ACT 1 - SCENE SET 2

EXT. THE EARLE'S TOWNHOME IN GEORGETOWN - DAY (SCENE 2.1)

START SCENE

Prentiss and Morgan approach the home. The Earle's luxury townhouse is a stunning red brick, colonial style with creme white trim and crownings.

Morgan: So you know her?

Prentiss: My mother does.

She looks over at Morgan

Prentiss: Yay, politics (said sarcastically)

Morgan smirks at this and knocks on the door. After a few moments, Patricke Earle's wife Katharine Adler Earle opens the door. She is wearing expensive clothes and is adorned with jewelry probably worth more than their SUV.

Morgan: Hi Ma'am, we're with the FBI. I'm Agent Morgan and this is -

Katharine interrupts Morgan, looking directly at Prentiss

Katharine: You're Elizabeth's daughter, Emily is it?

Prentiss smiles and nods

Prentiss: Mrs. Earle, is it possible we could ask you a few questions about your husband?

Katharine: Of course. Please come in.

The two agents headed inside

INT. THE EARLE'S TOWNHOME - DAY (SCENE 2.2)

START SCENE

Katharine: Shoes off, please.

Prentiss nods and slips off her boots, Morgan doing the same with his. Katharine leads them to an ornate sitting room and gestures for them to sit.

Katharine: What do you want to know?

Morgan: We'd like to take a look at the crime scene, Ma'am.

Katharine: The crime scene unit and coroner have already been here, I'm afraid there's nothing left to see.

Prentiss: Still, we'd appreciate getting to take a peek.

Katharine shrugged her shoulders and gestured to the upstairs where she'd found her husband's dead body when she came home from her spin class. She didn't follow them upstairs

Morgan: Whew was it chilly in there or-

Prentiss: Just her?

Morgan chuckled and paced around the bedroom.

Morgan: Well, CSU did a quick job of this one. We'll probably get more information from the pictures

Prentiss agreed, so they leave the bedroom and thank Mrs. Earle for her time. She sees them out. They exit the home and visibly relax, glad to be out of the stuffy, yet beautiful home.

Morgan: You know, that house is just that-a house. It's not a home. Everything looks so untouchable, so un-lived in.

Morgan: My guess- Earle didn't spend much time at home. There was no indication that a man had any say in that house

Prentiss: They're a political family, they probably only spend part of the year in DC

Morgan: Yeah, but Earle's been a senator for what? Nearly 20 years? You'd think the home, especially the bedroom, would be more lived in.

Morgan: You catch my drift?

Prentiss: Please, enlighten me

Morgan: He was definitely getting something on the side

Prentiss looked confused

Morgan: An affair, Prentiss.

Prentiss: Oh. Wait- that could mean

Morgan nodded. He pulled out his phone and dialed Garcia

Morgan: Princess, Prentiss and I got a hunch on how Brenton and Earle could be connected.

Garcia: How so?

Prentiss: They might have been having an affair, can you look in to it?

Garcia: Scandalous! I will find out if our happily married senator was not so happily married. Bye bye my crime fighters!

Prentiss shook her head at Garcia's antics and She and Morgan headed back into the car. The scene ends as they walk to the car.

INT. CANMORE'S OFFICE - DAY (SCENE 2.3)

START SCENE

Hotch and Rossi were sitting in two chairs across from Canmore, his desk in between them. Canmore remained cool and calm. He had a plan.

Canmore: I suppose this is about Mara

Hotch: Yes, it is. She was your aide?

Canmore: Yes, for around - oh I don't know- 6 months. Sweet girl, it's a shame. I hope you find whoever did this.

Hotch: Well, we have some questions for you.

Canmore: Oh of course, anything to help. What can I tell you?

Rossi: Records say the night before she died, she left work around 7:00?

Canmore: Ahh-yes. That sounds right.

Rossi: Do you know where she would have gone after?

Canmore: Um, no. Home I suppose?

Hotch: Is there anything else you think would be important? Did you know about any friends, boyfriends, enemies maybe?

Canmore: Oh no. I don't ask my aides about their private life-it wouldn't be appropriate, don't you think? However, I think she might have been seeing someone. Again, I didn't ask much and she was very private.

Rossi: Of course. Now, Congressman, can you tell me anything about Senator Earle?

Canmore: Oh such a shame as well. You think those two murders are related?

Hotch: We're exploring the possibility

Canmore: I see. Well, I didn't know him well - met him a few times professionally. But

He paused

Rossi: What?

Canmore: Oh no- I try to not deal in rumors

Hotch: Congressman, I appreciate that, but anything you know could be important

Canmore sighed

Canmore: I had heard that the Senator wasn't exactly faithful. Interesting for a guy who ran on such a Christian platform, no?

The two FBI agents shared a look

Hotch: Mr. Canmore, Are you insinuating the senator was having an affair?

Canmore: Like I said, just a rumor.

Hotch looked at Rossi and then back at Canmore. They stood up, shook his hand and left. Canmore smiled friendly, but as the camera lingered on his face, it became increasingly sinister.

INT. THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE OF CANMORE'S OFFICE- DAY (SCENE 2.4)

START SCENE

Hotch and Rossi lingered in the hallway to confer.

Rossi: Interesting that he knew nothing about either of their lives, except their sex lives

Hotch furrowed his brow

Hotch: It is weird.

Rossi: Maybe Morgan and Prentiss can tell us if they think the Senator was having an affair.

Hotch: It's possible they found something at the house. Let's head back.

END SCENE

INT. BAU CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY (SCENE 2.5)

START SCENE

The team sits around the conference room table, waiting for Rossi and Hotch to join them. When they do arrive, the team straightens their posture just a bit more. Hotch pretends not to notice this, but it makes him chuckle every time.

Yes, he was their boss, but he was still a part of the team. They were a family.

Hotch: Canmore thought Mara might have had a boyfriend and that the Senator was cheating on his wife.

Morgan: Prentiss and I definitely got cheater vibes from the house. Garcia, did you find anything between Brenton and Earle?

Hotch: You think the affair was with Brenton?

Morgan: It would make sense, wouldn't it?

Hotch nodded.

Garcia: Ok so, I didn't find anything directly nailing Mara to the metaphoric affair wall, but I definitely found something on Earle.

Morgan: Care to tell us?

Garcia: Let me have my dramatic moment. Ok so I looked into Earle's finances and didn't find anything out of the ordinary except weekly charges on his credit card for a hotel in Potomac. If that doesn't scream affair- I don't know what does

Hotch: Thanks Garcia- keep looking into it-see if you can find something proving the girlfriend was Mara

JJ: If it was Mara- I think that tells us who killed them

Reid: The wife.

JJ nods

Morgan: Ok, wife definitely didn't seem too heartbroken over her husband's death , but she has an alibi- she was at spin class probably 30 people saw her

Rossi: Doesn't mean she isn't involved

Prentiss: She has money. She could have hired someone.

Reid: It makes sense- look at the gunshot wounds on Mara and Earle- one single shot to the head. That could definitely be a professional hitman

The team looked around.

Hotch: Looks like we need to bring Katharine Earle in

Prentiss: She's gonna lawyer up fast, we should probably have evidence to prove that Brenton and Earle were having an affair AND that she knew about it before we try to charge.

Hotch nodded in agreement.

Hotch: Garcia, can you look at Mara's online activity-see if you can point us towards any of her friends that might be able to confirm the affair

Garcia: On it.

Garcia pauses for a moment

Garcia: Found one - Beth Summers, she's a year younger than Mara - student at GW where Brenton graduated from last year. Sorority sisters.

Hotch: Garcia, thanks.
