A/N: Hello dears! Oddly enough, yes I updated once again! Sorry the chapters have been short, but I'm trying to hurry the story along while also filling it out before we get to far into the snare that is the MCU. You'll have noticed from previous chapters that I am adding some characters from different movies, adding little seeds to great quotes from our beloved Peggy Carter etc. I just wanted to let you all know that I by no means own any of these characters, especially the Assassin's Creed characters that you may recognize. Granted any AC characters that you recognize are only brought up in a brief mention so I guess I should be safe. You may recognize the last names of characters, and I am trying to remain as canon as I can to comics/ movies when it comes to these characters, while also adding onto my story. If anything doesn't seem right, do feel free to correct me or bring it to my attention. No guarantee that I will fix it, but I would rather fix a major error that would somehow cause this possible spider web of a story I am creating to unravel. If you read this author's note to the full extent thank you very much T^T No promises on when the next chapter will come, but I will try to make it within the next month at least!

Enjoy!

Chapter 6

To walk through crowds as if you are a ghost, takes a lot of skill. It takes time, and patience. You must know that, in order to continue on unnoticed, you must act like everyone else within the crowd. Keep your head down, but not too low. Walk at the same pace as those around you, so you don't draw attention and disperse the crowd. And don't run once you hear sirens. While you're blending in though, it's best not to have any serious signs of damage on your clothing. For example, you've just killed someone and have blood all over your sleeves. If you're seen walking away from the body, someone is bound to become suspicious and go after you. That's why we wear our robes, even to this modern day. Our jackets and hoods have grown with the times, but the style still hasn't changed. You're still going to see us wearing hardier material, to help withstand burns, stab wounds or possibly bullets… though we're still working on bullet proofing. But a young woman, walking down a street in Manhattan with a burnt glove, tears falling down your face and hair in disarray… well you're going to draw attention.

I can still hear the man's screams of agony, calling out for help from the red eyed demon that set his arm a flame. Once you smell the scent of melting flesh…. It stays with you. And after seeing your hand engulfed in flames… it's hard not to become hysterical. I don't know how many blocks I've ran, nor do I know if I'm being pursued. All I know is, I don't know what's going on, and that nothing like this has ever happened to me. So, I'm going to the place I know I will find sanctuary.

I burst through the doors of the library, hand clutched to my chest as I shuffled to the section with 590 animals and rushed to the painting, pushing it aside and using a small dagger to unlock the secret door. Slipping through the small crack before it could catch any wandering eyes, I moved through the dark hallway as I pushed the door close. Keeping my head down, I rushed through the foyer of the hideout and through another hallway before stopping at two large doors. Lifting a shaky hand, I rapped my burn free hand against the door before entering the den of my mentor.

"Elanna! What are you doing back so soon, I would have thought you would be buried deep in secretary work?"

I shook my head in disbelief as I paced in front of his desk. My heart pounding as I stared at my hand, unable to keep the phalanges from shaking as I curled them into a fist.

" My child… what is the matter?"

I looked up at Mentor Jason, his weary eyes searching for answers that I couldn't possibly give him. I shook my head and continued my pacing. I'm sure I was a right sight, blonde hair torn from it's hasty style, my dress disheveled and covered in soot and… blood.

"I…. I think I burnt someone Mentor."

I could feel the words hang in the air as if I just told him I was a pacifist. I looked back up at him then lifted my right hand, remains of my burnt glove dangling from my wrist in a blackened tatter. The older man shook his head at me before stepping around his desk and up to my hand to further inspect.

"You… burnt someone? How my child?"

I snapped

"I don't know how! All I know is that this man wouldn't leave me alone no matter how many times I told him too. Then the next moment I grabbed his forearm to get him to let go and then he's screaming in agony as my hand erupts into flames!"

I wrenched my hand out of my mentor's and cradled it to my chest as I felt a cooling sensation rush through my arms and into my fingertips. I sat down as I began to breath rapidly, my vision turning spotted as I began to hyperventilate in my panicked state.

