**Important Author's Note: First of all, I want to apologize for the long wait. So much has happened this past year and while I can't promise no more delays, there might be, I assure you that I will be working on this series. I am not and will not abandon this series because despite this being a reboot, this series is my baby.
**Secondly: Would you guys be into a separate story that would show glimpses of the future of the series? Like moments throughout the series from your choosing (and mine)? They would be seen as teasers of what's to come as this story unravels. It will include moments with future character Mia Alexander (depending on the moment, time frame the chapter will take place). So like, it would be a glimpse of the future. For example, I would write a glimpse of what would happen with the characters when Dean came back from Purgatory. Did anyone else go with him? We'll see! But I got this idea while watching the final episodes and thought this would be fun.
It seemed like Sam hadn't slept in days, which in a way was true but it made Jenn all the more happy to see him finally getting some rest. It may have only been a couple of hours since he's slept but it was good enough for her. They had just finished the case in Blackwater Ridge, Colorado where they had to put down a wendigo. The search for John Winchester continued.
Up until a couple days ago, Jenn had so many questions about why John had left them a case in Jericho and now Blackwater Ridge. Why would he start cases only to abruptly stop and move on? But there was something Dean said back in the woods that answered enough of her questions.
"This book. This is Dad's single most valuable possession—everything he knows about every evil thing is in here. And he's passed it on to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he left off. You know, saving people, hunting things. The family business."
There had to be truth to what Dean said that night and that meant it was possible that John may be on the trail of the Yellow Eyed Demon and wanted to solely focus on that.
Jenn sat at the table on the new laptop she just bought (with one of her fake credit cards) in search of another case. She had a lot on her mind so she couldn't sleep...which sucked because both boys were sleeping not 10 feet away from her.
Part of her was still, and probably will be for a while, worried about Sam. He's been having nightmares left and right about Jessica's death and he won't talk about it with either her or Dean. In a way, she couldn't blame him. He'd never really been through something like this in his life. He never remembered losing his mom but to watch Jessica burn on that ceiling? That was a whole other ball game. She could only hope that one day, he'd open up about it even if it's just one sentence.
Then along came Dean. Before Sam came back, Jenn was beginning to question how she feels for Dean. Hell, she was still wondering if she felt anything from her night with Sam. She used the cases to keep her mind off this but once they were over, it'd come barreling right back. Regardless, this definitely would complicate things moving forward should she choose to act on any of these feelings. But that would also mean Sam and/or Dean reciprocated. But her heart was leaning towards Dean the most. She can't ignore the stronger bond they forged since Sam left. She had fun with Dean and enjoyed their back and forths. But would Dean even feel the same?
And last but not least, there was still the problem of her father. The voicemail still on her phone weighed heavily on her mind. He's been calling ever since but no other voicemails have been left. Closer than she thinks...he can't be...he was just trying to scare her, right?
Sam woke up with a start, snapping Jenn out of her thoughts.
"You okay?" Jenn asked gently from her spot at the table.
"Yeah. I'm fine." Sam replied with a small sigh, sitting up. "What are you doing awake?" He looked over to the clock, which read '2:14 am'.
"I couldn't sleep. Figured I'd see if I could find another case or just anything, really."
Sam got up and sat across her at the table, tiredly running a hand over his face.
"Anything good?"
"Nope. Nothing." She shrugged.
"You okay?" Sam asked her after a moment, noticing that distant look in her eyes as she stared at her computer screen.
"Yeah. Of course, why?" Jenn replied quickly, snapping back into reality.
"It's just-you've seemed lost in your thoughts a lot since we left Palo Alto. Something on your mind?"
Jenn paused for a moment. Damn, Sam may have been gone for 4 years but he could still read her like a book.
"No, no I'm good. I've been feeling really run down lately so I'm usually just trying to fight off sleep." She lied. "I could be saying the same for you. You haven't said much about what happened." Sam sighed and leaned back in his chair. "I'm not saying you have to talk about it but know if you ever want to-"
Sam nodded, offering her one of those smiles he gives when he's sad. He pulled his dad's journal in front of him and began to read. Jenn's phone jingled, signalling a text message. She opened her text and froze.
"Three blind mice. See how they run."
Beneath the text was a picture of Sam, Dean and Jenn with the ambulance after they finished up the wendigo job in Colorado.
"Who is it?" Sam asked, looking up from the journal.
"N-no one. Just one of those chain texts." Jenn quickly gathered herself.
"I hate those."
"Me too."
It's been weeks and the three young hunters have yet to track down John. But it's not like they haven't kept themselves busy in the meantime. They've dealt with a ghost drowning people, which calmed after the spirit of the boy got his intended target, and a demon crashing planes. The demon disappeared in a cloud of black smoke so they could safely assume it was over. Bloody Mary...the famous urban legend turned out to be real. Well, she was until they killed her.
Both Sam and Dean had little breakthroughs the last 2 cases. In different ways. One was Dean, who had a thing about flying, managed to get on a plane and even endured an almost crash. Jenn could safely assume going through the worst of it would help to quell his fears. But Sam...it seemed after their Bloody Mary encounter that Sam was working through his guilt over what happened to Jessica. There were things about his relationship with Jessica and her death that he hadn't told Jenn or Dean. He may never tell them but for now, he needed to keep them to himself.
Jenn had been staring at the most recent picture from her had in her phone. It was within the last few days because she remembered the diner in the photo. It was of her and the boys sitting down and eating. Problem was, it was from inside the diner instead of outside. Once more, it was followed with a piece of a nursery rhyme. This time was from the 'Little Miss Muffet' rhyme. The line read, "Along came a spider…"
Was Jeremy supposed to be the spider in this scenario? Clearly she (and Sam and Dean?) had to be Little Miss Muffet, right?
