Chapter 4 – Bad Moon Rising
Alexa's pov (Dream)
I was at a ball with Caroline she went off to talk to a blonde guy he was a better fit for her than Matt. Someone walked up to me and smiled at me, "Hello, darling. It's nice to meet you finally. I'm Kol." He said to me, kissing the back of my hand.
I blushed at him, "It's nice to meet you too, I'm Alexa." I told him.
He smirked at me, "Let's dance my raven beauty." He called me, taking me to the ballroom. I danced with him, it like the other half of me was finally here.
I woke up and Caroline walked into my room, "Morning, Stefan is gonna help me learn how to feed today. Do you want to help?" She asked me.
"Sure Care, I said I would help you." I told her.
She smiled and let me get up to get ready, I heard the front door go. Caroline looked back at me.
"Who is that?" I asked her
"Caroline? Caroline!" We heard Matt say through the door. "Hey, I thought you said you were at home. Tyler is doing this whole thing at the swimming hole and I want us to spend the day together. Where are you? Call me."
Caroline looked at me, "It will be okay, once Stefan teaches you how to feed we can go to the party and you can have a happy time with Matt." I said to her.
She nodded, I got dressed. Bonnie and Stefan arrived, I answered the door. "Hello." I said and they walked inside.
"Bonnie has a spell to make Caroline a daylight ring." Stefan said to me.
"Oh my friend from New Orleans already did that for her yesterday." I said to them.
Caroline looked and showed her hand with the ring. "Where is this friend?" Bonnie asked me.
"Davina is coming to Tyler's party later, she'll be happy to meet you." I told her.
She smiled and nodded, "Okay well, that is one step down already. Now for the hunt." Stefan told her.
"I'll be tagging along on Caroline's request." I said to him.
He nodded, Bonnie left and I picked up a bag that had a small bowgun inside. Caroline looked at me, "Relax, it's just incase you miss a bunny or something." I told her.
She nodded, "It's actually a good idea to have handy." Stefan said to her. We left for the woods.
Elena's pov
Alaric, myself and Damon arrive at Duke. "So Isobel was officially employed by the anthropology department given that most paranormal phenomenon is rooted in folklore." Alaric told me and Damon.
We arrive at an office. "Excuse me, hi. I'm Alaric Saltzman, I called earlier." He told the girl.
She nodded, "Yes, of course. I'm Vanessa Monroe, research assistant, comparative folklore." She said looking strangely at me. "Uh, let me just grab Isobel's keys."
"These are my friends Elena and Damon. I hope this isn't too much of an imposition." He said to her.
"Oh please, Isobel's office is right through there. Isobel was one of my first professors. I'm a grad student. She was brilliant, and one of the reasons I went into folklore. Uh, I have to ask - has there been any news?" She asked him.
"No, I'm afraid not." Alaric said to her.
"It's this way." She opens Isobel's office door, we follow her and entered the room. "I'll grab the light, feel free to look around. It's fascinating isn't it?" She leaves. Alaric, Damon and myself look through the room.
"Where'd she go?" Damon asked us both, Vanessa came back with a crossbow and shoots an arrow at me but Damon rushes over and puts himself in front of me to protect me. He receives the arrow in his back, grunts, and falls to the floor. Alaric catches Vanessa and pushes her against the wall, restraining her.
I was removing the arrow from Damon's back. "Pull it out. I can't reach it Elena. Just pull the damn thing out. It hurts." I remove the arrow. Damon stands up straight and shakes himself while grimacing. "That bitch is dead."
"You're not gonna kill her." I told him.
He gave a look, "Watch me." He said to me.
"You touch her and I swear I will never speak to you again." I told him.
"What makes you think that has any power over me? Because I took an arrow in the back for you? You're severely overestimating yourself." He told me.
"Right. I forgot that I was speaking to a psychotic mind who snaps and kills people impulsively. Fine, go ahead, do whatever you want." I said to him.
He looked at me, "You're trying to manipulate me."
"If by "manipulate" you mean "tell the truth" okay, guilty." I said to him. I look at him and left.
