Chapter Twelve: Standing Together

Everyone in the herd froze when they heard the sound of a wyvern's roar echoing through the canyon. The herd looked to the opening and became frightened as they waited. Suddenly, heavy footsteps could be heard at the entrance. With a hiss, Smaug walked onto the scene and could see the whole herd. A sadistic grin formed on Smaug's snout as he growled with hunger and stepped further into the canyon. He gave a few sniffs to see what all was there and hissed before growling and took a step forward. The entire herd took a step back in fear. Smaug looked to each of them and prepared to have his revenge. Sky started climbing up the wall again and shouted, "The Mudwing's led that monster right to us! Hurry, this way!"

"Yes, flee! Flee!" The wyvern shouted from his spot. He had a dark grin as he said, "Your panic will make this all the more fun for me."

Everyone in the herd started to turn and head for the wall. But Clay turned to them and shouted, "No, stop! Don't move! It's just what he wants!"

Smaug could see that fear was already taking the herd. But Clay then told them, "If we scatter, then he'll pick us off!" Turning back to the wyvern, Clay stood strong and said, "We need to stand together!"

Sky looked to the herd and noticed that no one was following his lead. With a snort and shake of his head, the Skywing continued climbing up the rock wall.

On the other side of the wall, the others had heard the commotion coming from the other side. They don't know exactly what was happening, but it didn't sound too good when they heard a wyvern howling. Dragon and Scavenger looked to each other as they wished they could see what was going on. Plio held her daughter close while her brother and father placed a comforting hand on her shoulders. Meatlug, Baylene and Toothless all watched the wall with stilled breaths.

Smaug gave another roar and the herd prepared themselves. Smaug then scratched the ground a couple of times before rushing at the herd. All the dragons in the herd looked with worry as the wyvern came closer. Smaug gave a growl and thought that victory was assured as he came closer. Deciding that enough was enough, Clay growled himself before rushing forward. He stopped a few feet before letting out his own roar and standing firm. Peril and the herd thought that Clay was crazy while Smaug came closer. The wyvern was surprised by the Mudwing's boldness and slowed down. The wyvern gave a roar back while Clay continued to roar in defiance. The two continued to roar at each other though Smaug came closer with each step. The wyvern then moved to attack Clay but was startled when Peril ran up and started roaring at him as well. Soon the others of the herd joined them and all started roaring at Smaug together. All the dragons stood side by side and remained together. Smaug was very confused by this and knew that he could at least take a few on, but all of them together would overwhelm him. The herd started walking forward while roaring and it made Smaug walk backwards. The herd was able to make Smaug back all the way down the path and continued roaring at him to let them through. Clay and Peril made sure to stay between Smaug and the herd while the others walked by. Smaug tried roaring at them to try and scare them, but it didn't work when the entire herd was able to get past him.

When they were sure that the herd was safely past the wyvern, Clay and Peril started to walk behind them. Smaug growled with hatred and watched them go. But a sound came to the wyvern and he looked to the wall. His grin returned when he saw Sky struggling to climb up the rocks. The Skywing struggled to climb as he tried to get to safety his way. Thinking that he could still make the Mudwing suffer, Smaug gave a snort and rushed for the wall again.

Peril glanced back and gasped when she saw the wyvern rushing back down the path. Knowing that her brother was still down there, Peril rushed after the wyvern to protect sky. Clay looked back and saw her running back down the path. Looking between her and the herd and knew who needed him most at the moment. With a growl, Clay chased after them as well.

The wyvern reached the bottom of the rock wall and looked up to see that Sky had made it a good ways up the wall. Smaug raised his claws up to the rocks and gripped it with his claws. Smaug strained as he hoisted himself up the rocks and chased after Sky. From the ground, Peril ran up to the wall and shouted to warn, "Sky! Behind you!"

Sky glanced back and gasped when he saw the wyvern climbing after him. Smaug growled while he pulled himself up over a rock. Sky quickly hurried to make it to the top of the wall. But when Sky stepped on a loose stone, it fell underneath him and Sky grimaced when he fell to the ground. He didn't stay on the ground for long as he got back up and kept running. But his fall allowed Smaug to close the gap between them. Peril and Clay quickly climbed up the wall to help Sky, but the climb was a little difficult. But when Sky made it to top of the wall, and though it was more flat to walk on, there wasn't much anywhere to go. Sky looked about as he came to a ledge. The Skywing looked down to the high drop and saw nothing but jagged rocks at the bottom. He looked up to the top of the canyon wall. But even though he could try climbing, his fight with Clay had weakened him. But he wasn't able to think for much longer as a hiss broke him from his thoughts. Sky looked back to see that he was trapped by the wyvern. With a shake of his head, Sky said, "No. No. This can't be the end."

