Chapter Forty Two: Revelations.
Sam didn't seem to register Jake and me staring at him in astonishment and concern. He shuffled further into the house and he closed his eyes, screwing his hands up into fists. His presence brought a distinctive gloom to the room and I instantly felt tense and protective. I glanced at Jake, who looked shocked in turn. As I followed his gaze back to Sam, I realised Sam probably didn't want Jake to witness what looked like an imminent breakdown.
"I think you should go." Both men looked sharply up, as my voice broke the silence. I turned to Jake pointedly and his brows furrowed. He looked apprehensively at me, clearly hesitant to leave me alone with a derailing Sam. While I wanted nothing more for Jake to stay and make light of the day, we needed privacy now, "Please."
Jacob's eyes darted around my face, assessing my seriousness, before he nodded. He walked to the door, before looking back at me. His eyes flicked to Sam and back to me in questioning. Closing my eyes, I shook my head in response. Accepting Sam and I needed some pace, he left us alone, and closed the door quietly.
As soon as the lock clicked, I strode over to Sam and grabbed his fists in my pale hands. I waited for his eyes to look at me, not through me. It took him a few minutes of quiet, steady breathing, before he looked down at me. In his dark eyes, I could see distress and hurt, confusion, anger, pain, and hopelessness. Tears clouded his vision and he released his fists and dropped them out of my grasp.
"Bella?" He murmured, his voice sounding a long way away.
"Its okay, Sam, I'm here." I reassured him, "Tell me what happened?" Sam violently flinched away from my question. He stepped back from me and I saw the walls going up again. But I wasn't letting them go up, not this time, never again, "Sam Uley, you will tell me what's going on. You will tell me everything."
"No." His mouth twisted in a grimace. It was like it pained him to lie to me, to push me away. But I was stopping that. I was going to stop all of the distance and pain between us, today.
"I want to know everything, right now." Standing my ground, I shadowed him as he backed away. Each advancing step made him look increasing more like a caged animal. His eyes darted around the room, looking for an escape. But not this time, not again. He backed into the door handle of the front door and I cornered him there, "Tell me now."
"I can't." Sam growled, his body shaking. It was like his body was becoming possessed. His head was shaking violently no, his shoulders shuddered, his muscles tensed and relaxed erratically. I could see in his eyes the anguish and rage swarming his vision, turning them into stranger's eyes. Heat seemed to roll off his tortured form and he seemed to be resisting the urge to convulse forward, as a snarl formed on his lips.
"I can't help unless you tell me what's going on? Sam, please, tell me what's going on? I need to know!" I cried in frustration.
"You can't do anything!" He yelled and I stepped back in shock. Sam never shouted. His voice was like a beast's and his expression was so dark, I barely recognised the man beneath it. But I refused to be pushed away anymore.
"Sam!" As he flung the door open, I grabbed his wrist to stop him leaving again. But I quickly dropped it, my palm scolded by his skin. I held my hand up in surprise, looking for damage. The skin looked unharmed and I looked up in shocked puzzlement, "Sam?"
He was already backing down the porch, his body aggressively shaking. Strange noises burst from his mouth in angry rumbles, but his eyes looked horrified. I couldn't understand what was happening to him, I was frozen in terror at the sight of him. Never had I ever seen or heard such a thing, it was like his body was trying to tear itself apart.
"I'm…sorry…" Sam seemed to say as he suddenly contorted. So suddenly, I hardly believed my eyes, I watch my brother turn into a wolf. If I had blinked, I would have missed the entire transformation. He changed forms from a human to an animal, a wolf. But this wolf was huge, as big as a horse at least, and emanated a presence of power in its black fur.
A scream tried to crawl up my throat, but I shove it away. The wolf, Sam, stopped shivering and stood tentatively in our front yard. He didn't seem to know how to handle this situation, any more than I did. Taking a deep breath, I pushed away my shock and disbelief, and tried to take control of this situation.
"Sam?" I stepped off the porch and held my hand out. Sam hesitated for a moment, before stepping towards me. His damp noise ducked to press into my upraised palm and I gasped. He quickly withdrew and I hurried to reassure him, "No, Sam, it's okay, it's okay."
Slowly, I brushed my fingers through the soft fur on his face, hoping to assure him. Now I could see why he had hidden this from me; he didn't think I could handle the supernatural. If only he knew about Edward and his family, if only he knew how well acquainted I was with the land of science fiction. I smiled at him and ruffled the top of his head, much like he used to do to me when I was a child. He seemed to blow out a chuckle in response and I stepped back to look at him properly.
His wolf was beautiful, majestic. He looked strong and capable in this form, much like his human personality. He was still my brother, my Sam, beneath these secrets. Relief swelled my heart and I hugged his chest, a move unexpected by both of us. Our breaths held in unison for a moment, before we both relaxed. It was as if we had crossed a line, one he had jumped over months ago, and we were finally on the same page again. I knew it would not be simple, but I felt content to be in the know.
I had Sam back, that's all that mattered. Supernatural complications didn't scare me.
