I stood beside the Ark's regeneration matrix looking down at Glen's sleeping face. I wanted to touch it. I missed him with all my heart. I wasn't sure how long the process would take. Rebirth had advised that it had no way of estimating. Tahrao-Ju had been less then helpful. He was still upset that I had taken the House of El as my family. He was a sore loser but lacked the power Jor-El had so he was merely a nuisance that spoke sometimes and would provide correct information but would do it begrudgingly. I sighed and touched the glass of Glen's face one last time before heading back to Coast City, the girls would be getting out of class soon and I wanted to pick them up myself instead of sending a car.
The last seven months have been a whirlwind. I finally decided enough was enough, at Clarks insistence that the Luthor's make things right and after three separate expensive official legal requests for a response on the matter of my missing funds. So, I set out to visit Alexander Luthor since I did not know where Glen was. Clark told me a lot of stories about Glen's grandfather. I would like to say he wasn't upset about the fact that I was in love with a Luthor, but he was pretty mad, but you know Clark. He would give the devil a chance to repent. The conversation with Alexander was an upsetting one. I still feel bad thinking that Glen had stolen my money and taken off with it. I did enjoy the look on the secretary's face when I barged into his office though, and when he fired her on the spot when he found out she'd been keeping me from reaching him by phone. Several people at Luthorcorp lost their jobs that day. And eventually one would be arrested.
Alexander Luthor was working out of their Coast City corporate headquarters, inexplicitly he'd shifted them there about three months before I returned. I was standing in front of his personal assistant was at her desk filing her nails and blowing off another call. She looked exactly like I pictured her the power-tripping little bitch. (Sorry I tried not to be rude when describing her but what else could you call her?) I wouldn't have long before security was up here, I hadn't exactly been nice about getting through. I mean I stopped and asked to see Alexander, they refused after calling said personal assistant. I walked past her and towards the frosted double glass doors of Alexander's office. She jumped in my way.
"Who are you? you can't go in there!"
"I'm going to see my thief of a fiancé's father. Move or be moved. I'm not in the mood for you to call screen me again today."
To the little shits credit, she stood her ground I was about to move her out of the way when I felt the first taser hit me. You know how well that worked. One of the security guards hit me with a baton, also useless. I toss the third one who tried to grab me through the glass doors. They shattered and he was groaning on the ground. The personal assistant was hiding under her desk after that. Alexander stood up at his desk.
"What is going on?"
After he realized who was standing at his door his eyes went wide.
"Amber? You're alive?"
By this time, I had three security guards that had guns drawn behind me. I could hear sirens in the distance.
"Yes, and you've been avoiding my calls and letters demanding the return of my funds stolen by your son. I figured after two years it was time for an in-person meeting. I get it if Glen doesn't want to see me, but I refuse to let forty million dollars go."
One of the security guards took advantage of my distraction to try and grab me and I threw him to the ground without looking at him. Bruce had taught me several martial arts, so I didn't even have to leverage my Kryptonian strength. I raised an eyebrow at Alexander seemed at a loss for words. He seemed to snap out of it after another one of Luthorcorp security put their gun in my back and told me to get down.
"Put those guns away. And get them out of here, and if you called the police make them go away. How dare you try to assault my son's fiancée. And pointing guns at her?"
The security guards scrambled to leave as quickly as possible. He walked towards me and looked down at his personal assistant who looked frightened. I think she recognized my voice.
"Darlene, call someone to clean up this mess. After I finish speaking to my future daughter in law, you and I will discuss your position with Luthorcorp."
Part of me was wishing it was Darlene I had thrown through the glass doors. After two years of her declining to put me through and treating me like I was scammer I was furious at her. Especially because the few times my sisters had to go without food. Alexander motioned for me to follow him into his office.
"Have a seat, please Amber. I'm sorry about all that."
I sat down and crossed my legs I was still angry. Thankfully due to my Kryptonian Fitnow look alike my solar core was neatly contained and had been for a long time. So, it was just my pissed off face instead of my evaporate humans face.
