Tony wakes up and looks to his side. Pepper isn't there. She probably had morning sickness. He decides to get up and go to the bathroom to offer help, but the woman wasn't there either. If she wasn't sick, she could only be hungry. Then the man goes down the stairs and goes to the kitchen.
- Pep? - he calls her. No one answers. - Pep? - he continues to call her, but the room is also empty.
- Tony! - he hears the voice coming from outside the house and goes after it, running to the huge yard.
- Pep?
- Tony!
- Pep! - He looks around, but there was no sign of the woman.
Tony realizes he's in his armor, completely destroyed. Then he hears a familiar laugh and his garden begins to disappear, revealing the place where he really was.
It was Titan.
Tony felt Thanos' evil laugh on the back of his neck and immediately turned around. Then he saw Wanda, Vision, Sam, Quill, Drax, Mantis, May... All of them turning into dust.
- Mr Stark? - he hears a familiar voice and looks down. And suddenly he was reliving the moment when Peter Parker was in his arms, about to disappear.
- No... Not again. - he clung to the boy as hard as he could; but nothing stopped him from turning to dust and being blown away by the wind.
- Why didn't you save us? - Stephen Strange's figure appeared in front of him, crouched and wounded.
- I'm trying! Why didn't you tell me how to do it? - Tony asked; but he had no time to get an answer. So he found himself alone on the desert planet, defeated.
- Tony? - he heard Pepper's voice, who was standing, a few steps away from him. Her hand rested on her huge belly, and her face was startled. - Tony, the baby. I can't feel her.
- No... - he was horrified.
- Tony, what's going on? - she asked in fear. Her face already creating cracks.
- No! - he got up and ran towards her, but the woman seemed every second more distant.
- Tony?
- No! - he tried to use his thrusters, but all were completely destroyed. – Not you!
- Tony!
- No! - he threw himself in an attempt to grab the woman; but she turned to dust and he found himself falling towards the ground.
- Tony! - Pepper called him again. Then she got scared when the man got up quickly, also scared. - Tony? - she called him gently, and he looked at her. His face was still terrified, he was breathless, and his body was dripping with sweat.
- Are you and the baby okay?
- Yeah, we're fine. But I can't say the same about you.
- Sorry. Bad dream.
- One of the big ones. You haven't had one of these in a long time.
- Yeah. But I'm fine now... - he caressed his wife's belly and felt a kick from his daughter. - I love you.
- We love you too. - she gave him a delicate kiss on the lips and hugged him for a while, until he felt better. - You should take a shower.
- Ok… - he got out of bed, and on the way he saw the clock on the bedside table striking five forty-seven in the morning. Just as it also marked that on that day it was completing a year of Thanos' snap that made half of the living creatures of the universe disappear.
…
- You don't have to do this if you don't want to. - Pepper warned, caressing the man's leg.
- I need to. It's the least I can do since I couldn't do anything. - he replied, looking out of the window. Then the car's door was opened and he waited for the woman to leave, before facing the fans, haters, flashes and journalists, who were waiting for them at the monument in honor of those hit by Thanos' snap in New York, which would open that day. Tributes like that were being opened all over the world, with the names of local residents.
It was a cold and cloudy morning, very common at that time of year. The square was full of politicians and important people; and civilians waited behind police-mounted bars around the entire site. Some raised plates and support strips, others revolted. Some doubt what they should do now. And almost everyone wore T-shirts or held pictures of their loved ones who were gone. Tony looked at the faces in great pain.
Pepper held his arm gently and the man looked at her. She wore a dress, pantyhose, loafers (which should have been hurting her swollen feet), and an overcoat that was no longer able to hide her belly. All the pieces were black, matching with his suit and the clothes of almost everyone there.
The man looked at her as if to say he was fine. Then he gave his arm for support and together they walked over to where the other guests were.
There was a minute of silence at the beginning of the event, and then the Mayor of New York gave a speech. So, after a round of applauses, people spread out to see the place.
Just like the San Francisco monument, there were corridors and more corridors with huge granite slabs filled with the names of the citizens who had turned to dust. Hired photographers took pictures of the guests reading the names, and Tony pulled Pepper away from them.
- Tony, slow down. I'm a 7 month pregnant woman in moccasins.
- Righ, sorry. I had to get you away from those vultures... - he looked at the sign that indicated the letter of the names that were in that corridor and got silent. Pepper then looked at the same direction, understanding the reason for the silence immediately.
- Wanna help to find it?
- Yes, please. - he said softly, and she caressed his arm and gave him a small smile. So they went to different directions, reading the names from the huge granite slabs.
Tony was the first to find it. And when he saw Peter Parker's name, his eyes watered.
He stood there in silence for a while, just staring at the name written in gold. Until he felt someone stop by his side.
- Mr Stark, could I take a picture?
- Not.
- Ok… - the young photographer lowered the camera. - Did you find who you were looking for?
- Look, I'm not in the mood to talk right now, so...
- It's okay! Look. - the boy pointed to three names not far from Peter and his aunt. - My moms and my little brother. I was going home to tell them I got into college when it happened. When I arrived, all I found was dust and burned dinner in the oven.
- I'm sorry for your loss.
- Me too, for yours. - the boy looked at the names of his family. - Do you think we have any chance of getting them back?
- I don't know. But I'm trying.
- Thank you for that. For trying. - he raised his hand, and Tony shook it. - It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Stark.
Then the boy walked away; leaving him alone with the name of Peter Parker again.
