Mary met Leonard in front of Harry's Cafeteria at noon. They had a nice luncheon together, and he behaved himself.

As they left, they walked by a shoe store.

"This is where I bought your shoes from. Want to trade them now?"

"Sure, Leonard."

They walked in. Mary had brought the shoes with her, still in the box.

"Hello, may I help you?" asked the clerk.

"Hi. I bought a pair of shoes for a lady, a few days ago."

"Oh, yes, I remember."

"This is the lady—Mary Richards."

"Pleased to meet you."

"My pleasure," she said.

"They don't fit her, so we thought we'd trade them in for her correct size. The sales slip should be in the box."

She gave him the box. Looking inside, the clerk pulled out the slip and looked at it.

He nodded. "Yes, that's fine. Do you know your shoe size, Miss Richards?"

"I think it's 7 ½, but I'm not quite sure.

"Let's measure your feet. Sit down, please."

They sat together. She took her shoes off, and he measured her left foot.

"7 ½, you're right. And these shoes are 7. I'm sure we have them in the other size. I'll be right back."

"Thanks," said Leonard. "So, how am I doing, so far?'

"Leonard, I must say I'm very proud of you!"

"Thanks, Miss Richard."

"Call me Mary."

"Mary…wow!"

The clerk came back with a box. "Here we go."

He gave it to Mary. She opened it and tried on the shoes. "Much better. I'd like to trade them."

"Certainly. And since you have the slip, there's nothing more that needs to be done."

"Great!" said Leonard.

"Would you like to wear these shoes?"

"No, I'll just wear the ones I was wearing," said Mary.

"Very good."

She took them off and put them in the box. Then she put her regular shoes back on.

"Will there be anything else, today?"

"No, thank you. Thanks for your help."

"That's what I'm here for."

They got up and left the store.

Along the way to the car, they walked by a fountain—the same one Leonard had pushed Mary into! An object was floating in the water—a shoe.

"Hey, Mary, look at this!"

Suddenly, he got into the water! He waded to where the shoe was floating and picked it up. He brought it out and showed it to her.

"Mary, is this your other shoe?"

"Yes, it is. But it doesn't matter because I already threw the first one out."

"Oh."

"And you walked into the water with your shoes on!"

"Oh, yeah! Have I blown it with you, Mary?"

"No, Leonard, you haven't. I'd still like to go to dinner with you sometime."

He smiled. "Oh, that's wonderful! Next week, maybe?"

"Sure. Call me later."

"I will."

He took his shoes and socks off and dried his feet. After a few minutes he put them back on, and they walked back to the car. Along the way, he threw the shoe in a trash can.

"I'll call you sometime next week."

"Sure, Lenny."

He smiled. "You called me Lenny!"

She also smiled. "Yes, I did!"

"Mary, you're the nicest, classiest lady I've ever gone out with!"

"Thanks, Lenny!"

He drove her back to her apartment. She let him kiss her on the cheek, but she didn't invite him inside with her.
