Chapter 16: Last Resort
As the two watched the destruction, two mobile suits emerged from the ocean, the Duel Gundam and the Buster Gundam. Like Ren, they too had a look of shock and disbelief.
"Nora...", Sun gasped as the Buster landed on the ground, followed by the Duel. "That's impossible...", Neptune muttered.
"It wouldn't be if you two didn't go down like jobbers", Yang sassed to which Ruby elbowed her in the arm.
Ren and Jaune still looked in shock where the flames began to disperse, and it only revealed the burned remains on what was once a mobile suit. Ren's face of shock was replace to that of pure rage, and that is when his squadmates began their attack.
"Damn you, Strike!", Neptune shouted at the white mobile suit.
"Ren!", Sun called out as joined the Duel in assaulting the Strike.
Ren clenched his fist at seeing his best friend's death even in an alternate universe. Ever since the destruction Kuroyuri, she was the only one left he came to consider his family until the formation of Team JNPR. And he could not imagine, of all people, that she would be killed at the hands of Jaune Arc, his best friend and leader, even if it was accidental.
Jaune regained his focus as he shielded himself from the blasts before getting to the high ground, where the Archangel loomed in to provide supporting fire.
"Ensign Arc! What's taking you so long?", Raven Branwen contacted him via communicator where its CIWS rained down fire which forced the two attacking mobile suits to back away.
"Fall back!", she ordered. "There's no reason to pursue them any further!"
Jaune hesitated to do so, but he complied and went back to the Alliance warship.
"You're not getting away!", Neptune yelled as he continued to fire but were once again struck by a hail of gunfire from the warship.
"Stop it, Neptune!", Sun told his teammate. "Right now, we need to stay back!"
The Duel and the Buster began to fall back where the cream-colored machine returned fire before he landed next to the still standing from of the Aegis.
"Ren!", Sun called out his squad leader, who was still recovering from his apparent shock from what had transpired. He and his two remaining squad mates retreated into the ocean to head back to the sub.
"This was practically one of my few roles as of now, and I got killed?", Nora deadpanned before she glanced at Ren, who was still trembling at the sigh of her suffering a fiery death at the hands of his leader.
"Don't worry, Renny.", She assured him while she grasped his hand. "I'm still here though."
Ren could only give a small smile and a nod at what she had said. Still, it was a rather shocking experience to see her die at this one.
The Strike landed at the Archangel where Jaune panted for air in a rapid pace due to the exceeding pressure given.
"We're leaving the combat area! Maximum propulsion!", Winter ordered. The Archangel left the island, where the remains of the Blitz remained visible. Jaune glanced at the wreckage one last time, his emotion showing regret when memories of him striking down the black machine came towards him once more.
Later, aboard the Archangel, Jaune rapelled down from his machine where he was greeted and congratulated by Ilia and the rest of the Archangel's mechanic crew but Jaune told them to stop. Qrow walked towards them and asked them to give him some time.
"The guy should be proud of himself but why does it look like he didn't want the praise or any of that?", Roman questioned at Jaune's alternate self's behaviour.
"If I'm guessing, he became a soldier against his will?", Cinder suggested.
"Apparently no", Aeralyn stepped in. "Jaune here is a pacifist at heart, hating war as a whole. The reason why Jaune fought for the Alliance was to protect his friends, after their home colony of Heliopolis was destroyed by a ZAFT raid", she exclaimed.
"People like him don't deserve to be in war", Glynda exclaimed.
"But it is his duty to protect his friends that forced him to become a soldier. But I agree with you, people like him shouldn't be at war", Ironwood said to her.
Jaune on the other hand, would not hesitate to become a soldier if it means to protect his family and friends if necessary.
"Okay, that's enough!", Ilia ordered her fellow mechanics. "We remain vigilant, so double time!", she ordered them.
In the hallway, Qrow managed to catch up to Jaune, who was still trying to regain his composure. "They didn't mean to upset you", Qrow said to him but Jaune continued to walk past him. "We all consider you as one of us"
"I know", Jaune said in a calm tone but the commander was not convinced as he gripped the pilot's shoulder.
