A/N: Hehe, longest chapter yet. Enjoy ya'll!
A few weeks had come and passed and Aurora began to feel much more comfortable at Hogwarts. She longer felt so anxious walking down the halls and less people stared at her as they got more used to Harry Potter's presence at the school. Her Friday night detention had also come and gone, which she spent with Hagrid. As they potted plants for the school garden, Hagrid told Aurora stories of times he's spent in the Forbidden Forest, which only left her more curious. It was very tempting.
It was now early October, a Sunday to be exact, and the trio were holed up in Gryffindor common room. They spent the afternoon playing more Wizard's Chess. Harry quickly lost to Ron every game, but Aurora was still determined to teach him how to play. All her attempts seemed to be futile however, as Harry was likely the most rotten chess player she had ever witnessed.
"I told you not to move it there," She said pointing her finger at Harry's now decapitated pawn.
Harry only laughed in amusement. The game had only lasted three minutes. It was clear he wasn't trying very hard.
Suddenly, a large swarm of fellow first year Gryffindors began to crowd the common room as McGonagall moved to pin something to the wall. It was a notice.
Pushing their way to the front of the large group, Harry, Ron, and Aurora all read it. Flying lessons were to begin Thursday with Slytherin. Aurora was promptly disappointed. First potions, then transfiguration, and now flying lessons? She felt as if escaping Draco was impossible at this rate. How could she possibly avoid him when he was in half of her classes.
"Typical," Harry scowled at the paper. Aurora was far aware at this point for his deep hatred for Draco. It was understandable. Malfoy gloated constantly about his grades, about his last name, about how good of a Quidditch player he was. There wasn't anything that he couldn't find a way to brag about.
"Just what I wanted. To make a fool out of myself on a broomstick in front of Malfoy," Harry continued to go on. He spat Draco's name out like it was poison.
"You won't make a fool out of yourself," Aurora said comfortingly stroking his arm softly.
"I bet Malfoy isn't even half as good as he says he is," Ron added.
"Eh he's pretty decent, but I'm sure you will do just fine. For all we know you could be a natural."
"I doubt it."
The week seemed to trickle by quickly, and many of the first years seemed to be just as nervous, if not more nervous than Harry. Aurora was not overly excited herself, but she was not stressed. She already knew how to fly, and she flew quite well, but she had this sinking feeling that class would be a disaster. She hoped she was just tense out of empathy for Harry, but something just felt wrong to her, and she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
Neville and Hermione sat at the breakfast table together Thursday morning attempting to go over last minute tips for flying. Aurora thought this was pointless, it wasn't something you could learn out of a book. However this did not hinder Hermione from trying as she and Neville continued to go over pointers she had picked up over the past week.
Suddenly the owls entered the Great Hall as they did every morning. Aurora held her breath like usual. She had been a perfectly complacent, responsible student since the first week of school, but her father would still want details on Harry Potter. Details that she did not have. She hardly found it acceptable to interrogate a friend, let alone feed her death eater father information about them. It's been weeks and Janus would probably send letters to her soon for her lack of dedication towards her assignment.
Spry slipped just behind her before landing on her right side. His feet carried a parcel. Harry and Ron hadn't received anything. Opening the package aware of their gaze, Aurora was delighted to see it was nothing from her father and in fact just some sweets from her mother and a note wishing her well.
Aurora grabbed a homemade chocolate wand out of the parcel before pushing the package to Harry and Ron for them to select something as well. From the Slytherin table they could hear Draco gloating about a package he had received as well.
"Can't stand him," Ron states. He glared at the back of the blonde boys head. Perhaps he was hoping he could kill Malfoy with a death state. "Always bragging about what he got from home."
"That package wasn't even from his family, it was from my mum," Aurora snorted. Draco's mother couldn't bake. In fact Narcissa Malfoy couldn't do much of anything. According to her mother she was bright in school, but Aurora felt doubtful of the possibility as she continued to be the shadow of a woman she once was. Terrified of her husband, she spent nearly all her time to herself. Far from Lucius, and far from Draco.
