Chapter One-A Letter from the Air
A small bundle of red hair and dark clothes ran out of a room, came tumbling down the stairs and fled out the back door to the ever growing screams of a man who looked remarkably like a walrus. Small whimpers of pain and fear could be heard from her as she curled up on the "bed" made out of grass clippings in a small burlap bag she had sewn herself during a few moments of stolen time between her and Mu- No.. Mrs. Dursley. She needed to know better after today's correction.
She felt her body start to heal most of the cuts and scrapes all over her body. However her ankle and wrist were surely broken and she knew her body wouldn't be able to heal that damage. She didn't understand why calling Mrs. Dursley mum would be so bad, she was the only mum she had known. She whimpered softly listening to the bolt being thrown on the garden shed locking her into her "room" if it could be called that as it was little more than her made up mattress and a small sack of hand me down clothes from her cousin. The only time she had a room indoors was during the late fall, winter, and early spring while it was too cold or damp to stay outside in the shed, and even then it was a small cupboard under the stairs. It was better than the garden shed admittedly as she had an actual mattress left over from her baby crib, but that room was also worse in its own ways due to proximity to Him.
She looked up her soft and long red hair shifting back to a pure black and shorter style before her eyes shifted to a soft violet listening for a while to the sound of the three Dursleys piling into the family car and driving off. All she had asked was to go to the zoo with them. She wanted to see the outside world and get a reprieve from everything. Mrs.Dursley had the shopping, Duddly had School but she had nothing, Not since she had accidentally turned the teachers hair blue then mimicked it in kindergarten. She shivered softly. Ten fell years with the Dursleys. She sniffled a little, feeling a little overwhelmed, a few small tears dripping down her face. Before she startled shuffling back a bit hearing the cry of a black owl that had suddenly appeared next to her. It was watching almost expectantly and held out a leg showing a letter addressed to her. Hesitantly the girl took the letter and opened it.
Dear Miss. Helena Layla Potter,
It is to our great horror that we found recently that someone was tampering with your vaults. A large sum of gold and several Ancient Artifacts and Heirlooms of the Very Ancient and Very Noble House of Potter were reported missing in the last week, as it would seem that someone had removed things without the appropriate Guardianship measures taking place. If you would please send a reply to this letter to arrange a time to meet with you and your current Guardian, we would be much obliged.
Many Apologies,
Goblin Master, Roganok
Helen was very startled. Vaults? Goblins? Artifacts? Heirlooms? What did this all mean, as far as she knew she was penniless. She looked up at the owl who looked at her almost as though it was bemused by her confusion. Quickly she grabbed a pen from under her mattress and a grass stained piece of paper humming softly and nervous on what to write. She wanted to make sure everything was written well to talk to someone so important, especially since she only just finally understood reading and writing.
Dear Master Goblin,I am afraid I am very ignorant on what you are speaking of and of your customs. If you could please send someone to come, get me I would gladly come and speak with you but otherwise I don't even have a way to find you. One of my Guardians is safe but please, only her and my cousin. Though they are gone from the house right now and won't be back until tonight due to Uncle.
Thank you,
Helena Layla Potter
PS. My name is Helena? This is the first time I have known it.
She quickly handed the letter to the owl after gently rubbing The owls head already starting to feel attached to the beautiful bird. She watched as the sweet owl flew through the hole in the roof and curled up tightly on her bed trembling softly in exhaustion and pain as she watched to see if someone would come. Perhaps this would be a way for her, mum and brother to never return to this place again. Perhaps a way to never have to deal with Him again. She whimpered softly as an old pain spiked in her back through the many scars there that had formed before her magic was strong enough to heal her. Yes. This had to be the way out for them.
Helena's POV
A few hours had passed before I startled awake to the sound of a small pop. I looked up curling tightly into the corner of my mattress registering the time by the color of the sky and angle of light on the floor. I blinked in surprise seeing a strange looking little man standing there. It kind of scared me. Who was this man? What was he? How did he get in here as the door is still locked. His teeth and ears were pointed and he was so short. I could feel myself shift a little bit in my fear, eyes going a little darker to a green and hair a little lighter to red in response to my emotions. I had been trying to not shift but it gets harder when in pain. This man seemed friendly enough though and he looked… sad even. Like he was sad that I was hurt. Not that, that made much sense to me as no one besides mu-Mrs.Dursley and cousin cared about me. My bruises, cuts, ankle and wrist throbbed at the movement and thinking about it.
"Hello Lady Potter, I was sent to bring you to Master Roganok. From the looks of what condition you are in, you left a great many many things out of your letter. My name is Griphook. I am one of the many goblins at Gringotts Bank. You look absolutely exhausted my dear. May I carry you there, child so you need not tire or injure yourself further? I would really rather not cause you any more pain." The stra-… No Griphook the Goblin asked, speaking softly. Already I felt safer with this man. Safer than I had in years.
"If it truly is no trouble. I'm even more tired than normal after being corrected sir. But I also don't want to inconvenience you or get you in trouble or cause you to be hurt by others. Do you think I will have to come back here? Do you think someone can get my Aunt and cousin? I don't know how Uncle will react when I'm found gone but he isn't likely to look for me tonight." I asked, speaking softly, looking down and carefully sliding from my spot on the mattress as it was propped up on a few bags of dirt and stumbling to my feet only to start to fall again due to the pain in my ankle, quickly being caught by Griphook and lifted into his arms.
"It is no trouble my lady, you poor thing. Even the goblin younglings that end up without families are better off than you. Let me get you quickly to our master. Everything is worse than we thought and no you will never return here child as far as I am concerned little one. I'm also sure someone can get you aunt and cousin for you if you truly wish someone to." Griphook spoke softly with a sadness in his voice as he turned on his heel vanishing with a pop and carried me with him. It was so cold and I felt like I was being squeezed in on all sides. The last thing I remembered when we reappeared back out of the squeezing, cold place into a brightly lit building was the warmth of Griphook's arms, the stinging cold and his voice murmuring softly for me to stay with him before darkness overtook my senses and I knew no more, slipping into unconsciousness. Perhaps now I was safe in this weird place with weird sights and smells.
