Chapter Four: It all happens at Sunset

Ten years had passed since Suri's birth and time flew by on the island. All was quiet in the jungle except for a few birds and such making noises or a cricket chirping. But soon the silence was broken by the sound of screams that echoed through the trees. A trio of scavenger girls quickly ran through the forest to evade a pursuing predator. They continued to scream and run as the predator flew overhead with a roar. The girls ran through a large fallen log and were lucky enough to evade capture as the beast landed before the opening. It reached inside as the three continued to run from it. The creature growled before taking flight again. The girls panted as they ran out of the log and started to run even faster when they heard the predator roaring overhead. The creature landed on the ground and started to run after them as they neared the river. Suri shouted to her two friends, "Hurry! Across the river!"

They were able to hope across the stepping stones before making it to the other side and started running from the beast again. When the three started to run across a large fallen log over a ditch, but the predator's weight caused it to fall a little. The three scavengers were able to make it to the other side and used some vines to swing away. The predator narrowed its reptilian eyes before taking flight once again. Suri's two friends dropped down to the ground and she let go as well. But before she could land next to them, she was grabbed from the air by the creature's talons. The two scavengers looked back just as the dragon holding Suri landed beside a large rock. The two looked in fear for their friend while the dragon looked to her with hungry eyes and growled at her. The brown dragon opened his jaws wide as if to eat Suri, but she quickly looked to her friends and shouted, "Now, girls! Get him!"

The Mudwing looked in shock as the other two scavengers jumped off the rock and landed on his shoulders. They all started laughing as a smile adorned the Mudwing's face and he said with false fear, "Oh, no! Attacking Scavengers!" Looking to their leader he shouted, "Suri, please!"

His adopted sister was able to wiggle from his grasp and they all jumped on his back. It didn't hurt him since he was thick scaled but continued to play along. He started to lay down as he shouted, "I can't take it anymore! There are just too many of you!" While he turned onto his back, the girls had to time their jumps and the Mudwing shouted, "Come on, tiny creatures! Go pick on someone your own size!"

He continued to call for help as they jumped on his belly while someone arrived on the scene. Moving a few ferns out of the way, Plio looked to see her two children and a couple of friends playing together. She chuckled and started to move a little closer. Clay groaned as he acted like he was dying. Then he let out one final gasp of air before letting his head fall limp against the log. Suri, knowing that he was playing, crawled along her brother's belly and said, "Clay, you're not dead."

"No!" Clay said when he raised it, causing the girls to scream. They all laughed while the girls continued to jump up and down. Plio walked along the log and said, "All right, you guys, break it up." Then she reminded while looking at the flowers in her hand, "Remember the courtship?" She teased as she said, "You all gonna miss seeing all that smooching."

The three young Scavengers groaned at the thought and Suri said, "Oh, Mom."

"That's okay, Plio." Clay said to his adoptive mother. She came down to them as Clay looked to the girls and said, "We can just smooch right here."

The girls screeched and ran when Clay started making kissing noises. They all started to laugh as the three ran off. Plio looked to her adopted son and playfully said, "It's such a shame that you don't like kids."

Clay scoffed before playfully saying, "They're nasty little critters."

"Ha, ha." Plio laughed. Then she told him, "How about you go and find Zini." Then she added, "He's probably somewhere rehearsing his pickup lines." She quickly commented, "Let's hope that he's found some new material."

"Okay, Mom." Clay said as she jumped off the log and headed in one direction. Clay rolled over onto his feet and stood up. He began to think of where his uncle might be and an idea came to him. The Mudwing picked up the pace towards the beach that had a view of the mainland. As he came up to the tree line, he could hear Zini's voice, "Hey, sweetie, if you'll be my bride, I'll do anything for ya."

Clay could see him standing on a rock and thinking it over. Liking the sound of that Zini said, "That is good. Oh, that is good."

Clay snorted and shook his head at his uncle's, but couldn't help but smile from Zini's silliness. Clay walked up to the rock as Zini then tried, "Girls, I am quite known as the "professor of love"," He chuckled when he said, "and school's in session."

He let out a wheezing laugh when he thought how good and funny that sounded. He took a deep breath and then said, "Yeah, I still got it."

"I sure hope it's not contagious." Clay playfully commented when he was beside the rock. Zini looked to his adopted nephew and stated, "You sir, happen to be in the presence of a raging epidemic of romance."

Clay chuckled before saying, "Come on, hot rod." Then he reminded, "We gotta get going. You don't wanna miss Grandpa Yar's annual pep talk."

Zini jumped onto Clay's back and the two head back inland. From his spot Zini then commented, "Oh, joy. I sure can't wait to hear the courting advice of an old monkey."

