Crutchie was up early. He just couldn't sleep. The night before was Christmas Eve, which only meant one thing. Today was Christmas - his favorite time of the year! The newsies of Lower Manhattan had a tradition of exchanging small gifts through Secret Santa and running around in the snow. Race would say he would give up smoking for the day, but ended up with his cigar about 30 minutes into the day. Jack would sketch the snow and the newsies' happy faces. Skittery would be a little happy for once.
Crutchie was shaken from his thoughts when he heard Jack starting to wake up. They sat on the fire escape for a little while in silence, enjoying the view. The peace was interrupted suddently.
"Merry Christmas ya bums!"
"SHUDDUP RACE WE'SE TRYNA SLEEP!"
"Didja get me a good present?"
"Jack Merry Christmas!", Crutchie said, smiling brightly as usual.
"Same to you'se Crutch!"
Before the pair knew what was going on, they were dragged back inside the lodging house by Race and Blink, where the gift exchange was about to take place. It always occurred in the morning since the group wasn't the most patient.
"SETTLE DOWN! Alright. Let's start. Find the gift witch ya name on it and tryta guess who'se it came from!" Jack yelled over the excited and rambling newsboys.
All the boys rushed to the table where some gifts lay. They all began to shout out guesses.
Romeo was first. "A book? Oh it must be Specs!"
Specs nodded and said, "I gots a sappy letter and I'se guessing Mushy wrote it!"
Mushy blushed then yelled out his guess. "Finch you'se got me a new hat roight?"
Finch shrugged. "HEY ALBERT! WHY THE HECK DID YOU'SE GET ME THIS?" He held up half a sock and half a shirt.
Albert laughed and thanked Race for the pack of cigarrettes.
Race shoved Romeo playfully when he found a pack of Coronas and a pair of new socks.
While the other newsies continued to make guesses and joked around, Jack handed Crutchie his gift. Crutchie handed him his gift in return. Neither was surprised - they always picked each other! Jack undid the neatly wrapped newspapers and found a sketchbook with a cowboy hat. He hugged Crutchie and then eagerly told him to open his gift. Crutchie gasped as he looked at the masterpiece in his hands. The drawing was of him and Jack. Every detail was included and Crutchie knew Jack drew it himself. They hugged then joined the newsies outside.
For the rest of the day, everyone made snow angels, had snowball fights, and tried to stay warm. It was a perfect day in Crutchie's mind.
'Now, how long would it be until the next Christmas"' he thought.