"Jaune", he sternly called out. "We are soldiers. We're not murderers, we're fighting a war!", Qrow exclaimed in frustration towards the young pilot.
"If one doesn't shoot, the other gets shot. That goes for me, for you, for all of us!"
"For once, you give good words for soldiers to live by", Raven told her twin brother, who merely took a drink from his flask.
"I know!", Jaune snapped towards the older pilot.
"Then stop hesitating!", Qrow told him, in an attempt to have him regain his senses. "You'll end up losing your life!"
"He's not wrong", Cinder complimented.
Jaune could only glare at him for that. Meanwhile, back at the ZAFT submarine, Ren and Sun had just finished putting on their uniforms but Neptune, who was still in his pilot suit, was still angered at what had happened.
"Damn it!", Neptune cursed as he banged Nora's locker. "Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! DAMN IT!", he continued to do so until her locker opened and revealed her uniform.
"Neptune...", Sun muttered as he tried to calm down his best friend.
"Why did she have to die like that?", Neptune questioned before glaring at Ren. "And why out here? Well?"
Ren glared at Neptune before he had enough and slammed him against the locker.
"Bad move, man", Sun said to his partner.
"If it were you or any of our teammates, I don't see I couldn't", the blue haired teen told him.
"Why don't you just come out and say it, Neptune? It's my fault! She died because she was trying to save me!", Ren shouted to Neptune.
Nora was saddened to see Ren at this situation. Phyrra and Jaune wondered if Ren would feel the same way if Nora's fate was ever sealed.
Neptune gripped Ren's hand as tears began to flow from his eyes and that is when Sun came between them.
"Ren, stop it!", Sun said to Ren before turning to Neptune before he separated the two. "You too, Neptune. Fighting each other isn't going to help one bit. And remember that the Strike is our real enemy."
"I know that!", Neptune angrily replied. "Obviously! He's the one who killed Scarlet!".
A flashback is then seen where the Strike slashed down Scarlet David's GINN at Heliopolis where the pilot screamed in terror before he and his machine exploded.
Sun and Neptune winced at the sight of their teammate being killed by Jaune, considering him as one of their closest, if not moodiest, friends and members of their team.
"Well..that's gotta be an increase on the kid's head", Roman sarcastically remarked.
"And he gave me this scar.", Neptune added. "The next time we meet, I'll get him!", he declared before he ran off.
"Neptune!", Sun called out his friend before he ran after him.
"They were really close to her.", Winter said with a sympathetic tone.
"Every member in each squad is a sibling to another. A fellow squadmate is a family for life embedded to their memory", Ironwood sadly recalled, remembering several fallen brothers-in-arms whom he had forged close bonds with.
With the two gone, Ren went to her locker and grasped her uniform, but as he did, music notes fell out and memories began to flash on his mind.
"Oh Ren! Thanks for coming to the concert the other day.", Nora said to Ren as they floated along a hallway. She gave a smile, "Didn't I see you sleeping?"
"I guess I figured I should do my part and join the fight after hearing about Junius Seven.", she said to him as they watched the skies.
The students in Beacon shed tears on seeing Ren's memories, on how the ginger-haired girl was so close to the boy. The staff who knew them felt sorrow at what had happened to friends who met at the battlefield at different sides, with either one of them making a sacrifice to save the comrades they had.
Ren slammed his fist on the locker upon remembering those memories of her.
"Damn it.", Ren muttered as he cried on Nora's uniform. "It should have been me. I should have been the one to die, not her. Nora... it's all because I was too weak to defeat Jaune in the past. It was my weakness that killed you.", he tearfully spat to himself as he continued to weep but his eyes shifted from sorrow to rage, his vengeance taking over him.
"Oh no...", Nora said as she became horrified of the aspect on what was about to happen. "Please no...",
"I'll kill him... the next time we meet.", he declared.
"Kid's gonna be in a warpath...", Qrow lamented as he took a drink from his flask.
"In war, even the most light-hearted people can be molded into something they do not want to be", Ozpin lamented, not wanting to see his student going to that path.