"Your mum?"
"Well, our house elf made them, but they were sent from her."
"Why would Malfoy be getting gifts from your mum?" Ron crinkled his eyes in disgust.
"You know this already Ron. Family friends. I grew up with Draco."
"Well Draco can-"
"I can what Weasley?" Draco suddenly appeared. He brought Crabbe and Goyle with him.
Ron's face went pink. He clearly hadn't intended for Malfoy to hear he was talking about him.
"What do you want Draco?" Aurora drawled irritated. He usually left her at peace for at least mealtimes. She was hopeful this didn't start to be a regular occurrence.
"Saw Longbottom got something nice."
Aurora pivoted her body to look at Neville Longbottom. He too had received a package from someone, his grandmother he kept saying. In his hand he held a small glass ball which glowed a deep scarlet red. A Remembrall. Poor Neville could really use one too.
Sauntering over to Neville, Draco swiftly grabbed the ball from Neville's hands. Harry and Ron leapt from their seats immediately. Aurora knew they were just itching for a fight with Malfoy by now. With Crabbe and Goyle a fight would be futile. They might be as stupid as a brick but they were large and strong.
Aurora was about to interject, but McGonagall beat her to it as she sensed tension building at the Gryffindor table.
"What's going on?" McGonagall looked at the children sternly.
"Malfoy's got my Rememberall Professor."
Aurora could see Malfoy's face tense slightly. Yes. She hoped he would finally get in some trouble.
"Just looking," He said and swiftly tossed the glass ball back to Neville. He nearly dropped it.
Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle sulked away and Aurora was glad she would not have to see them until later that afternoon when flying lessons began.
At just past three, the Slytherins and Gryffindors were positioned, facing each other, brooms laid on the ground at their sides. They were in a large field. Ron was slightly disappointed, he was hoping their first lesson would be at the Quidditch pitch.
Aurora stood facing Pansy Parkinson. The young Slytherin had a sunken face like a pug and a permanent glare that she fixed on the Gryffindors in front of her. Aurora was already well acquainted with Parkinson. Pansy hung all over Draco and would pass Aurora dirty looks anytime Draco would speak to her, which unfortunately for Aurora, was a frequent occurrence. She did however find some humor in the fact that anyone would be jealous over Malfoy. He was hardly worth obsessing over. Parkinson clearly had low standards.
Draco had not lost any interest in bothering Aurora even as the weeks continued, whether that was distracting her from studying in the library, to insulting her in the halls. She was surprised with his persistence, but not impressed with his poor behavior.
Their professor, Madame Hooch walked in between the group and began to rattle off instructions.
"Stick out your right hand and say up!" She commanded.
Throwing her right hand to her side as instructed, Aurora yelled "Up!"
The other students also yelled up in unison. Some had been more successful than others. Her broom leapt right into her grip. Observing the other students around her, Aurora noticed Harry had been successful on his first try as well. Making eye contact she grinned at him. Harry appeared much more relaxed than he had previously this week. Maybe he was a natural just like she had suggested.
Hermione was one of several who was not triumphant in getting her broom to levitate into her hand. She yelled, "Up! Up!" frustratingly as her broom only rotated and pivoted around her feet. Aurora felt somewhat bad for her. Hermione put a lot of pressure on herself to be the best, but perhaps not being good at something would be humbling for her.
Eventually, everyone did get their brooms up, and the lesson continued on.
"Now when I blow on this whistle, you kick off the ground hard. Make sure to keep your brooms steady, you wouldn't want to go slipping off the end. Now on my whistle- one, two-"
Aurora turned her head at sudden commotion further down the Gryffindor line. Neville being nervous and jumpy had already pushed off the ground. Oh no, Aurora thought. she loved Neville. She really did. But the boy was clumsy and uncoordinated. This was bound not to end well. As she had predicted just seconds before, it did not end well. Twenty feet in the air, he fell off the side of his broom and fell to the grass with a large crack. Aurora winced, that had to be painful.