"Look Mr. Luthor, I'm not here to exchange pleasantries. I want an explanation as to why all my inquiries and attempts to access my assets that are currently in the trust of Luthorcorp have been rebuffed at best and at worst avoided. I have sent three formal legal demands for a response and none have been answered. I thought, perhaps because I saved your daughter, and I had a close relationship with your son, that maybe, speaking to you politely would resolve the matter quickly without further legal costs on either side. However, your personal assistant, and various other members in your employ have each and everyone of them refused to let me speak to you, and then assaulted me today. So either you give me access to my assets immediately or the next time we see each other it will be in court and I will be demanding restitution because those funds could have helped feed my sisters and saved my mother's life."
He blinked. I admit I was pissed and looking back at it, I probably should have given him a chance to explain before unleashing all my pent-up anger on him, but hindsight is twenty-twenty and my brain doesn't work that way. He took a few minutes to answer, he looked like he wasn't sure how to respond. He looked hurt, which surprised me.
"I apologize Amber. Let me make some calls."
"Wait, look Mr. Luthor, I'm sorry for being so cold and rude. I should have given you a chance to explain. Sometimes I speak before I think when I'm angry and I've been getting angrier and angrier over the last two years about this situation. My mother died, my sisters and I have been barely making ends meet. The legal letters, each of them was a week's salary for me. We've had to use food stamps; This isn't a small matter for us."
He put his phone down and looked at me with a bit of shock on his face.
"Your mother is dead?"
"Yes, she died almost two years ago."
"I'm sorry to hear that. Look, I think the conversation we have to have isn't one for the office. Do you mind coming back to the house, Lana, yourself and I can discuss this over supper?"
I glanced at my Fitnow. I had a shift at the bar tonight. I would have to call in but giving up one night of work for forty million dollars sounded like a good deal.
"Sure, I just need to make a call."
"Go ahead I'll get a car."
I walked out of his office and Darlene was looking at me out of the corner of my eye. I pulled out my cell phone and called the bar's owner and let him know I had a family emergency and wouldn't be in. I glared at Darlene. She was lucky I wasn't teenage me I probably would have punched her. Alexander came out of his office and stopped by her desk.
"Darlene. I do not see a way forward for you with Luthorcorp. If you haven't been letting calls through for someone who I specifically said you should pass through if she should ever call then I have to consider the other calls you didn't pass through. Security will be up to escort you out."
He led me to the elevator and motioned for me to get on first. We rode down and he glanced at me a few times. Something was on his mind that was bothering him. I assumed I would find out soon what it was. The ride back to his house was also bereft of a conversation he made several calls inquiring about my assets and who was managing them for Luthorcorp. He sounded like he was having as much trouble getting answers as I had been, things were starting to become clearer. The person doing it was avoiding answering all questions on it, not just mine. He eventually contacted Luthorcorp's legal department who confirmed they had received my letters and passed them on to one Arthur Stuart. As the half an hour drive wore on Alexander grew more and more angry at each passing phone call where he was transferred around finally he hung up his cell phone and tossed it on the seat of the SUV and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"I'm sorry Amber, we will get to the bottom of this, I promise you that."
"I am truly sorry Mr. Luthor, it seems like you had no idea I was even trying to reach out."
"I did not, and it seems like my employees are ignoring legal demand letters, I wonder how many lawsuits he's caused, and my legal department. Three separate letters and they did what? Shrugged at them?"
The SUV pulled into a long drive way of a gorgeous sea side mansion. The doors were opened for us and Alexander led me into the house, he pulled off his suit jacket and loosened his tie. Lana was looking a little grayer than the last time I saw her. When she saw me her eyes went wide and she literally bearhugged me.
"Amber! You're alive!"
I had not been expecting that kind of show of emotion. If I'd known what I know now, I would have understood better. She had always loved having me as a daughter in law to be and was eager to see Glen and I married. She put her hands on my shoulders and looked me up and down. She was actually crying
"Oh Amber, its wonderful to see you. You look the same. What happened?"
"If I told you, you wouldn't believe me. It was like I was living in a different world."
She led me deeper into the house and out onto their patio. Alexander us shortly wearing jeans and a polo shirt. He sat down with us and a shortly thereafter one of their servants came out with two beers and a mixed drink for Lana.
