I'm a disaster and changed my mind about how I'm posting things!
For the most recent additions, go about halfway down. Italics are Roses thoughts. Enjoy!
Rose, being a Ravenclaw and her mother's daughter, does not take her rushed thoughts in the bathroom as a cause for immediate panic. She needs to look a little harder before she starts that. As she walks back to her dorm room, she thinks about what she knows.
She had sex with Scorpius about six weeks ago. More specific, you have to look at it from every angle. Forty days ago to be exact. She had her last period two weeks before school started. Rose reaches the statue to the Ravenclaw common room and answer the riddle with little focus. She rushes up to her dorm, grabs some parchment and a quill and starts writing things down.
They came to school on the Hogwarts express on September 1st, which was a Thursday. Two weeks before that would have been the week of August 14th. That was when she had last had her menses. The first quidditch match between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw had been two days following, September 3rd; the teams had come back to school two weeks prior to start training for the early season. So, the Ravenclaw victory party had been that night, which was when she slept with Scorpius. She writes down the dates as she thinks.
Rose should have gotten her period again on the week of September 11th. It was currently October 18th. She was way past late. She had noticed it when she missed it. However, she had attributed it to stress. Stress from homework and upcoming NEWTs and sleeping with her best mate. She had missed before because of stress. In fact, it had happened frequently the past four years. The irregular cycle alone was no reason to panic.
Rose thought more though about her increased appetite and stomach issues. Her nausea was not confined to the mornings, but she knew the term "morning sickness" was inaccurate and that the sickness could come at any time of day. She had seen proof of that when her Aunt Audrey was pregnant with her cousin Lucy and she was sick all day long. However, it was not uncommon for her anxiety about school to cause changes to her eating habits.
Had anything else been different? Were there any other indicators? Rose had noticed some tenderness in her breasts, but had attributed this to needing new undergarments.
All of these things alone might be a coincidence, but together, they could indicate something else entirely.
Stay calm. Don't rush to a conclusion. You've thought about the facts and have formed a hypothesis. Now test it. What options do you have? Pick the most logical.
Rose wrote her options on the parchment.
She could go to the library and find a book with a pregnancy detector charm. Find a private place, perform the charm. This ran the risk of someone seeing her with a book with such a charm or questions from Madam Patil if she tried to check out such a book.
She could wait until the next Hogsmeade trip to get a book or go to the apothecary for a test. However, this would mean waiting another three weeks. She couldn't wait that long to find out. Her nerves wouldn't be able to take it.
A third option came to mind. Rose knew her cousin Roxie kept muggle pregnancy tests in her trunk for "just in case". She had a scare back in her fourth year and again last year, so she kept them around to make sure she was covered. She might question Rose's reasons for needing such a test, but Rose could certainly think up a good enough lie to direct her attention elsewhere.
Roxie was her most logical option.
OoOoO
Rose burns the parchment she wrote her thoughts on and makes her way up to the Gryffindor common room, quickly bypassing the fat lady with a muttered "Pumpkin Tart." Rose was always current with the Gryffindor password since almost her entire family was in the house.
When she enters the common room, Rose notices Hugo leaning back in an overstuffed armchair in the far corner of the room. There's a book in his lap, but he's not reading it. Instead, he staring across the room with a dark look on his face. His arms are crossed over his chest.
"Hey, Hugo," Rose says, approaching him. He grunts at her in greeting. Rose follows his gaze to see his focus is on Gianna Thomas and Lysander Scamander, who are giggling with each other in sweet and obviously flirty manner. "Ah, girl troubles I see. Don't worry about all that. Lysander will be on to someone new next week I'm sure, and she'll free for you to try and woo."
Hugo keeps his eyes fixed on them and mutters something under his breath that sounds like "Stupid slag."
Rose sighs. "Have you seen Roxie?" Hugo nods his head towards the girls' dormitories. Rose pats her brother on the shoulder and rushes up the stairs.
