Sarah could feel Jareth watching her but she refused to make eye contact with him. The sooner I find this, the sooner it's over. It was supposed to be a comforting thought but instead all it did was worry her.

She paused in her reading, finger hovering over the page as she thought about what he said earlier. "I brought it back when I took you home last night."

That was impossible, right? He must be teasing her again, trying to get under her skin. But what if...what if he wasn't? She had to consider the possibility that he was telling the truth.

Her mind went back to this earlier when she had woken up at the desk - back to her lie. Well, it was more an omission than an actual lie. It was true that she'd woken up at the desk, it wasn't true that it was when he'd come into the study - it was because of that strange dream.

She didn't know where the dream had come from; she didn't recognize anything around her or the clothes she wore, let alone the feeling when she'd seen him. It was like a deep ached had suddenly been soothed.

She fought the temptation to peek at Jareth, to compare him with the Jareth she'd dream of. Everything about him was different in his dream - his age and his clothes, of course but the biggest shock were his eyes.

Gone was any trace of coldness and sadness, instead they were full of warmth, joy and hope. "Did you find something?" Jareth's voice whispered in her ear, startling her from her musings.

"Uh, no, I didn't." Sarah shifted away from him, fighting the blush that threatened to bloom across her cheeks. She bent her head over the book, her finger fidgeting as she tried to make herself focus on the words before her.

"Maybe you need a break, my sweet." Jareth straightened. "You look a bit flustered. Of course, magic can be difficult to understand - even for the most experienced people. It can take years to figure something out."

Sarah didn't even have to look at him to see the smirk, she could hear it - almost feel it radiating off him. Turning her head to glare at him, Sarah opened her mouth but before she could say anything, everything began to shimmer and shiver.

What is he doing now? She looked around, her head whipping around. Catching sight of Jareth, she was shocked to see that he was disappearing along with the study walls.

Sarah jumped up, reaching out towards him as the shimmer grew larger. "Jareth! What's going on?"

"I don't know. It's not my magic." His voice sounded faint, miles away from her. Suddenly the shimmer exploded, showering her in sparkling droplets, leaving her in totally darkness.

A shiver ran down Sarahs back as she felt around, feeling something cold and hard beneath her fingertips . No, please, let me go back!

Jareth tried every spell he could think of as he watched Sarah disappear. Nothing was working and then she was gone. Where did she go? He paced the room, growing more frustrated with each step.

Jared stopped, pulling an orb from his jacket. Closing his eyes, he tossed it into the air. He waited but nothing happened, the orb just dropped back into his hand. Frustrated, Jareth threw the orb across the room.

He couldn't even travel to her world!

If I didn't send her away...Jareth didn't know what to think. He'd thought that perhaps the magic connection would wear off at some point but he hadn't expected it to be so soon.

He threw himself down in the chair, feeling his mood growing worse by the minute. If I can't get her back... Jareth shook the thought from his head and looked at the books before him. If I want to get her back, I guess I'll have to go through what she's been through.

He couldn't help but sigh as he looked at the desk before him. It was so much worse to go through this all alone with no one to entertain him and keep him company.

Sarah shifted on the bed, unable to comprehend what was going on. One minute she'd been sitting in the study, the next minute - back here. It made absolutely no sense.

We had a connection, something more than magic it seems so why? She stood up, staring at her reflection in the mirror. An idea came into her head and she closed her eyes, mouth moving but no words coming from her lips.

A knock at the door sounded and she jumped, disappointed as she seen that she hadn't returned. The door opened and her father peeked in, his face apologetic.

"I'm sorry sweetie but we need you to babysit Michael again." Sarah didn't say anything, just nodded slowly as her father left.

Sarah changed and made her way downstairs, in a daze up until they left her alone with Michael. She sat down, rocking him slowly when a thought struck her.

Biting her lip, she hesitated slightly. "Sorry, Michael, but I have to go back and I can't think of any other way. I have to try." She shifted him around to look him in the eyes. "I hope you understand. "

She stood, holding him out away from her, taking a deep breath. "I wish the Goblin King would take you and make you one of his goblins." She spoke every words slowly and carefully, squeezing her eyes tightly closed.

After a few moments, she opened them. Nothing had happened. She sunk back into the chair, holding Michael tight to her chest as the tears began to flow. Will I ever see you again?