Smaug growled as he came closer, "Now, I will get my revenge for my brother. And I will hurt the Mudwing by hurting you."

Sky found it a little odd for him to say that, but when he thought about it, he knew that if something were to happen to him, then Peril would be devastated and in turn would hurt Clay. And as much as he didn't like the Mudwing at the moment, Sky didn't want Peril to suffer at all. Sky glared at the wyvern as he came closer and prepared himself for a fight. Smaug snarled and came closer snarled. Then with a growl he lunged forward, but Sky was ready for him and spun around before smacked Smaug in the face with his tail. Smaug shook the cobwebs from his head and backed away for a moment. Peril and Clay quickly tried to make their way up the rocks to help Sky. Smaug growled in anger from the attack and Sky prepared himself to do it again. But when he started swinging his tail, Smaug had slammed his paw down on Sky's tail. Sky screeched in pain from it and it left him open to an attack from Smaug. Smaug then yanked Sky back with his trapped tail and used his free wing to sucker punch Sky in the face. Sky grunted in pain from the blow but retaliated by using his hind foot to kick Smaug in the chest. Smaug backed away and hissed at the Skywing. Sky hissed back and kept fighting while Peril and Clay continued to climb up the rocks. Sky then turned around and socked Smaug in the face. Smaug once again backed up and Sky came in with a slash of his talons. Blood from the wound dropped to the ground while Smaug screeched in pain. Deciding that enough was enough, Smaug then decided to fight much rougher. Jumping up into air, Smaug flapped his wings to keep him airborne for a second before maneuvering to use his back legs and tail to strike Sky in the head. The blows left Sky disoriented and Smaug dropped down onto his back. The extra weight knocked Sky off his feet. Smaug devilishly before stepping off the Skywing and then lunging his jaws forward. Sky roared in pain when he felt the wyvern's teeth sink into his back. Peril and Clay saw what was happening and moved faster. Using all his strength, Smaug was able to spin with Sky in his jaws before tossing him towards a boulder. Sky cried out in pain when his back smashed into the rock. He fell to the ground and laid on his side, feeling that his back was broken. Smaug raised his head high and gave a roar of victory before lowering himself and came closer to the fallen dragon.

Sky looked up to the wyvern with fear in his eyes as he knew that if his wounds didn't kill him, then the monster standing over him would. Smaug growled as he came closer. But before the wyvern could even finish off his downed meal, Smaug was rammed into from his left. Peril used her head to push the wyvern away from her brother. Sky watched in fear for his sister, but the pain from his back injury prevented him from getting up. Smaug was able to stand firm and used both of his hands to shove Peril back. Peril stumbled away from the wyvern, but Smaug then lunged at her with his talons outstretched and pushed her back first into a rock. Peril gritted her teeth in pain and looked in horror to the wyvern standing over her. But before Smaug could even try to harm her, Clay jumped onto the rock and turned and smacked his tail into the wyvern's face. Smaug stumbled away from Peril and Clay protectively stood over Peril. Smaug glared at Clay and hissed, "You will pay for killing my brother. Whether it be your life…" He glanced to the two other dragons and said, "Or theirs."

"You aren't going to touch them." Clay growled with his anger for Dune coming back. He dropped into a hunter's crouch and said, "And the one who's paying is you for what you did to Dune."

