In this chapter, we'll meet a good friend of Thor and Loki. How wil they react to Loki's actions and Thor's fate?
Gathering around in a circle, Anne, Isabel, Kate, Juliet and Hermia sat down together on comfy cushions. Anne motioned for someone nearby to come and join the group, and a young teenaged girl sat down beside her. She had brown- wavy- hair, brown eyes and a kind smile. This was Sigyn: one of the many new students from Norway, and a good friend of Thor and Loki.
"Don't be shy, Sigyn," Anne smiled. "Come. Join us."
"Is this a feast of sorts?" Sigyn asked, confused.
"Feast?" The other girls looked at one another. "No, this is a sleepover."
"What's that?"
"It's where you invite your friends round to stay the night. You usually have one when it's your birthday."
"Oh! I think I've done that before!" Sigyn nodded. "Thor would always invite his friends round for games and fun, and they'd all sleep in the same room. Loki hated it when they came round. They don't get on- Thor's friends think he's weird. Loki says they're imbeciles."
The other girls looked at one another again, this time with raised eyebrows.
"Really?" Isabel asked. "What would Loki do?"
"He'd play pranks on them until they left."
"So how did you get involved in these events?"
"Frigga, Loki and Thor's mother, would insist that Loki had a friend to play with, too- so he wouldn't be lonely. Loki didn't like it at first, but he likes me now."
"Now?"
"He and I both do magic- we practise together. In a way, he's like my teacher. He's a master at it. If only Odin would take his talent seriously. He has so much potential. He could be a great K-"
There was a knock at the door, and everyone jumped. Anne climbed to her feet and went over to answer it.
It was Warwick.
"Father?" Anne asked. "Is everything okay?"
"I'm just popping in to see if you girls are all alright. Everything okay?"
Anne nodded. "Yes, Father."
"Good. I'll leave you to it. Have a nice evening, ladies!"
Warwick closed the door. Anne went back to her cushion.
"So, you were saying, Sigyn?"
"Oh no, it's okay. It wasn't important anyway."
"Loki has talent? In magic? Like a magician with a rabbit?"
Sigyn opened her mouth to say no, when she realised that telling the truth about their true origins would get them in danger, so she shook her head in confirmation.
"Yes. Yes, he likes that sort of thing. Odin thinks he's silly, but Loki's really good at it. He has a great talent."
"Is Odin his father?"
"Yes."
"By the sounds of it, he favours Thor."
Sigyn lowered her head sadly. "Yes. Yes, he does. We don't know why. Loki is very upset about it. Very angry. In his anger, he lashes out at Thor, sometimes even me. But I know he loves all of us, really. However, I think Loki's anger will consume him one day, and he might kill someone!"
"I'm sure he won't, Sigyn," Anne assured her.
Sigyn shook her head. "No. No, you don't Loki. You don't know what he's capable of…"
She shuddered. Anne patted her on the shoulder to try and comfort her.
"Loki will be fine. All of you will be fine."
Sigyn nodded, shaking.
Isabel passed her a cup of hot chocolate, and Sigyn looked at it warily.
"What's this?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Hot chocolate," Isabel replied. "It's good. Try it, you'll like it."
Hermia laughed. "Have you never had a hot chocolate before?"
"No."
Anne smiled. "Well, what shall we do?"
"Truth or Dare?" Kate suggested.
"Sounds good!" Juliet grinned. "But how about we add something to it to make it more fun?"
"What?" Isabel asked.
"Gossip," Juliet replied. "'Truth, Dare or Gossip'. You have to say something about someone who's not in the room. It can be a rumour, or a secret that they've told you. It's hilarious!"
"Great!" Hermia smirked. "I've got loads of dirt to spill about Rosaline and that Woodville tart!"
"How do you play?" Sigyn asked, finishing her drink.
"I ask, say Kate, 'Truth, Dare or Gossip', She replies what she wants to ask, say 'Truth', and I ask her a question on something. For example: 'Have you done it with Hal yet?' and she replies:"
"No," Kate answered, smiling. "No, I haven't done it with Hal yet."
"Really?" Isabel said, surprised. "I thought you would have done it by now. How long have you been together?"
"Two years."
"And how old are you?"
"Almost 17."
"Like me," Anne smiled. "Okay, let's play!"
"Right, Anne, which one are you going to pick?"
"Umm… Truth."
"Right…. Are you in love with Richard of Gloucester?"
Anne blushed bright red. "I wouldn't say love-" she started, but Isabel cut her off.
"Look how Anne's blushing!" she chortled.
"Shut up, Izzy!"
"Anne loves Richard! Anne loves Richard!" Hermia laughed.
"Don't get me started about you!" Anne protested, pointing at her. "I know what you've been doing with Geoffrey!"
"Oooh!" Kate, Isabel and Juliet whooped. "Cat fight! Cat fight!"
"At least I'm not afraid to admit I've slept with him already!"
"OOOOH!"
"Tart!" Anne giggled. "At least I'm pure!"
"Um, no you're not!" Isabel sniggered. "I've heard Richard sneaking around at night. Who's pure now, Annie?"
"OOOH!"
"At least no one spots me when I'm sneaking around!"
"OOOH!"
"This is entertainment?" Sigyn asked, confused.
"Come on, Sigyn, your turn!" Kate laughed.
"Oh no, I couldn't possibly-"
"Sure you can!" Hermia grinned. "Come on: which one do you pick?"
"Uhhh…"
"Let's pick for her!" Isabel chirped.
