Chapter Two – Magic
The snow was falling heavily outside, coating the fields and roofs of the houses in the early morning. Just outside the town of Rochester, Samuel Black sat with his feet dangling out of his bedroom window on the second floor, looking out at the landscape he had come to love since his adoption. It had been a little over two years since Samuel had been rescued from St. Mary's Orphanage for Boys by the Wilson family. There was not much to the family, with it only being Elizabeth, Joseph, and the newly added Samuel, but it was enough for the young child who had already endured too much for a boy of his age.
Samuel had recounted his years growing up in the horrific institute to Elizabeth and Joseph over the last couple of years he had been living with them. Telling them of the beatings he received not only from older children but from the adults put in charge of the orphanage, or the countless times he was thrown in solitary and forgotten about until days later when another child was to take his place. Even at the elderly age the couple were, they had been distraught at some of the stories Samuel had told them. It had taken them months of tender caring before Samuel would even give either of the Wilsons something as small as a hug, and even longer before they could get him to open up about the nightmares that plagued his dreams almost every night. Elizabeth had made it her personal mission to rid Samuel of his skeletal frame and nurse him back to health, forming a very close bond between the two, with Samuel seeing Elizabeth as the grandmother like figure he had missed out on all those years spent in the orphanage.
"Samuel! How many times have I told you not to hang out that window? It's dangerous, you could fall to your death." Came an exasperated voice from behind the young boy. A pair of arms wrapped themselves around Samuel, lifting him back in from the window.
"Sorry Gran." Samuel said laughing, not a hint of remorse showing in his words. "I was just looking at the snow." He tried to explain.
"You don't need to be dangling out the window to see the snow. Next time try just looking out from the safety of inside." Elizabeth said, walking over and shutting the window. "How are you not frozen? How long were you out there?" She questioned Samuel, bending down to examine him.
"I'm fine Gran." Samuel said, shying away from her. He did not know how he was not frozen considering he was only dressed in his pyjamas, but he was not going to complain either since he had been able to enjoy the view free from any discomfort.
"Alright then, lets go open some presents, shall we?" Elizabeth asked, giving Samuel an encouraging smile.
"Yes! Presents!" Samuel shouted excitedly with a toothy grin, grabbing Elizabeth's hand, and dragging her out of his bedroom. Leaving Elizabeth at the top of the stairs, he practically skipped half of the steps in his dash down to the sitting room. It was tradition that every Christmas morning the family would go downstairs and open presents under the Christmas tree to start their day off. This year being no different from any other year, Samuel ran straight for the tree and sat waiting for Elizabeth to join, occasionally shaking a present that was addressed to him.
Elizabeth arrived a few minutes later carrying a cup of steaming tea. She walked over to the armchair beside the fireplace which she frequently occupied, setting the cup down on the small table beside the chair. Quickly lighting the fire she sat down looking at Samuel for the first time since entering the sitting room, laughing lightly at his impatience as he shook two presents, one beside each ear, trying to decipher what was inside the wrapping.
"Will you just open them already." Elizabeth told him, taking a sip of her tea.
Samuel gave her a crooked smile before tearing into the first present. "I love it!" Samuel said, holding up a jumper which was still half covered by the wrapping paper.
"Try it on then! I want to know if it fits." Elizabeth laughed, reaching over, and pulling the excess paper off the jumper. Samuel stood up taking his pyjama top off and replacing it with his new present. "It fits perfectly, you look great Sam." She said, giving him a kind smile.
"Thanks Gran!" Samuel said, sitting down and grabbing another present. "Here this one is for you." He said handing Elizabeth a poorly wrapped present that looked like it was covered in more tape than wrapping paper.
Samuel waited excitedly as Elizabeth opened the present with a great deal of difficulty. Finally, after fighting through what seemed like three layers of tape Elizabeth was able to pull out the box that was hidden inside. Glancing up at Samuel she could not help but become eager to see what was inside, as if his excitement were contagious. Carefully opening the end of the box, she stuck her hand inside and pulled out a bunch of bubble wrap, revealing the present. Immediately tears sprung to her eyes and she took in a shaky breath. She tossed everything to side, keeping the present in her hands. She was unable to take her eyes off it, even as she wiped away a few tears that were trailing down her cheek.
"D-Do y-you not l-like it?" Samuel asked worriedly, sitting cross-legged in front of her. He did not know what to do, as he sat watching the person he loved the most in the world cry over a present he had bought them.
"It's perfect." Elizabeth answered, trying her hardest to compose herself. Sitting in her hands was a statue of two grandparents hugging their grandchild. It perfectly resembled Joseph and Elizabeth hugging Samuel. She stood up placing the statue on the mantlepiece, having to move a few photo frames to make room for it. "It's the best present I've ever gotten." She said, bending down to wrap Samuel in a hug. "Now open some more presents." She laughed, sitting back down while still admiring the statue now placed above the fire.
Samuel proceeded to tear open present after present, receiving a variety of gifts like a football, toys, and many clothes. For each gift he received he stood up, giving Elizabeth a hug, and thanking her thoroughly. By the time all the presents were opened Samuel was more than overwhelmed by Elizabeth's generosity, crying outright as he looked at everything he was given. Elizabeth sat down beside him, giving him a hug of her own.
"You have one more present." She whispered, pulling out a small, wrapped gift from the back of the tree. "It's from Joe."
Samuel looked up at Elizabeth through watery eyes. "R-R-Really? Grandad got me a present?" He asked, moving his gaze down to the present that was being handed to him.
"Yes, here take it." Elizabeth replied softly, smiling at him in encouragement.
