Chapter 31: Thy Will Be Done On Earth

"Well Katniss, shall we fight to the death?" Gale asked.

"No. I won't kill you Gale. We have enough blood on our hands. I'm tired of fighting for President Snow and the Capitol's amusement." Katniss snapped, with a careless shrug.

"I'm ready to die Katniss," Gale said, quietly.

"What?!" Katniss almost screamed.

"Let me finish," Gale continued. "I'm ready to die, if it means you get to live."

He was dead serious. She could see it his eyes. She was surprised. She didn't think Gale cared about her that much. He hid it well. Why now? Why did they have to literally be on the chopping block, for him to show his true feelings for her?

He could tell that so many thoughts were going through her head at the moment. He thought of his family for a moment, and bit back this frustration. He loved Katniss, and this proved it. He didn't want President Snow to see it, because he knew that it would be used against him. However, he had hope that he was choosing right. He was choosing her life over his. Whatever President Snow did now no longer mattered. He fidgeted with his cross, and smiled to himself. He had the greatest hope in the world, and love on his side. He was going to die spreading them both, and slapping Snow in the face at the same time.

"Well, now we know how those guys died." Gale nodded toward the large gathering of wolves approaching them.

Katniss grabbed her bow, but Gale's stern look made her drop it. Now she was really confused. Gale stood up, struggling at first, and then stretched. The wolves stopped for a moment, anticipating an attack. Gale put his hand up in surrender. They began moving on. Gale took one last look at Katniss.

"I love you Katniss."

Katniss' heart almost burst out of her chest, that's how fast it was beating. She pulled him back onto the ground. He looked up at her, confused. She was on her knees, with her hands clasped together. He understood. He scrambled to his knees and they both began to pray at the same time:

"Our Father, in Heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

On Earth, as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from all evil.