"Oh, its so nice to see you Amber. These last couple of years haven't been great."
"Amber has had a few rough years herself, Dear. She was telling me that her mother passed away and that she's been having money troubles."
"Why didn't you call us hon?"
"I tried."
"Amber has been trying to speak to me for a long time, but my employees have been dodging her calls or outright refusing them on my behalf."
I looked between them.
"Where is Glen? I called him so much is voicemail got full. Its like he wasn't checking it at all, he hasn't answered my social media posts, he hasn't logged in since before I got back. What is going on? I assumed he just ghosted me. I get it, I was missing for three years. But It would have been nice to get a sorry, moved on."
They looked at each other then back at me, Lana finally spoke after a few minutes of silence.
"Glen has been non-responsive for two years, hon."
"What are you talking about? I saw nothing on the news about that."
Alexander peeled at the label of his beer not looking at me.
"We covered it up. It would have affected stock prices for his corporations."
"What happened?"
"About a year before he had a stroke, lost some mobility. That's when he signed over control of his company and your assets to Luthorcorp. Made me swear to make sure your assets were taken care of. I put them in the hands of our finance department and checked in on them for a several months, things were going well. I honestly thought it was a waste of time, you had been gone for three years. So, I trusted my people to take care of it for me. Three years he never gave up on you returning. I should have listened to him and kept my ears open. I'm sorry."
"But how did he end up nonresponsive?"
"He had another stroke. He opens his eyes sometimes, but he doesn't seem aware he hasn't moved since the second stroke."
"Where is he?"
"He's here."
"Can I see him?"
Lana smiled
"Of course, Amber."
Lana got up and led me to his room. He had an ocean view the glass outside was mirrored so he couldn't be seen. There were several photos of us arrayed where he could see them when his eyes opened. He was pale, and his muscles looked atrophied. He was a shadow of his former self. I started crying. I wasn't prepared to see him like that. Lana stroked my back.
"I know it's shocking at first."
I looked at my finger and the missing engagement ring I had taken off after the sixth month of him seeming to ignore my calls. I closed my fist closed my eyes. I walked to bed and wrapped my fingers around his hand. I leaned down.
"I'm sorry my love, I didn't know."
His eyes opened and looked at me. Lana rushed over.
"He acknowledged you. Keep talking."
I sniffled.
"Glen, if you can hear me, I love you. I'm going to find a way to get you back."
Your god damned right I was going too. I wasn't going to lose someone else. I had access to the most advanced technology in the known galaxies. No matter what the cost I was going to get my love back. I saw tears dripping down his cheeks. Lana brought a chair closer and I sat there with him for hours just holding his hand telling him about what had happened since I had last seen him. Lana and Alexander had stood at the doorway arms around each other for a good portion of it. Lana eventually returned and tapped me on the shoulder.
"Amber, do you want to join us for supper?"
I glanced back at her and I nodded. I stood up and kept holding Glen's hand. I leaned down and stroked his hair then kissed him on the lips. His eyes closed. I whispered to him again.
"If it takes me a thousand years, I will find a way bring you back to me. I will free you from this prison."
I squeezed his hand and followed Lana to the patio. The sun was low. I sat down and played with my food eating slowly Lana and Alexander looked happier than they had been.
"Amber, that's the first time he's responded to anyone since he collapsed."
"He actually looked at you."
"He's still not moving."
"But there's hope."
I spent most of supper not really answering directly just mmhmms and shaking my head or nodding. Truth be told I was thinking over all the equipment I had access too. I didn't think Kal-El would agree to me using the Fortress to help a Luthor. He was pretty hellbent on me getting what I was owed and dissolving ties to them. I didn't need him though I had Rebirth. It was my ship, intended for me and would only respond to me. I had undone the slaving to the Fortress's computer. I don't want to say I was paranoid, but I felt like having my own Fortress of Solitude, even if it was much smaller ship wouldn't hurt me in the end. I realized I had everything I needed on Rebirth. It had a regeneration matrix on it. I could reprogram it for humans and heal Glen. I thought about it long and hard. I wondered if Alexander and Lana would trust me. They were talking about my assets and what we could do to get them sorted out. I blurted it out.
"I think I can heal Glen."