"Alright…" Dean started, parking at a gas station and immediately breaking Jenn from her thoughts and theories. She flipped her phone closed and paid attention to what Dean was saying. "I figure we'd hit Tucumcari by lunch, then head south, hit Bisbee by midnight…" Dean continued, taking notice that Sam hadn't looked up from his phone. "Sam wears women's underwear."
Jenn let out a laugh, earning a small smile from Dean as he looked back at her and Sam just sighed.
"I've been listening, I'm just busy." Sam told them, his eyes still on his phone.
"Busy doing what?"
"Reading emails."
Dean got out of the car and went around to fill the tank with gas. As the windows were still open, he continued the conversation.
"Emails from who?"
"From my friends at Stanford."
"You're kidding. You still keep in touch with your college buddies?"
"Why not?"
"Well, what exactly do you tell 'em? You know, about where you've been, what you've been doing?"
"I tell 'em I'm on a road trip with my big brother and best friend. I tell 'em I needed some time off after Jess."
"Understandable." Jenn added loud enough for Dean to hear.
Although, that 'best friend' line kind took the wind out of her sails a little bit.
Oh crap...maybe she did have some leftover feelings for Sam.
"Oh, so you lie to 'em."
"There it is."
"No. I just don't tell 'em…everything." Sam interjected.
"Once again, understandable."
"Yeah, that's called lying. I mean, hey, man, I get it, telling the truth is far worse."
"So what am I supposed to do, just cut everybody out of my life?" Sam got a reply in the form of a shrug from Dean. "You're serious?"
"Look it sucks, but in a job like this, you can't get close to people, period."
Jenn deflated a little more hearing that from the other Winchester. Sam thinks of her as a best friend and Dean didn't wanna get close to anyone. She just...ugh. She didn't know how to feel because it's not like she asked for these feelings for either of them.
"You're kind of anti-social, you know that?"
"Yeah, whatever."
It got quiet for a moment as Jenn continued to overthink everything, Sam read his emails and Dean pumped the gas.
"God…" Sam said as he read his most recent email.
"What?" Dean and Jenn asked in unison.
"In this email from this girl, Rebecca Warren, one of those friends of mine."
"Is she hot?" Dean asked, earning an eye roll from Jenn as Sam ignored him.
"I went to school with her, and her brother, Zack. She says Zack's been charged with murder. He's been arrested for killing his girlfriend. Rebecca says he didn't do it, but it sounds like the cops have a pretty good case."
"Dude, what kind of people are you hanging out with?"
"No, man, I know Zack. He's no killer."
"Well, maybe you know Zack as well as he knows you."
"They're in St. Louis. We're going."
"Look, sorry about your buddy, okay? But this does not sound like our kind of problem."
"It is our problem. They're my friends."
"St. Louis is four hundred miles behind us, Sam. Jenn, help me out here."
Jenn opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out. She couldn't choose a side because she happened to be on both. One hand, she thought it would be good to check in on Sam's friends and the other, she just wanted to get to Bisbee.
"Maybe we can go to St. Louis?" Jenn finally replied, her voice going up a couple of octaves. She tended to only do that when she was unsure of anything but tried to lighten the mood.
Dean exchanged a look with Sam right after and sighed. He finished filling the gas tank, only slightly irritably returning the gas nozzle to it's designated area with a slam.
"He's taking it better than I expected." Jenn mumbled to Sam.
Sam knocked on Rebecca's door causing Dean and Jenn to exchange a look.
"I can't believe you made me drive all the way down here." Dean mumbled to her.
"I didn't make you do anything." Jenn replied in the same tone but with a smile.
"Maybe we can go to St. Louis." He playfully mocked. "You knew I would cave."
"It was Sam's puppy eyes and you know it."
Dean let out a sound as Sam knocked on the door once more. He took notice of the slightly different dynamic of Dean and Jenn over the past couple of months. Dean had been flirting with Jenn constantly and she seemed either oblivious or chose to ignore it. Hell, sometimes she would flirt back so she couldn't be oblivious. Hey, it was about time Dean finally acted on this crush he's had on her for years. Well, at least he hopes his brother does.
Sam snapped out of his thoughts when the door opened revealing the smiling Rebecca.
"Oh my God, Sam!" Rebecca greeted happily.
"Well, if it isn't little Becky." Sam replied with a smile.
"You know what you can do with that little Becky crap." The two friends hugged.
"I got your email."
"I didn't think that you would come here."
Dean stepped forward and held out his hand for a hand shake.
"Dean. Older brother." Dean interrupted, introducing himself.
"Hi." Rebecca shook his hand.
"Hi."
"Jenn Santos. Old family friend of theirs." Jenn decided to introduced herself as well.
"Nice to meet you." Rebecca shook Jenn's hand also.
"We're here to help. Whatever we can do." Sam added after introductions.
"Come in."
The three hunters entered the house, Dean being the one to shut the front door behind them.
"Nice place." Dean commented.
"It's my parents'. I was just crashing here for the long weekend when everything happened. I decided to take the semester off. I'm gonna stay until Zack's free." Rebecca led them to the kitchen.
"Where are your folks?" Sam asked.
"They live in Paris for half the year, so they're on their way home now for the trial. Do you guys want a beer or something?"
"Hey—" Dean started with a smile.
"No, thanks. So, tell us what happened." Sam cut off his brother.