Madame Hooch bent over Neville and spoke to the young boy before announcing he had broken his wrist. She directed him to get up. Putting a shoulder around him she began to walk him to the hospital wing.
"I don't want to see anyone riding their broom when I get back or I'll have you out of here faster than you can say Quidditch!" Hooch called back over her shoulder. She murmured more consoling phrases to Neville as they disappeared back into the castle.
"Look what Longbottom left behind. The little pig dropped his Remembrall," Draco tossed the glass ball up in the air and caught it.
"Give it back here, Malfoy," Harry said. Aurora wasn't surprised he stepped in. Harry was nothing but a fierce friend. He would be damned to let Draco Malfoy of all people insult someone as kind as Neville.
"No, I think I'll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to find it." Draco laughed an ugly laugh. It made Aurora's skin crawl. What a bully he has become. It only made how he spoke to her in private more confusing. How could he be so sweet and terrible all at the same time?
"Give it here Malfoy!" Aurora yelled. She had had it with him. this was more than a silly gift from Neville's grandmother. She was sick of his cruelty, sick of his choices, and mostly sick of his harassment.
"Potter needing help from his girlfriend! If you want it come get it!" Malfoy kicked off from the ground and steadily rose higher on his broom. He swiftly ducked under trees and rose to the towers above the field.
"Harry don't." Aurora grabbed his arm. He had already begun to straddle his broom and prepare to fly.
"I have to get it back."
"Well if I can't stop you, I'm not letting you do it alone." Aurora straddled her broom as well and quickly rose to come face to face with Draco. Harry followed.
"No Brickheads to help you now, huh Malfoy?" Aurora taunted. He looked more nervous as she and Harry chased him, coming at him offensively.
Pausing for a moment he looked at her, "Aurora you need to get down right now." She only glared back at him.
"Who do you think you are to order me around? You're breaking the same rules that I am."
He stared harshly at her. Aurora felt if she was any less braver, she would melt under the heat of his eyes. In a sense she knew he was right. She was breaking a rule, but she would be damned to let Malfoy best her anymore. She was angry, and rightfully so in her opinion.
"Fine you want it. Catch." Draco chucked the Remembrall to the ground.
"Harry!" She screamed as he dove to catch it. He was getting closer and closer to the ground. It was just a ball, he should let it drop. Aurora panicked more. He was just feet away. She wanted to go after him, but Malfoy gripped her broom handle.
"Stop, let him go." He tried to reason with her. Aurora could barely hear his voice though. She was far more concerned by Harry's possible impending doom.
However, Harry was not doomed. He had caught the Remembrall. Shaking, Aurora slowly descended her broom, Draco followed, but at a different angle to put some space between them.
Landing on the ground and dropping her broom, she threw herself into his arms.
"You absolute idiot you could have killed yourself!" Harry only smiled, while showing her the perfectly intact ball.
Suddenly, that authoritative voice she knew so well shrieked, "Harry Potter!" It was McGonagall. She marched over to the group on the field. Aurora prepared herself to be expelled. A few measly weeks at Hogwarts would all she, Malfoy, and Harry would have to her name. She shuddered to think what her father would do to her once he discovered not only had she failed to complete her mission with Draco, but in the process got kicked out of school.
"Never in my years at Hogwarts.." She went on. Aurora tuned her out. She was just waiting for the magical words announcing she would have to leave. But they never came.
After finishing her lecture, McGonagall grabbed Harry and pulled him after her leaving the rest of the class on the field. She had not seen her or Draco on their brooms as well. Part of Aurora could not help but feel a sense of relief. She would not be sent home. But her fears of what would happen to her quickly evaporated and were overcome with what would happen to Harry.
Aurora trudged through the rest of her day anxiously. She took notes in Potions, slept through a History of Magic, and handled plants in Herbology, but nothing could curb the tightly woven knot in her stomach. The only consolation was that Draco did not talk to her or look at her since this morning. That was a good decision on his part, Aurora didn't trust herself at the moment to interact with him civilly.
