, work get togethers, etcetera etcetera ad nauseum.

And you know what the real kicker was? Right in the middle of all that normality, Sam found himself missing the thrum of the Impala, the intellectual stimulation of research, the blood-pounding thrill of the hunt. Hell, even the ugly-ass motel rooms. Because that, all that, was normal. This picture-perfect life he had now was the anomaly. The fly in the proverbial ointment. Because peace, real peace, was not a quiet life with no adventure or danger as he had once thought and dreamed of. Peace was a solid presence in the driver's seat next to him, shared laughter and tears, a big brother who had his back. Knowing that, no matter what, there was a constant in his life that he could always count on. And without that….well, without that Sam was lost. Off kilter. Always feeling like he was climbing stairs in the dark waiting for the trip step to catch him out.

And so it was with relief that Sam, after decades of 'peace', finally breathed his last. And opened his eyes (clear and young once more) to a bridge in rural America. And as he took in his surroundings, something clicked into place that had been out of joint for years. The ever present ache in his heart eased and relaxed, like a taut bow string that had finally been released as his big brother turned and grinned at him. 'Hey Sammy'.

'Dean'. Peace.
