Lydia gasps, feeling out of breath and looking around the room she is no longer in her hospital bed. She looks around her surroundings and sees that she is in her old home that she shared with Brian Zeller when they were married.
She sees Brian and tries to get his attention by asking "Hey!, Brian". Brian can't hear her. Lydia is frightened out of her mind and starts to scream his name, but nothing in return.
Lydia sees that Brian is with another woman. Brian and the woman start to kiss and take their clothes off. Lydia tries to stop them from continuing but she can't do anything but watch them. The scene in front of her scars her mind. She then remembers that this is the day she found out that Brian had cheated on her.
Lydia is then switched to another destination; her old home that she shared with her mother/father and sister. She sees a little girl in her bed and she realizes that the little girl is her. She hears the door open and moves her head and sees her father coming inside the room. Doom hits Lydia and she remembers this day every day of her life; the times that her father would abuse and molest her. She closes her eyes hard. All she wants to do is sleep.
A flatline is heard; The nurse rushes to Lydia and sees that she is non-responsive, she calls for the Doctors; the doctor brings in the crash cart and the doctor charges the pads at 200 and zaps her but no heartbeat is heard. He tries again at 300; nothing, when he thinks it's time to call for death. Lydia's heart beats loud and clear. The doctor sighs in happiness and goes to check on Lydia and asks the nurses to monitor her more intensively.
The scene cuts to Will sleeping next to Lydia Forbes hospital bed; we see Elaine Forbes; Lydia's mother walking inside the room. Elaine Forbes comes in; she sees Will sleep for a brief moment, then slips a shoe off one foot, gently to not disturb him.
Will opens his eyes to see an older woman sitting on the edge of Lydia's bed, lying next to her, reading softly. He realizes he's been covered with a blanket and likes it.
Will Graham asks "Who are you"?
The old woman looks at him and smiles "I'm Elaine Forbes, I'm Lydia's mother, Who are you?".
Will looks at her and sits up and says "I'm Will Graham I work with your daughter in the FBI". Elaine Forbes smiles at that and goes back to reading.
Will asks her "What are you reading?" Elaine Forbes tells him "Edgar Allen Poe; when Lydia was a teenager she was very obsessed with The Tell-Tale Heart." Elaine is finished with the short story and tells Will to sleep, Elaine heads out of the door and heads to the bathroom.
Will looks at Lydia once more before heading out to see Jack about a potential suspect. Will goes into the elevator and is about to leave the hospital when all of a sudden his phone rings as he's stepping out. He answers. Will says "Hello"
A moment as Will listens, his expression falls and Will runs. Will sprints down the stairs toward Lydia's room. Will gets to Lydia's hospital room. Will halts outside the door. Reaching into his trousers for his revolver, he takes a measured step into the room.
Will finds it empty. No Eldon Stammets. No Lydia Forbes. Elaine Forbes comes back in seeing Will look frantic. Will asks her "Where is she?Where is she?"
Elaine tells him "They took her for tests". Will is already running for the stairs. Will bounds down the stairs, several steps at a time. Eldon Stammets pushes the gurney carrying comatose Lydia Forbes.
Will Graham rushes out. Eldon startles, moves.
Will raises his gun and SHOOTS. BAM!. The bullet takes out a piece of Eldon Stammets shoulder, his gun clattering to the floor as he reaches for it. Will pulls Lydia's gurney into the hall, moving in on Eldon, kicking his gun out of reach.
Will looks down at Eldon, who is in shock. Will looks confused and asks him "What were you going to do with her?" Eldon says "We evolved from mycelium. Only reintroducing her to the concept." Will tells him "By burying her alive?"
Eldon looks at him and says "That journalist said you understood me." Will shakes his head and says "I don't." Eldon scoffs "You would have, I know who you're reaching for. You would have found her in a field where she could finally reach back."
Will explains "You should know I'm a terrible shot. I was trying to kill you." He taps the Emergency button on the gurney and leans in the doorway as cops, nurses, and paramedics come.
Fast forward to Will at Hannibal office.
Hannibal sits in front of Will and asks him "When you shot Eldon Stammets... who was it that you saw?"
Will tells him "I didn't see Hobbs". Hannibal explains "Then it's not Hobbs' ghost that's haunting you, is it? It's the inevitability of there being a man so bad that killing him felt good." Will tells Hannibal "Killing Hobbs felt just."
Hannibal explains to Will "Which is why you're here. To prove that spring of zest you feel is from saving Abigail not killing her dad."
Hannibal continues "You didn't kill Eldon Stammets." Will Graham is contemplating something " I thought about killing him. I'm still not entirely sure that wasn't my intention pulling the trigger,
I should have stuck to fixing boat motors in Louisiana."
Hannibal insinuated "A boat engine is a machine, easy to solve. You fail, there's a paddle. Where was your paddle with Hobbs?" Will whispered "You're supposed to be my paddle". Hannibal reassured him "I am. Did you feel so bad because killing him felt so good?" Will weighs that statement, finally admitting to Hannibal: "I liked killing Hobbs." Hannibal agreed "Killing must feel good to God, too. He does it all the time, and are we not created in his image?" Will tells him "Depends on who you ask".
Hannibal explains "God's terrific he dropped a church roof on thirty-four of his worshippers last Wednesday night in Texas, while they sang a hymn.". Will declared "Did God feel good about that?" Hannibal nodded and said "He felt powerful".
Will tells Hannibal "I met Lydia's mother today; she was nice and just like Lydia full of light". Hannibal smiles at Will " Light brings everyone happiness doesn't it" Will laughs and nods.
Hannibal contemplates asking this but his mind is wandering "If you don't mind; what room would Lydia be in?" Will tells him "Room 317". Hannibal nods. Will leaves after his appointment back home.
Hannibal looks at his watch and sees that it is 9pm and he gathers his coat and grabs his keys to go to the hospital. Hannibal is on Lydia's room floor, he walks into her room. He sees how fragile she is just like a coffee cup ready to be shattered but she is also strong. He sits next to her and grabs her hand.
He tells her "You are a fighter, your mind is fragile but you can fight this". He kisses her forehead and smells her; she smells of lilac and vanilla. Hannibal enjoys the scent and sits back down. He watches her the whole night never leaving until the morning.