"Well, um, Zack came home, and he found Emily tied to a chair. And she was beaten up and bloody, and she wasn't breathing." Rebecca said, tears forming in her eyes. "So, he called 911, and the police—they showed up, and they arrested him. But, the thing is, the only way that Zack could've killed Emily is if he was in two places at the same time. The police, they have a video. It's from the security tape from across the street. And it shows Zack coming home at 10:30. Now, Emily was killed just after that, but I swear, he was here with me, having a few beers until at least after midnight."
"You know, maybe we could see the crime scene. Zack's house."
"We could?" Dean and Jenn asked in unison.
"Why? I mean, what could you do?" Rebecca asked.
"Well, me, not much. But Dean and Jenn are cops." Sam replied.
"A detective, actually." Dean added after he laughed.
"Really? Where?" Rebecca inquired.
"Bisbee, Arizona. But we're off duty now."
"You guys, it's so nice to offer, but I just—I don't know."
"Beck, look, I know Zack didn't do this. Now, we have to find a way to prove that he's innocent."
"Okay. I'm gonna go get the keys."
Rebecca left the room, leaving Sam, Jenn and Dean alone in the kitchen.
"Oh, yeah, man, you're a real straight shooter with your friends." Dean told Sam.
"Look Zack and Becky need our help." Sam defended.
"I just don't think this is our kind of problem."
"Two places at once? We've looked into less."
Dean once again looked to Jenn for help.
"He's right, Dean." Jenn said to him, a small shrug. "Worse case scenario, this isn't our kind of thing. And even then, that's not that bad. I just think we should look at the possibility."
Dean sighed out loud, looking up to the ceiling. There's no point in arguing because Jenn and Sam won. Once again, Jenn was a driving force for him because she always had to make sense. He hated when she did that.
"You're sure this is okay?" Rebecca asked Dean and Jenn as they walk to the house.
"Yeah. I am an officer of the law." Dean replied, earning a look from Jenn.
"That was so bad." Jenn whispered to him as they walk into the house.
Rebecca stayed on the porch steps as Sam, Jenn and Dean look around the house, the walls and furniture covered in blood.
"Beck, you wanna wait outside?" Sam asked her.
"No. I wanna help." Rebecca answered, ducking under the police tape and going inside.
"Tell us what else the police said."
"Well, there's no sign of a break-in. They say that Emily let her attacker in. The lawyers—they're already talking about plea bargain." She looked around the room and began to cry. "Oh, God…"
"Look, Beck, if Zack didn't do this, it means someone else did. Any idea who?"
Rebecca shook her head before she remembered something.
"Um, there was something, about a week before. Somebody broke in here and stole some clothes...Zack's clothes. The police, they don't think it's anything. I mean, we're not that far from downtown. Sometimes people get robbed."
Dean opened the door where the neighbor's dog was barking at them.
"You know, that used to be the sweetest dog." Rebecca told him as she walked up behind him.
"What happened?" Dean asked.
"He just changed."
"Do you remember when he changed?"
"I guess around the time of the murder."
Dean looked at Rebecca for a moment as she stared at the dog before walking away. Meanwhile, Jenn was questioning Sam about a picture of himself with Zack and Rebecca.
"You guys were close, huh?" Jenn asked curiously.
"Yeah. Other than Jess, I was hanging out with them most of the time." Sam replied with a fond smile as he stared at the picture.
"So, the neighbor's dog went psycho right around the time Zack's girlfriend was killed." Dean said as he walked over to them.
"Animals can have a sharp sense of the paranormal."
"Yeah, maybe Fido saw something."
"So, you think maybe this is our kind of problem?"
"No. Probably not. But we should look at the security tape, you know, just to make sure."
"Yeah."
"Yeah."
"Hey Rebecca, the tape...the security footage, um...you think maybe your lawyers could get their hands on it? You see, Dean and I don't have that kind of jurisdiction." Jenn turned to Rebecca as she walked over to them.
"I've already got it. I didn't wanna say something in front of the cops." Rebecca referred to Jenn and Dean, earning a small chuckle from Dean. "I stole it off the lawyer's desk. I just had to see it for myself."
"Alright."
The four of them sat in Rebecca's living room watching the security tape.
"Here he comes." Rebecca commentated as the video showed Zack entering his house.
"22:04, that's just after ten." Dean added, noticing the time stamp. "You said time of death was about 10:30."
"Our lawyers hired some kind of video expert. He says the tape's authentic. It wasn't tampered with."
As Dean and Rebecca spoke, Jenn and Sam exchanged a look. They both seemed to notice something on the tape.
"Hey, Beck, can we take those beers now?" Sam asked in a subtle effort to get her to leave the room for a moment.
"Oh, sure." Rebecca agreed as she got up to go to the kitchen.
"Hey." She turned around to see what Sam wanted. "Maybe some sandwiches, too?"
"What do you think this is, Hooters?"
Rebecca lightly chuckled to herself as she walked away.
"I wish." Dean said lowly, earning a playful slap to his shoulder from Jenn. "What is it?"
"Check this out." Sam pointed out, rewinding the tape.
Once he hit the play button, one of the frames showed Zack looking at the camera, his eyes glowing a silver look to them. He paused the tape on the frame.
"Well, maybe it's just a camera flare."
"I don't know about that." Jenn mumbled.
"That's not like any camera flare I've ever seen. You know, a lot of cultures believe that a photograph can catch a glimpse of the soul." Sam added.
"Right." Dean said, listening to his brother.
"Remember that dog that was freaking out? Maybe he saw this thing. Maybe this is some kind of dark double of Zack's, something that looks like him but isn't him."
"Like a Doppelganger."
"Yeah. It'd sure explain how he was in two places at once." Sam noticed Jenn staring at the screen intently. "Jenn?"
