The crowded airport had many different kinds of people, business men, actors, tourists, and other types of people passed through every hour, but rarely were a certain pair of racers seen. Coming out of the luggage area were Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee, both talking quite loudly to hear each other over the rest of the crowd,
"I can't believe he beat us again!" Ruby shouted, exasperated
"Ruby, calm down, it was just one race," Weiss consoled, "and besides, Kurt has years of experience more than us, coming in second is an achievement in and of itself. Just go home and get some rest, okay?"
"Ugh, fine, I'll see you later Weiss," Ruby walked off to where her car was in the parkade. After getting in and starting up the engine, she muttered to herself, "I hope Yang's actually home this time."
Upon arriving home, Ruby noticed two things. One: Yang's bike wasn't there, and two: there was a strange car in their driveway. She pulled up to the curb in front of the house and checked the car, the cab was open-top, and there seemed to be a built-in GPS system. While she was checking the car the screen changed to show a man's face,
"Greetings, because of your extraordinary abilities, you have been chosen to take part in the World Race. Drivers with unique skills have been recruited from all over the world, some with experience at the highest levels of professional racing, and others whose full talents have not yet been discovered. I'm looking for the greatest driver in the world! If that's yo, then follow the map on the GPS screen," the screen changed back to the GPS, now with a marked location. Ruby jumped in, "this better be good."
After driving for hours on end, she finally reached the location on the GPS, a massive cube in the middle of the desert with a giant door. After entering with the vehicle, she got out and waited, leaning on some railing near a massive television screen. After a few minutes and the arrival of a blue van-esque vehicle, the screen flipped on and the same man from the GPS screen appeared, "Welcome to the handler proving ground,"
The driver from the blue van got out, revealing himself to be a young boy, no older than sixteen, wearing a blue jumpsuit.
"I see that you've all found your driving suits," Ruby looked down at the red jumpsuit she had, it was quite similar to the one she wore in grand prix racing, but slightly different, emblazoned with the word 'Roadrunners', the man on the large screen continued on, "my name is Peter Tezla, I'm the founder and president of the Scrim corporation, I've invented the most advanced racing technology the world's ever seen. In the world race, you will take this technology to its limits, and beyond,"
The boy who most recently arrived looked amazed, but only said one thing, "cool,"
Everyone looked over, either disappointed in his display, mildly amused, or slightly interested.
"The driver who wins will be declared the fastest racer in the world, and receive five million dollars,"
The boy spoke again, "way cool," he looked over to the driver in black, "what would you do if you have that kind of money?"
The driver in black raised an eyebrow, "I do, and I've done it."
All the drivers were testing out their cars on the flat ground of the desert, racing each other and pushing buttons, Ruby was one of those drivers. Noticing a red button standing out on the console, she pushed it, and her car started glowing blue before speeding up immensely, tilting up in a wheelie whilst leaving a trail of fire behind. The front end soon dropped down as Ruby drifted back towards the cube, deciding she'd seen enough desert for one lifetime. Upon returning she noticed another woman standing by a car. Pulling up beside her Ruby shut off the engine and called out, "hey, you got a roadrunner car too?"
The woman looked over, "yes, you must be Ruby Rose?"
"Yeah, who're you?"
"Pyrrha Nikos, it's nice to meet you,"
"Nice seeing you too," Ruby slightly smiled, at least she wasn't a jerk, better than racing against Kurt, speaking of which,
"Hey Red," he pulled up beside her in his car, Slingshot, "I thought they invited the best drivers, not runner-ups,"
Ruby scowled, "you beat me by a few millimeters Kurt, wanna find out if it was just a fluke?"
"You're on Rose," Kurt put his car into gear, ready to take off when another man approached, an older man with small glasses and a cane walked up to the three drivers, "you can settle your differences on the track, drivers. Now please go to the line up, I'm must explain a few things about your cars,"
The man walked away, leaving the three, Kurt frowned a bit before telling Ruby, "we'll be settling this on the track then Red. See you then,"
As Kurt drove away, Ruby started her engine back up and Pyrrha got in her car. The two Roadrunners drove off to meet the others.
Upon entering the line up, the older man moved to stand in front of the drivers. He tapped his cane down on the ground before speaking, "drivers, I am David Ozpin, Dr. Tezla's partner and co director of Scrim. The cars you will be driving in the race have special abilities to drive in special environments. Many of these are shared across all vehicles, such as a nitrox booster, grappling hook and parachute. The nitrox booster speeds up your cars by an extreme amount using special fuel invented by the Scrim corporation, and the parachute and hook are self explanatory. There are abilities specific to the type of car you drive, such as spiked tires on the Desert Rats to operate in the deepest sand,"
The driver of the light brown vehicle, known as Kadeem, activated his tires, exclaiming, "magnificient!"
"A Scorchers car," Ozpin continued, "has special tire covers and a plow, and can drive through the heart of a volcano,"
The driver in black, known as Taro, smugly grinned as he activated and deactivated the tires and plow on his car,
"A Wave Ripper's car can-" Ozpin was cut of as the driver of the blue van, known as Vert suddenly flew forward on jets, Ozpin adjusted his glasses before continuing, "as Mr. Wheeler just demonstrated, a Wave Ripper's vehicle has jets equipped to, in a sense, fly. And finally, a Roadrunner's car can stick to any surface by activating a piece of equipment on the bottom,"
Ruby grinned as she hit a button, causing beams of electricity on the bottom to shine, connecting with the ground, "huh, cool,"
"Cool indeed Miss Rose, now if the drivers are ready, please make your way to the starting line."
At the starting line, the racers lined up. From left to right was Banjee Kasteel, a Road Beast, Taro Kitano, a Scorcher, Vert Wheeler, a Wave Ripper, Ruby Rose, a Roadrunner, Brian Kadeem, a Desert Rat, Kurt Wylde, a Street Breed, Pyrrha Nikos, a Roadrunner, and Lani Tam, a Wave Ripper. A drone held up a street light esque start signal, as the lights turned on red, the GPS turned on, showing Dr. Tesla, "the track exists in a different dimension from our own, a dimension you won't be able to see before the race begins. When you reach 300 miles per hour, a portal between the dimensions will open, another portal at the end of the track will return you to this dimension."
"Hey Taro, you think this guy Tezla knows what he's talking about? Or is he just loco?" Banjee asked,
"It took a genius to build these cars Banjee," Taro responded,
"I somehow think Ozpin's probably the sane one of the two," Ruby cut in,
"Tezla could be a genius, and still be insane," Kurt called from across the start line. The light turned yellow, people started revving their engines. The safety harnesses of the cars automatically strapped over everyone's waist. The light turned green.