Luckily, Roxanne is the only sixth year in the dorm at the moment. She is sprawled across her bed reading the newest issue of Witch Weekly and painting her fingernails. She looks up at Rose and smiles.
"Hello, lovely. What's up?"
"I've got a bit of a problem," Rose tells her.
"I'm good at solving those. What do you need?"
"Well, it's not so much what I need as what my friend…" Rose reaches in her mind desperately for a name, but comes up blank "…who wishes to stay anonymous, needs." Roxie nods for Rose to continue. "Well, this friend of mine has a… boyfriend… and they got a little drunk and one thing led to another and they, well… you know…"
"Course I know, Rosie," Roxie gives Rose a wink, "Nothing wrong with that."
"Well, she's pretty sure they didn't use protection, and now, she missed her period, and she's really worried that she might be…"
"Say no more," Roxie says, popping off her bed to rummage delicately in the trunk at the end of it, trying to keep her new polish from smudging. After a bit of digging, she pulls out a box containing a muggle pregnancy test. She hands it to Rose with a smile. "I hope things go okay for your friend."
"Yeah, thanks. She would have come herself but, she was very nervous."
"Of course," Roxie says, nodding her head sympathetically.
"Well, I better go deliver this to her. Let's cross our fingers," Rose says with a forced smile. "See you later," she calls over her shoulder and thanks Merlin for lies and trusting cousins.
Rose hides the box under her robes and leaves the Gryffindor common rooms. She stops for a moment and ponders her next step. She needs to find Scorpius. He may have gotten her into this, so he was going to have to help her get through it.
OoOoO
Rose finds Scorpius in the Slytherin common room. She knows how to get in there too because of him and Al. He's sitting alone and reading silently. "I need to talk to you, Scor."
"'Bout what Rosie?" he drawls as he continues to read.
"I'm late!" Rose pitches her voice low.
Scorpius still doesn't look up from his book. "Late for what?"
Rose grabs his arm and starts pulling until he abandons his book and allows her to drag him out into the dungeon corridor. She keeps dragging until they get to an empty classroom.
"Scorpius, I'm late for my menses. My period. That kind of late," Rose hisses at him.
"Well that's unfortunate," Scorpius says, starting to make towards the door to head back to the common room. "I hope you get back on track with that."
"No," Rose says, grabbing his arm and spinning him around to face her. "You don't get it. Why don't you get it? I'm late. I can't stop eating. I'm throwing up and nauseous all the time." She lowers her voice to a whisper, even though there was no one to hear, "My tits hurt! I've looked at all of the information and I think I might be-" She gestures frantically in front of her.
Scorpius' eyes finally show comprehension. "Oh."
"Yeah," Rose mutters.
They stand and stare at anything but each other.
"No." Scorpius says suddenly.
"No?" Rose asks.
"No. I used a charm," he says with relief.
"Really?" Rose says, perking up a little. "I don't remember that."
Scorpius smirks, "You don't remember any of it."
"Which could be remedied if you shared your memories with-"
"How many times do I have to tell you. No!"
"How do you even remember? You were really drunk too."
"No I wa-" he suddenly stops. "Maybe you're right, maybe I'm misremembering."
"Urgh!" Rose exclaims, grabbing his arm. "Just come with me. I want to take a pregnancy test."
OoOoO
"You're going to pee on a stick?"
"Yes."
"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
"Shut it, Scor," Rose mutters, casting another aguamenti into the cup she had transfigured from a towel.
They were standing in the girls' bathroom on the second floor, which also acted as home to the ghost Moaning Myrtle. Rose was chugging water and trying to explain muggle pregnancy tests to Scorpius.
"Why can't we just do this the magic way?" Scorpius sighs.
"Do you know the pregnancy detector charm?" Rose asks him.
"No."
"You really should by now with all the girls you see," Rose says scowling. Scorpius flips her off. "Do you really want to explain to Madam Patil why you're checking out a book on pregnancy charms?"