The screen then shows aboard the ZAFT submarine, where the three remaining Mobile Suits of the Ren Team stand by where the alarms picked up where the three pilots held a stern expression of determination in avenging their fallen teammate. "Maintain trim. Twenty seconds to the ocean's surface. Anti-air defense. Stand by. Emit control online!", a CO of the sub announced. "We reached the surface"
The Submarine emerged from thr depths where Fox managed to get signal of it from the Archangel. "Sensors picked something up! A Vosgulov submarine carrier!", he announced as Raven huffed at the situation.
"I don't want anyone to fight this time.", Ruby muttered, not wanting to see Team JNPR practically fighting amongst themselves.
"It's the cruel truth of war, Ruby", Qrow exclaimed. "Civilian or not, it will always find a way to squeeze in"
The submarine's hatches opened where the Aegis, Buster, and the Duel emerged from it before they commandeer their respective Guuls before heading towards the Archangel.
The alarms sounded aboard the Archangel where Jaune and the rest of the Archangel's crew took notice of this. "All pilots, proceed to battle stations! All pilots proceed to battle stations!"
"Here we go again.", Roman exclaimed with excitement in his voice, having been impressed at the aspects of mobile suits fighting one another. Neo only nodded her head in agreement.
The students of Beacon on the other hand, weren't so thrilled about it.
The three ZAFT mobile suits appeared as the sun began to rise, where the Buster connected its rifles to form a larger, more powerful one. "Let's do it!", Sun shouted as the mobile suit fired on the Archangel.
"Three silhouettes approaching us from five'o clock! Distance 3000!", one of the crew members on the panels announced.
"Heat source approaching from the same direction!", another said from the left.
"Evade!" Winter ordered. "To port!". The Archangel managed to evade the Buster's shot as it collided with the ocean.
"Load Wombats into stern launching tubes!", Raven ordered. "Aim Valiants! Igelstellungs!
"Quite the surprise they set up, especially at sunrise", Cinder complimented.
"It reflects the saying, 'As stealthful as the night", Flit said before Aeralyn finished for him.
"And as deadly as the dawn", she finished as several were impressed by the choice of words, especially Mercury, who find it to be a fitting code for Assassins like him.
Said weapons were activated as they took aim at the mobile suits. "Are Commander Branwen and Ensign Arc ready for take off?", Raven asked Blake.
The Skygrasper, now equipped with the Strike's Launcher Striker Pack, then prepared for take off. "Damn! I should've known it wouldn't be smooth sailing along the way", he complained.
"Skygrasper One. Commander Branwen ready for take off! Strike proceed to the rear deck!", she announced to the two pilots.
Qrow sealed the visor of his helmet before he called out the young pilot. "Jaune?"
"Yes?", he asked.
"You're gonna be fine?"
"Yes", Jaune replied as the hatches opened to the Skygrasper. The Strike, using its Aile pack, landed on the ship's stern while Qrow took off.
"Let's just hope your words of wisdom worked on him Qrow", Taiyang said to his teammate.
The three ZAFT machines approached the Archangel from behind where the Buster kept firing on it. Ren gritted his teeth at it before Jaune aboard the Strike managed to get a fix on it.
Neptune lets out a growl of pure rage as the Duel fired on the Strike with its beam rifle while the Aegis loomed in. "Valiant's fire!" Raven ordered as they fired on the rear towards the mobile suits. The Duel managed to destroy the incoming missiles while the Strike open fired on the Aegis, who evaded its shots.
The Buster loomed in closer as he used both rifles to fire on the Archangel until he managed to land a shot.
"Today, I'm going to finish you off!", Qrow shouted as he fired the beam cannon towards the Buster who returned fire but its shots were evaded by the enemy aircraft.
The clouds then darkened as a storm began to loom in over them. Ren grunted as the Aegis fired on the Strike and that is when the white machine took the skies towards the Aegis.
Neptune lets out a growl as the Duel used its railgun and missile pods towards the Strike. The white machine managed to redirect the missiles into hitting each other before emerging from the smoke to fire on the Duel before the Aegis intervened.