"Hey-hey-hey." Clay playfully said as he disagreed. Then he reminded his uncle, "I've heard that in his day, that old monkey was quite a swinger."

"You talkin' about Yar?" Zini asked as he didn't believe it. They headed towards a large tree next to a cliff where the courtship was supposed to happen. Clay then said, "Yeah, to hear him tell it, he put the "prime" in "primate". Didn't you know?"

"Really?" Zini asked and the two started chuckling at Yar's words.

It was nearing sunset when all the bachelors of the clan started to get ready for the girls. They boys met together in the branches of the forest just a few yards away from the tree by the cliff. Yar looked to them and said, "Okay, boys, gather 'round." He placed a hand on his aged chest as he said with pride, "Listen and learn from the master."

Over at the tree next to the cliff, Plio was giving her own instructions. They all gathered round on the roots to listen. She looked to the eligible females and said, "Now, girls, don't just jump into the trees after the first boy with a cute back flip." She chuckled when she remembered her time and said, "It's a lot more fun if you keep them guessing."

"And if a cute back flip doesn't work on them, guess." Yar told them after telling them about the cute back flip. The boys started to laugh with Yar about it.

"You're never going to forget this day." Plio told them as she and Suri handed out the flowers. Then she said, "So make it one to remember."

"But if you mess it up, don't worry." Yar reassured. He chuckled when he added, "They'll never remember it."

"Come on, you guys!" Clay shouted from down below. The boys looked down to see the Mudwing walking by with Zini on his back. Clay then said, "We don't wanna let the girls down!"

"Go on, now!" Yar ushered the boys. They all jumped down with cheers as he reminded, "Chest up! Chin up!"

Clay was able to catch them all on his back and had to toss one on his back when they landed on his nose. Yar then told his adopted grandson, "Make 'em look good, my boy."

"Come on, Yar." Clay said as he looked up to the branch while walking to the tree. The Mudwing smiled as he said, "With my charm and your brains?" He shook his head and was confident when he said, "There's no problems."

Yar laughed as he stood in the trees. When he stepped out of the shadows of the forest, Clay gave a roar to let the girls know it was time. The girls all looked to the incoming Mudwing while Plio and Suri moved out of the way. Clay laughed before letting loose another roar and slowed down before turning to let the boys look to the tree. Clay showed them off while saying, "Hey, girls, look what just pulled into the village."

"Hey, ladies!" One of the boys shouted. The girls started giggling when Clay said, "Your buffet table of love."

"Right here! Right here!" One of the boys shouted to the girls. Another waved and shouted, "Hey there, beautiful!"

Zini moved along the dragon's back and tried one of his lines, "Hey, free samples! Get me while I'm hot!"

But he slipped and hung onto Clay's tail to avoid from falling off. He held on tight with a, "Whoa!"

When he was sure that he wouldn't fall, Zini looks to the girls and laughs sheepishly. From her spot, Suri giggled and said, "Zini."

She and Plio then continued to make their way back to the trees to watch. Zini was able to rejoin the other boys on Clay's back when suddenly they all jumped off with cheers. Zini quickly followed behind them. Clay walked back over to the forest and laid down on a root to watch the events. All the eligible males climbed to the top of the tree before letting out their best war cry. Suri, Plio and Yar all joined in on the war cries. Clay smiled before joining in on the fun and let out a loud roar that shook the trees. The trees swayed from the power of the roar and Zini lost his grip and fell into a collection of branches below him. Suri winched from the fall but giggled as she watched her uncle kick his feet as he was stuck. The other males then jumped from their perches and did back flips as they sailed through the air. The boys all grabbed onto a vine and swung out and prepared themselves. Zini grunted as he tried to pull himself from the foliage. Deciding to give his uncle a hand, Clay got up, ran to the branch and grabbed it with his teeth while telling Zini, "You're missing all the action here, Zini. Come on."

"Hey, haven't you heard?" Zini questioned as he righted himself. He flexed his arms to make muscles and said, "I am the action!"

With a quick twist of his head, Clay sent a laughing Zini flying through the tree. The blonde Scavenger was able to grab a vine but didn't notice it wrap around his ankle. He swung over the girls as he and the other boys waited. The girls looked to each other before giggling at Zini's antics. Then they too leapt onto the vines and started to climb. Everyone of the boys and girls looked to the mate of their choosing. Then with a leap of faith, the girls made the first move and jumped, followed by Zini and the other fellas. But Zini's stuck ankle was the only thing keeping him back. The young Scavengers landed on another vine before jumping towards their true love. A boy and a girl Scavenger grabbed onto a vine that would intertwine with their chosen. One by one, they were able to find their special someone and climbed to the top of the tree. All except Zini who had just gotten his foot loose from the vine. He looked around the tree to see if there were any single ladies left, but to his disappointment there weren't any, again. He lowered his head in sadness that the couldn't find the perfect girl for him. Those not amongst the courtship watched as the new couples climbed to the top of the tree. As he watched them go up, Clay felt really sad for his uncle. Up at the top of the tree, the couples looked out to the horizon to watch the sunset.