"Jenn?" Dean tried when she didn't reply to Sam.
"Hmm?" Jenn looked over at the boys as she snapped out of her thoughts.
"You okay?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine. It's just...this seems familiar. I remember something like this from a case my dad worked on when I was kid."
Rebecca walked into the room with a tray, sandwiches and beer on top for all of them. Sam quickly hit the play button to hide the flare.
Dean put the impala in park behind Zack's house and turned off the engine. He, Sam and Jenn got out of the car.
Jenn let out a yawn as Dean took a sip of the coffee in his hand.
"Alright, so what are we doing here at 5:30 in the morning?" Dean grumbled.
"I realized something. The videotape shows the killer going in, but not coming out." Sam explained, looking around.
"So he came out the back door?" Dean stood next to Jenn, leaning against the hood of his car.
"Right. So, there should be a trail to follow. A trail the police would never pursue."
"Cause they think the killer never left. And they caught your friend Zack inside." Jenn added with a yawn, leaning her head on Dean's shoulder, closing her eyes.
"I still don't know what we're doing here at 5:30 in the morning." Dean added quietly, taking another sip of coffee. When he finished, he looked to Jenn, a small but tired smile on his face.
Sam found a clue when he checked out the telephone pole.
"Blood. Somebody came this way." Sam said, catching their attention.
"Yeah, but the trail ends. I don't see anything over here." Dean scanned around carefully.
Jenn's eyes opened as an ambulance drove past them, the three hunters exchanging a look.
Sam, Jenn and Dean walked up to the scene, joining the crowd and observing what was happening. A man was already handcuffed and being put into the police car.
"What happened?" Dean asked a woman next to him.
"He tried to kill his wife. Tied her up and beat her." The woman replied.
"Really?" Sam asked.
"I used to see him going to work in the morning. He'd wave, say hello. He seemed like such a nice guy."
"Thank you." Jenn said to the officers on the scene before her and Dean walked away.
They found Sam on the side of the house, looking for clues to possibly explain what was happening.
"Hey." Dean called out to his brother. "Remember when I said this wasn't our kind of problem?"
"Yeah." Sam replied.
"Definitely our kind of problem."
"What'd you find out?"
"Well, we just talked to the patrolman who was first on the scene and heard this guy, Alex's story. Apparently the dude was driving home from a business trip when his wife was attacked."
"So, he was in two places at once."
"Exactly. Then he sees himself in the house, police think he's a nutjob."
"Two dark doubles attacking loved ones in exactly the same way."
"Could be the same thing doing it, too."
"Shapeshifter." Jenn said, catching the boy's attention as she remembered her dad's old case which seems to very much apply to this one.
"Something that can make itself look like anyone?" Sam offered as he agreed.
"Every culture in the world has a shapeshifter lore. You know, legends of creatures who can transform themselves into animals or other men." Dean added.
"Right, skinwalkers, werewolves."
"We've got two attacks within blocks of each other. I'm guessing we've got a shapeshifter prowling the neighborhood."
"Let me ask you this—in all this shapeshifter lore, can any of them fly?"
"Not that I know of."
"No." Jenn answered.
"I picked up a trail here. Someone ran out the back of this building and headed off this way."
"Just like your friend's house."
"Yeah. And just like at Zack's house, the trail suddenly ends. I mean, whatever it is just disappeared."
"Well, there's another way to go—down." Dean said, causing the three hunters to look down, noticing a manhole.
Dean opened the manhole and the three climbed down to take a look around.
"I bet this runs right by Zack's house too. The shapeshifter could be using the sewer system to get around."
"I think you're right. Look at this."
Jenn stood behind them as they bent down, looking at a pile of blood and skin on the ground. There wasn't enough room for her and to be honest, it's not like she was in any hurry to see that any closer.
"Is this from his victims?" Sam asked.
Dean took out his pocket knife and picked up some of the skin with it, earning a grimace from Jenn.
"Ugh." She said aloud, the back of her hand covering her mouth.
"You know, I just had a sick thought. When the shapeshifter changes shape...maybe it sheds." Dean suggested.
"UGH." Jenn turned around and walked to the ladder, already beginning to climb up.
"That is sick." Sam agreed as Dean put the skin back on the ground.
Dean opened the trunk and the arsenal, pulling out a gun clip and loading it with bullets.
"Well, one thing I learned from Dad, is that no matter what kind of shapeshifter it is, there's one sure way to kill it." Dean started.
"Silver bullet to the heart." Sam finished with a small smile on his face.
"That's right."
Sam's phone rang. As he walked away to answer it, Jenn stepped up next to Dean, loading a clip of her own.
"So how did that case end, anyway?" Dean asked her, loading the finished clip into a gun.
"Which one?" Jenn asked with a slightly confused tone.
"You know, the one you mentioned last night. With your dad."
"Oh, right. Well, nothing happened. He lost it in a chase and it skipped town. I blamed the beer, he blamed me."
"How old were you?"
"8." Jenn sighed as she loaded her clip into her gun while Dean worked on another for Sam.
Dean sighed quietly to himself. Jenn has still yet to fully open up to any of them after John took her in. He thought Sam might've known but he found out that Sam doesn't know everything either. They all know enough to form an idea in their minds but not the extent. Sometimes he would forget that bad things happened to her before she came to them. The way she was, the way she acted...it was the complete opposite of how she was when they met. Jenn was withdrawn, quiet and sad in the beginning. But Dean realized that once she got comfortable and trusted them, she opened up a little more personality wise. The only references to her childhood were in passing moments like last night and just a few moments ago.
"This is Sam." Sam answered his phone, stepping away as Jenn and Dean put together everything they needed.
