A piercing ringing suddenly broke out in the dormitory, awakening Sirius with a startle. The dreadful noise bounced around the room until Remus finally shut it off. "Sorry about that" he said apologetically "dad bought it for me new, I didn't realize how loud it would be"
"At least we know it works" came James' muffled voice from across the room.
Remus turned slightly red and he started fumbling with the clock.

Sirius rubbed his eyes as he sat up in bed, the bright morning sunshine was already creeping in through a gap in the curtain and the sky outside was a deep ocean blue coated with white fluffy clouds. Remus made his bed and left to shower, leaving the others remaining motionless under their blankets. Today was the first day of classes and Sirius couldn't wait to start learning how to use magic. Lazily, he dragged himself out of bed and made his way to the bathroom. Even though it was only made for five boys the bathroom was quite spacious, in the middle of the room was a giant shower faucet that branched out over five small cubicles. On one of the walls stood three toilet cubicles which were opposite a long counter holding three sinks, above the sinks the wall was covered by a long mirror which was steamed up from Remus's shower. The back wall was a lined with large shelves holding various fluffy towels and bath potions.

Once he was showered and dressed, he and Remus left for the great hall whilst Peter and James were slowly dragging themselves out of bed. When they had sat down at the Gryffindor table Sirius loaded his plate with hot scrambled eggs and bacon. Just as he picked up is fork Remus handed him a piece of parchment. "what's this? "Sirius asked taking it from him and turning it over in his hands.
"Our schedule" Remus replied filling his own plate with a single slice of buttered toast "looks like we have double charms first with Professor Flitwick. That should be fun." James and Peter soon joined them and loaded their plates full of steaming food, they got to talking about which classes they were most looking forward and which ones they thought would be boring like history of magic.

After they had all cleared their plates, they shoved their time tables into their pockets and started heading to charms, they had just made it outside the great hall when they realized that they didn't know where they were going. "Maybe we should ask someone" Remus suggested as he said looking around for an older student to ask. Once they had gotten the directions from a rather annoyed looking Hufflepuff boy they were on their way to their first class. The charms professor was a short wizard who had to stand on high stack of books to be able to see the class over his desk. As the last of the students took their seats, he began to explain what they would be learning in the upcoming weeks.

"Good morning students, welcome to your first charms lesson, I am Professor Flitwick and I can't wait to learn all of your names" he looked around the classroom with a beaming smile" The first charm we will be learning is Wingardium Leviosa, the charm that makes objects fly. However, before we start learning how to cast this spell, we are going to cover some basic theory to help us" as he said this the smiles around the class faded. Sirius had expected to be learning magic straight away, he hadn't anticipated the amount of work that went into casting. They got out their supplies and began copying down what Flitwick was writing on the chalk board, they had to do this for all their classes; every teacher had told them about the rules they were expected to follow and the areas they would be studying in their first term.

After a long day of lessons, Sirius and James made their way back to Gryffindor tower. As soon as they entered the common room, Sirius flopped down into one of the big squishy armchairs in front of the fire, the chairs were so worn in that the indents people had left behind over the years hugged Sirius' body comfortably. His first day had been interesting and he couldn't wait until they started using magic but all day something had been sitting at the back of his mind, he couldn't help thinking about how his parents would react when they found out that he had been sorted into Gryffindor. His whole family had been in Slytherin before him and he knew that his parents were expecting him to follow this tradition. He began to get writing supplies out of his bag; he would send them a letter.

Dear mother and father,
My journey to Hogwarts was quite enjoyable, I met a boy called James and we played exploding snap the whole ride there and ate lots of sweets. The other boys in my dormitory are very quiet but they seem okay. As you have probably already heard I was sorted into Gryffindor not Slytherin. I know that's not what you would've hoped for but I'm happy and I hope you are too. Please tell Reg that I will send him a letter at the end of the week and that I miss him dearly.
P. S Could you send another pot of ink, James spilled almost my whole pot in History of magic.
-Sirius

After re-reading the letter over a few times he slid it into an envelope and stamped it shut before addressing it. It would be best to take it to the owlery now because then he could go straight to the Great Hall for dinner. The owlery floor was covered in a mix of owl droppings and hay, hundreds of owls perched on pedestals covered every inch of the walls. He found school owl, once Sirius had stroked it'd head a few times, and attached his letter to its leg, once he had let go of the owl it took off and flew out the window. After he had watched the owl shrink as it flew away, he started to make his way down to the great hall. He had almost reached the bottom of the owlery stairs when he bumped into a tall Slytherin girl with bright platinum hair, she dropped her letters and they landed scattered all over the floor.

"Watch where you are going you horrible... Sirius?" As she had looked up from picking up her letters Sirius could see her face, it was his cousin Narcissa. "My farther had told me that he thought was staring Hogwarts this year, why didn't I see you in the common room?" As she said this, she noticed the red and gold tie around his neck and looked at him with a look of disgust on her face. "Gryffindor eh? Bet your mum loved that you freak, I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't kick you out. You're not a proper Black" She gave Sirius a final cold look and proceeded up the owlery staircase.

Sirius now felt a sinking feeling in his stomach, of course his parents would be mad; his whole family had been in Slytherin for decades and he had gone and screwed it up. Reluctantly he made his way to the Great hall, he didn't think he would be able to eat anything without being sick.