Clay turned to where he could see Zini still hanging and went over to try and cheer him up. The Mudwing tried some encouraging words, "Don't you worry, Uncle Zini. You always have next year. And maybe even the right girl will come along."

"Hey, I'm lucky to be rid of them." Zini said, trying to mask his pain. Then made himself sound strong by saying, "With the ladies, before you know it, they all wanna move to a bigger tree."

"Hmm." Clay agreed somewhat with that, mostly to cheer Zini up. The blonde Scavenger lowered himself onto Clay's nose. Though Zini didn't say it, he was appreciative of Clay having his back since they were more or less in the same boat.

From their spot, Yar, Plio and Suri were sad that Zini struck out again with the courtship. Yar was sad for his son, "Oh, well. Poor Zini. Our clan still has one bachelor."

"No." Plio disagreed, knowing that there was more than one single male in the clan. Looking to her adopted son she as he and Zini walked away from the tree and said, "We have two of them."

Getting up as Clay started to lay down, Plio walked over to the Mudwing. Zini hopped off of Clay's snout and walked back to the main forest. Plio walked up to her eldest child and stood next to him. She shrugged and gently said, "Well, it's never really been my brother's best event."

"He's got a tougher hide than mine." Clay agreed. Plio placed a comforting hand on Clay's face before hugging his neck and said, "Oh, Clay, if only there was someone on the island for you." Then she thought about it and joked, "Well, you know, someone who looks like you, only much prettier."

Clay chuckled before saying, "Come on, Mom." He looked around before saying, "I got all I need. What more could I want?"

A new sound came to his ear flaps and Clay looked up to the sky. All the Scavengers look up as well to see a bunch of flaming rocks falling from the sky. They streaked overhead before disappearing on the horizon. Clay was awed by them and stood up. Plio was amazed as well while staying close to Clay. Suri wanted to go over and watch as well, and a gentle push from her grandfather made her go. Suri ran towards her brother and climbed up on his back. With eyes full of wonder she asked, "What are they?"

"I'm not so sure." Clay shook his head. Jumping up to a nearby branch, Suri climbed to the top for a much better look. She joined the couples at the top to watch the falling rocks. The falling rocks started to come down in multitudes and some hissed as they fell. Clay took a few steps towards the edge of the cliff as the falling rocks continued to rain down. From his spot with the others, an odd feeling came over Zini as he could feel something was about to happen. Plio joined her father before looking into the sky. A few birds squawked in fear as they flew away. A smell came to Yar's nose and he didn't like it. Plio looked to her father and asked, "Dad?"

One more sniff, and Yar told his eldest while not looking away from the falling rocks, "Something's very wrong."

Plio then quickly made her way back to the tree and towards the Mudwing as he didn't move from his spot. Yar quickly followed after her. Coming to a stop behind him she asked, "Clay, where is Suri?"

"She's up in the…" Clay started to say when something caught his eye, "Tree."

A low rumbling made everyone look up to see the mother of all flaming rocks hurtling down from the sky. They watched as the rock fell past the clouds before falling somewhere in the ocean and a bright light erupted from its impact. Everyone shielded their eyes from the intense light and only looked again when it faded. The impact had created a huge mushroom cloud and everyone was worried about it. Numerous waves rolled out from the impact and knocked everything back on the island. Everyone gasped before getting knocked down a second time. Yar had fallen onto his back and Plio helped him while shouting, "Come on! Go! Go! Get going!"

She was about to join him and the others when she heard her daughter shout, "Mom!"

"Suri!" Plio shouted and looked to the tree. The other lemurs had run off and left the little lemur alone. Fireballs started to fly from the impact and it made her really scared. Suri found that was stuck in the branches and was scared as she shouted, "Mom! Mom!"

"Suri!" Clay shouted from below. He looked for signs of his adopted sister and she again, "Mom!'

"Suri, where are you?!" A worried Clay shouted into the tree. Plio ran up to Clay and climbed up onto his back before jumping onto a tree branch and headed up. She popped up next to Suri before grabbing her and heading back down. Clay raised up on his back legs as Plio came falling down with Suri in her arms. When she landed on Clay's snout, Plio then told him, "Run, Clay! Run, run!"