I arrive with Damon. "I'm Elena Gilbert, Isobel's daughter and a descendant of Katherine Pierce. And this is Damon Salvatore who you just shot." I said to her.
"I'd be extra nice to me right now." He told her.
"Look, we need your help okay? We need to see all of Isobel's research, anything related to Mystic Falls." I said to her. She nodded and agreed to help us both.
Alexa's pov
I was with Caroline and Stefan are in the woods, hunting. "So what I do when I see the rabbit?" she asked him.
"Chase it, catch it, feed on it." He told her.
"Isn't killing cute defenceless animals the first step in becoming a serial killer?" she asked me and Stefan.
"Not really, people hunt for food all the time Caroline, rabbits and deer's." I told her.
"Alexa is right. Well, you sort of skipped the serial killer and went straight to vampire. Caroline, if you're not serious about all of this I think you should tell me." He told her.
"No I am. Look, I swear that I am okay? But it's just...I haven't been in the sun for days and everyone is at the swimming hole having fun and Matt is there! And he finally told me that he loved me but I have been blowing him off and now you want me to eat bunnies and I'm kind of freaking out okay?!" she said to him.
Stefan and me laugh at Caroline's statement. "And now you're both laughing at me." She said to us both.
"No, no, I'm not laughing. None of this is funny, trust me. It's just that..." he said before getting cut off by her. "What?!"
"When someone becomes a vampire, all of their natural behaviours get sort of amplified." I told her.
"What do you mean?" She asked me.
"As a human I cared deeply for people, how they felt. If they were hurting I felt their pain and I felt guilty if I was the one who caused it and as a vampire all of that got...magnified." Stefan told her.
"So you're saying that now I'm basically an insecure, neurotic control freak...on crack?" She asked us both.
"Pretty much, I wouldn't have my best friend, my sister any other way." I told her.
"Well, I wasn't gonna say it like that but...hey, listen, let's hunt okay? And then after that we'll go to the swimming hole." Stefan told us both.
"Really?" She asked us both.
"Yeah. Matt & Alexa the closest connection that you have to your humanity and I think that being around him is a good thing." He told her.
She smiled, "Okay. It's true, my mum basically raised you." She said to me.
"Very true." I told her. Stefan looked at me, he was wondering what actually happened between me, Elena and the adoptive parents. I wasn't going to tell him until he asked and neither was Caroline.
Elena's pov
Vanessa is bringing a box to me, "This box checks Katherine's arrival to Mystic Falls in April 1864." She told me.
"Is that all there is about her?" I asked her.
"All that I'm aware of." She told me.
There was vervain in the box. I looked at Damon and gives some of it to Vanessa.
"Here, take this." I told her, giving her the vervain.
"Does vervain really work?" She asked me.
Damon looked at us both, "Nope, not at all." He told her.
"Can he hear us?" She asked me, I nodded.
"No, that would be creepy." He said to her.
"Can he read minds too?" She asked jokingly.
"You know, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask." He told us both.
"No, that he can't do. He is very capable of being a first rate jackass." I told her. Vanessa puts the vervain in her pocket, Damon smiled at me.
Alexa's pov
We arrived at the party as Mason was leaving, he passes next to Stefan and Caroline. He looks at Stefan and Stefan looks at him.
"Why are you looking at him with your serious vampire look?" Caroline asked him.
"My what? My "vampire serious look"?" he asked her.
I chuckled, "Hum hum. I mean it's different from your worried vampire look, neither of which stray too far from your "hey-it's-Tuesday" look." Caroline told him.
"I get it, okay. You both think I'm...you think I'm too serious. Is that it?" Stefan asked us both.
I shrugged, "I mean we're not gonna say it like that but..." She was saying and stopped, she saw Matt with Aimee from school. She walked over to Matt.
"Oh boy here we go." I muttered.
Stefan sighed, "So what's the full story with you and Elena?" he asked me.
"Well that is for me to know and for you to dot dot dot. No offense, I don't know you well enough yet to tell you that maybe ask the princess or Jeremy. I'm gonna look for Davina." I told him, walking away.