Scorpius sighs. Rose downs another cup of water.
"How did you get one of those muggle things anyway?"
"I cannot divulge my sources," Rose mutters drinking another cup. She didn't want to add a fuel to the fire of a rumor that Roxie slagged around.
"Don't you have to piss yet?"
"No. Be patient." Rose drinks another glass.
Scorpius rocks back and forth on the balls of his feet. Rose drinks another three cups.
"How about now?"
"Scorpius, if you're going to keep asking stupid questions, you might as well leave."
Scorpius looks at the floor. Silence for a few more minutes. Four more cups.
"Rosie, you know I'd never leave you alone to do this, right?"
Rose isn't sure if he's talking about the pregnancy test or the baby situation itself. She doesn't ask.
"I wouldn't blame you if you did," she sights.
"Well I wouldn't. I won't. If you are… pregnant… we'll figure it."
Rose gives him a tight smile. "I have to piss."
She goes into a stall while Scorpius fidgets outside the door. After peeing on the muggle contraption, Rose leaves the stall to stand with Scorpius.
"What does it say?" he asks.
"I don't know yet. It takes two minutes to process."
"Two whole minutes? We have to wait two minutes?"
"Maybe two and a half."
Scorpius grabs his hair and mutters a string of curses.
"Rosie, I'm gonna go mental waiting. We should have done this the magic way. Even if it meant having an awkward conversation with Madam Patil. At least I wouldn't have to go through the agony of waiting."
"Oh, stop being so melodramatic," Rose breathes, hitting him on the arm. He grabs his arm and pretends he's wounded. Rose rolls her eyes.
Scorpius starts to rock on his heels again.
"Knock it off, Scor. You're freaking me out."
Scorpius stops rocking and starts pacing.
"I swear to Merlin, Scorpius, you are going to make me have an aneurysm before I even get to find out whether I'm pregnant or not."
"I'm sorry," he barks, "I'm just nervous."
"I know," Rose says with a sigh, "me too."
They stand in an awkward silence.
"Rose, I-"
"Shut up!" Rose almost shouts. "It's changing colors."
The stick turns pink.
"What does that mean?" Scorpius asks.
"Fuck," Rose shuts her eyes.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"What are we going to do?"
"Well," Rose says, still looking at the pink sign, "We're going to get rid of it of course."
"Of course," Scorpius repeats with what must be relief.
"I mean," Rose says, her mouth a tight line, "it's the only logical thing to do. We may be seventeen but we are nowhere near mature enough to take care of a baby. We're not even out of school yet."
"Yeah," Scorpius mutters.
"Don't act so down, Scorpius; this'll all be over after the next Hogsmeade trip. I'll stop at the apothecary and get the potion. All our problems will be over."
As they start to leave the bathroom, Rose thinks she hears Scorpius whisper, "Not all of them."
OoOoO
Rose had heard that pregnancy brings people together. She thinks that is utter hippogriff dung.
She and Scorpius were not a couple, so maybe that was why things were so wonky with them. But the pregnancy had put an extreme strain on their friendship. They still sat next to each other in classes and ate together at mealtimes, but they couldn't make eye contact and only spoke to each other when absolutely necessary. Other than class and meals, Rose and Scorpius stopped spending their spare time together. The past week had been torture.
Rose, as a result, had taken to spending more time with her family, most often her cousin Albus, who was her closest friend beside Scorpius. Al was the son of Rose's Aunt Ginny and Harry Potter himself. Al was not quite what one would expect from Harry Potter's child. Where his siblings James and Lily were popular and multitalented, Al was more on the shy side. He wasn't very good at magic and his grades suffered as a result. His good looks and skills as a chaser kept him from obscurity, but of all the Weasley-Potter brood, he was the least well known. And he didn't seem to mind it at all.
Rose always enjoyed his presence, as it was very calming and quiet, but she was not used to spending much time with him alone. Scorpius was with her at almost all times and his constant drone of jokes and observations filled in all the silences with Albus. Now there was only empty space and Rose was not adjusting well.