Then with a roar he launched himself at Smaug. But the wyvern met the Mudwing halfway by wrapping his talons around Clay's neck and twisting to throw the Mudwing on the ground. Clay gritted his teeth when his back hit the ground and looked up to the wyvern standing over him. Smaug bared his teeth and was about to strike Clay when he yelped from something tackling him from the side. Peril bit down hard on the wyvern's shoulder. Smaug screeched in pain from feeling the teeth in his flesh. Clay took the opportunity to kick Smaug in the belly with his back legs and got a few scratches in as well. Smaug stumbled off of Clay and the Mudwing rose up to his feet. He joined Peril in the attack by lunging forward and biting down on Smaug's snout. Smaug gave another screech before using his hands to shove Clay off of him. Clay tumbled along the ground while Smaug then gripped the back of Peril's neck with his right talons and gritted his teeth when he ripped her from his body. Peril cried out when Smaug tossed her away from him. She was able to keep herself from falling, but a tackle from Smaug had her against the rock again with his hands around her throat. Smaug growled in anger as he started squeezing her throat. Clay was quick to intervene by pouncing onto the wyvern's back and sinking his teeth into the back of Smaug's neck. Smaug roared in pain and backed away from Peril while trying to buck Clay off. Peril watched with worry as her friend kept his grip on his enemy. The wyvern snorted and reached around with his hand and grabbed the back of Clay's head. With a yank he ripped Clay off of him before throwing the Mudwing to the ground. Clay quickly acted by kicking Smaug in the face with his back feet and it sent the wyvern stumbling back. Smaug roared in anger while Clay rolled back to his feet. Peril tried to rise back onto her feet to help, but felt weak at the moment and cursed at it. Clay rose to his feet and glared at Smaug who glared in return. With a growl, the two launched themselves at each other and their bodies collided as they tried to push each other over. Clay was able to push the struggle into his favor by using his knee against Smaug's face. Smaug stumbled backwards and Clay followed up by balling his talons into a fist and socking the wyvern in the face. Smaug nearly fell to the ground and Clay looked to the ledge behind the wyvern. With an angry snarl, Clay started shoving the wyvern back towards the edge. Smaug tried to fight back but was shoved each time Clay used his head. But just when they were at the edge, Smaug grabbed both sides of Clay's head before headbutting him hard. The wound on Clay's forehead reopened as he fell back. Smaug went in to attack once again, but a kick in the face from Clay sent him staggering back. Smaug growled in anger and loomed over the Mudwing. Clay looked down just as the ground started to give way beneath Smaug. The ledge crumbled beneath Smaug's weight and he started to fall. But Smaug wasn't willing to go down without brining Clay with him. Smaug lunged forward and grabbed Clay's back with his teeth when the Mudwing tried to get away. Clay roared in pain and started to get dragged down, but a talon slash from Peril caused Smaug to let go. And just as Smaug fell to his doom with a roar, Peril quickly grabbed Clay's forepaws with her own to keep him from falling too. Smaug disappeared in a giant dust cloud with a bone shattering thud.

Clay and Peril both grunted as they tried to get back up on the ledge. When they were fully on the rocks, both dragons took deep breaths. They turned and looked over the edge to see what became of their foe. The dust cloud dissipated to reveal the lifeless body of Smaug. The wyvern looked to let out his roar even in death as the body laid on its side. Clay let out a sigh of relief since the threat of the wyvern brothers was over. Peril turned to her brother and said, "Sky. Oh, no."

Clay looked over as well and saw that the older Skywing was in pretty bad shape. He could tell that though while Sky was still alive, he didn't have much time left. Clay and Peril walked up to the dying Skywing and he back up at them. Peril sat next to her brother and Sky said, "Peril, I want to say that…" Though he was, his pride made it a little hard for him to say, "I'm sorry."

Peril was surprised to hear this from her brother, who was ever hardly sorry for anything. Peril then asked, "For what?"

"For all that I have put you through recently." Sky said with a sorrowful look. He took a deep breath and said, "I should have listened to you and Dune more. Maybe then we could have avoided all this."

"It's going to be alright." Peril said and lightly touched her brother's talons with her own. She tried to sound hopeful when she said, "You're going to make it."

But they all knew that it didn't look like it. Sky then said, "Peril, we both know that's not going to happen."

"Don't say that." Peril said as tears welled up in her eyes. She bit her lip before saying, "You're strong. You can make it."

"Peril, it's going to be okay." Sky said, knowing that it would be alright. He then said, "As long as you're safe, that's all that matters to me."

"Sky-" Peril tried to say. But Sky's attention focused on another behind his sister. No longer angry with him, Sky then said, "Clay."

No it was Clay's turn to be surprised. The only other time that Sky had used his actual name was when they had first met. Taking a tentative step forward, Clay looked down at Sky and waited to hear what he had to say. Sky then said, "I want to apologize to you as well."