"No, let her choose for herself!" Anne retorted. "Which one?"
"Uhhh… I don't know."
"How about 'Gossip'? Know anything good?" Juliet asked.
"Uhhh, well, umm… I hear that Elizabeth Woodville has a secret family with Edward of York. Is that good?"
The rest of the girls stared at her, dumbfounded.
"What?..." Isabel whispered. "Ned dating HER?"
"Having a family with HER?" Anne gasped. "Ned wouldn't do that!"
Warwick barged in. "What about Ned, Anne?"
Anne jumped at the sight of her father. "Apparently Ned has a family with Elizabeth Woodville, Father."
"Who told you?"
"Sigyn did."
Warwick turned to the frightened girl. "My dear, is this true?"
"I… I... Uhhh… I don't know, Sir…."
"Knowing Ned, it's true…" Warwick sighed. He then yelled: "How dare he! How dare he defy me: Warwick! I made that boy the ruler that he is, not her! He'll pay for this! Good evening, Ladies!"
With that, he stormed out angrily, slamming the door behind him.
The girls all looked at each other. Then the doorbell rang.
Sigyn climbed to her feet, and went downstairs to get it. She reached the door and opened it.
It was Loki, drenched in the rain.
He had tears in his eyes.
"Loki!" Sigyn cried. "You look terrible! What happened?!"
Loki sniffed. "May I… May I come in?"
"Of course! Of course!" she stood aside to let him in. "Get out of the rain!"
"Thank you…" Loki sniffled, wiping his eyes. He took off his coat. Sigyn took it, and placed it on the coat rack.
"What happened, Loki?!"
"Sigyn!" Anne called. "Who is it?"
"It's Loki!" Sigyn called back. She turned to him. "Come and get a drink, Loki."
Loki shook his head. "Sigyn… I can't stay."
"Then why are you here?"
"There's been a fire at the prison. And I… And I…" he started to cry, and buried his face in his hands. "I started it…" he whispered the last line, and Sigyn wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "The whole place is up in flames. Ned, Clarence, Valmont, Geoffrey and Thor… Thor…"
"What happened to them, Loki?" she asked him calmly, though inside her heart was pounding with fear.
Loki looked up at her, green eyes wide with fear. "I left them there…" he whispered. "I left them there to die!"
He buried his face in Sigyn's clothes and sobbed. She held him tightly. "It's alright, Loki… It's alright…"
"I killed my own brother!" Loki wailed. "He's dead because of me! Father will never forgive me!"
"Sigyn?" Anne and the others came rushing in. "What's wrong? What's happened?"
"There's…" Sigyn looked down at Loki- who had buried his face in her clothes again- and then looked back up at her friends. "There's been a fire at the prison."
Everyone gasped.
"The boys are trapped inside. Loki was near the area and came to tell us."
"Ned…" Anne gasped.
"Clarence!" Isabel wailed.
"Valmont…" Juliet shook her head.
"Geoff…" Hermia whimpered.
"Thor!" Loki wailed. "My own brother! And Hal and Richard! They were found unconscious in the woods! They were attacked and left for dead! They're in the hospital!"
Anne went white, so did Kate. "Richard?" Anne whimpered. "Oh no! He could be dead, too!"
"Hal could be dead?! Oh, God!" Kate cried.
"We have to go down there! NOW!" Isabel cried, grabbing her shoes and coat.
"YES!" the other three girls agreed, doing the same.
"It's pouring down outside!" Loki frowned for a moment.
"So?" Isabel turned to face him. "My boyfriend is trapped in that fire. He could be dead. Your own brother is in that fire. Don't you care?"
Loki's face went white. He gulped before nodding slowly. "Yes. Yes, of course I care…"
"Then get down there," Isabel replied, opening the door.
The four girls rushed out, leaving Sigyn alone with the God of Chaos.
"I'm a murderer…" Loki whimpered. "Sigyn, will Father kill me for this?"
Sigyn gripped him tighter, stroking his long, combed back hair. "No. No, of course he won't. You're his son."
"But Thor's his favourite. He doesn't care for me."
"Yes, Loki, he does. He does care for you. And I won't let him hurt you."
Loki started up at her. "How could YOU stop HIM?" he sneered. "You can't do anything."
That hurt. Loki was being his mean, usual self again. His dark side was creeping out.
His face softened. "I'm sorry."
Sigyn shook her head. "No. No, you're right," she agreed. "I can't stop Odin. He's the King. What could I, a mere Nornheimer, say to change his mind? You're right, Loki… I can't do anything…"
"You're a gifted sorceress," Loki offered. "You have talent."
Coming from Loki, that was a truly nice compliment. She smiled at him.
"Thank you."
"What am I to do, Sigyn?" he asked.
"You're the God of Mischief. You can think of a good plan. Or has your silver tongue and sharp mind and wit failed you, Prince Loki?"
A smirk graced Loki's downturned lips. "Ah, yes, thank you for reminding me, Lady Sigyn. I shall think of something, fear not."
He grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the door and into the pouring rain. The poor girl shrieked.
"I haven't got my coat or shoes on!" she yelled.
Loki grinned. "No matter!" he replied, still running. "You look better without it on, anyway!"
Sigyn blushed at that comment, and Loki puled her down the road.
"Where are we going?" Sigyn asked as he stopped.
"To prison," he stated simply. "Hold on tight."
And with that, he clicked his fingers, and the God and Goddess disappeared from sight.
