So here's the big chapter! I hope you enjoy! :)
Chapter 15
Lorelai woke up and glanced across at the other side of the bed to find it empty. She then glanced at the back of her bedroom door and smiled as she saw her wedding dress hanging there. She couldn't believe the day was finally here. Her wedding day. She slowly got up, pulled her dressing gown on and headed downstairs. She smiled when she heard laughter coming from the kitchen. She stood in the hallway for a bit listening to Rory and April chatting excitedly about the day and laughing together. She was so happy that they both clicked pretty much straight away. It was like they were always meant to be sisters. "Morning!" She smiled as she walked in.
"Morning mom!" Rory grinned. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I wish we could do this wedding now!" Lorelai joked.
"Well I'm sure Luke feels the same." Rory laughed.
"Oh he does!" April laughed. "He was here really early dropping off coffee and pancakes so I'm pretty sure he's in the apartment pacing around driving Jess crazy."
Lorelai smirked. "Poor Luke..."
"I'm just going to have a shower." April smiled.
"Ok hon." Lorelai smiled at her and watched her go. She glanced at Rory. "So you and April seem to be getting along well?"
"Yeah, she's cool." Rory nodded.
"I'm glad you're getting along." She smiled.
"So how are you feeling?"
"Excited." Lorelai admitted.
"I bet." Rory smiled.
Lorelai glanced at her daughter. "How about you? Are you ready to have Luke part of your family?" She said.
"Mom, Luke's always been part of the family." She said.
"I know but like...officially." Lorelai said. "It's still a big change..."
Rory smiled at her mom. "Mom, I love Luke. I can't wait to have him as my step-dad. Now come on, let's have breakfast and then we can get you ready for this thing."
"Ok." Lorelai grinned.
"You need to stop that." Jess said watching Luke pace round the apartment.
"I hate this! The bride can be distracted by getting ready all morning but what can the groom do? He showers, gets his tux on and then he's done!" Luke exclaimed.
Jess smirked. "You agreed on having a 1 o'clock wedding."
"Yeah and now I wish I hadn't!" He exclaimed.
"Ok chill!" Jess chuckled.
Luke groaned and collapsed onto the couch. "I'm sorry. I just..."
"You nervous?" He asked.
"Nervous? No! Well, maybe a bit. But it's a good nervous. I just want it to happen now. This was meant to happen a long time ago." Luke admitted.
"I know." Jess said. "Just...try and think of something else. Distract yourself."
"How?"
Jess glanced round and found a pack of cards. He went over and picked them up. "How about a game? What do you say?" He said.
Luke glanced up at him and gave him a small smile. "Yeah ok." He said.
Jess nodded and started dealing the cards out.
"Hey?" Luke said. "Thanks."
Jess nodded and continued dealing.
At 1 o'clock, Jess was stood with Luke in the square. "They're on their way." Jess told him, having received a text from Rory.
"Ok." Luke nodded, taking a deep breath.
"You're so going to cry." Jess smirked.
"Back atcha." Luke growled.
"It's not my wedding day." He chuckled.
"Oh yeah, but Rory's going to be walking down that aisle in her dress." He smirked. "You're going to cry too."
"Nah, I'm just going to count my lucky stars she chose me again." Jess said.
Luke glanced at him and smiled. Suddenly, a horse and carriage was heard coming down the street. "Show time." He said patting Jess on the arm. They went and stood at the front, Luke facing the front.
Rory turned to Lorelai in the carriage. "You ready mom?"
"So ready!" Lorelai grinned.
"Ok, well I'll see you at the front." Rory smiled, giving her a kiss. "I love you, mom."
"I love you too, kid." Lorelai smiled. She watched Rory go to get ready to walk down the aisle. She then turned to her mother. "I know this isn't exactly what you had planned for my wedding but..."
"This is you." Emily smiled. "I know. And I'm just honoured to be here, Lorelai. And...your father would have been so proud of you."
Lorelai blinked back tears. "Thanks, mom." She said tremulously.
They heard the music start, signalling the start. "Are you ready?" Emily asked.
Lorelai nodded and smiled. "I'm ready."
"Then let's get you married." Emily smiled softly, holding out her hand. Lorelai smiled and took it.
Luke and Jess turned round as the music started and Luke smiled as he saw April and Sookie walking down the aisle towards them. Sookie gave him a big grin and April gave him a thumbs up. He then watched as Rory started walking towards them. He smiled as the girl he knew since she was 10 was about to become his step daughter. She gave him a grin before joining Sookie and April at the front. Luke glanced at Jess who couldn't take his eyes off Rory. The main music then started and he glanced back down the aisle and his breath hitched as he saw Lorelai stood at the end. He couldn't take his eyes off her as she started walking towards him. He felt tears well up in his eyes.
"Told you you'd cry." He heard Jess say next to him.
"Why don't you keep staring at your girlfriend?" Luke retorted but smirked.
Lorelai reached the front of the aisle. She tore her gaze away from her soon to be husband for a moment to hug her mother. "Thanks, mom." She said softly.
"Congratulations, Lorelai." Emily smiled tremulously.
Lorelai smiled at her before joining Luke at the front. "Hey..."
"Hey..." He said. "You look...beautiful."
"Why thank you, flattery will get you anywhere." Lorelai grinned. "You look good too."
"Good how?" Luke smirked but grinned as Lorelai laughed.
"Ok, ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to celebrate the matrimony of Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes..." Reverend Skinner said.
"About damn time!" Babette called out causing everyone to laugh.
"Well, I can't deny that." Lorelai smirked causing Luke to chuckle.