" I think you need to see that doctor you rescued. And I think you need to do it now"

I shook my head as I stared owlishly into my mentor's eyes, my breaths still coming in ragged as I fought off the cool flush throughout my body. My mentor reached his hands out to me and pulled me up, walking with me to a secret door that led to a parking lot behind the library and placed me into a black vehicle. Without another word mentor Jason turned over the engine and began driving. I leaned my head against the door of the vehicle, fighting to keep my eyes open as the cool flush continued to expand through my body.

Just as we crossed over the Brooklyn, Queen line did everything go dark.

I awoke to the smell of coffee and what smelt like cake. The sound of a child's laughter dancing lightly through the air as the sun hit my eyes through a gauzy curtain. Turning my head slowly I noticed a woman sitting by my side, a ball of yarn in her lap as she knitted what looked like the beginning of a sock… or maybe a glove? I inhaled deeply only to let it out in a sputtered cough, phlegm and saliva landing on my lips as I rush to sit up, hand flying in front of my mouth as the cough raked through my body.

" My goodness, If I did not know any better I'd zay you had tuberculosis with that cough."

I looked up at the brown haired and brown eyed woman as she held a glass of water in front of me, her other hand on my shoulder as she nodded towards the glass. Lifting a shaking hand, I gently took the glass from her and tipped it into my lips. I suddenly realized how thirsty I was and drained the glass of its contents. The woman smiled kindly in my direction before gently prying the glass from my fingers, standing and leaving the room. I shook my head as another cough escaped my mouth, hand flying up again in attempt to ward off any spittle flying everywhere. Spinning my legs over the side of the bed I lied upon, I took in my surroundings as the quiet murmur of three voices drifted through the air. Taking in a controlled breath, allowing my lungs to fill until it hurt to attempt anymore, I cast my gaze around my surroundings.

The gauzy curtains drifted in the late October breeze, the air chilling just enough to warn against keeping the windows open much longer. The room I was in was small, but considering the children's toys that sat in one corner, it made sense that there wasn't much more room besides what was needed for a bed and dresser. I looked down to my hands and noticed my other glove was removed, bringing to my attention that I had been changed into a worn yellow sleeping gown that reached my ankles.

"You gave us a certain fright Fräu·lein. I say your mentor was ready to beat me black in blue despite the protection your order is giving me."

Glancing up quickly, I noticed Doctor Erskine entering the room with a glass of water and a journal which still had signs of being new.

" If I am being honest here, I had hoped I wouldn't have had to see you until almost a month from now. But, considering zhe circumstances… well, lets just say I'm also glad to have you here wiz me."

Reaching for the glass of water, I carefully avoided the doctor's fingers before rubbing at my eyes from the stress. Erskine sat on the chair that his wife had once occupied, removing a pen from his pocket as he flicked through the pages of his journal for an empty page.

"Do you have any idea what's happened to me Doc?"

Watching the elder man carefully, I noticed how his hands had a slight shake to them. Whether it is from the time and stress that he had accrued from his time being held prisoner, or from nerves dealing with myself… I couldn't tell. I could tell, that once his eyes met mine, a determination that wasn't in them at the laboratory settled there.

"Zhere are not many possibilities zhat could account for what your mentor spoke of. So, tell me fräu·lein… vhat exactly happened?"

Exhaling heavily, I lifted the glass of water to my lips before draining the liquid in one gulp. My stomach expanding quickly, threatening to expel the sudden onslaught of water that it didn't have time to prepare for. Inhaling slowly through my nose, I turned my blue eyed gaze onto the doctor before quietly telling him of everything that transpired with the construction worker, his slightly wrinkled face not giving way of any reaction the man may have to the events that occurred later that day… or yesterday.

"Zo… you tell me zhat zhis man grabbed you, and once you got angry enough you placed your hand on him and set him on fire?"

