Chapter Five: A Whole New World to Them

Clay kept walking with his family still on his back and they found themselves in a desert. Large rock formations stuck out of the sand as they went by. When he started to tire, Plio could see it and said, "Let's rest under that ledge there."

The tired Mudwing looked to where she was pointing and could see a rock formation that had a ledge jutting out from the base. Clay knew that he and his family needed to rest so he walked under the ledge and the brown dragon laid down. Suri, Plio, Zini and Yar slid off of Clay's back and laid against his side. Clay extended his wing over them to keep the winds off of them. The four huddled together while pressing up against Clay's side as they tried to sleep.

The next morning, the sun's rays crept over the land. They soon touched the sleeping family as Clay's eyes scrunched for a moment before fully opening. Looking about, he saw the desert and how it was practically lifeless. Clay wanted nothing more than to go back to the island, but he knew that it would never be home again. Hearing the others start to wake up he turned to them and looked down to them. As they started to stretch, Suri then asked, "What are we going to do now?"

"We'll find somewhere else to live." Yar reassured and rubbed the top of his granddaughter's head. He looked to each of them and said, "A place that's big enough for all of us."

He then looked to Clay and nodded, "All five of us."

Clay smiled in appreciation to this and motioned for them all to climb back on. Yar and Zini helped their youngest climb up on Clay's back before they and Plio followed up next. When they were all hanging on, Clay stood up before carrying on through the desert.

The family had journeyed many miles through the desert and there were no other signs of life but them. The sun was starting to set in the west once again. The wind whistled as it rushed past them while they rounded a rock formation. Feeling a little frightened, Suri started to cry again. Yar patted her back and said, "Now, now, don't cry, Suri. There's nothing to be afraid of."

"Look!" Zini shouted when he saw something. Yar cried out in shock while looking around. Clay saw it as well, "Whoa!"

They saw a shape running over a hill and it was gone out of sight. Glancing back, Clay asked, "Did you guys see that?"

"What?" Yar asks as he didn't see it. Zini nodded and said, "I sure did."

"Me too!" Suri shouted as well. They climbed over the hill to see if they could spot it again, but they couldn't see any sign of it. Plio looked about before asking, "Where did it go?"

"I don't know." Clay shook his head. Then he wanted to see it again and said, "Let's go and find it."

"Leave it alone." Yar ordered. But it was defied when Clay walked ahead and he cried out, "Hey!"

Plio shushed her father and warned, "Dad. Keep it down."

"Can't you see that it's scaring Suri." Yar lied, not wanting to deal with whatever it was. Suri looked to her grandfather and said, "What? No, it's not."

"Everyone keep it down." Clay said as they all looked around. The sound of distant cooing came to their ears, but it was so far away. A feeling of dread was coming over them as they looked about for the thing. A nearby chittering sound made Clay look up a hill to see the thing. A blue Speed Stinger was busy picking at its feet with its teeth. When it finished it looked to the Mudwing and the Scavengers on his back. Soon another Speed Stinger joined the first and the two started growling at each other. The five didn't like the look of this and Clay gasped when he heard more chitters from all around. They looked all around to see that they were surrounded by a pack of Speed Stingers. The Speed Stingers all squawked or trilled at one another before starting to draw closer to their prey. Clay was just about to get him and his family out of there when a Speed Stinger landed on a rock next to him. He gasped when he turned to it and it trilled while looking at them. Then it hissed at them menacingly with a hungry look in its eyes. Clay backed away with a gasp while Suri screamed and clung to Plio.

Clay looked around to see them coming closer to them. Clay slowly and cautiously started backed away from them as they kept coming towards him. Soon the family was literally backed into a wall. One of the Speed Stingers prepared to pounce and it made its move with a leap. Clay narrowed his eyes before using his tail to swat it away. The Speed Stinger screeched as it knocked into it members of its pack. As they started to pick themselves up, Clay bolted from the area at his top speed to get his family to safety. The Speed Stingers quickly gave chase after them.

Clay looked back to see the Speed Stingers running after him and were quickly starting to catch up. A sand storm started to pick up over them as they kept running. One Speed Stinger jumped up and was able to latch onto Clay's side before biting into his side. Clay let out a pained roar and Plio responded by using her foot to kick the Speed Stinger off. The Speed Stinger tumbled off the Mudwing while another jumped up and tried to take a bite out of Yar but missed the Scavenger. Yar yelped in fear when it happened and nearly fell off. Zini and Plio were quick to catch their father while the latter shouted, "Yar, hold on!"

"Pull me up!" The old Scavenger shouted as he tried to climb back up. Another Speed Stinger jumped onto Clay's side and tried to take a bite out of Yar, but missed when he was pulled up. Yar looked down with a glare before delivering a kick to the Speed Stinger's face, making it fall off his adopted grandson. The pack suddenly heard something in the sand storm and began to back off.

Plio noticed this and shouted the dragon, "Clay, they've stopped following us!"