"I hear that you two have both written your own vows?" Reverend Skinner said. "Luke, would you like to go first?"
Luke took a deep breath and nodded. He looked at Lorelai. "Lorelai...I think everyone would say that I was turning into a hermit before I met you..." He said, getting some murmurs of agreements from everyone. "I was grumpy, I wouldn't talk to anyone, I...well, I was a mess..." He admitted. "But then this woman came bursting into my diner demanding coffee. And...everything changed." He said. He glanced at Lorelai who had tears in her eyes. "We've been through a lot but we were always meant to get here. Us standing here. It was always you, Lorelai. You were always the one for me and I can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together." He said. "You made me want to live again. You made my life worthwhile again. I love you so much." He said, his voice cracking. He glanced at Reverend Skinner and nodded.
"Thank you, Luke." He smiled. "Lorelai?" He prompted.
Lorelai took a breath. "Well, wow...man of very few words sure does know how to make his vows..." She joked. She took a deep breath and smiled tremulously at the man infront of him. "Luke, it was always meant to be you. I know we've been through a lot but it was always meant to be you. From the day I met you, I knew you were going to be someone special to me and you proved that by being my constant through the years, my...best friend..." She said. "And you never judged me once. You treated me the same even when you found out about Rory and then you treated her like she was your own. You looked out for her and you two formed your own special bond. And I will always love that about you. How much you love Rory means so much to me. I've always wanted to find that guy who would give me the whole package and who would treat me and Rory as a package deal. And that was you. That was always you. Even though it took me a while to realise that..." She admitted and smiled slightly as everyone murmured their agreement. Lorelai looked back at Luke and fought back tears. "Luke, I love you so much and I can't wait to be married to you and finally start our future together." She said. She glanced at Reverend Skinner. "So let's get this thing done!" She joked.
Reverend Skinner chuckled. "Ok, by the power vested in me by the state of Conneticutt, I now pronounce you husband and wife..." He smiled. "You may now kiss the bride."
"Try and stop me." Luke said before pulling Lorelai towards her and kissing her passionately, causing everyone to get up and cheer.
"Hello husband." Lorelai grinned.
"Hello wife." Luke grinned.
Everyone was sat down enjoying the wedding meal when the glasses started clinging and Emily stood up. "Now I know the tradition is that the father of the bride makes the speech but sadly, that can't happen today..." She said giving Lorelai a small smile. "So you'll have to make do with me." She joked. "For those who don't know me, I'm Emily Gilmore. I'm Lorelai's mother. Now she has probably been the first to tell you all that I wasn't exactly Luke's biggest fan when they first got together. But over the years, I've seen how Luke treats my daughter and cares about my granddaughter. And I realise now, there was only ever one man who deserved my daughter and that is Luke. Luke, thank you for always being there for my daughter and...welcome to the family." She said giving Luke a smile.
"Thank you." Luke smiled softly at her.
"Now I'm going to hand over to my granddaughter." Emily smiled handing the microphone to Rory.
"Hi everyone! Now, I'm not going to talk about my mom because she knows what she means to me and I told myself I wasn't going to cry today." She joked. "So, I thought I'd focus on Luke." She said grinning over at her step-dad. "Luke, it's been a long time coming but you guys finally did it!" She grinned. "And I couldn't be happier that you're officially joining the family. I know your official title is step-dad but I hope you know you mean a lot more than just that to me. I know you're not biologically my dad and that place is already taken but...I don't see the problem of having two dads." She shrugged. She smiled at Luke who was fighting back tears. "Luke, you've always been there for my mom and for me even when you had no obligation to. I still remember when you came to my caterpillar's funeral. Yes I am going to embarrass you!" She grinned as Luke went red. "This man had only known us for a few months but when my mom told him that I was having a funeral for my beloved caterpillar, he dropped everything and came to it. He brought brownies and even made a small wooden coffin for it. It was so sweet." She said. She glanced over at him. "Everyone's been asking me how I feel about you becoming part of the family but I just tell them that you've been part of the family for so long now anyway. It's not actually any different. Except now it's official." She smiled. "Mom, I love you and congratulations. You picked the right one this time." She smirked. "To mom and Luke!" She held up her glass.
"To Lorelai and Luke!" Everyone chorused.
Rory walked back over to them and hugged her mom. She then smiled at Luke. "You had to know that I was going to embarrass you a little right?" She smirked.
"Oh I wouldn't have expected anything else." Luke chuckled. He held out his arms and Rory gave him a hug. "I love you kid." He said.
"I love you too, you big softy." She smirked. She then handed the microphone over to Jess. "Your turn."
Jess stood up. "I'm going to keep this brief as I'm sure you all want to get on with the party." He said. "I was sent here six years ago to live with Luke and I know I quickly made myself enemy number one in this town. But Luke never gave up on me no matter what I did. I didn't always appreciate it but I do now." He said. He looked over at Luke. "I appreciate everything you did for me and I'm happy for you." He said sincerely. He glanced at Lorelai. "Both of you." He said. "To Luke and Lorelai." He said holding up his glass.
"Lorelai and Luke!" Everyone chorused.
"Ok, well, the time is here for the bride and groom's first dance!" Lane announced over the speaker system. "So would the bride and groom please take to the dancefloor?" She smiled as her and Hep Alien started playing Reflecting Light.
Lorelai grinned at Luke. "You got them to do this song, didn't you?"
"Well, it was our first unofficial date. I thought it would be appropriate." He smiled. "Was it the right choice?"
"Definitely the right choice." She smiled taking his hand and starting to dance with him. "I love you."
"I love you too." He smiled.