"Where are you?" Rebecca asked on the other line.
"We're near Zack's, we're just checking some things out."
"Well, look, Sam, just stop, cause I really don't need your help anymore."
"What are you talking about?"
"I told the lawyers that we went to the crime scene."
"Why would you do that?" Sam asked, scoffing to himself.
"Well, I told them that we were with police officers. And they checked it out, and they told me that there are no Detectives Dean Winchester and Jenn Santos."
"Beck—"
"No, I don't understand why you would lie to me about something like that."
"We're trying to help."
"Oh, trying to help? Do you realize that that was a sealed crime scene? This could have just ruined Zack's case."
"Beck, I'm sorry, but—"
"No, goodbye, Sam."
Dean and Jenn exchange a look, catching the end of Sam's side of the conversation. They knew she was mad at him. Jenn and Dean walked over to Sam, Sam's face etched with disappointment.
"I hate to say it, but that's exactly what I'm talking about. You lie to your friends because if they knew the real you, they'd be freaked. It's just...it'd be easier if—" Dean said.
"If I was like you." Sam finished for him.
"Hey, man, like it or not, we are not like other people. But I'll tell you one thing. This whole gig? It ain't without perks."
Dean passed a gun to Sam, who took it and tucked it in the back of his jeans. The three hunters headed to the sewer, going back down the manhole. Jenn passed Sam a flashlight as they got to the bottom. They began to make their way through the sewers as precisely and quickly as they could.
"I think we're close to its lair." Dean told Sam and Jenn as he trailed behind them.
"Why do you say that?" Sam asked.
"Because there's another puke-inducing pile next to your face."
Sam quickly turned to see the pile of skin and blood on the pipe next to him.
"Oh, God!" He groaned in disgust.
Jenn's face scrunched up as she looked away, looking around the area where a pile of clothes sat in the corner.
"I'd say you were right about the lair." Jenn said to Dean.
"Looks like it's lived here for a while." Dean commented with his light shining on the clothes.
"Who knows how many murders he's gotten away with?" Sam turned the light as he went to face Jenn and Dean where the shapeshifter in the form of the man who was arrested earlier stood behind Dean. "Dean!"
Both Jenn and Dean turned to see the shapeshifter, the shapeshifter punching Dean in the face. As Dean fell to the ground, Jenn and Sam both took shots at the shapeshifter as he ran away, all of them missing. They then moved to check on Dean as he held onto his shoulder, moving to stand up.
"Get the son of a bitch!" Dean commanded, causing Jenn and Sam to run after it before he followed shortly after.
Sam was the first out of the manhole the shapeshift came out from, followed by Jenn. As they got out, they hid their guns in their jackets as there were people around. They glanced around, looking for any sign of the shapeshifter and which way he might've gone. Dean caught their attention as he grunted as he got through the manhole, also hiding his gun in his jacket.
"Alright, let's split up." Sam said.
"Alright, I'll meet you around the other side." Dean agreed, motioning what the other side meant.
"And I'll take the middle ground." Jenn added.
"Alright." Sam replied as the three hunters split up.
Jenn kept her hand on her gun as she looked around the area. She followed some of the crowd walking the sidewalks but at a slightly faster pace as she looked for the shapeshifter. It wasn't long until after she ran into Sam.
"Nothing for you too?" Jenn asked Sam as she fell into step next to him.
"Nope." Sam replied as they came to a stop at the corner where Dean was to meet them.
"He's fast. I don't think he had time to change. Not without one of us knowing about it."
"Hey." Dean called out from behind them. Sam and Jenn turned around to see Dean walking up to them. "Anything?"
"No. He's gone." Sam replied.
"Alright, let's get back to the car."
Sam and Jenn crossed the street but Dean fell behind for a moment so a car could pass. The three walked to the impala in silence, all of them seeming to wonder where to go from here. The silence was broken when they reached the impala.
"You think he found another way underground?" Sam asked Dean and Jenn, thinking aloud.
"Yeah, probably. You got the keys?" Dean motioned for the keys.
Sam stopped for a moment in thought before he turned around.
"Hey, didn't Dad once face a shapeshifter in San Antonio?"
"Oh, that was Austin. It turned out not to be a shapeshifter, it was a thought form. A psychic projection, remember?"
"Oh, right. Here ya go."
Sam threw the keys at "Dean" before walking away. He looked over to Jenn, who tilted her head to the side to motion at Dean. Sam nodded, understanding what she was saying. They both knew that wasn't Dean. He knew this "Dean" wouldn't forget this story. It was one of his first big hunts as a teenager. It was a shapeshifter. They both pulled their guns from their waistbands and pointed it at the trunk, both of them on each side as they moved towards the back of it.
"Don't move!" Sam shouted.
Jenn and Sam caught "Dean" off guard as he held his hands up in surprise.
"What did you do to him?" Jenn added.
"Guys, chill. It's me, alright?" "Dean" tried to reason.
"No, I don't think so. Where's my brother?" Sam demanded.
"You're about to shoot him. Sam, calm down."
"You caught those keys with your left. Your shoulder was hurt."
"Yeah, it's better. What do you want me to do, cry?"
"You're not my brother."
"Jenn, come on. You have to see how crazy this is."
"Is it though?" She asked, her eyes trained on him.
"Why don't you pull the trigger, then? Hm?" "Dean" glanced between Sam and Jenn. "Cause you're not sure. Come on, you know me."
"Don't." Sam said, his tone filled with anger and uncertainty.
Dean paused for a moment, sighing as he looked at both the hunters. He suddenly swung a crowbar, knocking the gun from Jenn's hand and then knocking Sam unconscious. He quickly turned around as Jenn went for her gun on the ground and hit her, knocking her out.