"I hope that we don't go down like last time", Neptune exclaimed.
"I hope to too", Sun agreed with him.
"Helldarts, fire!", Raven ordered as missiles launched towards the Buster. "That's useless against me!", Sun mocked as thr Buster connected its beam rifles and destroyed them with a single blast.
"Gotcha!", Qrow declared as the Skygrasper loomed in to fire another shot which the cream mobile suit evaded. "Get real!", Sun mocked as the Buster launched a volley of missiles.
"Damn!", Qrow cursed as he descended to the ground, where the missiles collided on the ocean instead.
"Even for a measly aircraft, Qrow is putting up quite a fight against mobile suits", Ironwood complimented.
"He is known as the Hawk of Endymion at the universe, and one of the Alliance's top aces where he can take down mobile suits on his own while others took them five to defeat one", Flit exclaimed.
Meanwhile, the Archangel lay down to the defensive as its CIWs shot down most of the missiles sent against it. The Aegis loomed in where it destroyed two its machine guns and its Helldarts, causing great damage to the ship.
"Numbers 4 and 5 Igelstellungs have been bombed! Bulkheads to Helldart tubes have been sealed!", the crew announced.
"Their situation is dire", Summer muttered.
"He's likely taking the I hurt them, I hurt you sequence", Roman added.
"Any word from Atlas?", Winter asked one of the crew members. "Not yet, no response!", he replied.
"It would mean no backup", Ironwood grimly said.
"Aim Gottfrieds!", Raven ordered. "Make sure you hit it! Fire!"
The Archangel launched its beam cannons towards the Aegis but Ren merely shrugged as he evaded the shots. Meanwhile, the Strike and the Duel still fought where thr blue machine evaded the Strike's shots.
"I'll NEVER FORGIVE YOU!", Neptune shouted in rage as the Duel ignited one of its beam sabers where the Strike had done the same, where the two clashed with both of their shields parrying their beam sabers. "BASTARD!"
The Aegis on the other hand, continued its assault towards the Archangel where the red machine loomed in closer. "The Aegis is coming directly from above!", Yatsuhashi told Raven.
The Aegis switched to its MA form where it used its Scylla Energy Cannon on the ship. "Evade!", Winter ordered. "Right!"
But it strucked the left Valiant cannon where it exploded, causing Blake's console to conduct electricity and she backed away from it.
"Blake!", Ruby cried out in fear for her teammate.
"I'm okay, Ruby", she assured her. "Hopefully."
The Aegis switched back to its Mobile Suit form where it landed on its Guul once more where it watched the ship beginning to crash at a nearby island. "Plasma tumbler damaged! Levitator down!", a crew member announced. "Cannot maintain lift!", Fox seconded.
"Place priority on stabilization!", Winter ordered.
"Use emergency power! Connect backup levitator!", Raven seconded.
Adam stood up from his seat. "I'm taking off with the Skygrasper!", Adam declared.
"Adam?", Blake questioned him.
"We're in real danger unless we do something!", he said to them before he ran off to the hangar.
"Kid's got some balls, I give you that", Roman complimented.
"But I have feeling it won't end well for him", Yang suggested.
"Wait! Crewman Taurus!", Winter tried to call out until she braced as the Strike landed on the ship.
"Damn!", Jaune cursed as he took the skies once more where he engaged the Duel. He fired its beam rifle but the Duel jumped away from its Guul and loomed in closer to the Strike as Jaune gasped.
"Take this!", Neptune growled out as the Duel kicked the Strike on its shield, causing the Strike to briefly fall down as Jaune grunted and braced for impact.
The Strike regained control of its flight where Jaune found an opportunity where the Strike fired on the Duel's right leg.
"What?!", Neptune gasped before the portion exploded. "DAMN IT!", he cursed as he began to plummel into the ocean but as he did, the Duel fired its railgun where it managed to destroy the Strike's beam rifle in the process.
"Well, at least this was better unlike last time", Neptune said in relief, not wanting to be seen being handled like a chump again.
