Kim Possible: Vamped

Kim rose out of the ocean with a quarter moon the only light on the remote beach just outside the city that lit up the horizon. She paused to listen even as she stood dripping water and eyeing the deserted beach before walking up to the sandy strip lit to head for the city.

She knew the cruise ship was still maneuvering toward the docks by now, or so she wagered, but she was already reaching shore after jumping overboard and swimming in without risking customs. She just needed to reach a large city to lose herself in again, and hopefully, no one would bother her for a while. Hopefully.

Even China had taught her to be more careful, though. The last thing she needed was to lose control in the middle of a crowd. She hefted the small, soft-sided cooler tote and smiled. She had cleaned out the clinic's blood supply before jumping ship so she at least now she had breathing room while she got settled somewhere. She just had to get set up and find a safe place to live without being noticed.

The walk wasn't that hard on her, not in her new vampire form, but she still had to duck a few cars along the way, not wanting to be seen as she was until daylight changed her back to human. Or mostly human.

She stopped just outside the city, waiting on dawn as she had beaten it to the city with her preternatural strength and endurance fueling her. She waited just an hour before climbing out of her hiding place and went into the city to start her next life. However long it might last.

She was just passing by a diner in a seedier side of the city, which she ironically favored just now when she spotted the small, handwritten 'Help Wanted' sign in the window. Grinning, she went inside, and if necessary planned on using a few tricks to get that job. Because she needed the job to cover her stay if nothing else.

Even she knew that nothing brought the law or other local predators down on you than seeming to be homeless or helpless.

Which would only cause trouble for her if either of them thought she was someone they could exploit. In fact, the trouble would likely be mutual.

"Ohmigod, Amy, its Anna," one of the two blonde girls Kim had met on the ship pointed her out as they came up the street, and Kim found the pair gaping at her.

Just three days ago she had jumped ship, started her new cover as a waitress, grateful they had not wanted her to cook. She could make coffee, and pretty well, but she had yet to manage as a cook beyond microwave or instant meals.

Kim was just getting off her morning shift and was on her way back to the small apartment she had found that wasn't too expensive when the unlikely pair had been walking down the same street toward her.

"Small world," Kim murmured at them and forced a smile. "So why are you two still hanging around the city? Thought you were headed home after the cruise."

"We were robbed before we could get our flight home," Amy said as Dana only nodded. "We lost our tickets, too."

"We called our folks, but it's going to be a few days before they can arrange a flight home," Dana, the green-eyed lighter blonde went on. "Meanwhile, we're trying to just…."

"Funny thing, they don't like you sleeping in motel lobbies," Amy, who was a darker blonde with bright blue eyes yawned as Dana trailed off with a shrug. "Who knew?"

"You don't have a place to stay until you can get a flight?"

"Robbed, remember? We haven't even eaten since we left the ship," Dana grimaced, and Kim that was three days ago.

"Well, not since we were tossed out of the mission the other day for not being really homeless," Amy sighed.

"Hey, I have a place not far from here. It's not much, but you're welcome to crash till your folks come through," Kim offered impulsively. She couldn't help but want to help, especially as Amy reminded her so much of Tara. Then, too, Dana was apparently a very nice girl, too.

"That would be so great," Amy said, yawning again.

"She keeps trying to doze off, and the cops keep trying to make us leave places," Dana admitted. "I'm surprised they haven't arrested us for vagrancy or something."

"Don't worry about that one. If they arrested everyone homeless in this city, they'd never be able to house them all," Kim snorted. "Trust me. C'mon, I'll show you my place. I have a few things you can snack on, and you can crash with me until you hear from your folks."

"It won't be long," Dana assured her. "I swear. And we'll pay you back," the obviously desperate girl added.

"Hey, don't worry about it," Kim told them. "I have plenty of room, and you guys seem okay to me. What about your luggage?"

"We left it in a locker at the airport. We didn't want to carry our things around any longer. We already got robbed once, I'd rather not lose our clothes, too," Amy grimaced.

"And that is why you don't carry a purse in the city," Kim grinned.

"Now you tell us," Dana sighed.

"Come on. My place is back this way," Kim told them and led them back the way they had come already.

"You live in there," they asked as they paused a short time later before a crumbling brownstone.

"Be it ever so humble," Kim smiled. "Hey, the roof doesn't leak, and the water even works. What else do you need," she added.

"Food," Amy groaned.

"C'mon," Dana led her up after Kim to the third floor, and Kim unlocked her door.

She wasn't worried about her blood supply. She had learned from her mistakes and kept it in the insulated cooler bag hidden in a ragged suitcase in her closet behind an old trunk someone had left behind. No one was likely to even look at it, let alone open it.

"It's a dump, I know, but it's home for now. I hope to make enough to get a nicer place later," Kim grinned. "If I even stay in this area," she added.

"You already got a job, Anna," Amy asked in surprise.

"Yep. Always a job somewhere if you don't mind work, or getting your hands dirty," Kim told them with a grin. "I waitress and wash dishes at a diner up the street. You're lucky I'm off this afternoon, or I might not have seen you guys."

"So, you have food," Amy asked.