They both stopped and looked at me.
"I can fix the damage, but, I can't tell you how. You just have to trust me."
"I'm not sure we can agree to that Amber."
"Look before I disappeared, I was working on a medical treatment that can repair a human body, cell by cell. I know it works, but I'd have to calibrate it for him specifically. It would take months and he'd been in a coma. It has worked before, we, didn't quite have FDA approval for the tests, but we didn't have a choice."
"What are the side effects?"
"None."
"Sounds like magic."
"It might as well be. I can't explain it and I never will I can just tell you it will bring him back; He will be normal again. You have my word on that."
They looked skeptical.
"Look, when I was younger had a genetic disorder. I received experimental gene therapy and it cured me, but the side effect was my cells started degrading over time. I knew it was happening, so I built this chamber to fix it. That's where I was, there was no plane crash. Glen made that up to cover it up. That is why he never gave up on me, he knew I was progressing fine. He was able to monitor the progress. I don't know why he didn't tell you about it. It took three years to fix the damage. But that was every single cell in my body that needed to be repaired. For Glen it's a few neurons. It will take a fraction of the time. I'm healthy. Given time I can modify the chamber for Glen, and I can fix the damage and make sure it never happens again."
The still looked very hesitant.
"Please let me save the man I love from a fate worse than death. He is in there, trapped. I can give him back his life, our life."
"Can I at least see this chamber you're talking about, the specs, anything?"
"No. That is my one stipulation. I take him with me, and I fix him, but the how if it you will never know."
"I need more then that Amber."
I frowned. I know if it was Sarah or Martha my response would be the same. I looked at them both.
"Mr. Luthor I can say more but not with Mrs. Luthor here it is for your ears only. I'm sorry Mrs. Luthor. The information I have is not mine to give to her."
She looked a bit disturbed by that.
"Please Lana, I will explain later if I think it's appropriate."
I nodded to that. She frowned and left, he and I went down to the beach.
"Mr. Luthor."
"Amber, you're basically my daughter in law, so your almost family call me Alexander."
"Alexander, I know your father was deeply involved with a vendetta against Superman. I know a lot of very, very dark, damaging details that would cause great damage to the Luthor name and Luthorcorp. I tell you this because I'm about to tell you a very deep dark secret of my own. Just so we understand the position each of us is in."
He nodded.
"I understand. So, you know Superman is an alien."
"Yes, and so much more, I have access to some of the alien technology."
His eyes went wide.
"How?"
"I'm not going to go into details. It took me seven years and hours of learning an alien language but I tracked down one of their crashed ships. I used funds from Nova Industries to salvage it and used remote robots to sort through the debris in our data center in Saudi Arabia, away from prying eyes. I was able to piece together something they call a regeneration matrix, it was built for the alien DNA, but I modified it to work for a human, specifically me. I can do the same for Glen. Its touchy technology and not something I want to release to the world and if it wasn't Glen, we would not be having this conversation."
"You know who Superman and Novastorm are don't you?"
"If I did Alexander, I wouldn't tell you, for the same reason I did not want to have the conversation about your father in front of Lana. However, I will admit to having a personal relationship with Novastorm. She is the one who provided me with the alien language study material and the damaged alien database that I used to track down the crashed ship. She needed something from it, and so I did I."
He nodded.
"And Glen has seen this work? He trusts it?"
"I would hope so when it got to the point where I was going to die if I wasn't put in it, he carried me to it and put me in it himself."
"Does Superman know you have this technology."
"No, and that's another reason I need to keep it quiet, I'm fairly sure he would take it back. I honestly think he would be extremely angry that I was using it to help the Luthor's."
"One more question, what did Novastorm want to know?"
"How to kill Doomsday."
He looked surprised.
"What? She's one of them, it killed Superman. Seemed logical to me. Looks like I got it right. She could have asked me to tell her how to conquer the world and I would have told her if it would save my life. Tell me you would do less."
"Amber, I have underestimated you over the years. You were made for this family."
"Then let's get Glen fixed up so I can marry him and we can make it official."
"Alright. I think we understand each other a lot better now. I'm going to ask you again, are you sure you don't want to work for Luthorcorp? We could use someone as ruthless as driven as you to straighten out the organization."
