Reassurance - A Pair of Kings Fanfiction

A/N - Well, here is a new POK one-shot from me! I hope you all enjoyed it; sorry it's not very long; I didn't plan for it to be since it's a one-shot.
But this idea came to me after watching a few episodes again. Basically, after "The Return of the Kings," Brady has a hard time sleeping because his thoughts keep him up. So while trying to clear his head, he and Mikayla have a small heart to heart light conversation. Slight Brakayla if you squint but mainly friendship. Anyway, enjoy. I own nothing from POK, sadly!

Sixteen-year-old Brady Parker laid wide awake in his bed. On the left side of him, his fraternal twin brother Boomer was fast asleep in his own bed. Staring at the ceiling, lost in his own thoughts, Brady could feel a warm light breeze blowing in from their balcony. It had been two days since he and Boomer had arrived on Kinkow, and in those two days, they had gone from everyday teens in Chicago to co-kings of their own paradise island.

The events from earlier that day still played in Brady's mind as laid wide awake. From the start of their coronation to the very end. Sure, the two had messed up, driving the king cruiser right into an old statue and breaking its sacred ruby that kept the island at peace….but they did fix those things, and somehow...the islanders wanted Brady and Boomer to be their kings still.

That was what kept the young royal up at three in the morning. With a heavy sigh, deciding he wasn't going actually to fall asleep anytime soon, he gets up quietly. Seeing as his brother was asleep, Brady grabbed one of his guitars and his songbook. Leaving the bedroom, he began to make his way down to the throne room quietly. Thankfully, he could be alone in the room, only one guard was there, and it was Muhama. Muhama nodded to him as he entered but didn't question his presence otherwise, which Brady was thankful for as he sat on a couch.

Muhama minded his own business, though, as Brady sat there and strummed away on his guitar. It was only a half-hour later when Muhama left for the end of his shift. Brady was completely alone and enjoyed the peace. Brady was halfway through his newly written song, one he was writing for him and his brother, when he heard footsteps approach from behind him….

"My king? What are you doing up this late?"

Turning, Brady smiles lightly when he sees it's Mikayla Makoola. The girl stood before him with a very concerned look, and it made his heart skip a beat. From the moment Brady had met the guard girl, he had become smitten with her. Of course, most people didn't know it, only Boomer was aware as far as he knew, but Brady was pretty sure he became a flirting babbling fool most of the time. Thus, he believed most were aware of his crush on the guard girl. Either way, his jamming session was pretty much over.

"Can't sleep…" Brady explains as he sighs. "...A lot on my mind. What are you doing up this late?" Brady questions in return, wondering the same thing about Mikayla.

"I'm on guard duty. I'm heading out for my night patrol." Mikayla sits down next to Brady.
"But enough about me, what's bothering you? Do you want to talk about it? We may not know one another very well yet, but you can always talk to me about anything." Mikayla finishes as she smiles softly at Brady.

With a sigh, Brady sets his guitar aside and debates whether or not to confide in her. Finally, he says, "Yeah, I mean I don't get it….Boomer and I messed up at the coronation, but the islanders still wanted us as their kings. Why?...and on top of it, this island is so different from Chicago. The new settings feel out of place." Brady explains as he sighs in relief, it was nice to get the thoughts off his shoulders.

"You and Boomer are still our kings because we believe in you and want you as our rulers," Mikayla explains as honestly as she could. "Sure, you and Boomer might not have been what we have expected, but you showed us you both have the potential to be great leaders. That's why you're still our kings even if you messed up." Mikayla adds with a wider smile. "As for the settings, I totally get it, you'll get used to it eventually, and the island will grow on you. Just give it time…" Mikayla finishes.

A silence forms around them as Brady thinks. "The first step to greatness is believing in yourself…" The quote Mason had told them the day they arrived ran through his mind along with Mikayla's words. Even though this island was not what Brady nor Boomer thought it was, it didn't mean they couldn't handle it. Growing up in Chicago, the boys had to learn how to defend themselves in high school and look out for one another. But here on Kinkow, they were co-kings, which meant they were in charge and no one could mess with them, for if they tried, Boomer and Brady could send them to the dungeon or call the guards on the bullies. Finally feeling safe in his thoughts, Brady smiles at Mikayla.

"Thanks, Mikayla; I appreciate your honesty." Brady smiles softly at her.

Nodding, she bows lightly to him. "Your welcome, my king." Mikayla states. "Just remember, even if you doubt yourself, my father and I, along with the whole kingdom, believe in you." Mikayla finishes as she stands up from her seat.

Brady nods, "Right, noted." Brady grins as he taps his head with his finger.

"Good," Mikayla states with a grin.

Mikayla goes to walk away, but before she can vanish out of the room, Brady calls out, "Hey Mikayla - " Brady begins making the guard girl stop in her tracks and turn to face him.

"Yes, my king?" Mikayla questions as she narrows her eyes at him in thought.

Brady smiles at her. " - Thank you for talking to me. It helped me a lot." Brady finishes.

With a nod, Mikayla grins widely at him. "Your welcome, my king. You can always talk to me. Now, it's late. I would get some sleep if I were you; after all, you're a king. You have duties to attend to tomorrow." Mikayla finishes with a slight bow.

"Alright, I will. Have a good night. See ya tomorrow." Brady finishes as he picks his songbook and guitar up, he heads back up to his room.

"Good night Brady, see ya tomorrow," Mikayla whispers lightly to herself as she smiles while watching the young teen disappear up the stairs. Once he was gone, she turned to go on patrol for her early morning shift…

Upon arriving at the king's room, Brady smiles as he sets his guitar and songbook back in their respective spots. Feeling much better about himself, he climbs back into bed. Looking over at his brother, he chuckles to him as Boomer snores lightly, still asleep. Looking up at the ceiling as he laid in bed, Brady felt his eyes start closing, and this time, sleep overcame him.
Maybe being kings was the best thing to ever happen to him and Boomer...