Sam was the first to wake up. He recognized where he was almost immediately. It was the shapeshifter's lair. He looked around to see Jenn tied up on the pillar next to him, still unconscious. He goes to move, slightly choking as some rope is pushed against his neck as he leaned forward. The shapeshifter took notice of Sam's consciousness while he wrapped the rope around his hand and elbow, to keep it from getting tangled up. He walked over to him, still looking like Dean, staring at Sam before he backhanded him.
Jenn's head fell back against the post she was tied against, her eyes opening and readjusting to the light in the room. The shapeshifter walked away from Sam, who looked over to Jenn, relief filling his eyes as he saw that she was awake.
"Where is he? Where's Dean?" Sam asked the shapeshifter.
"I wouldn't worry about him. I'd worry about you." The shapeshifter said cryptically.
"Where is he?"
"You don't really wanna know. I swear, the more I learn about you and your family—I thought I came from a bad background."
"What do you mean, learn?"
The shapeshifter stopped what he was doing, putting his hand to his head, his eyes closing. Sam looked over to Jenn, both hunters confused about what was happening. Their glances fell back on the shifter, watching him in confusion. It wasn't long before the shapeshifter let out a grunt and a sigh before looking over to the two hunters.
"He's sure got issues with you." He said, slightly pointedly at Sam. He stood up straight and began to walk over to him. "You got to go to college. He had to stay home. I mean, I had to stay home. With Dad and this one." He motioned to Jenn. "You don't think I had dreams of my own? But Dad needed me. Where the hell were you?"
"Where is my brother?" Sam demanded.
"I am your brother." The shapeshifter squatted down in front of Sam, practically getting in his face. "See, deep down, I'm just jealous. You got friends. You could have a life. Me? I know I'm a freak. And sooner or later, everybody's gonna leave me." He pulled away from Sam and looked over to Jenn. "Even you." He sighed and shook his head lightly before he went back to what he was doing.
"What are you talking about?"
"You left. And Jenn? She'll leave me too. No matter how I feel about her, it'll never be enough because she'll always want you."
"What?" Jenn asked in surprise. Her one word came out into a whisper because it was her shock trying to make sense of what was just said.
"Hell, I did everything Dad asked me to, and he ditched me too." The shapeshifter continued and ignored her. "No explanation, nothing, just poof. Left me with your sorry ass and this helpless void." He got up and slowly walked over to Sam, something to cover him up with in his hands. "But still, this life? It's not without its perks. I meet the nicest people. Like little Becky. You know, Dean would bang her if he had the chance. Let's see what happens."
He smiled and covered Sam with a sheet. He grabbed another and walked over to Jenn.
"Sorry. Just telling you like it is. And for the record, if it were me, I would've banged you a long time ago." The shapeshifter smirked at Jenn before covering her as well.
This was a lot to take in right now. And as Jenn sat underneath the cover, she listened for the footsteps to fade so she could get free. But Dean...what did that shapeshifter mean when he mentioned how Dean felt about her? Did Dean...did he feel the same way she was feeling about him? Ugh, why was she acting like she was in high school?
The room went quiet, signalling that the shapeshifter was gone. Jenn moved her head around so that her cover would fall and she could see again.
"Hey, you good?" Jenn asked Sam who did the same.
"Yeah. You?" Sam reciprocated.
"I got a headache but you know...it could be worse."
Both hunters try to get out of their ropes but they can't. Seems the shapeshifter knew that they kept something on them for this and where they were.
"Damn it. Any luck?"
"Nope. I think he found everything on me."
"Dammit." Sam whispered more to himself than anything.
Coughing sounded from nearby, catching both Sam and Jenn's attention.
"That better be you and Jenn, Sam, and not that freak of nature." Dean said, his cover moving away from his face.
Sam and Jenn share a small, relieved laugh. They looked behind them, seeing that he was okay...well, Sam could, anyway. Jenn was directly a few feet behind Dean and the pillar blocked her vision but…she got the idea.
"Yeah, it's us." Sam replied. "He went to Rebecca's looking like you."
Dean begins to work on his ropes as Jenn and Sam do the same, all 3 hunters looking for a way to either cut loose or untie them.
"Well he's not stupid. He picked the handsome one."
Jenn let out a laugh and shook her head, Sam shaking his head as well, a small sigh escaping him as he went back to work his ropes.
"Handsome one. No offense but it was probably more like he picked the one she didn't know as well so she couldn't call him out on his bullshit." Jenn said, ending with a sigh when she couldn't get free from her restraints.
"Offense that's rude." Dean called out.
"Anyway. He didn't just look like you, he was you. Or he was becoming you." Sam explained.
Dean managed to free himself from his ropes, cutting through them with the pillar he was attached to.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know, it was like he was downloading your thoughts and memories."
"You mean, like the Vulcan mind meld?"
"Yeah, something like that. I mean, maybe that's why he doesn't just kill us."
Dean got up and walked over to Jenn, with her being the closest to him and began untying her.
"Maybe he needs to keep us alive. Psychic connection."
"But all three of us? Compared to the two of you, I'm useless in this situation. She'll let her guard down around Sam because that's her friend. You," Jenn motioned to Dean as he helped her to stand. "Because you're his brother. And you're not ugly, so you got that going for you."
"Just admit it then. I'm the handsome one."
"Guys. Yeah, still tied up." Sam called out.
"Oh, sorry." Jenn replied as she and Dean went to free Sam.
"Yeah. Come on, we gotta go. He's probably at Rebecca's already."