The Strike shielded itself from the explosion and that is when Jaune noticed the Aegis was looming in towards him. "JAUNE!", Ren shouted in a vengeful tone as he kept firing on Jaune where he used his Guul as a decoy before shooting it, causing the Strike to crash into the island.
Meanwhile, Adam and his Skygrasper took off once more from the Archangel to provide support for Kira. The Strike landed onto the island where the Aegis loomed in with its beam saber ignited. Ren lets out an angry growl towards his opponent. But the Strike managed to block its slash with its shield.
The Strike ignited one of its beam sabers where it engaged the Aegis in close combat. The Aegis tried to slash down the white machine but the latter evaded for a counter-attack but that too was dodged by the Aegis, who used its CIWs to fire on the Strike before the red machine ignited its beam sabers on its feet where it was parried by the Strike's shield.
"Among all things that could happen..", Weiss lamented.
"I would never imagine Ren and Jaune fighting one another", Ruby finished, thinking that such circumstance was impossible.
Meanwhile, the Archangel continued to crash, with smoke mostly coming from the rear side of the ship. Ilia and the rest of her mechanic team were doing what they can to douse the fires. The crew braced for impact as they crashed. And that is when the Buster loomed in.
"With the Strike fighting the Aegis, the ship is in sitting ducks, considering their skill in evading the ship's shots", Ozpin grimly said.
"This'll finish you!", Sun declared as the Buster prepared to fire.
"Not so easy!", Qrow snorted as the Skygrasper fired on him, with the green beam hitting the Buster's Guul.
"Damn!", Sun cursed as he got off from the exploding carrier. The Buster connected its rifles where it fired a powerful yellow beam towards the Skygrasper. The aircraft evaded the first shot before using its beam cannon, but not before the right wing was struck. At the same time, the shot severed the Buster's right arm.
The Skygrasper safely landed onto the ocean while the Buster crashed into a mountain where it tried to move, without avail. "Hydro gone? Driving pulse falling? Damn!", Sun cursed as he tried to move his machine, but not before noticing that the Archangel's Gottfried was aiming at him.
"Welp, guess I'll die", Sun sarcastically remarked.
"Come on, at least we put up a fight!", Neptune exclaimed to him.
Sun gritted his teeth in anger, and that it when the Buster's cockpit opened, where the pilot raised his hands in surrender. One of the Archangel's monitors saw the pilot's gesture where Winter gasped in surprise.
"He's surrendering?", Raven questioned as Sun glared at them.
"Better than being blown to bits, I guess.", Sun deadpanned.
Meanwhile, the Strike and the Aegis continued to fight amidst the storm where their own strikes continued to parry one another. "Jaune!", Ren growled in anger as the Alliance pilot has done the same.
The students who knew Ren never saw him give into his rage and would have to resort to harming the friends of his rivals. Same could be said to Jaune.
"How could you do it, Jaune?!", Ren screamed in rage as the Aegis and Strike backed away from one another. "YOU MURDERED NORA!"
"He didn't mean to, Ren! Just stop!", Phyrra pleaded at her teammate.
"It was just like in the sixth universe with Mr. Xiao-Long.", Ozpin suggested. "He had given to his rage"
Ren, on the other hand, couldn't bear to see himself fighting his leader who had become a brother to him overtime.
The Aegis switched to its MA mode where it fired its Scylla Energy Cannon, unleashing a deadly red beam towards the Strike but Jaune quickly dodged those shots.
"Jaune!",
Said pilot gasped before the Skygrasper loomed in support the Strike.
"This will not go well for him", Cinder assessed.
"Adam! Stay back!", Jaune shouted to his friend. The Skygrasper launched a rocket against the Aegis where the red machine jumped away. Ren scoffed at him where the Aegis threw its shield to the jet.
Adam gasped as the shield went closer, where it collided with the fighter, beheading Adam.
"ADAM!!", Jaune shouted as the jet exploded in mid-air.
Back at the Archangel, Adam and his unit were marked as signal lost, resulting in Blake gasping at this.
"That has gotta be the ultimate fuck off, I have ever seen", Mercury remarked at seeing Ren simply throwing his shield towards his opponent.