I found Davina and she gave me a drink, "Thank you." I told her. Caroline walks over to us both.
"What happened?" I asked her.
"Slutty Aimee flirting with Matt." She told me.
I hugged her, "Maybe just for today it will be best to be girls only." I told her.
Davina nodded, "I want to get to know you." Davina told Caroline.
Caroline smiled, Stefan walked over. "Hey, I saw that. You compelled her." He told us all.
"Yeah, she deserved it." She told him.
"Caroline, nobody deserves to have their mind messed with for shallow reasons." He told her.
"You know, why is everyone sticking up for Aimee freaking Bradley?" she asked us all.
"You're letting the jealousy get the best of you." Davina told her, "Our friend Josh, this happened to him." She told them both.
Caroline let out a sigh, "Oh, so now I have magnified jealousy issues, too. That's great." She said to us.
"Hey it will be fine. We helped Josh through this." I told her.
"How is he now?" Caroline asked me and Davina.
"Very happy in Paris with his boyfriend." She told her.
Stefan smiled at us both, "I told you this wasn't gonna be easy...but it gets better." He told her.
"Yeah, well, I might as well have stayed dead. My entire personality is killing me." She told us all.
We all smile at her, she shoves me lightly. "Shut up." She told me.
"Come on let's forget about the boy drama and have some fun." I told her.
"I agree." Davina said to her, Caroline nodded.
Elena's pov
Myself Damon and Alaric are still in Isobel's office, looking for information. "Any luck?" Damon asked me.
"There's nothing in here about Katherine that we don't already know." I told him.
"Ah, man, you know, it's a bummer we're not friends anymore because I could tell you what I know." He told me.
"Now who's manipulating who?" I said to him.
"Hey guys, check this out." Alaric said to me and Damon.
"There's no record of werewolf mythology in Mystic Falls, but here are some records of some of the lesser-known legends. Everything from Scandinavian skin-walkers to the Maréchal de Retz." Vanessa told me, giving me a book with drawings. "Tonartsliitsii Metslii, which roughly translates into the "curse of the sun and the moon"." She told me and Damon.
"It's Native American." Alaric said to us.
"Aztec. It explains one origin of the werewolf curse traced through Virginia. The short story: 600 years ago, the Aztecs were plagued by werewolves and vampires. They terrorized the countryside, made farming and hunting impossible until an Aztec shaman cursed them, making vampires slaves to the sun and werewolves servants of the moon. As a result, vampires could only prowl at night and werewolves could only turn on a full moon. When the full moon crests in the sky, who's ever unlucky enough to fall under the werewolf curse turns into a wolf." Vanessa said to us all.
"Can they control the transformation?" Damon asked her.
"If it were a choice, it wouldn't be called a curse. Werewolves will attack humans but instinct and centuries of rivalry have hardwired them to hunt their prey of choice: vampires." She told him.
"Well, if werewolves were hunting vampires, I would know about it." He told her.
"Not if there aren't that many werewolves left alive. Hundreds of years ago, vampires hunted them almost to extinction." She told him.
"Why would they do that?" I asked her.
"To protect themselves. Legend has it that a werewolf bite is fatal to vampires." She told us all. Alaric, myself and Damon look concerned.
"Oh..." Damon said to us all.
Alexa's pov
It's night. A full moon is shining brightly in the sky. Everybody is leaving the swimming hole because Tyler asked them to. Matt is alone. Stefan, Davina, myself and Caroline are looking at him.
"He's mad at me." She said to us all.
"Go talk to him. We'll wait." I convinced her.
Stefan's phone is ringing. He answers it: it's Elena.
"Do you think she will be okay?" Davina asked me.
I looked at her, "She's Caroline, she will be. She is a fighter." I told her.
They kissed and made up and left, Stefan walked back over to us both. "We need to find Caroline a werewolves bite is lethal to a vampire." He told us both.
I rang Caroline but no answer, "Pick up the phone, Caroline." I said to myself. "No answer, we better go and look for her." I said to them both. We went off looking for Caroline, I hope to god that she is fine and no werewolves are in Mystic Falls.