Clay didn't need to be told twice as he turned and ran from the tree. The fireballs started to rain down and hit the ocean as a good number of them headed for the island. Everyone, from Scavenger to Mudwing ran for their lives into the jungle. Screams and booms could be heard all around and he gasped when a few flaming rocks hit the ground ahead of him. He swerved to the side to dodge them. Yar was starting to fall behind when Clay's talons wrapped around him as he shouted, "Yar, come on!"

Tossing the Scavenger onto his back, Yar was grabbed ahold of by Suri and Plio and they all hung on for dear life. They saw Zini running across a fallen log and Clay and Plio shouted, "Zini! Jump! Jump, Zini!"

Taking a leap of faith, Zini jumped off the log and nearly fell short. Luckily for him his family grabbed his hands. Plio looked to her brother and shouted, "Hold on!"

Fireballs continued to rain down and more and more explosions rang all around them. A fireball landed right behind them and it knocked Clay off his feet. He landed on the ground and skidded across the dirt before hitting a tree with his snout. Quickly getting back up, Clay shook his head while running again. He swerved out of the way when more fireballs landed and exploded beside or ahead of him. Clay made it to the other side of the island as the chaos continued around them. But when they came to the edge of a cliff, Clay came skidding to a stop. When he did stop, Zini almost fell off but was grabbed by his sister and father. They looked down as a few rocks tumbled down to the sea below. They looked about to see a way to safety but couldn't see one. A wall of fire and the flaming rocks caused the courtship tree to fall over. Clay and his family looked back with a gasp to see the wall of fire coming right at them. Seeing it come closer, Clay decided to take a chance and jumped off the cliff. The Scavengers on his back screamed as they fell to the ocean. Clay quickly opened his wings and allowed them to glide down to safety. They were about to touch the water when a fireball impacted the water and it caused them all to fall into the ocean. They all hit the water and quickly swam up to the surface while Clay sank a little deeper. Plio, Yar, Suri and Zini found themselves a piece of drift wood and climbed aboard. Clay turned under the water and started to head back up. They all looked around for Clay who came up with a gasping roar. He started to swim to keep himself afloat and coughed the water out of his lungs. Looking about he called out, "Plio! Yar! Suri! Zini! Where are you guys!"

He continued coughing when he heard Plio shout to him, "Clay, over here!"

"Over here, kid!" He heard Yar shout. Looking in that direction, Clay could see them on their piece of drift wood. Clay quickly swam to their aid and when he was next to the piece of drift wood, his family quickly jumped onto his back. When they were all on his back, Clay quickly swam for the mainland.

\_|_/

It took Clay a few minutes of swimming, but finally felt the land under his feet and started to walk up the beach. His talons touched loose stones as he walked out of the ocean. The Mudwing breathed heavily from the long swim while trying to get his family to safety as he walked amongst the burning and nonburning sticks from the mainland. When he reached a more stable spot, Clay laid down and let his family slide off. Yar started coughing up a storm from the sea water while Plio and Suri came up to Clay and they hugged his shoulder. Zini helped his father down as Yar continued to cough. Clay lifted his head and took a look around the burning pieces of wood. They all looked around at the destruction before slowly turning their gaze to their island. What they saw broke their hearts; their island was ablaze and they all started to think the worse for everyone on the island. Tears ran down their faces as they all knew that they were the only survivors. Trying to be the hopeful one, Suri walked to the edge of the beach where the rocks met the water. She let loose a war cry in hopes that it would be heard and they would hear something back. When she didn't hear anything, she let loose another war cry and even Clay tried by roaring to the island. But still there was nothing.

Suri started to cry for all the friends that they had lost. Plio, Yar and Zini came up and hugged the poor girl. Even Clay move to where he could wrap his wings around them as he too was very sad. Suri looked to them and whispered, "I feel bad. I feel bad."

"Oh, Suri." Plio said as she stroked her daughters hair. Suri muttered as she cried, "They're all gone."

Tears rolled down from their eyes as they knew. But Plio comforted her youngest by saying, "It's okay. I'm here. I'm here."

Looking about, Clay knew that there could still be dangers lurking about. He then said to his family, 'Come on, you guys. We can't stay here. It's not safe."

They all looked to him as he unfolded his wings and against his sides. Then lowering himself, Clay allowed the four Scavengers to climb onto his back. Suri was the first to climb up and was soon followed by Plio and then Yar and Zini. Once they were all sitting on his back, Clay stood at his full height and turned to walk away. But before he left, the Mudwing cast one final glance at the burning island before another tear rolled down his cheek. He looked up when he saw a flock of birds flying inland and started to walk away from the burning beach. The five were no walking through a much bigger world.

Author's Note: This is one of the most tragic scenes from the movie. I can't really imagine my entire world that I've known for so long gone like that. I can't say that my world is perfect, 'cause it's not. But God's world is perfect. I look forward to reading your reviews.