Clay looked back and started to slow down as well. But it proved to be a mistake as he looked to his right and said, "Huh?"

His response was to be knocked over by an older Skywing. The red and yellow dragon looked down the Mudwing and growled, "Stay out of my way!"

The Scavengers quickly moved out of the way. A much older Sandwing looked down to Clay and grumpily said, "You heard Sky. Move it!"

Clay started to get back up on his feet as the family ran back to him. Clay had to move out of the way when different kinds of dragons walked past him. Clay was amazed to see how many dragons there were. He heard squawking from down below and looked down to see smaller dragons rushing past his feet. He lowered his head as they continued to walk under or around him. When he raised his head again, he and another dragon grunted when their faces touched. It was a female Skywing and sternly told Clay, "Watch it."

Clay watched as she walked off with the other dragons and she cast one final glance at him. The sound of ferocious came to Zini and he warned, "Clay, watch out!"

Clay turned to see a Gronkle making its way to him and quickly moved out of the way. Even smaller dragons hopped past the Mudwing as he and his family watched them go on. They were all suddenly shaken when heavy footsteps shook the ground. Looking to the back of the herd, they saw a large female Hydra stomp towards them. Clay quickly ducked down as she passed over him and his family. When the Hydra had fully walked over them, Clay once again stood up again when a Gronkle walked by him while commenting, "Walking backwards, huh? Well, let me know if that should get you there any faster." Glancing back the Gronkle shouted, "Keep those little legs moving, Toothless, or you'll get left behind."

Clay saw a Nightfury panting as it tried to keep up with the herd. The sand storm started to dissipate as the three dragons disappeared down a hill after the herd. Clay walked over and looked down to the herd. His eyes widened at the sight of it when the Hydra gave off another bellow. From behind her mother, Suri leaned forward and said, "Look at all the Clays down there."

"If you're even thinking about joining them-" Yar started to warn. But a growling Speed Stinger made Zini wrap his arms around his father and they all looked to see the pack starting to come back. Plio then said, "What are we waiting for?"

"Hang on you guys!" Clay said before running after the herd. The Speed Stingers ran to the edge of the hill and watched their prey once again escape them. One of them hissed at the fleeing Mudwing.

The leaders of the herd started to slow down and so did the rest of dragons. Clay was able to catch up to them again and looked to the dragons. He looked up ahead to see the two Skywings and the Sandwing looking over the herd. Sky looks ahead before his second in command said, "Sky…"

Sky snorts as he looked to the Sandwing. The older dragon then suggested, "There is a much more protected spot further down the-"

"We'll rest here for the night." Sky decided. Then he ordered, "Go ahead, Dune."

Dune slightly glared but complied as he turned to the herd and let loose a signaling roar. Most of the herd knew what to do and started to settle down. Sky and the other Skywing watched as the herd moved about. At the back of the crowd, Clay and his family watched as everyone started to move about. He heard the Hydra say to the Gronkle in a fancy accent, "Oh, Meatlug, I do wish that we were at your Nesting Grounds right now." She sounded distraught as she said, "All this pushing and shoving about amongst the others, just for a place to sleep."

The Hydra shook her long neck and said, "I'm just not used to this kind of behavior."

"Oh, Baylene," The Gronkle said with a shake of her head. Then she advised, "you want them out of the way you need to use your big feet. Just give them a kick." Seeing a small dragon getting to close she kicked and shouted, "Git now!"

The small dragon ran off while Baylene didn't like the sound of that, "Ooh, I just couldn't possibly do that." Then using one foot and her tail to balance herself she gently started shooing them away with her other foot while she said, "Oh, shoo, shoo."

"Will you come on now, Baylene?" Meatlug questioned to the Hydra. Then she commented, "You wanna get to the Nesting Grounds alive? Then you gotta show some backbone."

"Hey, there." Clay said when he appeared next to her. It caused the Gronkle to scream in fright. Clay and his family chuckled as she turned around and the Mudwing said, "Oh, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to frighten you.

"Uh, it's just that, we kind of overheard you talking, and w-" He stopped when the Mudwing walked right up to him and dropped a rock down at Clay's feet. Clay didn't know what to say, but Meatlug did and he looked to her when she said, "Well, my word." Looking over to Baylene she said, "Would you look at Toothless." Then turning his gaze to Clay again as the Night Fury started dancing about she said, "He doesn't normally warm up to strangers that fast."

Baylene lowered her to Clay's back when she spotted the family and took a few sniffs. The hairs on their heads tickled the Hydra's nose and she sneezed making them cringe. She then commented, "What an unfortunate blemish."

"Good mud bath will clear those right up." Meatlug added, not knowing of the Scavengers. Yar looked to the Gronkle with a slight glare and questioned, "Excuse me?"

Meatlug returned the glare and shrieked when she realized that they weren't what they were. Clay chuckled and said, "Uh, he's my grandfather, just a couple times removed."

