As Team Avatar sat around the fire, they watched as their food boiled and bubbled away in its pot.
The day after the victory celebration on Kyoshi Island, it had been decided that their mere presence on the island was putting it at increased risk of another Fire Nation attack, and with the day of black sun drawing ever nearer they were needed further north anyway. Therefore, they had taken the difficult decision to leave the island behind.
Ever since then, they had been gradually travelling further north by day, making sure to stay close to the western coast of the Earth Kingdom.
"What's for dinner?" asked Sokka.
"Don't worry, there is meat," Katara replied.
"Plus a vegetarian option," Zuko added. Since his addition to the team, Zuko had generally been placed on cooking duty because his firebending made lighting fires so much easier.
"More like an insanity option," Sokka mocked.
"You are insufferable sometimes," Katara shook her head.
"Whatever, everyone else will back me up," Sokka responded confidently.
"Actually, we all agree with Katara."
"And you, Suki?" Sokka looked at her with mock betrayal.
She nodded, but immediately leaned in to kiss him.
Sokka put his most melodramatic face on, got up and walked away from the campfire. "Fine. I'm going for a walk then!"
Away from the fire, the sky was clear, and Sokka had an excellent view of the night sky in all its glory, and in the middle of it, the biggest and brightest object in the sky, was Yue.
He stopped, and leant against a tree.
"Hey, Yue," he began, feeling incredibly awkward as he did it.
"I just wanted to let you know, I'm sorry about what happened at the North Pole. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you."
Sokka knew what Yue would say if she could speak to him; that it hadn't been his fault and she had made the decision of her own free will. Like that was meant to make him feel better.
"Anyway, I hope that whatever it's like for you up there, you know, as the moon, I hope it's nice."
He sighed, and wiped away a tear.
"Aww, that was so romantic!" Ty Lee said next to him.
"I do try," Sokka replied, beginning to turn away before realizing who he was talking to.
"GAH! Fire Nation! Fire Nation! This is not a drill!" And he began to run back to the camp. I have to warn the others!
Unfortunately, he found his path blocked by Azula. "No, it isn't."
"Sokka's been a long time," Katara observed worriedly.
"He'll be fine, I'm sure of it. He's Sokka, is he not?" Zuko asked.
There was a moment of silence, and then-
"I'm going to look for him," Katara and Suki said at the same time.
"No need," Toph replied. "He's coming back, but he has company."
"That's one way of putting it," a familiar voice said. Princess Azula entered the clearing, holding Sokka and holding a fire knife to his throat. Next to them walked Ty Lee.
"You!"
"Yes, me. Surprised to see me?"
Azula turned her attention to Zuko and Mai.
"As for you two, you have a lot of explaining to do. I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation but sharing a campfire with the Avatar and his companions is not a good look."
Zuko and Mai exchanged a look, and Mai spoke. "Azula, I wish I could tel you otherwise, but it is precisely what it looks like."
"Ah, so you're traitors now." Azula laughed. "Right, then let me make this simple for you. Surrender now or I will give this water tribe peasant back to you minus his head. I don't know what he is to each of you- brother, lover, friend, or something else- and it doesn't particularly matter to me. But I'm sure it does to you, so surrender."
"You're crazy! It's two against six!" Katara shouted.
Azula merely shrugged. "Then it is an even fight."
However, Sokka had decided that he was not going to meekly wait to die. He brought his foot down hard on Azula's. The Fire Princess grunted, and Sokka was able to dodge out of her grip, and threw himself out of the way of the fireball sent towards him.
With that, the fight was on. Ty Lee began to follow Sokka but was dissuaded by a flick of Katara's water-whip. She dodged out of the way, but by now Sokka had made it back to where Suki was and had retrieved his weapons.
Azula jumped straight towards Aang, circling her arms to generate lightning. However, before she could she was knocked to the side by a rock launched by Toph. Turning towards this new threat, she launched a fireball, which was knocked off course by a blast of air from the Avatar.
Meanwhile, Ty Lee was fighting Katara, Sokka, Mai and Suki at the same time. She dodged a volley of knives from Mai, which embedded themselves in a nearby tree, ducked under another swing of Katara's water whip, and launched a flurry of punches that would have chi-blocked Sokka had Suki not managed to put her shield in the way. "Ow!" Ty Lee reeled back, having punched solid bronze, as a blast of fire roared over her head.
Azula was heavily engaged against Aang, Toph, and Zuko, who lunged at her, grunting as he used his rage to punch fireballs at her. "Oh brother," Azula taunted, "why have you betrayed us?" She ducked under another rock hurled by Toph.
"You wouldn't understand!" Zuko moved his arm, sending a wave of flame at Azula, who rolled under it.
"Try me."
"I don't have to justify myself to you!"
"Then maybe you'll justify yourself to father!" Azula ran straight up to Zuko, and used him to launch herself into the air. Her next fireball was directed at Toph, and given that she couldn't see it coming it found its mark. As the Earthbender went flying, Azula landed on her brother, knocking him over.
Ty Lee again came at Katara, but was intercepted by Mai, who stood between her and the waterbender. Ty Lee went to chi-block Mai, but suddenly stopped, turned away and attacked Suki instead. The chi-blocker was good, but she had her match in the Kyoshi warrior. The battle raged back and forth, with Suki unable to land a hit on Ty Lee, but Ty Lee unable to get any of her chi-blocking punches past Suki's shield. Then, Suki rolled out of the way and Ty Lee was faced with Sokka bringing his club down towards her. She barely dodged backwards in time.
There was then a lull in the fighting, and Azula used it to interrogate Mai.
"I can understand my brother defecting, but you, Mai? How could you do this?"
Mai's expression was full of hostility and determination as she regarded her erstwhile friend. "If you don't understand why I defected, then I guess you don't understand people as well as you think you do. I love Zuko more than I fear you."
Azula's face contorted with sudden rage as the meaning of Mai's words sunk in. "No, YOU miscalculated!" She screamed. "You should have feared me more!"
As Azula began to move her arms to generate lightning to launch at Mai, Mai grabbed a knife and prepared to throw it. Ty Lee began to run towards Azula, but before she got there a boomerang smashed into the back of the Princess' head.
"Got her!" Sokka yelled in triumph.
Just then, shouts were heard in the distance. Azula stirred feebly on the floor. "Fire Nation soldiers incoming!"
They all turned towards Ty Lee, but she showed no signs of wanting to attack them. Instead, she stood over Azula with a fearful expression on her face, gesturing at Mai to go. "Get out of here!" She hissed. Mai did not need encouraging, and neither did the others.
"Well, I guess the Fire Nation knows we're traitors now," mumbled Zuko.