Samuel continued to stare at the small gift, too afraid to reach out and touch it. He was trying his best to hold back more tears from spilling out, just the thought of who it was from was enough to stir his emotions. He took a deep breath, reaching out to take the small box. He opened the wrapping paper slowly with precision, trying to avoid ruining any part of the present. Once the paper was off a small ring box sat in his hands. He lifted the lid of the box to reveal a beautiful gold ring with three white-gold stars at the centre of the band.
"It was his ring; he wore it all the time. It won't fit you now, but it will when you're older." Elizabeth informed him with a sad smile.
"T-T-Thank you." Samuel whispered, tears streaking his cheeks again.
"How about you bring all your presents upstairs while I make us some breakfast, yeah?" Elizabeth said, standing up and heading into the kitchen wiping away tears of her own.
Samuel gathered up all his presents and ran up to his bedroom, depositing everything on his bed except the ring box containing his most valuable gift. He walked over to his desk and place the box safely on the shelf above, giving it lingering look before he went to sort out his other gifts. After about five minutes Elizabeth had called up the stairs to tell him breakfast was ready, so he quickly set off to fill his stomach for the day. Right when he entered the kitchen his stomach gave a loud growl as if it were an animal that had smelled the food.
"Someone's hungry." Elizabeth laughed setting a plate of pancakes down on the table for Samuel to eat.
"Yeah." Samuel chuckled, happily digging into the food that had been made for him.
After a quick breakfast Elizabeth sent Samuel upstairs to get ready for church. Even though they never went to mass, it was part of their tradition to go on Christmas day. Once ready the pair walked outside and headed down the road to the church. Samuel felt the ceremony lasted hours but eventually they bid the priest farewell and they were on their way.
Rather than head straight out onto the road, the pair walked over to a side gate that lead to the graveyard. Elizabeth squeezed Samuel's hand lightly, more for her own sake than his. Walking past headstone after headstone, they finally arrived at their destination. Looking back at them was a simple headstone with the name Joseph Wilson etched into it. It had been nearly seven weeks since Joseph had died due to a heart attack, but it had left a huge hole in the lives of the remaining family members. Samuel did not dare speak as they stood rooted to the ground, Elizabeth shedding silent tears. He just gripped her hand tighter trying to let her know he was with her. After a few minutes of mourning Elizabeth wiped away her tears, said a quiet 'Merry Christmas' and brought Samuel home.
For the rest of the day Samuel was outside playing in the snow with his new toys, encased in layers of clothing to prevent getting cold. Eventually he was called in for dinner, where he sat in awkward silence. The loss of Mr. Wilson weighed heavily on the dinner table as they ate. Normally he would be cracking jokes or telling stories, but utter silence had now taken its place. After dinner Samuel went up to his room to continue playing. He lay on his stomach down on the floor, making up fictional scenarios for his action figures to fight in. Many hours had passed before Elizabeth came up to check on him.
"Bedtime Sam." She said, lifting him up and tucking him into bed.
"Do I have to go to bed? It's Christmas!" Samuel groaned.
"Yes. All your toys will still be there when you wake up." Elizabeth answered, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Goodnight darling." She said, turning off the light and closing the door.
Samuel lay in bed tossing and turning for what felt like hours. Deciding he was not going to get to sleep any time soon he hopped out of bed and quietly crept out of the room. He walked down to the sitting room, his mind subconsciously bringing him to the cabinet that contained all of Mr. Wilsons trinkets and small belongings. Opening some of the drawers at the bottom to use as makeshift steps, Samuel climbed up to reach the top press where there was a box containing the items he was looking for. He had just made it high enough to open the doors on the tips of his toes when he heard creaking from upstairs. Moving quickly, he opened the doors and grabbed the box, but his foot slipped just as he wrapped his hands around it. He went crashing to the ground bringing a few drawers with him, but his biggest concern was the box that was flying through the air after him. He closed his eyes and reached out his arms preparing for an impact. But it never came. Slowly opening his eyes, he looked up to see the box floating in the air. He took in a sharp gasp at the sight, crawling backwards on his elbows afraid it could fall at any time. Before he had time to process what was happening, he heard footsteps pounding down the stairs. The sound broke his concentration, and the box came crashing to the floor at his feet.
"Samuel?" Elizabeth asked, bounding into the room. Upon entering the room, she stopped dead in her tracks, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. Items were scattered everywhere, covering the floor. "Get to bed." She said, it was quiet and soft but there was something about the way she looked that Samuel knew not to argue.
"I-I-I'm sorry Gran. I w-was just trying to look at Grandads things." Samuel stuttered, standing up.
"Bed. Now." Mrs. Wilson said strongly.
Without another word Samuel headed up to his bedroom. He was still in shock of what happened and knew that there was no way he would be able to sleep tonight. He hopped into bed thinking about the floating box. He did not know what happened exactly, but he knew it was him who had levitated it. Feeling even more restless than before he sat up looking around the room. His eyes eventually fixed on the small velvet box containing the ring that he had been given for Christmas earlier that day. Concentrating hard, he stuck his hand out and willed the box to come to him. At first it did not move an inch, but after the third attempt it started to shift. Putting even more concentration into his actions he pictured the box flying into his hands. What Samuel did not know was just as it lifted off the shelf the door to his bedroom opened to reveal Mrs. Wilson. Her eyes had just focused on the little box as it zoomed across the room and into the outstretched hand of Samuel.
"W-W-What w-was…" She attempted to speak but was in pure shock and could not form a sentence.
Samuel looked up, finally realising she was there. He had a huge toothy smile on his face. "Gran! I have magic powers!" He said excitedly, holding out the little velvet box.