"Try a couple of species removed." Zini commented from the back. Plio slightly shrugged in agreement to this. Clay then introduced them, "My name's Clay." Looking back to the four on his back he said, "And this is my family. We're all that's left."

"Oh, my dear. I am so sorry." Baylene said as she felt truly sorry for them, since she somewhat knows the feeling. Meatlug sidled up to Clay and said, "Baylene here is the last of her kind."

"I heard you say something about a place called, nesting grounds?" Plio asked, curious to know more. Meatlug looked to the Scavenger and smiled as she said, "It is the most beautiful place there is, my child. It's where the dragon herd goes to have their babies."

"Will we find anybody who looks like us there?" Suri asked, starting to wonder. Meatlug lightly shrugged as she said, "Oh, baby girl, the last few days, I've seen them come in all shapes and sizes." With another shrug she said, "Who knows what we'll find. The hard job right now is just getting ourselves there."

"And we're being driven unmercifully through this journey." Baylene added. Clay didn't like the sound of it as he questioned, "By who? Who would force someone to keep going without thinking of others?"

"Sky," Meatlug said, drawing Clay and his family's attention to her, "the dragon herd's head dragon. A Skywing with a relentless attitude."

"We can hardly keep up as it is." Baylene regrettably said. Then she stated, "And older dragon like myself-" She stammered when she said, "I-It's- Well, it's positively indecent."

"Then tell him." Clay said with a chuckle. Then he asked, "What's the worst thing that he could do?"

The sound of growling made them look and Clay's face fell with wide eyes. The Skywing that had knocked him down earlier came along with the older Sandwing and the female Skywing from earlier by his side. Toothless quickly moved out of the way and went quicker when the Sandwing snarled at him. Sky pushed past him and Clay and the Mudwing watched them walk before asking, "What's his problem?"

"That's him, honey." Meatlug said as the three continued to walk. Clay looked to her when she said, "Sky."

"Huh." Clay said before moving forward to the shock of Meatlug and Baylene. Then he called after the Skywing, "Uh! Excuse me! Sky, you got a second."

Sky snorted when he looked back to the Mudwing. Dune turned to Clay and growled, "Get lost, kid."

"Hmm." Sky said with a small grin. Then he told the Sandwing, "Relax, Dune. It's alright."

Sky turned and walked up to Clay. The Skywing looked him over before asking, "Who are you, Mudwing?"

"Uh, Clay." Said Mudwing introduced himself. Sky then asked, "Why aren't you uphill with the-" He stopped when he saw the waving family of nervous Scavengers on Clay's back. Sky shook himself to get back on track and said, "Uh, young bloods?"

He blew a breath at the Scavengers. Though Clay didn't like that, he did say, "Well, I was back here talking to these guys."

Meatlug gasped while moving closer to Baylene while Clay then said, "I guess that they-" Clay shrugged as he said, "They're having a bit of a hard time keeping up." Then he suggested, "So, uh, you know, maybe you could slow it down a bit, please?"

The female Skywing chuckled at how nice and charming Clay was. Sky pretended to think about it, "Hmm. Let the weak set the pace." Then he mockingly said while looking to the three, "Now, there's an idea.

"Better let me do all the thinking from now on, Clay the Mudwing." Sky said before turning away. Not liking how his new friends were being treated, Clay then said, "Hey, they need help back here."

"Hmm." Sky said as he looked back to Clay. The Skywing didn't like his leadership being challenged by anyone, but kept calm as he warned, "Watch yourself, boy."

Then with a snarl he tuned back to the majority of the herd. Dune and the female Skywing started to follow as well. But she stopped and looked to Clay and said, "Don't worry. That's how my twin brother always treats newcomers." She took a few steps before adding, "No matter how charming they can be."

"You sure know how to catch a girl's eye there, stud." Zini said as he moved up to Clay's head. Meatlug then said, "I wouldn't be catching anybody's eye if I was you," she looked to the Skywing as she said, "especially Peril's."

Clay turned to her as she said, "You just keep your head down, and you mind what Sky tells you. And everything will be alright."

"Since when do we take orders from the likes of him?" Yar questioned while gesturing to the Skywing with his thumb. Meatlug chuckled before saying, "Sky has swatted flies that were a lot bigger than you, pops."

"Who are you calling, pops, you granny?" Yar teased and she slightly glared. Then he added, "I could hold that monster's brain in the palm of my-"

"No, Yar, she's right." Clay said, figuring that it would be best. He looked to his family as he said, "It's better to keep our heads down with this bunch here than to get picked off by…" He looked to the ridge behind them and saw the pack of Speed Stingers, "those things."

They chittered amongst themselves as the eight looked up to the pack. Meatlug then commented, "Well, you should just consider yourself lucky that's all that's following us."

The Speed Stingers started to fight amongst themselves while others kept watch over the herd.

Author's Note: You know, don't you kind of wish that Eema hadn't said that in the movie. Cause saying stuff like that basically creates a big disaster. I look forward to reading your reviews.