"Sure. Help yourself to anything, and you can share the bed if you like. I'm going back out to shop, which was where I was headed anyway," she fibbed a bit, "So I'll just pick up something extra for you guys to last us for a few days. Hopefully, your fams will get in touch soon."

"Yeah," Dana said a little miserably now. "Hopefully."

"Well, relax, and make yourself at home," she said. "I'll see you later," she said, and left the small apartment without looking back.

"She's really nice," Dana murmured. "I thought so on the ship, but she really is cool."

"Nicer than your mom," Amy admitted sourly.

"Look, once your mom gets you a flight, you get home, and maybe….I can hitch home, or something. Just take care of yourself, Amy, and I'll get there sooner or later," Dana assured her.

"I just hate leaving you. I still can't believe your mom just laughed and hung up on you," Amy said as she reached out and hugged her.

"I'm not that surprised," Dana sighed, leaning into her girlfriend's arms. "I've never been her favorite," she admitted. "And let's face it, coming out to our folks didn't help my standing with anyone."

"The minute I get home, I'll try to get my folks to lend you…."

"Amy, don't worry about it. I'll land on my feet. I always do," Dana smiled more confidently than she felt.

"I'm just glad you spotted Anna," the girl sighed, and finished her sandwich they had made for themselves before she washed it down with juice. "I'm going to crash now. Hopefully, when I wake up, the airline will call," Amy told her and eyed her cell phone. "Thank God that wasn't stolen."

"Just hope it stays charged long enough for you to hear from someone," Dana reminded her.

"Oh, man. Maybe Ann has a charger," Amy murmured.

"We'll ask when she gets back. Go sleep, nut. I'll clean up, lock up, and probably join you very soon," Dana said with another yawn.

"Love you, Dana," Amy murmured, and went to the small bedroom to rest.

Dana sighed, and smiled after her.

"Me, too," she said, knowing her own prospects were not as promising as Amy's just then.

Kim came back in over an hour later, put the extra groceries away, and checked in on the girls that were both sleeping in her bed wound up in one another's arms.

Even human during the daylight she had a sense for things, and she could tell the pair were in trouble. They weren't telling her everything, but she didn't know if they were being pointedly deceitful, or if pride was keeping them quiet.

She would figure it out. She still remembered something that bastard had done to her from the start, when he was entering her mind and trying to remake it, and decided to try it herself now. Focusing just so, Kim walked over, and put a single finger on Dana's temple as the girl slept on unaware of her presence. She focused hard, but not on changing anything. She just wished to understand, and so she simply looked. She looked and felt the emotions roiling in the girl and saw her heart even as she recoiled from a shrieking, hostile woman that cursed the young girl during a phone call as if she were trash.

Worse than trash.

She frowned as she heard Dana begging, literally begging, and the woman mocking her. Her own mother had heard Dana ask for help, and only laughed. She laughed, and hung up the phone to leave her own daughter lost in a big city without help or hope.

Kim scowled, unable to imagine a mother that would be so cruel, she felt a wave of disgust for the women she never met. Walking out of the room, closing the door behind her to let the two girls rest, she didn't bother to spy on Amy. She had seen enough in Dana's mind and heart. They were in trouble, and even if Amy's folks were apparently trying to arrange her flight home, they had no care for Dana.

Still, for Dana's own mother to mock and deny her so. It was shocking on a level that confused Kim. Her family were still dear to her. She wished she could go back to them. Explain. Only she knew that what she had become was a barrier between them that might not ever be broken now.

Putting her own grief behind her, she focused on Dana and Amy.

The fact Dana's family couldn't accept she was lesbian was actually heartbreaking, but to just abandon her as her mother did. That was wrong. She had the unnerving feeling the girls' hope Amy's parents would also help Dana might fall through. Which left Dana in a bad place. Even Kim knew that the world could be a very dangerous place for a young girl alone on her own.

Unless one knew over twenty versions of kung fu and had a supernatural curse that made you even more of a threat than the monsters around you.

Kim wouldn't say anything to the pair until they heard back from Amy's parents, but if the Sanders couldn't or wouldn't help, Kim intended to help them as best she could. If nothing else, she could ensure Dana had a safe place to stay. She just had to ensure the girl didn't find out the truth about her, or catch her if she slipped up and grew….hungry again.

Eyeing the clock, and seeing the afternoon slipping past all too swiftly, Kim decided she had best practice using that mental mojo she had inherited to keep the girls thinking she still looked normal even after the sun set. She wanted to help, after all, not terrify them.

Eyeing the worn, cracked table, she pondered having something ready for them when they woke. If they had been going hungry, she doubted they would be sated if all they had grabbed was a quick sandwich for a snack while she was out.

While she wasn't the best cook, she could manage a few things. She warmed up some pasta, made chicken breasts you could microwave, and added a sauce to cover the makeshift meal. She was just putting plates on the table when she heard the girls stirring.

Now how to proceed, she considered as the girls stumbled around, obviously still confused and weary after their trials in in the city.

Kim still felt confident, even grateful that at least she could still help someone even if no one else would ever know. After all, it had never been about the fame with her. Just the satisfaction of making the world, or someone's life, a little better.

Well, she mused, apparently, she could still do that.
