Sasuke didn't say a word on their return home. That didn't stop Naruto from asking a million questions. Sakura had a harder time ignoring Naruto than Sasuke did. It didn't help that Kakashi remained silent as well but he kept staring at her waiting for her to crack. She felt close to doing that several times, but she remained steadfast in her course until they had almost reached home.
They were twenty minutes from the Village gates when Kakashi reached out and laid a hand on her arm. She stopped automatically and turned to look at him. There was a request in his gaze and Sakura couldn't take another step forward. Naruto and Sasuke didn't immediately notice them pause, but when they did notice they turned back.
"I need to speak to Sakura alone." Kakashi's simple words were lost on Sasuke who just shook his head.
"No, you don't." Sakura reached out and laid a hand on Sasuke because his tone was a hair's short of being overly aggressive. Sasuke's eyes flitted over to her and caught her anxious expression. He softened minutely, but turned back to Kakashi. "Sakura is the future Matriarch of the Uchiha Clan. You'd do well to remember it." A part of Sakura felt like that was a reminder to her as well and she frowned at it. She knew well who she was. She didn't need Sasuke to emphasize that point.
Naruto scowled. "Guys. We aren't each other's enemy. Why are we fighting?"
Sakura sighed. "You know as well as I do Naruto that fighting is like breathing with us."
Naruto shook his head. "Not always—and even if it is we don't have to be that way. We know how to work together. I think we just proved that." Sakura thought about their battle with Madara and conceded the point. It was the easiest battle, they had ever fought together and given who their opponent was it was surprising. "Whatever you take me for, I'm not stupid. I know you and Sasuke and hiding something. Kakashi-sensei knows it too and he probably just wants to know what's going on. We're a family and we stick together, we have each other's back." Sakura couldn't deny Naruto's words because they resonated in her soul. Helplessly, she looked at Sasuke whose jaw was clenched tightly. "Whatever you're hiding you might as well tell us because we're just going to find out anyway. Just like Sakura found out about…" His words trailed off and tell all knew he meant Danzo. They were entirely too close to the village to let it slip out what they had done because it didn't matter if only one or two of them had done it. They all knew about it and kept quiet.
They were in it together.
It was that basis that Sakura made a decision. "You're right. We're hiding something from the two of you." Sasuke narrowed his eyes at her but Sakura remained unconcerned. "We didn't just go after Madara for no reason. He's the only person besides Sasuke who can split the worlds again. He had to die."
Kakashi sighed and ran a hand over his face. "We're corrupt." Sakura didn't deny that fact. "We've made ourselves judge, jury, and executioner. If we continue in this way we'll be no better than the old council and the Third." Kakashi gave Sasuke a hard look. "And we know how that turned out."
Sakura shifted drawing Kakashi's attention back to her where she wanted it. "Some would say he was a missing-nin and that he got what was coming to him." Naruto inhaled sharply. "Do you think we should stop?" Sakura questioned wanting to hear Kakashi's answer.
"What are you two planning?" Naruto demanded.
"Sakura—"Sasuke began. Sakura heard Sasuke silently screaming 'shut up.'
"To put the world back the way it was."
Sasuke cursed and moved closer to Sakura grabbing her hand and pulling her close to him. Sakura let him but she wouldn't let him move her any further from their teammates. Whether he realized it or not Naruto and Kakashi needed to know what they were up to and she needed to know their thoughts on the matter.
"Why?" Kakashi asked and Sakura thought about ignoring Sasuke's grip that tightened. Instead, she said to the Uchiha. "You trusted me before. Why not them too?" Sasuke took a deep breath and then released her mumbling an apology. Sakura reached out and squeezed his shoulder gently before turning back to Naruto and Kakashi.
"You answered that question already, Kakashi. Because we're corrupt but we're also selfish. We have things that we want and there's only one way to have them."
"This is wrong," Naruto stated and Sakura smiled and shrugged slightly.
"It is, but we're going to do it anyway. So there's only one question that remains. Are you two with us or against us?"
Sakura didn't know what she expected either of them to say. She didn't expect Kakashi to turn his back on her and walk toward the village. Sasuke looked at her sharply and she knew if they were going to do this then it had to be now before Kakashi decided he wanted to report them before anyone had the chance to stop them. Still, she turned and looked at Naruto.
"I won't stop you," Naruto said looking down at the ground. "But I can't help you either."
Sakura couldn't stop herself from stepping forward and wrapping her around Naruto and holding him tightly.
"I'm sorry I'm not a better person."
Naruto's lips quirked into a small smile. "Me too." He pulled away from her and scratched the back of his head.
"You sure about this, Sasuke?"
Sakura felt the weight of Sasuke's gaze on her as he said, "Yes."
Naruto nodded before leaving to catch up with Kakashi. Sakura let out a breath that she didn't know she was holding before she turned to Sasuke.
"Why did you tell them?"
"Because they deserved to know." And if they tried to stop her then she would have let them but she wasn't about to tell Sasuke that.
Sasuke slightly inclined his head before he held out his hand to her. "Let's go." Sakura clasped Sasuke's hand and they disappeared in a swirl of leaves.
