Chapter Three: Time with the Island Scavengers
A few months had passed since Clay had been adopted into the Scavenger Clan. Everyone soon got used to the young dragon being amongst them. Even his adoptive father Yar was like having him around. Such as this morning, Yar walked out of one of the huts in the trees before looking back inside and said, "All right everyone! Time to get a move on."
Inside the hut, Zini groaned as he rose off of his cot. Plio on the other hand sat up and a yawn escaped her before she turned to her adopted son. Gently placing a hand on the Mudwing's shoulder Plio shook him and said, "Time to get up, Clay."
Clay mumbled something before turning over on his other side, trying to sleep a little more by covering his face with his right talons. Plio grinned as she said, "Oh, so it's going to be like that is it?" She raised both her hands before saying, "Then I guess I'll have to go and do this."
Then gently placing her fingers on the side of his belly she started to tickle the Mudwing. Clay started laughing as it got him up, and Plio laughed as well. When he fully sat up is when she stopped. Clay looked up to her and she said, "Good morning, Clay."
"Good morning, Plio." The little dragon said with a smile. Then gesturing with her head she said, "We'd better get a move on before Yar starts yelling."
"Yes, Mom." Clay said before hopping off the bed. Plio got up and followed the little dragon out of the hut. After a few months of growing, Clay came up to the scavenger's waist in height. They joined Yar and Zini outside the hut. Yar looked to the two of them and said, "Well, look who finally got up."
"Ha, ha." Plio sarcastically said with an eye roll. Then picking up a basket she said, "We gonna go and pick the fruit or what?"
Yar hmphed before turning to walk through the jungles of the island. Plio, Clay and Zini all followed after the leader of the tribe. After a bit of walking, they came up to a grove of large banana trees and looked up to the fruits at the top. Yar looked to Zini and Clay as he said, "I want the two of you to go up there and start picking the bananas. Just let them drop and me and Plio will catch them."
"Are you sure you want Clay to go up there?" Plio asked a little worried since the Mudwing was still young. Yar nodded and then said, "Yes. Since your baby is starting to grow, we can't take any chances of stressing you out." He shrugged as he admitted, "And I'm starting to feel a little too old."
Clay looked to his adoptive mother and could see that she was coming along with a newborn child. When he was able to understand he was told that sometime ago, Plio once had a mate. But just a few weeks before Clay dropped into their lives he had fallen into the ocean. Clay felt sad that he never got to know him, felt even sadder for Plio. But she told him not to worry since her mate had left her with a little gift.
Clay looked up to Plio and said, "I'll be careful. I promise."
Plio sighed before nodding for him to go. Clay walked up to one of the trees and looked up to the top. He glanced back to Plio and Yar as the latter nodded up the tree. Clay took a deep breath before starting to begin the climb. Using his talons he clutched the sides Clay was able to climb up the trunk. He heard Yar shout from the bottom, "And don't worry! Zini will spot you!"
Yar looked to his son and asked, "Won't you, boy?"
"Yes, Yar." Zini said before climbing up after the little dragon. Clay kept climbing up the trunk until he was close to the bundles of the fruit. Carefully leaning forward, Clay started to pick the bananas off one by one. The curved fruits fell to the ground where Yar and Plio caught them in baskets. When Clay had cleared most of the bananas from the bundle, he was about to move to the next one. But when the bundle suddenly turned he saw one more on the far side. Reaching for it, he tried to pluck it. Plio saw that was a little too far and said, "You don't have to get that one, Clay. We've got enough for now."
But Clay really wanted to get it for them as he continued to reach for it. When he made a swipe for it, he lost his grip on the tree trunk and started to fall to the ground. All three scavengers cried out in horror as the Mudwing fell to the ground. Plio ran to where she thought he would land, but as Clay fell he involuntarily opened his wings. Plio, Yar and Zini all watched in amazement as Clay glided down to the ground. Zini was so awestruck that he loosened his grip a little and he slid down to the ground while screaming like a girl. When Clay flapped his wings before touching the ground, Plio ran over to him and wrapped her arms around him and embraced him in a hug. She sounded frantic when she asked, "Oh, Clay. Are you alright?"
"Yeah. I'm fine." Clay assured and looked up at her. Then gently pulling her head back she put her hands on his shoulders and lightly shook him as she said, "What were you thinking? You could have been hurt."
"I'm sorry, Mom." Clay said when she had stopped, realizing how much he had scared his family. Yar and Zini also joined them as she said, "It's alright, Clay." They looked each other in the eye as she asked, "Just please don't scare me like that again."
"I won't." Clay promised. When she stood up to her full height, Zini came up to him, picked the little dragon up and asked, "That was incredible, Clay. I didn't know you could do that."
"Well, what do you think he has these for?" Yar sarcastically asked as he gently took hold of one of Clay's wings. Then he with a quick motion of his head he then said, "Now come on. We're burning daylight."