Finally it was dinner and to her relief, Harry was already seated at the Gryffindor table, talking to an elated Ron. She ran to him.
"Thank God you're okay, I was so worried you were already expelled."
"No. You can't tell anyone, but McGonagall wants me on the Quidditch team."
"You're kidding!" Aurora couldn't believe it. He must be the youngest player in over a century at the school. First years typically weren't even allowed to tryout. Just wait until Malfoy hears about this. Aurora smirked at the expression he would have on his face. Oh it would be glorious.
"Congrats Potter!" The Weasley twins said as they came up to the three. "Wood told us all about it, we're going to win this year." Aurora suddenly remembered, the twins were also on the team.
After the twins had walked away the three began to eat. Aurora was happy. Besides the rough morning and afternoon, today had turned out okay. She had her friends, Malfoy would seemingly be leaving her alone for now, and right now, she felt invincible.
Aurora's bliss would be short lived however, as Draco and the Brickbuddies sauntered up to her table. She inwardly groaned. She might just kill Draco if he doesn't leave her alone for just one day.
"Having a last meal Potter?" Draco snickered. His Brickbuddies snickered with him as well. They exchanged looks in amusement. Aurora failed to understand what was so funny.
"I-" She began.
"Pipe down this isn't about you, Princess." Aurora's face flushed a deep red. It was one thing to harass her and embarrass her in private, but to disrespect her so blatantly in public. She was fuming.
"Don't speak to her that way," Ron spoke in a dangerously low tone. The type of tone one might use when trying to conceal their fiery rage with a thin layer of calm. Draco didn't acknowledge him. He had only come for Potter.
"You're a lot braver with Crabbe and Goyle next to you." Aurora was impressed by how calmly he spoke. Perhaps he was still on the high of finding out he would not only be staying at Hogwarts, but would be playing on the Quidditch team.
"I'd take you any day on my own." This was false. Draco doesn't fight. The same way Aurora had been brought up to be a young lady, Malfoy had been brought up to be a gentleman. He had never been in a physical fight in his life, and she doubted he ever would.
"Tonight. Wizards' Duel. Wands only." Aurora almost snorted. This would be fair and even somewhat predictable of Malfoy if they really knew any defensive spells. Though they did have a class dedicated to defense against the dark arts, currently is was mostly just notes. Their instructor, Professor Quirrell, was a rather odd man. He was ironically timid, and wanted very little to do with the actual defense part of the course.
"Fine. Tonight. Midnight. Trophy room." Ron added.
"Your second?" Draco asked.
"Me," Aurora said. Draco glared at her. It was supposedly a warning to back off, but frankly she was still tired of his crap and wanted to stick it to him no matter how stupid this little duel will be.
Harry looked at Draco. "You heard her."
"And yours?" Ron questioned.
Draco looked between his two friends at his side. Neither were particularly intelligent or in the best shape to be in a duel. After a few moments of him trying to decide who out of the two would be the best second.
"Crabbe."
"Then it's settled. Tonight." Harry turned to finish his meal. He still looked smug.
After dinner the three gathered in the common room. Aurora spent her time writing an essay for Transfiguration that would be due tomorrow. She would have had enough time in class yesterday had she not been distracted by Draco seated behind her pulling her hair, kicking the back of her seat, or throwing bits of paper into her hair. Lavender who sat next to her that day, told her to ignore him and that he was only flirting. This only made Aurora more irritated. Enough of the boys will be boys excuses. He was nothing more than a prick.
As she wrote her paper, she listened to Ron explain the rules of dueling. Harry seemed a lot less confident away from Malfoy, which Ron attempted to quell. It wasn't like they could inflict any actual damage on each other. The most that will happen is they will shoot sparks at each other before arguing over who won. Aurora found the whole thing boring really, but her urge to piss Malfoy off was stronger than her restraint to be mature or responsible.