Once Sam is freed, the three hunters quickly navigate through the sewers, following their way back to the streets. Sam pushed open the grate leading out to the streets and being the first out.
"Hey." Dean stopped Jenn for a moment as they went to leave. "You're not useless."
Jenn paused, her eyes caught in Dean's gaze. She swallowed the lump that was growing in her throat. It was just something she threw out there because that's the way she's felt for a long time. She didn't think that Dean would've really held onto it or even thought anything of it. It was like him to avoid talking about things because well...that's how he was raised.
"It-"
"Come on." Sam called out for the two, interrupting them without realizing. "We gotta find a phone, call the police."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." Dean quickly got out after Jenn. "You're gonna put an APB out on me."
"Sorry." Sam shrugged.
"This way." Jenn told them, causing them to run down the empty alleyway.
They came to a stop when they noticed a bunch of TV's on in an appliance store front, showing the news. And what was on the news? A police sketch of Dean's face. Apparently the Shapeshifter got to work quicker than they hoped and now he's on the run, leaving Dean a wanted man.
"Man! That's not even a good picture." Dean practically whined.
Sam and Jenn looked around, hoping that no one was around would take notice to the TV and Dean.
"It's good enough." Sam said, before walking away.
"Come on." Jenn pulled Dean with her as he stared at the televisions.
"Man…" He murmured to himself, allowing Jenn to pull him with her.
The three hunters speed walked back into the alley they came from, deciding to go the other way.
"Come on." Dean said irritably as he stepped into a puddle.
"They said attempted murder. At least we know—" Sam started.
"I didn't kill her."
"We'll check with Rebecca in the morning, see if she's all right."
"You think she'll want to see us after what happened to her?" Jenn asked Sam.
"Yeah, at least, I hope so."
"Alright, but first I wanna find that handsome devil and kick the holy crap out of him." Dean chimed in.
"We have no weapons. No silver bullets."
"Sam, the guy's walking around with my face, okay, it's a little personal, I wanna find him." Dean stopped walking to face Sam.
"Okay. Where do we look?"
"Well, we could start with the sewers."
"We have no weapons. He stole our guns, we need more."
They all paused to think it over.
"The car?" Jenn suggested first.
"I'm betting he drove over to Rebecca's." Dean added.
"The news said he fled on foot. I bet it's still parked there."
Dean's hand clenched into a fist for a brief moment.
"The thought of him driving my car."
"Aw, come on." Sam shrugged it off as he started walking again.
"It's killing me."
"Let it go."
Dean, Jenn and Sam ran down the back streets, making to Rebecca's. They walked around the side of the house and found the impala. Relief filled Jenn as she caught her breath. Finally, something was working out for them.
"Oh, there she is. Finally, something went right tonight." Dean said, feeling the same relief.
"Took the words right out of my mouth." Jenn told him, both of them sharing a smile.
Suddenly a police car drove up, turning the opposite way but quickly stopping.
"Oh crap."
It backed up as the three hunters went the other way where another police cruiser was waiting for them.
"This way, this way."
Dean and Jenn quickly went over to the fence, ready to scale it.
"You go. I'll hold them off." Sam told them.
"What?" Jenn asked incredulously.
"What are you talking about? They'll catch you." Dean added.
"Look, they can't hold me." Sam told them as the police officers began to get out of their cars. Sam quickly looked over to them and then back at his brother and friend. "Just go, keep out of sight. Meet me at Rebecca's."
Dean helped Jenn scale the fence before he hopped it, his leg swinging over.
"Dean." Sam called, causing Dean to stop and look back. "Do not go into the sewers without me."
Dean didn't say anything before he swung his other leg and hopped down the other side.
"I mean it!"
"Yeah, yeah!" Dean called back before he and Jenn sprinted in an effort to find a hiding spot.
The two kept a lookout for more cops looking for them...luckily for them, the coast was clear after they took Sam away.
"You think we should wait for Sam?" Jenn questioned Dean as they walked back to the impala. "I mean, I know he wants us to because who knows what's waiting for us down there…"
"But?" Dean
"But we don't know how long until he strikes again. For all we know he's already shed his skin and become someone else. I don't think we can afford to wait."
"Well, we're waiting long enough for me to get cleaned up. That's for damn sure."
Jenn let out a laugh as they got into the impala.
"Hey, uh, can I ask you something?"
Dean began to hot wire the impala. He hated doing it but since his spare set of keys were in his bag and his bag was at the motel on the other side of town…
"Sure."
Jenn paused for a moment, collecting her thoughts. She was still stuck on everything she had learned from the shapeshifter. Did Dean really have feelings for her? Or was that just a ploy for the shapeshifter to get under their skin...oh no. She lost her nerve. Part of her knew she should ask but the other part wasn't sure if she wanted to know right now. With the growing and sometimes confusing feelings about Dean on her mind, she wasn't sure if she could stand hearing that the shapeshifter was messing with her. She didn't want to possibly break her own heart, now finally admitting to herself that her hopes are up that he feels the same way about her.
"It's nothing, never mind." Jenn leaned back in the seat, mentally beating herself up.
"Are you sure?" Dean asked, the impala roaring to life.
"Yeah. It's not important."
Dean took a long look at Jenn. He'd spent enough time with her to know that she was lying. What was she avoiding?
The next morning, Jenn and Dean each grabbed a gun from the arsenal, the impala parked in the same place from the first time. As Jenn tucked her gun away, Dean checked his clip, making sure it was full and with the right bullets before he put it back into the gun.
"You sure you don't wanna ask me what you wanted yesterday?" Dean asked Jenn.
Jenn was surprised that he even brought it up. She was sure that he would've just let it go and leave it as it was. Was he bothered by what she might've asked him?
