A/N- This chapter isn't great, but it's necessary development for James, so I hope you enjoy, and please review!

James strolled confidently down the corridor, emboldened by his encounter with the blubbering first year(James was a first year himself, but he didn't think of himself that way; he knew he was far superior to his puny peers) and flanked on either side by Remus, who was oddly jittery, and Sirius, who held his head high, strutting confidently. Peter wasn't within range of James' peripheral vision, but James knew he was there, trailing skittishly behind like a wounded puppy.
He rounded the corner confidently, stopping dead in his tracks when he spotted a flash of fiery-red hair disappearing around a fork ahead of him. He jerked his head sharply, indicating that his friends should go on without him. They obeyed silently, Sirius claiming James' spot at the head of the group. James nodded at them, before taking off down the corridor, swerving at the last possible moment, before coming to a screeching halt. Lily stood perpendicular to him a few yards ahead, talking to… Snivellus? What the hell? He stood there, gawking, as he watched the pair, who were bent over a schedule, an expression of immense concentration painted across Lily's features. Her gaze shot up abruptly, and she began scanning the corridor before her, before nudging Snivellus, who had looked up to follow her gaze, and pointing to a door toward the end of the hall.
"There," she said decidedly, "that one. I'm sure of it." She turned to smile warmly at Snivellus, who grinned back.
"Thanks, Lil. You know I'm hopeless with this sort of thing." Lil?!
"No problem," her smile broadened, "I'd better go," she spun, disappearing around another bend.
Snivellus' smile remained well after she'd gone. James cleared his throat sharply, causing him to jump, before whirling to face him.
"Wha- how long have you been standing there?!"
James ignored the question, choosing instead to ask one of his own.
"So, you know Evans?" he asked in the most nonchalant tone he could muster.
"...yeah?" Snivellus replied, confused.
"How well?" James persisted. Snivellus studied him silently, confused. A moment later, understanding slowly filled his eyes. Shit.
Snivellus smirked at him, before darting off down the corridor and disappearing through the door Lily had indicated. James murmured a string of colorful language under his breath, before turning on his heel and heading in the direction his friends had gone not long before.