Her mind was almost always on the Hogsmeade trip coming up and her stomach was in anxious knots thinking about it. This combined with her morning sickness and hormones were making it difficult to focus on much of anything else. She couldn't talk about it with Al. For one, because she couldn't tell him about the pregnancy. But also, Al was never very good at listening or providing a shoulder to cry on. Even if she could tell him her worries without fully disclosing what they were really about, he wouldn't be any help.
Rose had considered trying to spend more time with other family members, but she couldn't think of anyone else who would be helpful to the situation. Rose was usually the one her cousins approached for advice, because of her level head and Ravenclaw smarts. She couldn't imagine any of them being remotely helpful to her situation. Aside from Roxie, but Rose could not bring herself to tell the real root of her issues with Scorpius to anyone.
OoOoO
Rose Weasley heaves. Potions class is not the place to be when you're pregnant. The fumes did awful things to her stomach. She was trying to hold her hair away from her face, with no luck. As a result there was vomit in some of the strands. Rose stays crouched on the floor of the loo until she is confident her stomach is empty. She stands and exits the stall to splash water on her face and rinse her mouth.
Rose takes in her reflection. She looks ill. There's vomit in her hair and some on her uniform sweater. Her face is splotchy from just being sick. Dark circles are under her eyes and the skin on her face looks pulled. She had definitely lost weight from being sick all the time.
Rose quickly cast a scourgify to her hair before pulling it up into a high pony. She closes her eyes for a moment and takes three deep breaths, steeling herself for returning to class. She should get back before Professor Nott sends anyone to check on her.
She opens the bathroom door to find an extremely pale Scorpius standing there, looking as though he was about to enter the loo. They stare at each other for what feels like close to a minute.
"Were you sick?" he asks, stepping towards her. As he does she takes a step back so he can join her in the bathroom.
"Yeah. The vapors were getting to me."
"I see," Scorpius says. He notices the sick on her sweater and scourgifies it away, before looking down at his feet and shoving his hands in his pockets. Rose knows this means that he's nervous. It's not often that one finds Scorpius Malfoy in such a mood.
"So-" Rose begins, not really sure what she is going to say, when he cuts her off.
"How are you?" he blurts out.
"I'm fine," Rose tells him looking at her feet.
"Rose," he says, with a little bite to his tone. She finally looks up at him and sees his face is serious.
"Alright, I'm pretty awful," Rose tells him truthfully, feeling suddenly like she might cry. "I feel sick all the time, I can't stop thinking about going to Hogsmeade, and we're not talking. I don't know what to do. My emotions are a wreck and I'm so tired."
Scorpius rushes forward and catches her in a hug. She's surprised at first, but quickly hugs him back. They stay like that for a long while.
"You're so skinny, Rosie," he says into her hair. "You've lost weight."
"I know, I think it's a combination of the nerves and the vomiting."
"I'm sorry," he tells her, pulling away from their embrace. Rose isn't entirely sure what he's apologizing for. For her feeling sick? Losing weight? For not talking like the normally did? For getting her pregnant?
"Yeah, me too," she says back. She's certainly sorry for all of it. They stand in awkward silence for a few more agonizing moments.
"Should be getting back to class, huh?" Rose says.
"Yes, I suppose we should," Scorpius mutters, giving a little smile. Rose brushes past him and rushes down the hall.
The tears feel closer to falling. She scrubs at her face as she makes her way back to class, somehow feeling worse than she had when she was vomiting in the bathroom. She notices Scorpius has taken long strides to catch up to her and is now walking beside her. When they reach the door, she goes to open it, but he puts a hand out to keep it closed.
"Rose," he says, turning her face so she'll look at him. "I'm here for you, alright? I don't know how I'm supposed to act or what I can say or do to help you. But I am here for you."
Rose reaches up to cover his hand on her face. "Thanks."
