Matt exited the kitchen with a large refilled bowl of popcorn and put it on the coffee table between them as he sat down by Sylvie again. That and a few beers were the only thing they'd eaten so far that day. "What'd I miss?"
"Not much," Sylvie shook her head, "I'm sorry that I didn't go with Otis to see this in the theater, it's really very interesting."
"Wait'll you see the sequel," Casey said half jokingly.
"They made a sequel?" she asked.
"Three as I recall," Matt answered.
The front door opened and Stella walked in carrying a couple shopping bags, "Hey, what's up?"
"Nothing," Sylvie said, "where's Severide?"
"Eh, he had a couple errands to run," Stella answered as she took the bags to the kitchen and put the food away. After she did, she just looked at the fridge as if she wasn't even sure why she'd done it. Then she stepped back into the living room and asked, "Hey, how's pizza sound for dinner?"
Casey shrugged, "It's alright with me."
"Me too," Sylvie said.
"Great, now we just need Kelly to get home, see what he wants," she said.
A few minutes later Severide returned to the apartment, and he looked slightly distracted as he walked in.
"Hey, we're getting pizza, what do you want on yours?" Stella asked as she picked up her phone.
"Uh, later," Kelly said. "I need to tell you something."
Casey had an idea whatever it was was a private affair, he muted the TV and announced, "We can come back later."
"No," Kelly said as he and Sylvie moved to get up, "you might as well hear this too."
The two blondes sat back down and looked at each other, neither of them having any clue what was going on, and just hoping it wasn't something bad.
"What's up?" Stella asked.
"Uh...I...I..." Kelly tried to answer, but he wasn't getting anywhere fast. Instead he reached in his pocket and before Stella could even see what he was doing, she was looking down at a white gold band with a yellow diamond in the center slipped on her ring finger.
"I know for the longest time we acted like this wasn't any big thing, nothing too serious, but...I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I don't just want to live together...I want to make it official...marry me, please."
Casey's eyes couldn't get any wider without popping out of his skull. He hadn't seen this one coming.
"Oh my gosh," Sylvie's voice was breaking as she looked at this unfolding and said, "I'm gonna start crying again."
Stella looked at the ring on her hand and her eyes widened and blinked a few times and her mouth slowly dropped open, but she didn't say anything. After a few seconds, Kelly started to worry what it meant.
"Stella?"
Stella's eyes rolled back in her head and she collapsed on the floor in a dead faint. Casey and Sylvie jumped up from the couch to help.
"Stella?"
"Kidd!"
Stella felt her head swimming, it also felt like her eyes were racing from side to side in her head. She opened her eyes and saw three people hovering over her.
"Hey, how'd you guys get up there?" she asked, confused.
The three heads over her looked at one another and then back at her. It was then that Stella started to realize she was on the floor. "What happened?"
"You fainted," Sylvie answered, "are you okay?"
"Oh, yeah, yeah, fine," she tried to insist, oblivious to the fact the only reason she was getting up was because Kelly grabbed her arm and pulled her to her feet. "I..." her head bobbed and she blinked a few times as she tried to firmly plant her feet to hold her balance, "Don't know what came over me, what happened?"
"Kelly proposed," Sylvie told her.
Stella looked at her with big, confused eyes, "To who?"
"To you!"
"Me?" she asked. "Are you sure?"
Casey answered by grabbed her hand and lifting it to her face so she could see the ring. Stella cocked her head to the side and pored over it for a minute, before looking at Kelly and asking him, "Is this real?"
"Of course it's real," Kelly replied. "Not exactly a pull-out couch like we were discussing but I thought you'd get a bigger kick out of this."
"Uh...okay," Stella looked at it again, and asked him, "Why?"
Kelly glanced over at Casey, and said, knowing that Casey would remember this discussion they'd had several years ago on the apparatus floor, "Because life's too short."
Casey felt the corners of his mouth beaming, it stood to reason the rest of him was too but that was the only thing he actually felt.
Stella seemed to be the only one who hadn't realized that she hadn't said 'yes' yet, Kelly took her hand in his and looked her in the eyes and asked her, "Will you marry me?"
She stared at him for a minute, then pointed with her other hand and said, "It's gonna look real bad if I say no in front of these guys."
That got a laugh out of everybody in the room.
"Yes!" she nodded, "I...I will."
The room erupted in a series of whoops and cheers and congratulations. Stella seemed fairly unfazed by this as she said, "Now that that's settled, let's get dinner."
Casey yawned as he padded into the kitchen late that night, finding himself in the dark he felt along the wall for the light switch and flipped it up.
"Hey!"
He about jumped, instead he shut the light off again and whispered, "Sorry!" He stepped a few more feet into the room and saw Sylvie standing by the counter, "What're you doing up?"
She shook her head, "I'm honestly not sure...either I'm too excited about Kidd and Severide getting engaged...or, it has something to do with seeing the tall man every time I close my eyes."
Casey chuckled.
"You know," Sylvie opened the fridge door and took some food out, "after everything I've seen on this job as a paramedic, I thought for sure there's no way in hell a movie could scare me...and I don't know that it did...but there's just something...creepy, about it. You know?"
"I think that was the point," Casey replied.
Sylvie shook her head, "Man, Stella and Severide...I mean it's not that big of a surprise, they've been together for what, five years now?"
"Something like that."
"But...I never thought they'd actually marry...I just thought they'd live together forever," Sylvie said. She looked at Matt and asked him solemnly, "Do you think he would've asked her if...everything was still normal and Otis was still here and...and..."
Casey shook his head, "I don't know, honestly, I wondered the same thing."
"Did you know he was going to ask her?" Sylvie asked.
"I had no idea."
"Did you know he'd gotten a ring?"
"Nope."
"You two are supposed to be best friends, isn't that something he would've told you about?" Sylvie asked.
"If he'd actually planned it in advance, I'd think so," Casey answered. "Must've been a spur of the moment thing."
Sylvie groaned, "You don't think he'll take it back, do you?"
"Not a chance in hell," Matt answered as he sat down at the table, "He might've gotten one marriage annulled, but there's no way he'll back out of this one."
"This is so unreal," Sylvie said as she sat down in the chair next to his, "first Joe and Chloe are getting married...now Stella and Kelly...who would've seen this coming?"
Casey snorted, "Not me."
Sylvie tapped the tip of her finger against the tabletop and thought. "When do you think they'll get married?"
Casey shrugged, "I don't know, Severide eloped in Vegas the last time...he might do it again."
"You think Stella wants to elope?" Sylvie asked.
"You'd know that better than I would," Matt pointed out, "she ever tell you anything?"
Brett shook her head, "I never heard her talk about getting married."
Casey's eyes widened slightly at this news and commented, "Well this should be interesting."
Another thought occurred to Brett and she told him, "Just wait till everybody else at 51 finds out about this."
Casey laughed, "That will be very interesting."
