Chapter Fourteen: Welcoming the Next Generation

One year later…

Zini was running towards the lake, frustrated to know that he was really late. Today was the day that Clay and Peril's children were supposed to hatch. Zini had promised his adopted nephew that he would be there, but he had slept in a little longer this morning. He was passing by the tunnel when he could hear sounds coming from inside. Zini slowed his running and looked into the darkness. What he saw come out shocked him. A female Scavenger wearing white pelt came walking out of the cave and were slightly blinded by the sunlight.

Zini was taken in by her beauty. There were a few other Scavengers with them, wearing different colored pelts. The girl noticed Zini and she too became smitten by the blonde Scavenger. The two walked over to each other and Zini took a moment before saying, "Hi, I'm Zini."

"Hi, I'm Lora." She said with a grin. Zini then said, "So, what brings a gal to a place like this."

"We came here cause we were forced from our old home." Lora explained. Zini felt for her and said, "I feel for you. Me and my family were forced from our homes as well."

"Do you think we'll be able to stay?" Lora asked with hope. Zini then said, "I'm sure that the leader won't mind. But we should ask him just in case."

"Okay." Lora said and gestured for her Clan to follow Zini. Inside, Zini felt excited for the family since it's been a while since they last saw any other Scavengers. Zini felt someone take his hand into theirs. Looking to his left, he saw Lora looking back at him with a smile. Zini smiled back as they continued walking.

Over by the lake side, a nest of eggs sat in a circle, though one of the eggs sat in the middle. A Mudwing muzzle leaned down and gently nudged the egg in the middle. When Clay raised his head back up, he looked to Peril who just looked to him with a smile as well. Meatlug rushed over and smiled as she said, "Move over, everybody. Brining in babies is what I can do best."

Her, Baylene, Toothless, Yar, Plio, Suri and the Hivewing brothers all gathered around to see. Yar glanced to the Gronkle and joked, "I would say that it's been a few years since you've hatched an egg."

Both Yar and Meatlug started laughing. Meatlug then shot back, "You're right, Yar, so how about you let me practice on your head."

Yar just huffed and rolled his eyes. Plio rolled her eyes as well before glancing down at the nest. She saw the egg in the middle starting to shake and said, "Oh, Look! Someone wants to meet you."

A part of the shell cracked open and the baby pushed out a little. Plio reached down and gently took the shell tip with her hands. Then lifting up the egg shell piece Plio looked inside. When she saw the little one inside, she felt her heart melting and said, "Ohh!" Clay tried looking around his adopted mother as Plio then said, "Aren't you just the sweetest little small fry that I ever did see?"

She moved out of the way and Clay was able to see his firstborn son. He smiled and said, "Hey there, little guy." He smiled when he said, "He looks a lot like me." Then he glanced to Peril and said, "With a bit of his mother's scale coloring too."

Peril chuckled before looking to her son and said, "Meet your dad, my boy." She then joked, "He's not as crazy as he looks."

Clay gave a somewhat crazed smile and the baby dragon cooed while trying to get out of his egg. Meatlug took in a deep breath and said, "Ohh. Oh, such a happy day."

The baby dragonet gave a sneeze and Baylene said, "Well done, little one."

"Come here, you little rascal." Yar said as he removed the baby from its egg. Holding him up in his arms, the old Scavenger then said, "Now let me get a good look at you."

The baby then let out another adorable sneeze and Yar chuckled from it. Glancing back to his adopted grandson he said, "Yep. You sure are your father's son, all right."

Suri started laughing while Yar handed the boy to Plio. The two Hivewing brothers came closer and sniffed the little dragon who cooed with a smile. A yell from Zini caused everyone to look up, "Hey, you guys!"

They were surprised to see Zini holding the hand of another Scavenger as they ran towards the nest. Zini then shouted, "Look what I found! New neighbors!"

Clay and his family were really surprised to see the clan of Scavengers walking up behind the two. Zini and Lora stopped a few feet from the nest and then asked, "If it's okay with you, Clay."

"I don't see why not." Clay said, knowing that things were really looking up for Dragon and Scavenger alike. Looking to Lora he said, "Welcome to your new home."

"Thank you, Clay." Lora said with a bow of her head. Zini looked to her and asked, "So, Lora. Do you have a man, per se?"

"Nope." Lora smiled while shaking her head. Zini then said, "You wanna-"

But his question was interrupted when Lora pulled him in for a kiss. Zini returned it and held Lora close. Everyone by the nest started laughing. Clay then raised his head and let loose a roar. He looked to each of his friends and family with a smile before letting loose another roar. Suri followed up with a war cry as did her mother and grandfather. The Hivewing brothers also gave their roars before Meatlug and Toothless roared in happiness as well. Baylene lifted her long neck high before letting out a big roar. The rest of the herd started roaring as well while looking over their nests and the newly hatching baby dragons. Lots of little dragons started running by the nests and had fun as they ran by.

Plio: None of us really know what changes, big or small, lie ahead for us.

One thing is for certain, our journey's not over yet…

The little dragons stopped by the lake side and continued to play with each other.

Plio: We can only hope that in small way, whether by myth or truth…

Our time here will be remembered.

Author's Note: Well, this was fun to write, but now it's over, except that there's the Ending Titles to consider. But basically, the main story is done. And hopefully, when I write the next one, whether it be WOF that has series characters or OCs, I'll be sure to include more of backstories. I'll also try to remember to do it in the next story. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