Elena's pov
I was looking in a box and finds a picture of Katherine. "Hey, have you done any research on doppelgängers?" I asked Vanessa.
"Well, the word means a lot of different things to different cultures, but typically a doppelgänger is a living, breathing double of oneself." She told me.
"Did Isobel have anything that explained the link between me and Katherine?" I asked her.
Vanessa looked at me, "That's all she had on Katherine, unfortunately, but I can tell you that doppelgängers usually torment the people they look like, trying to undo their lives. It's not exactly uplifting." She told me.
"And more things we already know. Just...I want to know why we look alike." I said to her.
"Head scratcher, isn't it?" Damon said to me.
"Do you know something, or are you just being yourself?" I asked him.
"Well, if I know anything, I'm not gonna tell you, not with that attitude." He told me.
"That's good, Damon, and this is coming from someone who wants to be my friend, but you know what? Friends don't manipulate friends, they help each other." I told him, walking away to look for any other information.
Alexa's pov
Stefan, myself and Davina looked for Caroline and Matt when he hears an animal growling. We sees Mason's car and goes toward it, noticing scratch marks on the ground. I see chains tied to the tree. Stefan looks into the car and see yellow eyes looking out. A wolf jumps through the window, falls on him and leaves.
"Okay, we need to find Caroline now." I told him.
Davina nodded, "We better hurry." She told us both.
We find Caroline, she ran over and hugged me, "I almost bit him." She whispered to me. Matt walked over to us all and we heard noise all around us.
"You and me, we're gonna run. It's going to follow us; we need to lead it away from Matt. You need to run as fast as you can. Do you understand me? Go, go!" Stefan told Caroline.
"Go, we'll be fine." Davina said to them.
Davina muttered a spell and Matt passed out, I caught him. They came back after a while and Caroline compelled Matt to forget.
"You're not going to remember what I did to you or what you saw me become." She told him.
"We were just making out in the woods." Matt said to her deadpan.
"And then an animal attacked you and bit your neck." She told him.
"It's weird; it just came out of nowhere." He said to her.
She looks at him and comes over to me, Davina and Stefan. "What are we gonna do about Tyler?" She asked Stefan.
"I took care of it and I will get Matt on vervain, it'll keep you from being able to compel him and also to keep you from drinking his blood." Stefan told her.
"I can't believe I hurt him." She said to us.
"I know." Stefan said to her, I rubbed her back.
She rested her head on my shoulder. "He is the one person on this entire planet that I never wanted to hurt." She told me.
"It's not going to get any easier. You're just gonna have to work that much harder." I told her.
"I shouldn't be with him, should I? Because if there is any danger..." she was saying when Stefan cut her off. "I'm the last person to make that kind of decision for you. If I had follow my own advice, I would walked away from Elena a long time ago." He told her.
"You ever think you should have?" she asked him.
"I know I should have, I just can't." Stefan told her and we all left the woods. Me and Davina took Caroline home.
"Do you want to stay over?" Caroline asked Davina.
Davina nodded, "Come on, us girls got to stick together after all." I told them both.
Caroline nodded and we walked inside. We were in my room for a while then Caroline sneaked out into her room to sleep. "Hey she'll be okay, let get some rest it's been a long day, wolves are a nightmare." Davina told me.
I nodded, "Very true." I said to her.
Caroline's pov
I was at a ball with Alexa and I walked off to find my date. I found him and smiled, "Hello, love." He said to me.
I blushed, "Hello, Nik." I said to him. He took my hand and kissed the back of it. He took me to the ballroom, Alexa was dancing with a guy and she was happy for once.
I woke up, Elena was there. "Elena?" I asked her.
"Nope, try again." She told me.
I looked at her again, "Katherine." I said to her.
Katherine sits down on my bed. I move away from her. "Don't be frightened. We're going to have so much fun together." She said smiling at me.
A/N – hope you all enjoyed this chapter, going to be writing a couple more chapters going back to the UK on Nov 3rd currently in China so I want a lot done before going back so I can just upload them whenever.
