Chapter 11: I Face My Daddy Issues
"HIE, a foreigner?! What's a foreigner doing at our school, Reborn, you're going to get Hibari-san angry-!" "This is your chance to learn some Italian, Dame-Tsuna! Repeat after me, I'm stupid." "I-I am shtupid…?" "R-R-Reborn-san, why would you make Juudaime call himself an idiot?!" "I did what? Reborn, what the hell-!" "It's your fault for being so naive, Dame-Tsuna." "Reborn-!" "Stop teasing him so much, Reborn-san. Why didn't you just tell Vongola Decimo that I can speak Japanese?" "It's more fun - educational that way-" "Did you just say it was fun - ah, whatever, I give up… Huh, Kamiya-senpai?"
Tsuna was the one to notice my presence, but I was too preoccupied with the elephant in the room to say a single word. Said elephant turned to the sound of 'Kamiya' and then locked eyes with mine.
Unnerving red met black.
The newcomer in the group, a blonde haired Italian man, stood the tallest at the impressive height of 198 cm (roughly 6"5). He looked to be in his early 40s, and his blood red eyes seemed connected to the last name Sanguigno, meaning literally blood-red in translation.
It didn't take long for me to figure out that this man is my… father.
I averted my eyes. "Reborn, Tsuna's right. Why'd you bring him to the school roof, of all places? You know Hibari's going to get ticked off."
Reborn's charcoal eyes looked calculative. "Hibari gave his approval already. After I said he would make you stronger, he let him be."
Takeshi blinked, before grinning. "Woah, Hibari did? Wow Nee-chan, he must really have a thing-"
My father frowned, betrayal lurking beneath his eyes. "Izanami, I don't remember you having a younger brother before I left, unless…?"
I glared at him. "Shut up you piece of shit, you have no right to feel betrayed even if it's far from the fucking truth-"
"Nami," Reborn warned.
He smiled wearily. "It's okay, Reborn-san, I kind of had that coming."
Takeshi frowned, placing a concerned hand on my shoulder. "Nee-chan, is that your…?"
I crossed my arms, and released a deep breath. "Everyone, this is my father."
And then, there was silence.
"Eh?!" "But you look 100% Japanese, Kamiya-senpai! How can this be - ?" "Wait then that dumb woman that bullies Juudaime is the daughter of the Sanguigno Nono, how did I not realize, I'm a failure of a right hand man for Juudaime - " "Huh?!"
Deeming an introduction necessary, he bowed to Tsuna. "Hello, Vongola Decimo. I am Luca Sanguigno, the ninth boss to the Sanguigno famiglia. I came here at Reborn's request to train a member of your family, my daughter Izanami, and will be staying in Japan as long as I can before I am forced to return to Italy for my duties."
Tsuna panicked. "P-please don't bow to me, Kamiya-senpai's father! It's quite rude for me to accept something like this, this is Japan after all-"
My eye twitched. "Don't worry Tsuna, I don't have a father." I had prepared myself to meet him, but it didn't mean I was going to remain civil about it. He left my mom alone and he dared to come back now, because it was mafia-related?!
The statement seemed to cause tension in the atmosphere, but I simply sighed. "So? What's your reason for bringing him to school, Reborn? I could've just met him after work."
Reborn's eyes were shadowed by his fedora. "You know very well how urgently this needs to be addressed, Nami. You met him yourself, after all."
Tsuna frowned. "'Him'? Reborn, who are you talking about - "
"From this point on, you are to train with your father until he deems you ready. That means you'll be taking a break from school and from work. I'm sure during that time Luca will provide for your living expenses."
I pursed my lips. "'Kay." I left the roof first, aware of the numerous gazes that lay on me.
Forced father-daughter bonding upon our first meeting... well won't this be fun?
We were in my dad's limousine, us sitting across from each other in the back seat.
"So that boy Hibari... is he your boyfrie-"
"No."
"How did you meet that 'little brother' of yours-"
"Why do you care?"
"How's your mother been doing these days?"
"Father, she's dead."
He froze. "What?"
I narrowed my eyes. "You heard me."
His eyes were wide. "…How long has she...?"
"Been dead? Two years."
He pursed his lips. "You're speaking Italian… Did your mother teach you?"
I averted my eyes. "Who else would?"
He smiled bitterly. "…I'm sorry, Izanami."
I snapped. "In what way are you sorry?! If you were sorry you would've at least been there for her! When she was alive, at the very least at her funeral…!"
He grimaced, regret and guilt all over his face. "If I knew I would've gone…! I exchanged letters with her you know, but Hiromi never-!"
"Father, are you stupid?"
He winced.
I glowered at him. "Did you even know her?! You know full well her character! Hiromi Kamiya, my stupid stubborn mother, would never, never tell her husband she knows is never coming back that she's struggling! She taught me Italian, for goodness sake, because she knew you'd come back when it's too late!" My voice broke, and I felt tears well up as I began in Japanese once more, "Okaa-san... my stupid, stupid Okaa-san..."
My father's fists tightened at his lap. "I'm sorry. I didn't want you two to become known to the mafia world because I knew it would just result in danger for you two." He laughed bitterly. "I wasn't even going to come back, to be quite honest, and then Reborn-san told me that you had joined the Vongola... I guess my abilities to hide you two were ineffective against the world's number one hitman." He placed his hand onto my tightened fists. "I'm not asking you to forgive me, Izanami. In fact, I don't want you to. My life has been far too lucky what with meeting your mother and having you - it's time I atone for my actions. The only way I can do that is the only way I know how, and that's helping you get stronger."
I looked up at him and his eyes. "Why did Reborn turn to you to help me?"
He averted his eyes. "I heard from Reborn… you're a natural-born hitman. Despite how much you hate it, you are still my daughter." He stared at me. "Do you know what the Sanguigno famiglia specializes in, and why we were named after our eyes?"
phew.
that was an emotional rollercoaster to write. hope it read the same way LOL.
I felt like this was a good time to address the constant switch between Japanese and Italian.
yes, it's a bit weird to have bold in the middle of a sentence, but I didn't want to even attempt Google Translating Italian words onto here and then translating it at the end of the sentence, because 1) Google Translate is untrustworthy af and 2) Google Translate is untrustworthy af.
and that's on periodt.
so, it'll continue to be like that from now on, bold words will signify Italian being used and no bold will be Japanese. other than the author's note section, of course, but I'm sure you guys know the difference LOL.
anyway, thanks for reading yet another chapter!
yours truly,
ally