The rest of the family followed him to continue picking fruit. The rest of the harvest went on smoothly. And when he finished with the other pickings, Clay was careful when he glided down from the tree.
The sun had passed its noon position when they had finished the harvest. Yar then decided, "All right, everyone time to head back and see what the others brought in."
The Mudwing and the Scavengers walked side by side back to the village. Yar looked down to Clay and he said, "You did good out there, kid."
"Really?" Clay asked looking up to him. Yar smirked and said, "Yeah. But don't be getting a big head from it."
"Yar." Plio warned while narrowing her eyes. Yar shook his head as they continued walking.
Later that day, the entire clan had returned from either hunting, fishing or gathering. They all brought their baskets that were either full of fish, lizards, birds, fruits and vegetables on a wooden table. The clan watched while Yar took a look at the bounty. Turning to the clan he said, "Another good harvest everyone. Dig in."
The scavengers started to move to the baskets and let the children go first. Clay knew that he could have gone too, but decided to let the other kids have at it before he did. Plio knelt down to him and asked, "Aren't you gonna go get something."
"I will." Clay nodded. He looked to her and said, "But I'll let them have the first pickings."
"I taught you well." Plio said as she wrapped her arm around her adopted son's shoulders. Clay leaned into the embrace as he enjoyed being with Plio.

A few more months later, and the new baby was finally coming. The sky was cloudy and looked to start raining as Clay and Zini stood outside the hut waiting to see. Yar and a few other females went in to help Plio as much as they could. As more time went by, Clay had gotten even bigger and nearly stood as tall as the scavengers. Yar once complained that if Clay got any bigger then he would have to start sleeping outside. Which was fine with Clay as he liked being outside seeing and hearing the sights of the island and feeling the mud between his toes. Clay looked to Zini and asked, "How do you think it's going?"
"I'm not sure." Zini shrugged. Clay could tell that his uncle was waiting with worry as Zini said, "But we haven't heard any-"
That was when they heard Plio screaming from inside the hut. Clay stood up and was about to rush in when Zini stopped him. The Mudwing looked to him as the scavenger said, "It's okay. I've been told that this is natural."
Clay trusted his uncle's words as he looked back to the hut and sat back down. He took deep breaths to calm his nerves. Another shout rang from the hut and it made both dragon and scavenger nervous. Suddenly a bolt of lightning flashed and a rumble of thunder boomed overhead. But the storm didn't start. That's when they heard a new sound coming from inside the hut. The wailing of a newborn child. Zini gave a relieved sigh that the baby was all right while Clay just hoped that Plio was alright as well. Yar stepped through the hut's entrance and said, "You guys want to come in."
Clay and Zini nodded as the former stood back up and they made their way into the hut. The other females hurried out to let the boys in. When they came to Plio's cot, they looked at her as she held something in her arms. Wrapped the furs of an animal Plio held her newborn child. She looked to her brother and adopted son and said, "Come and meet the newest member of our family."
Zini knelt down next to his sister while Clay brought his head a little closer to the little infant. The baby was now asleep and Clay thought she was very adorable. Zini placed a hand on his sister's shoulder and said, "Oh, Plio. She's beautiful."
"What are you going to name her?" Clay asked as he lightly sniffed at the baby's face making her coo. Plio then said, "I'm going to name her after my mate's mother like we talked about if it was a girl." She looked down at her daughter and said, "Hello, Suri."
"Suri." Clay repeated as the baby's eyes opened for a second. In that short moment, Clay and Suri looked to each other with amazed faces. When she closed them again, Clay mentally promised to be a good big brother to Suri. Yar then said while placing a hand on his son and grandson's shoulder, "Why don't we give Plio and Suri some time alone. I'm sure they need it."
Clay and Zini followed Yar out of the hut when Plio called, "Clay." He looked back and said, "Could you stay for a minute."
"Yes, Mom." Clay said and turned back to his adopted mother. He sat down next to her and she placed her hand on the side of snout as she said, "I know that a lot has changed in last few days. But I want you to know that none of us think any different of you."
"I know." Clay nodded as he understood. Plio smiled and said, "And I want you to feel as loved as this new child is gonna be."
"Okay. Clay returned the smile when they both looked down. The baby had gotten one of her little arms out of the swaddle of furs and it stuck out. Suri moved her little arm in Clay's direction. Plio smiled as she said, "I think someone wants their big brother."
Clay lifted one of his talons to the baby's outstretched hand and carefully placed his talon to where Suri wouldn't get scratched. Looking at her sleeping face, Clay then said, "I'm gonna be a good big brother for you, Suri. I promise."
Plio smiled as she knew that Clay would.

Author's Note: And I'm gonna stop it here. I know that I could have made it a little more time filling, but this was all that I came up with. Plus, I did want to make it to where we knew what might could have happened between those two periods. And I hope you enjoyed that ATLA moment that I put into this chapter. And as I said we're going to back to the main story in the next chapter. I might make a few flashbacks, but we'll just have to wait and see. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
