E: Escape
Gwen rubbed her eyes as she tried to supress yet another yawn threatening to spill from her strawberry glossed lips.
The fans on the ceiling hummed gently and the lights flickered off the murky brown walls.
When grandpa had asked the 12 year old if she wanted to help out with plumber work, she immediately said yes. Despite complaining about the summer that had occurred 2 years prior, she had actually begun to miss the excitement.
Ben had taken off the omnitrix a few months ago and things could not have been duller since.
Now he was at summer school and she was here, bored out-of her mind.
She sighed, her eyes glancing between the clock and the glitchy screen in front of her.
2 more hours to go she thought.
Surveillance duty of the null void should have been fun. If not something she could do practically, atleast she could watch the inmates have it out. But her job was to watch over the teleporter chamber. No one was around that area.
Once in a while a some plumber would appear and communicate through the microphone to let them back. She would flip the metallic switch on her end and transport them to the teleporation pod on her right.
She closed her eyes for a few minutes, hoping it would make the time move faster, but it didn't. Time seemed to have barely moved. She stared at clock, wondering if it was broken.
The agenda was to talk to grandpa today, this wasn't something she wanted to do the rest of the summer.
She quite surprised however, when her attention back to the screen.
She could make out a boy, not much older than her, wearing clothes that were way too old and hair grown way too wild.
A human? Since when do humans get imprisoned to the null void?
He seemed to be searching for something in a panic.
He looked around when his eyes landed on the security camera.
Gwen gulped. She knew those eyes, how could she ever forget.
Those eyes haunted her every night, filling her body with guilt.
The boy looked away and continued to do whatever he had set out to while Gwen leaned back in her seat.
She had never come to terms with how things had ended with Kevin. Despite everything that had gone down, kevin didn't deserve punishment, he deserved help.
He was a kid, all alone in the world. She couldn't imagine the horrors he must have gone through, on the streets, when passing through space and now the null void.
Her initial reactions were always fear and infuriation when she thought about him. But over time, the only emotion that stayed was guilt.
Atleast he was human now, she thought, trying to make the situation better in her head.
She stared at the screen, at the boy who had now sat down against one of the walls breathing heavily.
Grabbing the rusty microphone, she spoke.
"Kevin?"
The boy looked startled, jumping up and looking around for the source of the voice.
He grabbed his head and shook it slightly " great, now I'm really going insane"
Gwen just rolled her eyes and tried again.
"Kevin? I'm speaking through the telecom. Please stand on the blue platform"
He didn't move. He had come so far from his jail, lost so much on the way. He wasn't going to risk getting caught now.
" Kevin please trust me. the guard is going to show up in the next 10 minutes and if he sees you, he's gonna drag you prison 1736."
" and who are you exactly? And why do you want help me?" He yelled annoyed.
She went quiet. If he knew who she really was , he would never listen to her.
" all you need to know is that you could stand there and get caught or you could risk it and get out. Your choice."
She nervously tapped her fingers across the table as he thought over it, hoping he would do what she wanted.
Seeing as he had no other option, the raven haired boy sighed. He wanted out and back to his world. The world of blue skies and fresh air. Back to his home.
He stepped on the platform and gwen smiled. She flipped the switch, causing a beam of light to flood through the chamber and engulf the 13 year-old.
xoxoxo
Kevin opened his eyes to a dark room. He stepped out of the pod cautiously, absorbing a bit of the metal on the side , ready for whatever awaited him.
"Kevin?"
His head snapped to the left.
In front stood the redhead in a pink tank top and cargo shorts, fumbling her fingers nervously.
She had gotten him out, yes, but she hadn't really thought about the consequences. Would he still try to kill her cousin?
Kevin stared at her till it all started coming back to him.
She noticed his eyes slowly widening, but she didn't have time to explain. He needed to get out before someone saw him.
She quickly turned to her table, grabbed some biscuit packets and cash from her wallet and shoved it at him.
" hey you're Tenny..."
"No time, you need to leave before someone sees you okay? Use the fire exit behind you, it'll lead you straight out."
Kevin just stared confused. He didn't know what to feel. Happy ? Angry? Annoyed? He was out , but at what cost?
He looked down at the things that were pushed into his hands.
What was going on?
" look if this is some kind of ..."
Heavy footsteps interrupted before he could continue. They were getting louder with every step, signalling they were getting closer to their location.
Gwen started panicking.
" run"
He didn't know what to do, all he knew was that he was out of that miserable place.
He turned but before he could make a break for it, a small hand grabbed his forearm.
He shifted to see big emerald eyes staring at him, so full of hope, of sincerity.
He softened a bit.
" please don't make me regret this"
He didn't say anything. She let go and he ran.
Not long after, a grey haired man popped into the room.
" everything alright in here pumpkin, i thought I heard someone " grandpa max asked, his eyes wandering to catch something, or someone.
"Everythings fine grandpa, don't worry about it"
She collapsed in her seat and let go of the breath she didn't even know she was holding.
" Is it okay if I leave early though? I'm really tired."
Xoxoxoxoxoox
She walked out of the plumber base , hoping to catch a glimpse of the obsidian eyed boy , but he was long gone.
But for the first time since forever, gwen finally had a peaceful slumber that night.
