Chapter Two: The Island's Scavenger Clan
The Mudwing egg's landing on a soft pile of moss caused a large group of creatures to scatter through the trees. They hid and climbed up the trees or hid inside of their huts. When they felt that they were a safe distance from whatever had fallen from the sky, they looked back to the egg when a thunderclap sounded overhead. Thunder continued to rumble in the skies above as the creatures continued to watch the thing. Since they had lived on the island with barely any contact from the mainland, they had never seen a dragon egg like this. The creatures were known as scavengers, a race of beings that looked like hairless apes and could do a few things that dragons couldn't. The scavengers whispered to each other as a few calmly came a little closer while the others stayed back. A female scavenger in brown fur pelts stood in front of her father who was only wearing a white furred loin cloth around his waist. They were hiding behind a few branches while the female looked around the leaves at the object with wide eyes.
"Yar, what is it?" A voice asked from behind the older male scavenger. Yar glanced back to a younger scavenger in a yellow loincloth, his son named Zini, and said, "I don't know."
Zini climbed over his father, making the older scavenger quickly grab onto him. They both looked to see the female move towards the thing and Yar called, "Plio! Get back over here! We don't know that thing is!"
But Plio didn't listen to him as she continued to move towards the object. She carefully moved out of the shadows towards the thing. Another young scavenger said from the shadows, "Plio, be careful."
Plio looked up to the sky where the object had come from and took a sniff for any dangers. When she didn't see, smell or sense anything she continued to get closer. Plio carefully walked across the branch of the tree to the object sitting in the pile of moss. The other scavengers watched with caution as their friend got closer to the object. Even her father and brother were scared for her as she continued to slowly walk up to the object. Plio took a deep breath while getting closer. A flash of lightning showed her what was inside of the object. When she was but a few inches from it, Plio sniffed the air around the object when suddenly the object pushed outward forming cracks along its surface. Plio gasped and backed up a little, thinking that something horrible would come out. But then she took a deep breath when the object returned to its normal state.
From a distance, Yar and Zini looked to each other with worried glances before looking back. Plio came closer to the egg and looked over it just a thunderclap rang. Gently putting her fingers through the breaks in the shell, Plio lifted and it made the object open a little. Bending down, she looked into the opening and her eyes widened at what she saw. Backing up a little, Plio glanced back as she said, "Dad, get over here."
Knowing that something was up, Yar started to move from the safety of the trees. Zini moved in front of him, but Yar grabbed his arm and pulled him back. Then the older scavenger scolded, "Zini, it's not safe. Stay here."
"Oh," The younger scavenger grumbled with a slight glare, "I always have to go when stuff is happening."
Yar huffed at the young one's attitude before turning back to Plio and the object. Plio had removed the hatchling from the egg and was starting to clean it up a little as her father came closer. Trying to look over her shoulder, he asked when he couldn't see, "Well, what is it, Plio?"
"It was an egg." Plio said as she turned around to show him. In her arms was a baby Mudwing that had his eyes closed as she said, "Look."
Yar gasped in fear and backed up a little. Plio looked at him with a questioning look and asked, "What?"
"It's a cold-blooded monster that's come from across the sea. A ferocious dragon." Yar said as he backed away. He then said with disdain, "Vicious, flesh-eating."
"Blech." The baby dragon said as if saying otherwise. Yar cringed in disgust, "Eew."
"Looks like an innocent baby to me." Plio argued to her father. Yar then pointed out, "Babies grow up. You keep that thing, one day, we'll turn our backs-" Then he said dramatically, "It'll be picking all of us out of its teeth."
He heard a multitude of gasps coming from behind him and tried to keep them from trusting it by pointing and saying, "Things like that eat things like us as snacks!"
The clan gasped once again to this. A few scavengers yelped in fear before running back. Still skeptical while holding the baby dragon, Plio then asked her father, "So, what should we do?"
"Get rid of it!" Yar turned and said before huffing. Plio was slightly shocked by her father's choice. Yar then started to walk back across the branch. Plio then questioned his paranoia, "What has gotten into you?"
Yar sighed as he stopped. Then with a shake of his head he turned and said, "Plio, that thing is dangerous!"
It was Plio's turn to sigh as she looked down at the Mudwing in her arms. Then gently stroking his head she said, "I'm so sorry, little one." Then with both hands she handed it to Yar and said, "Okay, get rid of it."
Yar gasped in fear as he took the baby dragon from her. Plio huffed as she turned and walked away. Deciding to go through with it he nodded, "All right. I will."
The clan started to speak amongst themselves as Yar moved his hands out from the branch and prepared to drop the baby dragon. Yar started to indistinctly mutter to himself as he prepared to let go. He continued to mutter as he internally fought with himself on whether to do it or not. Yar lowered the baby to where he stared at its face. Seeing at how he was stalling, Plio then said, "You might better hurry it up, Dad." Then she teased, "It's starting to look hungry."
Yar huffed before turning back to his task. The baby dragon gurgled as he slightly opened its eyes. Thinking that it was pretty adorable, Yar was almost about to change his mind when he shook his head to focus. But when the baby gave a small yawn it started to change his mood again. The baby fully opened his eyes and gurgled when he saw Yar. Yar once again smiled especially when the baby gave a cute sneeze. Yar sighed as he had a change of heart and knew that he couldn't do it.
Yar gave a slight chuckle at how cute it was while Plio started to move towards them. With another sigh, Yar gave in and handed the baby back to Plio while saying, "Here. Take him back."
Plio smiled as she took the baby back from him and carefully held him in her arms. Then using her free arm she hugged her father while saying, "It's okay." Then she teased, "We'll teach him to hate meat."
"Hmph." Yar nodded before turning to walk off. As Plio moved back over to the moss pile. Yar then called out, "Watch his head."
Plio and the clan looked to him with wide eyes. Yar then tried to cover it up by saying, "I-I mean, watch it." The older scavenger started to walk off again before adding, "You know dragons. He could bite."
Then while moved back across the branch, Zini walked around him towards the others as they gathered around Plio and the baby. When he was right by his sister, Zini stuck his fingers into the baby's mouth before having his hand slapped by Plio. Zini then said, "This monster hasn't got no teeth." Then he sarcastically asked, "What's he gonna do? Gum us to death?"
"Zini, come on." Plio said to her brother. Looking down at the Mudwing she said, "Look at the sweet little face." The clan continued to gather around as she then asked, "Does this look like the face of a monster to you?"
"No, not really." Zini said with a shake of his head. Then he looked at the little Mudwing and asked Plio, "What'cha gonna call him?"
Lifting the baby dragon a little to get a good look, Plio then thought it over. With a smile as she then held him with both arms close to her she said, "I think I'll call him, Clay."