"And I apologize for trying to take your leadership, Sky." Clay returned. But Sky slowly shook his head before saying, "No. You know a great deal of being a better leader then I could ever hope to be." His voice started to slow as he said, "I know that the herd and my sister would be in much more capable talons.

"And may I ask something of you?" Sky said as tears ran down all three dragon's faces. Clay nodded, knowing that Sky wasn't really his enemy, not fully anyway. But Clay wanted to be able to help the Skywing find peace. Sky then told him, "Please, watch out for all of them. Watch out for the herd. Watch out for Peril. I know you can do it."

"I promise. You have my word, Sky." Clay said, not even hesitating. Sky weakly smiled and he said, "Thank you, Clay. Thank you."

Then with one final breath, Sky closed his eyes and stopped moving. Peril's lip trembled and she whispered, "Sky."

She leaned forward and gently nudged her brother's snout with her own. His head only moved when she moved it, but when she moved back it fell back down. Tears rolled down her face as Peril came to terms that her brother was gone. She turned to Clay and buried her head into his shoulder. Clay wrapped his foreleg around her and pulled her in close. He gently nuzzled her head with his and she pressed the top of her head against his chin and wrapped her forelegs around him. Clay returned the embrace and the two remained sitting there for a minute. Peril sobbed for her brother and a few tears rolled down Clay's cheeks as well. When she felt like that she was good, Peril released her embrace of Clay and he did the same. The two dragons looked to each other and Clay said, "Come on. Let's go home."

Peril gave him a sad smile before casting one final glance to her brother. Taking a deep breath, she nodded, "Let's do it."

Both dragons opened their wings before rushing to the ledge into the canyon. Near the edge, they jumped and glided down to safety. When they reached the ground, they refolded their wings against their backs and started walking to catch up to the others.

It took them most of the morning and a little into the afternoon, but Clay was able to lead the herd to the caves, through the caves and they finally they saw the light at the end of the tunnel. They could hear a few insects buzzing and small birds chirping as they came closer. Everyone in the herd, except for Clay since he already saw it, looked at the splendor of the nesting grounds. Some dragons lightly growled while others squawked at the sight. But they all smiled to finally be here. Clay looked to the herd with a smile of his own and said, "Welcome home, everyone."

Some of the dragons started roaring in joy while others quickly made their way out of the caves. Soon Clay, Peril and all the dragons walked out into the valley and spread out in all directions. The Hivewing brothers stuck close to Peril as they walked with Clay. The Mudwing looked about before seeing a long neck standing over a few trees closest to the cave. Clay smiled when he could see his friends and family all waiting for them. Plio, Zini and Suri all came running up to them with Yar, Meatlug, Baylene and Toothless right behind them. When Plio saw Clay's wounds she gasped and became worried. Running up to her adopted son, Plio looked at all the new injuries and tried to keep calm as she questioned, "Clay, what happened to you?"

"Oh, just a few scrapes here and there." Clay said with a shrug of his shoulders. Plio sighed before saying, "You can be really reckless, you know that."

"Sorry, Mom." Clay said with a bow of his head. But she, Suri and Zini hugged the Mudwing and he returned it by wrapping his wings around them. He let them go and they looked to see Meatlug walking up to them and said, "Well, I'll be a Scavenger's uncle."

The four Scavengers looked to her with questioning looks. The Gronkle then said, "No offense." But the four just rolled their eyes and Meatlug then said, "But I got to give you kudos, Clay. You really came through for all of us."

"He sure did." Peril said while nudging the Mudwing. Clay only chuckled as the others joined them. Yar then commented, "Gee, Clay, looks like someone put you through the wringer."

"And I kind of feel like it too." Clay admitted. His body felt sore from the past couple of days from all the fighting and what not. Peril then said, "Come on. I'll help you treat those."

"Uh, okay." Clay said and followed Peril away from the group. The Scavengers looked to the older dragons with grins as they knew that Clay and Peril would be perfect for each other. They stayed amongst the trees and left the two dragons alone.

Author's Note: I know, I know. Cutting off this chapter just to give Clay and Peril one doesn't make much sense, but it just feels right to me. And just letting you guys know, it'll be this chapter and then the final chapter before we get really close to the ending of this story. So stay tuned for it. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
