Chapter 6
It was now late spring. Matt and Kitty had been enjoying wedded bliss for a bit over six months. The still fairly new bride was getting ready for a barn dance. For some reason she was having problems with her dress. "Matt," she called to her husband.
"Yeah," he responded.
"Can you help me with my dress?"
"Sure," he chuckled as he walked over to her. He did as requested, tugging as gently as he could. Yet, nothing was coming together as expected.
"What's the matter?"
Matt scratched the back of his neck. "Well, it – it seems to be…" he began not knowing quite what to say so he bit his lip instead.
"It seems to be what, Cowboy?" she queried, raising her eyebrows.
"Well, stuck."
"What do you mean stuck?"
Matt's mouth went dry. He was entering very deep water, possibly the deepest yet since he first laid eyes on her. "I – I don't know what to say, Kit," he admitted, causing his wife to laugh.
"I have something to tell you," she said after tossing her head and laughing, causing her husband to stop breathing. "I went to see Doc today," she continued to which Matt could do nothing more than nod. "In about six months there will be another Dillon in the family." The statement made the big man blink for several minutes as he tried to absorb what Kitty had said. "Matthew Dillon," she uttered to see if he'd heard.
"Huh?" he replied, shaking himself as Kitty put her hands on her hips.
"Did you hear what I just said?"
"Yeah. You saw Doc and there will be a new Dillon." Saying it out loud brought a realization. "You mean you're going to, we're going to…"
"Yes, Matt," Kitty replied, laughing.
If Matt Dillon wasn't already happy, he sure was now..
~Six Months Later.~
It was a cold, wintry day when Matt rode to town for Doc. The snow was falling at noon when the new Dillon entered the world. Matt had remained with Kitty until Doc kicked him out. Now he was back beside her.
"You did it Kit. We have a son!".
The new mother smiled as she sank back into the pillows and accepted the crying baby the doctor placed in her arms. Matt glared at the physician as if to imply the older man had somehow hurt the infant.
"You two have a healthy boy and, by golly, one of the best looking babies I've ever seen."
"I realize that Doc, but why did you have to make him cry?"
Kitty was content to sit and nurse her child and merely shake her head while Doc Adams escorted her husband into the kitchen.
"Now Matt, I would expect that from Chester, but you! I – I've got to sit down."
Kitty grinned with love as she listened to Doc telling her gentle giant why he made their son cry. Once Doc left her man was ready to rejoin his wife and son.
"What should we name him?" he asked as he leaned in to kiss her and smile at his newborn son.
"How about Nathan James Dillon?" she replied as she rested her head on Matt's shoulder and fell asleep.