"Yeah. Like, I said, it was nothing. Just second guessing this whole going in without Sam thing." Jenn replied, stepping back from the trunk of the impala.
There it was. She was lying again. Once again, even though it bothered him, he let it go. But he was not done with this conversation. He'd just have to bring it up again in the future. She'd always been so open with him about things since she learned to trust him when they were younger, what was so different about this thing?
"I'm sorry, Sam. But you know me. I just can't wait." Dean mumbled to himself as he closed the trunk.
He couldn't worry about this now. They had a shapeshifter they needed to find.
As soon as Dean and Jenn got back into the sewers, they trained their guns in front of them. They slowly navigated their way back to the hideout they were held the previous night. The area was lit up with candles and now more chains laying around. Dean was the first to react to the noise that sounded in the 'room'. There was a figure, covered in the similar sheet that had been used on them. Jenn kept her gun trained on it as Dean uncovered it. She lowered her gun when it revealed Rebecca underneath, tied up and gagged.
"Rebecca?" Dean said in surprise.
Jenn and Dean quickly went to ungag and untie Rebecca.
"What happened?" Jenn asked the woman in front of her, Rebecca clearly shaken up.
"I was walking home, and everything just went white. Someone hit me over the head, and I wound up here just in time to see that thing turn into me. I don't know, how is that even possible?" Rebecca replied.
"Okay, okay. It's okay." Dean assured her as they finished untying her. "Come on. Can you walk?" Rebecca nodded. "Okay, we've gotta hurry. Sam went to see you."
The moment Dean, Jenn and Rebecca made it to Rebecca's house, they heard a crash from inside. Jenn and Dean ran ahead and went inside the house where the shapeshifter, looking like Dean, was choking Sam.
"Hey!" Dean called out to the shapeshifter, his gun aimed at him.
The shapeshifter looked over to Dean and got off Sam. He held his hands up, slowly backing away. Dean took no chances of the shapeshifter getting away again so he took the shot, firing silver bullets into the shapeshifter's heart twice.
Rebecca came back into the house, seeing Sam on the floor. She ran over to him, Jenn following as they checked on the youngest Winchester.
Dean walked over to the shapeshifter's body, giving him a once over. It's something he would never admit outloud but it was creepy how exactly it looked like him, down to the last detail. He then took notice of his necklace around the shapeshifter's neck. He yanked it before looking back at Sam, Rebecca and Jenn, offering them a nod. He put his necklace into his jacket pocket before moving away from the body.
As Dean looked at the map on the hood of the impala, Jenn leaned against the other side, her mind caught up on whether or not she should talk to Dean about what the shapeshifter said. Sam was saying goodbye to Rebecca when Jenn's phone beeped, signalling she had a text message.
Ashes, ashes, they all fall down.
A picture of a news report about 'Dean's' death came along with it. Jenn clenched her jaw, quickly masking her anger before Dean could look up and notice.
"I'm gonna make a quick phone call, I'll be right back." Jenn told Dean.
"Don't wander too far." Dean replied.
Jenn nodded and walked away from the impala, her eyes trained on her phone and dialing the number that kept texting her. As it rang, she looked back to see she was out of earshot from Dean as Sam and Rebecca stood further away, definitely unable to hear her. The call went to voicemail, causing Jenn to sigh in frustration.
"Listen. I know what you're doing and you're not scaring anybody. If you wanna do something, let's do it. Give me the time and place and we'll settle up. If anything, I'm the one that deserves some payback. So stop being a coward. I'll be waiting." Jenn irritably hung up the phone and took a deep breath.
She had no idea who her father thought he was stalking them and playing games. She didn't do anything to him and yet here he was acting like he deserves some form of retribution. Last she checked, he was the one the hurt her as a child. He was the one who practically left behind a broken, distrusting, terrified little girl when John Winchester took her in.
Jenn took one last deep breath before straightening her shoulders and heading back to Sam and Dean. Rebecca held up a hand to say goodbye to her, to which Jenn returned, before she went back inside her home.
"You good?" Dean asked Jenn.
"Yeah. I'm good." Jenn replied.
She did it again. She lied to him. He knew the moment he set eyes on her after her phone call that she was tense. She had this anger in her eyes as well. Dean always knew she could hide things if she really wanted to but he always found her eyes to be expressive. He could read them like a book.
"So what about your friend Zack?" Dean asked Sam. He'd have to talk to Jenn about things later. Maybe when she's had enough time to cool down.
"Cops are blaming this Dean Winchester guy for Emily's murder. They found the murder weapon in the guy's lair, Zack's clothes stained with her blood. Now they're thinking maybe the surveillance tape was tampered with. Yeah, Becca says Zack will be released soon." Sam replied, smiling at the end.
Dean rolled his eyes and got into the car. Sam and Jenn exchanged a small smile before following his lead.
"Sorry, man." Dean said to Sam once they hit the road.
"About what?" Sam asked curiously.
"I really wish things could be different, you know? I wish you could just be...Joe College."
"No, that's okay. You know, the truth is, even at Stanford, deep down, I never really fit in."
"Well, that's cause you're a freak."
"Yeah, thanks."
"Well, I'm a freak, too. I'm right there with ya, all the way. So is she." Dean motioned to Jenn sitting in the back. Sam looked back and Jenn looked at the back of Dean's head with a playful disbelief, causing Sam to laugh.
"Yeah, I know you are."
"You know, I gotta say—I'm sorry I'm gonna miss it."
"Miss what?"
"How many chances am I gonna have to see my own funeral?"
Dean and Sam exchanged a smile before the car fell back into a comfortable silence.