"I know!", Emerald agreed in disbelief. "He had no time for small fries in his hunt so he had to do it quickly as possible"
Blake winced at the sight of Adam being killed. Though she had accepted that he was far gone, his version in this universe didn't deserve a cruel death.
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind", Ironwood said.
"He had killed one of Mr. Arc's closests friend, which would only mean...", Glynda recounted before widening her eyes in horror.
"He will be like Mr. Ren as well", Ozpin said in a grim tone.
Jaune mourned his friend as a Blue Seed bounced then exploded in his subconcious. His focus on the battlefield returned, his eyes having changed, his pupils shrinked while his irises expanded.
"What was that?!", Ruby asked in a loud manner in surprise.
"That Ruby is called the Superior Evolutionary Element Destined-factor, or SEED, which increases the pilot's control over the course of the battle or are triggered by rage, compared to that of Berserkers, which practically used their anger and hate as their source of willpower", Flit explained.
"How did he managed to do this?", Summer questioned.
"It is triggered by two methods. One is the resolve to protect their allies or defeat their enemies which would trigger on its own. The second could be triggered at will if he or she has a particular resolve prior to activating it", he further explained.
"I take it was because of Mr. Arc's genetics?", Ironwood questioned.
"Not really. Both Coordinators and Naturals can get into this factor but in very rare cases", Flit finished.
"REN!", Jaune shouted in tears as he moved for an assault against his friend's murderer. The Aegis loomed in for a slash but was blocked by the Strike's shield, where the white machine retaliated by severing its left arm with its beam saber.
"That's gonna leave a mark.", Roman remarked.
The Strike then kicked the Aegis' head as it began to fall down but Ren managed to break its fall and took the skies once more.
"I'm going to...", Ren angrily declared as the Aegis begins to run out of power. And that is when a pale-pink seed exploded in his subconcious where his pupils shrinked and his irises expanded. "DESTROY YOU!"
"Ren has it too!?", Ruby asked in disbelief.
"Those two, they are both using their rage at its maximum potential.", Ozpin examined before he frowned. "And their resolve to kill one another is at its peak"
Ren ignited the beam sabers the Aegis' feet where he used the right foot to sever the Strike's left arm, depriving it of its defense. The White Clad machine retaliated by severing the Aegis' head but the latter once again landed a slash on the cockpit, barely missing Jaune by several inches, leaving him visible to the red machine.
"REN!", Jaune screamed in pure rage while in tears towards his former friend.
"JAUNE!", Ren shouted in return, the feeling being mutual.
"Please! Just stop!", Phyrra pleaded at seeing her leader taking a similar vengeful path as Ren.
"YOU DON'T NEED TO FIGHT!", Nora cried out at seeing her closest friends
"Man...both lost their shit at this one", Qrow muttered as he took a drink from his flask.
The Aegis switched to its MA form, where it wrapped to the Strike. That is where the Scylla energy cannon began charging in.
"Blondie can't escape this one", Roman said at seeing Ren's tactic.
But it was not to be, as the Aegis ran out of power and its phase shift armor going down.
Team RWBY, Phyrra and Nora let out a sigh of relief, seeing that Ren would have no choice but to give up just like Sun did. "I hope they can stop fighting at this one now", Weiss hoped, not wanting to see them fighting, as the the rest of Beacon's students.
Ren gritted his teeth in anger where he found another solution. A small compartment popped out and he began to type its numbers where the warning of a self-destruct appeared on the Aegis' screen before he bailed out of his machine.
"Oh...", Roman deadpanned. "That's his idea"
"Jaune!", Phyrra cried out in horror.
"His cockpit is wide open, he has to get out of there!", Weiss exasparately said.
"There's only a few seconds...", Ruby fearfully muttered.
Jaune noticed Ren flying out of the Aegis and could only gasp at what is to come. And within seconds, the Aegis exploded, catching the Strike within the blast radius. Apparently, Ren was also caught in the explosion. The sight was visible to the Archangel before the Strike too lost its signal and the screen fades to black.
"Noooo!!!", Phyrra and Nora cried out in despair.
