Prompt: "This wasn't supposed to happen." (Requested by Anonymous)

...This wasn't supposed to happen.

This was never supposed to happen!

How could this have happened on his watch? How could he have let this go? How had he allowed this?!

This wasn't right. It wasn't supposed to be Lloyd. He was the one who lived! He was the one who won the battle! He wasn't the one who… the one who...

No. Kai was supposed to be the one who suffered. The one who protected. The one who saved the day. The one who survived despite the pain. He was the big brother who gave up everything for his sister, the blacksmith who gave up his forge to be a ninja, the boy who grew up fast because he had to. He was the one who was supposed to keep this from happening, to take the blow, to be selfless.

Now… now he held his broken brother in his arms and knew that he had failed.

In his lap, Lloyd's usually green-clad body was a mess of fabric and red, stained by blood he'd lost. He was limp, unconscious– completely defenseless. One good hit to the head was enough to ensure that, and it was a miracle that Kai had fended off the one who felled him.

Now, Kai growled, lifting Lloyd in his arms. He was taking his brother to safety, battle or no battle. These enemies could wait. When Lloyd was safe, then he could fight.

When Lloyd was safe, there would be a high price to pay for hurting his little brother. Kai swore it there and then. Nobody messed with his family.