I shook my head rapidly, leaning forward to rest my elbows onto my knees, hands reaching up to grasp at my hair.

"No… I don't know Erskine. One minute I'm acting like a normal woman being harassed by a man, then the next I feel this rush of cold through my body! I grabbed the man with a hard enough grip that I heard something pop, then fire…"

Nodding his head, Erskine began writing in his journal. Muttering to himself the while to gather his thoughts before standing suddenly and leaving the room. I blinked slowly at his sudden exit before shaking my head in disbelief. Sagging my posture even more, I began to lay back down only to be halted as Erskine popped his head through the door.

"Sorry, I zhought I said follow me. Come with me fräu·lein!"

Sitting up quickly, I quickly slid off of the bed and wrapped my arms around my torso as I followed the doctor through a small den and to what looked to be a closet door. He opened it slowly, reaching up and pulling on a string twice before a click echoed through the empty closet.

"A treat from your friends. I never would have zhought secret doors would come in handy."

He walked into the small closet and disappeared, the sound of footsteps echoing as he descended a staircase. Shaking my head, I followed the man into a dark staircase. Skin producing goose bumps as a damp cool breeze brushed against my body. Reaching back slightly I pulled my hair in front of my shoulders, acting as a scarf around my neck to hopefully keep the chill of a cellar away.

"At ze prison camp, I hear Schmidt speak of another man by ze name of Klaus Schmidt who vas also conducting experiments. Only, zhey were not of ones similar to mine. Vhere Johann was wanting to create soldiers, Klaus Vas looking to find and weaponize soldiers. Taking twin siblings, any individual who did not look or seem normal. Zhose he took would disappear."

He turned on a couple of lamps to illuminate what looked to be a giant bolt, large washers and screws jutting about the object as Erskine fiddled with other levers and handles.

"What is this Erskine?"

"Zhis my dear, is an Electron Microscope. Invented only nine years ago by a college of mine named Ruska. With zhis, maybe we can unlock the secret to why you suddenly caught fire.

Sadly it wasn't as quick as Erskine had hoped. After hours of drawing blood and tissue samples, Erskine was unable to find anything that seemed out of the ordinary. It is difficult, knowing that something has changed within yourself, but not knowing as to what exactly it was.

"Now, I don't vant you to lose hope. I vill figure out why it is zhat you can suddenly procure fire. It vill sadly take time."

I stood at the bottom step leading from his families apartment building, the faint roaring of the city creating a background for our discussion as the sun began to set. I looked down at my bare hands, Erskine's wife not owning any gloves to lend me left my mark free for the world to see.

"It's hard to lose something that you never had in the first place Doc… Thank you anyways."

I turned to see Mentor Jason pull up beside me on the sidewalk, his hand raising in greeting towards the Doctor. Releasing a despondent breath of air, I walked towards the vehicle when I heard Erskine speak once more.

" Fräu·lein Finnegan!"

Looking back towards him, I watched the elder man approach me with something in hand. He extended the item out towards me, his glasses gleaming against the headlights of cars as they drove pass.

"Write down everyzhing that happens. It may seem insignificant to you, but the smallest occurrences can bring to light more information we need to figure zis out."

Staring down at the dark blue journal, I reached out slowly, grasping the leatherbound pages and carefully avoiding the Doctors fingers. Turning around once more, I opened the door to the vehicle and made a motion to step inside when a thought echoed through my mind.

"What… What sort of things was that other German guy looking for?"

Erskine looked down at his feet before turning back towards his front door, head downturned as he placed his hand on the door's frame. He looked over his shoulder at me before releasing a breath that caused his body to sag and age all at once.

" If zhe rumors were true… He vas looking for humans with zhe ability to do zhe impossible."

With that Erskine stepped over the doors threshold and shut the door behind him, leaving me on the sidewalk with an impatient mentor behind the wheel of what humans once thought was impossible.