"I think I could help, and I will admit I could use the money."
"Then once Glen in this regeneration matrix, then, how about I arrange for you to move to Coast city, get you set up and you start with Luthorcorp at least until we can sort out this issue with your own business interests?"
"Okay, but Glen first. I can't bring him back from the dead if he has another stroke. We need to do this soon. I will need funds so I can hire a cargo plane to get the matrix nearby."
"I can arrange that."
Alexander was as good as his word. Not that I needed the money. I flew to where I had hidden the Rebirth, which was at the bottom of the arctic ocean again and flew it cloaked to Coast city. Parked it cloaked it and parked it in an old airplane hangar at an abandoned military base and brought Glen there.
I spent several months streamlining Luthorcorp's internal processes and removing redundant positions and improving their internal communications. It would never be perfect it was too big, but it was a lot better. I am sorry to say about ten percent of the workforce was let go because they literally just acted as roadblocks to things getting done. I reorganized it from the top down. Removed useless executives who's only function was to rubber stamp, rubber stamped documents and play golf.
It took six months before I was back in full control of Nova Industries and the other corporation that Glen has acquired and built up under my name. Regal Media Enterprises. He'd acquired several small media companies and pulled them in. He'd sold off all the assets of Novastorm and put it into it. The corporate headquarters was in Coast City. There were some legitimate media brands under it. It had it's own streaming site, and a video sharing site. What surprised me was the bulk of the profits came from internet porn. Glen had me the porn queen of the internet. Not that I was in any of the videos. I literally owned half of the US based porn websites and a self-streaming porn site. The corporation was making record profits. The problem was Arthur Stuart had been pulling dividends out of the company in my name and pocketing them. He disappeared abruptly after Alexander started inquiring about my assets. (He didn't get far, and I got some of my money back, and he is going to be in jail for a long time. Novastorm might have threatened to dunk him in a volcano if he ever saw the light day again.)
In an effort to, make my business interests less, well, scuzzy at least in my opinion I started my own news network, television, streaming. Since I had the backing of Luthorcorp I didn't need to grovel to a specific political party or world view and was able to provide real news from real reporters. In other words, the truth, not the truth as I wanted it to be. To help the station along I used my contacts and natural charms. I was built to the perfect Kryptonian specimen. I made me beautiful and charismatic. I was meant to lead New Krypton, be the face of my creator while he ran thing from the background. Those traits made me a natural. I freely admit half the questions I asked were written by someone else. I was no journalist. Finally, I had special interviews with the heroes of earth. Wonder Woman, The Martian Manhunter, Superman, Batman, and Novastorm. The last one was fun. J'onn pretended to be Amber Morris while he interviewed Novastorm. Even commenting on how similar we looked. We'll see how the news network works out. Its only four months old.
I solidified my secret identity with the very classic for our types, a pair glasses. To further build the illusion that Novastorm and I were separate people. J'onn, as Amber Morris, appeared at events in Coast city, while Superman and I as Novastorm would appear across the country, at a sick children's hospital. We did the same for Clark.
During this time, I was a Junior member of the Justice League, and happy to be left alone unless there was a big enough threat the world needed two Kryptonians. None of those happened though there was one time I was just closest to an extremely dangerous metahuman situation and dealt with it. I had my sisters to take care of and well just the business of business to take care of.
My sisters, I tried hard to be a good parent to them. Sarah had needed another surgery which the money now had access to had helped. To celebrate your seventeenth birthday and her license I gave her one of my street racing cars, NOS removed. I know what teenagers are like. She was doing better, but they both needed therapy. Emma had done a number on them. We had tough times emotionally. Sarah still acted out a lot. Martha was quiet, but she was growing into herself. With a lot of cognitive behavioral therapy, we were able to polish some of her rougher edges so she could deal with conflict better. She would never be a normal person. I know, because we were the same, we were both at some level autistic. She was worse off than me, but even my own experiences gave me the patience to help her. We worked very hard training her brain to read body language. It would never be perfect, and she would always just be masking but it made things go better for her in school and life. I knew because I had done the same thing. I also knew it was exhausting pretending to be normal. So, when she would tell me she needed a brain break from school I would give it to her and let her come to the studio, or just sit in her own Fortress of Solitude. I bought the old military base and developed it into a home for us. I built her a Fortress of Solitude of her own in the old air control tower. She would spend hours up there. They would both pester me to be more involved with being a superhero and I would just say the same thing I said in the interviews when I was asked why they do not see more of me. I'm letting the adults do it. Because even at twenty-five physically and twenty-seven chronologically I still felt like a kid who needed adults to give me advice.