As the night continued on, the three decided to wait in their rooms to make their absence less suspicious. Aurora tossed and turned in her bed. She had been hoping to get a short nap in, but was distracted by the empty bed next to her. Hermione had never come to bed. She had seen her disappear at one point to shower, but then left the bedroom for the common room. She had not been back since. It was too late for her to focus on Hermione though. It was half past eleven and she needed to meet Harry and Ron.
Trotting down the stares, to her dismay, she discovered Harry and Ron already in the common room arguing with none other than Hermione.
"You're going to lose all the house points I earned today from McGonagall!" Aurora cringed at her voice. She was beginning to understand the frustration Ron felt from her. This was going to be a problem if she interfered with them leaving.
"Go away!" Ron snapped back. He had at it with Hermione Granger. She would not spoil anything else for them with her stick on the mud attitude.
Ron, Harry, and Aurora all proceeded to walk out of the portrait hole, Hermione following after them. She pleaded with them to come back in before eventually giving up.
"Fine. But don't blame me when you get kicked out of Hogwarts. I tried to stop you." Hermione turned to face the portrait hole, but to her horror, the fat lady was gone. She would not be able to return to her dorm.
"Oh no. How am I supposed to get back now!"
"Not our problem . Come on Rory, Harry." The three began to stalk off. Aurora was itching to fight Malfoy, even if it wasn't exactly the kind if fight she was looking for.
"I'm coming with you!" Hermione skipped to catch up to the group.
The three exchanged irritated looks. It was already risky traveling the castle past curfew in a group of three, a mouthy Hermione would not make their predicament any easier.
"No you're not," Harry said harshly. Granger would still not take a hint.
"Perhaps if we got caught I can explain I tried to stop you. Yes that should work quite nicely," she said to no one in particular.
"It's 11:45 guys," Aurora said checking her watch. She had made sure to wear one just for this occasion.
"Malfoy's going to think we chickened out, come on we need to hurry," Ron replied, leading the three to where they agreed to meet, the trophy room. The trio pushed through multiple corridors, Hermione close to their tails. They had made vain attempts to ditch her, but she remained firmly at their sides.
Pottering around the room while they waited for Malfoy to show, Aurora looked at the various cases containing different achievements from the four houses. She noticed one of particular interest.
"Harry, this one says J. Potter," Aurora said. She pushed her finger into the the glass of the display.
"That's my father, James," Harry said somewhat excitedly. He had to be sure to keep his voice down. He did not want Filch or his horrid cat, Mrs. Norris to discover them out of bed. The other three gathered around Aurora and gazed into the glass where she had been pointing.
"Says he was a chaser. And bloody hell! Won the Quidditch cup three years!" Ron was being a little too loud. Aurora nudged him the side. He gave her a nasty look, but she only returned it and pressed a firm finger to her lips.
"Look this one says Lily Evans and James Potter Head Boy and Girl for class of 78'," Hermione said. Pushing her way into the conversation. Harry was too starstruck to care.
Checking her watch again, Aurora was left perplexed. It was 12:05 now. Where was Malfoy though? Perhaps he was just running a little late, that seemed reasonable. Or maybe he was scared. The latter option amused Aurora much more. She smirked at the thought of how she would torment him after being too afraid to show his face.
"Malfoy is late."
"Rory, what time is it?" Harry called over his shoulder. His vision was still fixed on the trophies before him.
"Five past midnight. Bet he was too scared."
Harry, Ron, and Aurora were about to continue dragging Draco, when suddenly they heard a voice. Hermione immediately went stiff, this was probably her worst nightmare, breaking a rule and then getting caught.
"Smell something Mrs. Norris? Yes. Kids out of bed."
Filch.
He continued to mumble encouraging phrases to his cat. Aurora felt her blood went cold. She refused to be caught doing something wrong once again.
"Run," Harry said and led the group out of the trophy room. They sprinted around several hallways, Hermione lecturing them and herself along the way.
"For the love of God woman, would you please shut up." Hermione scowled at Ron's remark.
