*Happy Labor day everyone! Hope you all are enjoy some downtime and relaxing a bit. Part of this chapter was a bit hard to write, but it worked out. Enjoy!*
The last of the sun had begun to disappear and Woody still clung to his wife's chest. He refused to move, refused to leave her side. The others had moved back to give him his space, but they were starting to worry.
"You need to talk to him." Jessie whispered to Buzz.
"His wife just died, Jess." Buzz said.
"I know that, and I'm sad about it too, but it's going to get dark soon and cold. We need to find some sort of shelter now."
"She's right, Buzz. Owen said, holding Rosetta. "Some of us have minor injuries, but they do need to be treated. Woody, the longer his seams are open like that, the more energy he loses." Buzz looked over at him and then back at Woody. He sighed and started walking over to his friend. He went on the other side of Bo and knelt beside her, looking down at the sheriff's face.
"Woody? It's time to go, partner." The cowboy didn't move. He placed a hand on his shoulder. "Woody?"
"I can't move, Buzz. I can't leave her. Woody whispered, crying softly. Please, I want to stay with her."
"I know you do, pal. But she's moved on. She's at peace now. We should keep moving." Woody still didn't move. Then Buzz had an idea. "Hey, how about we give her a proper funeral? A beautiful sendoff? What do you say?" Woody sighed heavily and closed his eyes. He slowly raised his head.
"O, okay. She would like that." Buzz nodded, and then went back to Jessie and Rosetta to tell them the plan. Jessie agreed. The boys got straight to work, using sticks to dig a small grave for Bo. Once it was dug up, Carl got in and Jack and Buzz carefully lifted Bo down to him. Carl placed her carefully down on the soft soil. Jessie stood off to the side, her arm tight around her brother. Everyone placed a small bit of dirt into the hole until she was completely covered. Cora, Lucy, and Rosetta placed wildflowers on top of it. Rosetta went back to her father and placed a supporting arm around him to hold him up. They all lowered their heads in a moment of silence. Woody looked at the tiny grave and broke down, shutting his eyes tight. He swallowed his sobs and took a deep breath before speaking.
"They say a toy has one purpose, one reason they cease to exist. My kid was always my purpose, but my reason for living was always you, Bo. Woody said. You've had my back for years, supporting me when I've doubted my self-worth, been my light in the darkness. You were my reason to become a good leader, a good husband and an even better father. When you were gone the first time, you were the reason I made sure our family stayed together, and that our daughter was safe. You were my reason for existing in this world. You are my everything, my world, my heart. All that I am and all that I've wanted to be is because of you. Your memory will live on forever in our hearts. Rest easy, my darling. You will be forever missed and loved. We love you, Bo Peep-Pride. I love you." He lowered his head again, breathing fast.
"Wow." Buttercup, Trixie and Chuckles said together.
"That was deep." Hamm said.
"Dad, that was beautiful." Rosetta said, wiping a tear away.
"Nicely done, bro." Jessie said, nudging him. Woody's head remained down, almost as if he didn't hear her. "Woody?" He began to fall forward. "Woody!"
"Aunt Jessie, he's unconscious!" Rosetta cried. Jessie caught him and placed him on the ground.
"He used the last of his energy to give one last tribute to Bo." Owen said sadly.
"Hold on. What in the sam heck...the cloth around one of his wounds is all wet, and there is dirt in his stuffing. Buzz, come look at this." Buzz came over and saw that most of his stuffing was wet and black from the dirt. Jessie looked at him. "Was there water on the windmill blade?"
"No, it was dry when we pulled it out." Buzz said.
"But there was a small puddle of water under the debris wall. Cody said. I saw it when I went to find his leg. I didn't think anything of it. I'm sorry."
"It's okay, Cody. You didn't know." Jessie said. She checked the other wound as well. "The wound on this side is wet too. The water must have seeped into his stuffing before you pulled him out."
"Is that bad?" Trixie asked.
"Technically, no. But the water may drag him down and potentially drain his energy. So we have to get moving and find a shelter, now. Buttercup, can I put Woody on your back?"
"Yeah sure. I'll be careful with him, I promise." Buttercup said. Buzz picked Woody up and placed him carefully on the unicorns back. Once the cowboy was secure, the gang started walking again. The sun finally set and darkness covered them, but they continued on. After two hours, they finally stopped to rest in a small playground.
"This is hopeless. At this rate, we'll never find a shelter." Potato Head snapped.
"Yes we will, dear. It may be close by and we just don't know it yet." His wife said reassuringly. Suddenly, they heard the snap of a twig. Buzz, Jessie, Owen, Carl, and Jack jumped up, fists raised, ready to fight.
"Who goes there?" Carl asked.
"We come in peace." A voice said. Two toys, a boy and girl, stepped out from behind a tree and came over to them.
"More survivors! The girl said. You were caught in that horrible storm, am I correct?"
"Yes, that's right." Jessie said.
"Are you in need of repairs or shelter until you find your owners?" The boy asked.
"Yes. Do you know where one is?" Rex asked.
"We do. I'm Rey, and this is Finn." The girl said, pointing to herself and then the boy. "We can take you to a shelter not too far from here."
"We've been looking for survivors since the storm passed. Our general and commander run the shelter along with a lead surgeon. Come, follow us." Finn said. They led the way, disappearing back into the forest. They only walked a short distance before finding themselves in front of a tall building with a red cross symbol on the front.
"That's a shelter for humans!" Jack said.
"Our shelter is behind it. Come on." Rey said. They followed her across the street and behind the building. What they saw stopped them in their tracks. Under the cover of a weeping willow tree, several cots made out of sticks and small pieces of fabric were spaced out, each with a toy either sitting or laying on it, getting fixed or checked over for injuries. Tons of toys were running around, helping out where they could. Rosetta let out a sigh of relief. Finally. She thought. We're safe.
*I'm almost done with chapter 14, so I will have that up either tomorrow or later tonight. My inspirationfor Woody's tribute to Bo was the song "you are the reason' by Calum Scott. Sad song, but it worked!*