I almost forgot about Jacob and April. They were married. Which is weird admittedly they also had no idea I was alive. So, when I showed up on a news station one day as the new host of a morning show it didn't take long for April to call me. Jacob's father had died, and they were busy with running his business. I knew what it was, and to be honest I was worried for them, but I didn't say anything and any news about the Filloni crime family was conspicuously absent from my news network. I said we'd tell the truth, I didn't say I'd stab my friends in the back.
The girls and I sat beside the regeneration matrix when Glen was about to be released from it. I had cooked up his favorite meal and had set up a table for us to all have dinner. Rebirth was somewhat upset that I was using her as a restaurant. I can't blame her. I had come to realize she was much more, advanced the Fortress's AI, in that she was closer to sentient. We butted heads often, but I won out because I was the Kryptonian in the room. Martha was kicking her legs over the edge of the console she was sitting on, Sarah was annoyed because the internet on her phone wasn't working. Guess signal wouldn't get through the ship's hull.
"Amber, come on do we all have to be here?"
"Yes, he's going to be your brother in law and the closest thing you have to a father for the rest of your lives. I think you can spend a couple hours welcoming him back to the land of the living and having a supper with him while we all catch up. He has no idea he's going to be stuck with you two rug rats."
Sarah made a face. Martha laughed after a few seconds. I knew she was making some random and strange connections no one else would understand without fifteen minutes of explanations. I loved her for her idiosyncrasies. Her mind worked in wonderful, strange ways she had no idea how special she was.
"When he wakes give me a few. Its disorienting at first."
I paced a bit and Martha chuckled to herself again as was looking at one of the walls of instruments. Sarah yawned and then promptly fell over backwards when the regeneration matrix hissed, and a puff of mist was ejected. Martha started laughing uncontrollably and I couldn't help but smirk. Sarah stood up and dusted herself of and scooped her phone off the floor glaring at the both of us. Glen sat up and rubbed his eyes and blinked.
"Where am I?"
Then he saw me through the clearing puff of mist and his eyes went wide.
"I thought I was dreaming."
"Ah you just called me the girl of your dreams."
He hopped out and nearly fell on his face, I caught him and hugged him.
"Slowly old man. You haven't used those in almost three years."
He kissed me full on the lips I returned it and my sisters both made groaning sounds. Sarah was the loudest.
"Get a room!"
I broke the kiss and helped him over to the table we had set up and heated up the dishes with my heat vision. Hey, I have it I might as well use it right? I dished out some food for Glen and I and the girls took their own. I squeezed Glen's hand we smiled at each other. I let go of his hand. I glanced at the two empty places I had set, then I smiled at Sarah and opened my mouth to ask a question. When I heard footsteps. Clark and Diana walked in from where the airlock was.
"Sorry we're late, it took her forever to get ready."
Diana elbowed him hard. I knew from experience that hurt a slight bit. Clark groaned.
"It's okay we just started; Food's still hot."
Clark sat down beside me, and Diana sat down beside Martha who was grinning ear to ear since Diana walked in the room. Clark looked at Glen and then me.
"Looked like we interrupted you."
"Its okay I was just about to ask Sarah about her day at school."
I looked at Sarah and smiled. She started telling us about her day and I could see in her face that she felt like she was finally at home again. Laughter and warmth filled the cold metallic med bay of the rebirth. I glanced at Glen while they were all talking, and I squeezed his hand. He squeezed back. He looked back at me and I knew exactly what he was thinking and I him. That is all I ever wanted out of life someone who understood me that well. I smiled at him the back at the group and just soaked in the love that was emanating from everyone. We had our family together and the rest we could figure out.