As they kept running, they eventually found safety in one of the Charm's classrooms. Here they would be safe. Or not. It wasn't long before Peeve's discovered them.
"Little children out of bed!" He shrieked loudly. The group pled for his silence, but the obnoxious poltergeist did nothing of the sort. Aurora rubbed her hands together and pulled at her fingers as Hermione, Harry, and Ron attempted to persuade him to quiet down. They even threatened him with the Bloody Baron, the Slytherin ghost and the one being Peeves respected in the house, but this only seemed to encourage him more. Filch continued to get closer and their attempts to quell Peeves were to no avail. They would have to keep moving.
Running blindly out of the classroom and into several more hallways, Aurora realized that she had become separated from the other three. Just great, she thought. It was much easier to be brave with The Boy Who Lived by her side, and the cushion with the knowledge that the punishment of her getting caught would be far lighter if she was in a group rather than if she was alone. As she snuck around closely to the walls of the castle, a hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.
"Let go of me!" She demanded harshly to the unknown figure. It only ignored her and dragged her into the closest classroom. Under the moonlight of the room, his pale hair was revealed and therefore his secret identity.
"Draco?" He nodded.
"I could kill you right now! Setting us up to get caught. You have some nerve Malf-"
"Shh. I can't save you if you won't shut up."
"How dare-"
"You're not very good at listening are you?" Draco asked, he strutted closer to her.
"Watch it Malfoy, I don't want you near me."
"You're quite feisty when you're angry."
"I am going to hurt you, Malfoy. Go away."
He smirked. "Well, I'm going to use my favor now anyways so you can quit being angry with me."
Aurora perked up slightly. She could finally get it over with. He's been taunting this fair over her for weeks.
"What do you want?"
"Kiss me."
"Ew Malfoy no!"
"Not on the lips, just here." He pointed to his cheek.
"I'm not playing your games. Leave me alone."
"Just a kiss right here then you're done."
"Just one kiss. Then you'll leave me alone."
"Well I could say that, but once you kiss me you might be obsessed with me."
"How do you do it?"
"What?"
"Manage to get more annoying by the second?" Draco rolled his eyes.
"Pucker up Greengrass." She glared at him, but forced her way closer to him. She had to mentally coach herself to do it. One kiss and that's it, she tried to remind herself. She was convinced he was violating some sort of school policy at this point, but she chose to ignore it. Just this one thing, then she hopefully would never have to talk to him again. At school at least, home was out of her control.
"Take your time would you," Draco said bored. He rolled his eyes again. He did that too much, she thought. It was actually pretty annoying.
She remained silent at his catty line and pursed her lips. She leaned in closer to him. She was less than a millimeter from his cheek, when he swiftly turned his head. She had kissed him squarely on the lips.
She pulled away quickly. "You disgusting little prick!" Aurora continued to scream a list of profanities at him but he only laughed and laughed. He threw his head back in this ugly laughter.
Aurora started to tear up a little, but she held it in as much as possible. She would not let him see her cry. She had already been humiliated, he would have a filed day with her tears. He took no notice of her expression though, as she made her way to exit the classroom.
But before fully exiting she stopped at the door frame, hand on the door handle. "I'm glad you find sexual assaulting me so funny Draco. I always knew you were a jerk, the harassment, the bullying, the humiliation. But I never pegged you as the type of guy who would touch a girl the way you touch me. Guess I was wrong. Don't know why I should be even remotely surprised."
Draco froze. He seemed mildly horrified for a moment about what he had just done. He had been awful and he knew it. He had violated someone in ways far beyond words. He regained some composure, but said nothing. He looked at Aurora's teary violet eyes with his steely ones. He looked as if he was going to say something, but nothing came out.
Aurora walked out of the classroom and tiptoed her way to the Gryffindor dorms. She hardly listened to the fat lady lecturing her about being out after hours and trudged her way to her room. She collapsed into her bed and sobbed. She hated the way Draco made her feel. So humiliated, so small. She wanted nothing more than to disappear, but instead she succumbed to her sleep.
