Teddy peered out from his hiding place underneath the table. Just past the tablecloth, he could make out Uncle Harry's shoes as he got himself some of the snacks Aunt Fleur brought over for the party. Teddy stayed very, very quiet. If Uncle Harry heard him or saw him, he'd make Teddy go to bed.
Teddy was way too excited to go to sleep. Uncle Ron promised him the last time he visited that he'd take Teddy on a fly on his broomstick, and there was no way Teddy would be able to wait until morning for that. He'd already waited ages for Uncle Ron to come visit him again!
Uncle Harry's shoes moved away from the table, and Teddy cautiously poked his head out from under the tablecloth. Uncle Harry was talking to Uncle Bill and Aunt Hermione, and none of them were looking in his direction. Perfect. Silently, Teddy slid out from under the table and into the hall as quickly as he could without giving away his position to any of the adults. Thankfully, the three he needed to watch out for the most were all talking together in the kitchen. He supposed Aunt Fleur might make him go to bed, but Uncle George and Uncle Charlie definitely wouldn't. He wasn't sure about Aunt Ginny; he'd just have to avoid her to be on the safe side.
Movement caught his eye, and Teddy scrambled behind the coat rack in the hall, hoping against hope that whoever it was hadn't seen him. His heart started beating wildly when a tall figure came into view, curiously walking toward his hiding spot.
Merlin. He hadn't been quick enough.
"Hey, Teddy," Uncle George whispered, tilting his head at him and kneeling on the ground to meet his eyes. At least his uncle understood the need to keep this quiet. "What are you doing up?"
Teddy glanced around quickly before leaning forward to whisper into his uncle's ear. "Uncle Ron said he'd take me on a broom ride, and I can't wait until morning, but Uncle Harry said I had to."
Uncle George grinned, eyes gleaming in understanding. "Ah, I see. Well, then, we better keep this moment between us, huh?"
Relief flooded Teddy. He knew Uncle George wouldn't let him down, but it was still nice to know he was on Teddy's side and not Uncle Harry's. "Don't tell anyone you saw me, Uncle George. It'll blow my cover."
Uncle George nodded his consent and mimed zipping his lips. Before he stood up, Uncle George murmured conspiratorially, "Uncle George is in the living room with Uncle Charlie. I'll go lure Charlie out, and then you can sneak in and corner Ron. Sound good?"
Teddy beamed and nodded quickly. "Yes!"
His uncle stood up. "I'll be right back. Wait for my signal."
As Uncle George went to get Uncle Charlie, Teddy repositioned himself behind the coat rack so he would be better hidden. The last thing he needed was another relative walking in and finding him before he could find Uncle Ron.
After what felt like ages, Teddy heard footsteps coming from the direction of the living room. Uncle Charlie came around the corner first, closely followed by Uncle George. They were talking and laughing, but Uncle Charlie wasn't looking in Teddy's direction. Brilliant.
Just like he said he would, Teddy waited until Uncle George signaled for him to move. Just before he followed Uncle Charlie into the kitchen, Uncle George glanced back at Teddy and put one finger to his lips, making a shooing gesture with the other hand. Without a moment's hesitation, Teddy bolted out from his hiding spot and into the living room, fully trusting Uncle George's word that no one else was in there.
His trust in his uncle paid off when he nearly barrelled into Uncle Ron, who was just standing up from the armchair he was sitting in.
"Teddy?" he asked in surprise, running a hand through his red hair. "What are you doing here? Harry put you to bed nearly an hour ago!"
"Shh!" Uncle Ron was going to alert the whole family that Teddy was up if he wasn't careful! Whispering, he continued, "You said you would take me flying, Uncle Ron!"
Uncle Ron crouched down, grumbling as he did so. "Mate, I'll take you flying in the morning. It's past your bedtime right now, and Harry will kill me if he finds out I took you flying in the dark."
"But you can use your magic to make a light!" Teddy insisted. "Uncle Harry won't kill you, anyway. You're his best mate, and he said best mates stick together."
Uncle Ron smiled softly. "True."
"Please, Uncle Ron? I promise I'll be good and hold on extra tight." As he spoke, Teddy let his hair turn red to match his uncle's. Uncle Ron always smiled when he did that, so maybe it would convince him to take Teddy flying. "I can't wait until morning!"
Sure enough, the smile on Uncle Ron's face grew when he saw Teddy's hair turn from its usual turquoise to red. "Sorry, mate, but—"
"Please?"
"Teddy, I—"
"Uncle George would do it."
Uncle Ron froze, smile quickly vanishing. "What?"
"Uncle George would do it," Teddy repeated, pouting sullenly and crossing his arms. This was so not cool of Uncle Ron. He's the one who was always saying he was the fun uncle!
Uncle Ron scoffed. "George wouldn't take you either, Teddy."
"He would take me. He helped me sneak over to you without anyone seeing."
Realization dawned in Uncle Ron's blue eyes. "Why that sneaky—" he glanced at Teddy, faltering slightly—"brother of mine! I can't believe he did that."
Teddy was annoyed. Uncle Ron was the one who promised he would take Teddy flying as soon as he visited again, and now he was refusing and saying Uncle George wouldn't take him either to make himself look like less of a liar! Aunt Hermione would say he had nerve.
"You have nerve, Uncle Ron," Teddy said seriously. "You're not my favorite uncle anymore because you broke your promise."
Uncle Ron's eyes widened. "You don't mean that, Teddy. You told me the last time I visited your family that I was your favorite uncle."
"That was before you broke your promise," Teddy informed him again. "Now Uncle George is my favorite because he helped me out."
Eye twitching, Uncle Ron stood up abruptly, scooping Teddy into his arms as he did so. Teddy let out a surprised giggle at the action and quickly looped his arms around Uncle Ron's neck. "Well, we can't let Uncle George replace me as your favorite uncle, now, can we?" He tickled Teddy as he spoke, and Teddy shook his head as he giggled. "C'mon, mate. We'll sneak out the back door and fly for five minutes, okay? Just a quick joyride tonight, and in the morning we'll go out again, but only if you promise to make me your favorite uncle again. Do we have a deal?"
"Deal!" Teddy whisper-shouted happily.
Uncle Ron snuck through the house to the back door, doing a much better job of keeping away from everyone else in the family than Teddy did. Together, they stepped out into the crisp night air and headed toward the shed where all the broomsticks were. Uncle Ron gently placed Teddy down so he could grab his broomstick. Once they were in the middle of the open field behind the Burrow, Uncle Ron mounted the broomstick and lifted Teddy up in front of him; Teddy held on tight to the stick just like he promised he would. Uncle Ron cast a spell that illuminated the path in front of them, and then he kicked off into the air. Teddy squealed as they climbed higher and higher into the sky, excitement coursing through his body.
For five glorious minutes, they flew around the field behind the Burrow, laughing together and streaming through the night sky. At last, they landed and dismounted. After putting the broomstick back in the shed, Uncle Ron hoisted Teddy up into his arms again. The buzz from their flight was starting to wear off, and Teddy could feel his eyelids drooping. "That was fun," he murmured into Uncle Ron's shoulder. "Thank you for taking me, Uncle Ron."
Since his head was resting on his uncle's shoulder, Teddy could feel as well as hear Uncle Ron's answering laugh. "No problem, Teddy. Am I your favorite uncle again?"
Yawning, Teddy replied, "Yes."
"Good. Now let's get you to bed, all right, mate?"
"Okay."
The last thing Teddy was aware of before his eyes slipped closed was a soft kiss being planted against his hairline. He smiled sleepily. Uncle Ron was the best.
