It was thanksgiving night in National city and Alex Danvers was having a nice visit with her parents, Dinner went off without a hitch, the three enjoyed a nice dinner at Alex's apartment, a nice one bedroom apartment she lived in alone despite her mother's encouragement to date Alex never had any interest in that side of her life. After dinner her parents hung around a little bit before they returned to their hotel to get some rest. Alex was excited to have a night off and to get caught up on some of her favorite shows, what she did not expect was to turn towards the kitchen and to have the man in the bright blue and red cape to be waiting outside her window. After a second of staring at him through the glass she opened the window and invited him in "Superman, w-what are you doing here?" She asked curiously sounding rattled that the man showed up out of nowhere.
Superman ether didn't notice the confusion or he just paid no mind to it. "I'm here to ask for your help agent Danvers." He paused watching her gasp that he knew her name "I have reason to believe the DEO, and more specifically Hank Henshaw doesn't operate how they say they do, instead of arresting dangerous aliens they go and take every alien they can and throw them In a cell, I've seen them arrest children, last week Director Henshaw arrested a professor who's only crime on earth was being an alien. This is getting ridiculous and I need help stopping it because I can't do it myself." He finished giving Alex a chance to process what he'd said.
After a minute or two of thought Alex came to a realization, Superman had earned enough trust for her to believe him, but if it was true, does that mean Hank was dirty? She turned to him giving a grimace "If what you suggest is true, that means I'm working for a monster doesn't it?" She asked curiously wanting to understand his position. Then something occurred to her "you're superman, why don't you just bust these people out? Why come to someone you don't know, it would take a pretty inflated ego to think I would just take your word over the man who took a chance on me." She explained in an honest tone
Superman gave a sigh seeing how the news effected her, she was conflicted he knew. Alex had a good heart so she could sympathize with the aliens who come to earth seeking a better life for their family, but Hank was the one who practically saved her life when she was in a very dark place two years prior. He knew how hard it was but he also knew he needed her and he couldn't sugarcoat anything "Alex I'm sorry, Hank is a big leader in the 'human first' movement. If it were up to him I wouldn't be free, he does a lot of what he does in secret using the power he's accumulated to hurt Aliens that are just trying to live their lives. Everyone has the right to live, as long as they don't actively hurt others then race shouldn't matter." He explained to which Alex nodded slowly showing she did agree with that at least "I believe he has someone who's very important to me, I'm coming to get her out but I can't do that cleanly without your help Alex." He finished which also caught the woman off guard. "As for why I'm coming to you, I know your father well, Jeremiah is a good man so I feel o can trust his daughter with this." He finished his
Alex didn't know what to say, her parents were always proud she followed in their footsteps and became a woman of science, which was true for a little bit before being recruited to become a government agent. Alex wasn't a normal Biologist like they believed, rather she worked as a secret agent for the top secret government organization known as the DEO that is tasked with rounding up the rogue aliens that escaped from fort Rozz. She had been with this organization for 2 years and had helped Director Hank Henshaw bring countless dangerous aliens to justice. But In all that time she'd spent she didn't know exactly what kind of man HankHenshaw was. And if she agreed to the super's plan she might not be available to host next thanksgiving.
"Listen, I know this is far fetched, but just do research. Go find out if there are any Kryptonian's being held in that facility, have a talk with her you'll see she doesn't belong in a cell." He instructed before taking off out the window leaving her once again alone with her thoughts.
Hank Henshaw hated aliens more than anything, in his eyes they were lesser beings who were there to steal earth. Some aliens did cause problems so the DEO was a necessity but Hank had grown into someone who enjoyed the power he had and enjoyed even more using it where he didn't need to. Exhibit A was the time he found a lost Kryptonian child and instead of involving the lone Kryptonian on earth(who Hank despised with all his being), he chose to lock her away.
The next morning Alex woke up and met with her parents for breakfast before they would go back to Midvale "Hey Dad, can you ask something?" She asked curiously to only a risen eyebrow from him insinuating she should continue "Last night I had a visit from a friend of yours, he wears a cape and fights crime in metropolis." She explained to which he seemed to become more intrigued with where she was heading "Do you know a man named Hank Henshaw?" She asked curiously sounding nervous knowing she had to come clean about her work now for this conversation to really help.
Jeremiah became noticeably stiff when his daughter mentioned Hank, he knew the man well and thoroughly disliked everything about him. He was all for protecting citizens from rogue aliens but ever since he attacked and almost killed an innocent Martian back on a mission Jeremiah accompanied them on it was impossible for the man to earn his respect. But he knew now he had to put those emotions aside to help his daughter "Yes I do, why do you ask?" He asked curiously before a realization hit him "You're not a scientist are you?" He asked curiously which certainly caught her off guard "Hank Henshaw is the director of the DEO, I'm not stupid Alex do you work for him?" He asked curiously before musing outloud "I told your mother those Karate lessons would lead to trouble." He commented more as a joke than anything else to help her ease a little tension she didn't even know she was carrying.
Hearing the joke she did ease back into the booth where she sat "Yes I do, I've been working for him for 2 years and up until now I've always been confident he was a good man. But Superman showed up, he said he knew you and knew he could trust me. Then he went on to say that Hank is some kind of anti alien racist and I don't know what to think. I can't imagine a literal superhero would make that up, but I can't separate myself from my respect for Hank to look subjectively at the situation. What do I do?" She asked curiously as she noticed Jeremiah thinking intently on her issue.
He took a deep breath and let his hands lay on the table "Listen, I don't trust Hank Henshaw. I'm not going to tell you what decision to make you're a big girl Alex you can make those choices. But I will say we did our best when raising you to always teach you to follow your heart and right k no ow I think that's the best thing you can do. Move around smartly and do research and then use that information to make the decision your heart pushes you to make. How's that? Still give good advice?" He asked curiously
He would see a more content smile appear on her face before she simply replied with "the best." In a joyful tone and hugged him. Eliza returned in time to see the hug with a smile as Alex's phone rang "Alex Danvers, oh, yes sir today I took a personal day. Well I thought it would be acceptable since I've been with you two years and haven't once. Right, yes sir I'm finishing a personal matter and I'll be in soon." With that she hung up and gave a sigh "Follow my heart." She repeated receiving a reassuring nod from her father while her mother seemed slightly confused but she chocked it up to whatever they had discussed while she was in the bathroom. "We should get going right? I'll get the check." She replied before beginning to stand and move back towards the counter, this was a habit for Alex to always pay for her parents when she was able, with that advice being done the trio left the diner with Alex walking her parents to the airport. Once their goodbyes were said Alex immediately left to go back down to the DEO headquarters, if Hank was dirty she would get to the bottom of it.
It was 5:30, Alex had told Hank not to expect her until 7:30 so it left her two hours to do some investigating. First thing she did was type the key word 'Kryptonian' in the prisoner logs "I didn't think it would be that easy. Let's see, he gave me a description, maybe if I…" she was suddenly interrupted when a door nearby swung open.
"Agent Danvers, you're early, why are you going through the prisoner logs?" Hank asked curiously wondering why she would be concerned about that, he knew there were prisoners she didn't know about but they weren't on the log so that wasn't a concern to him.
She got past her quick anxiety and turned back to him "Director Henshaw, I wasn't expecting to see you so soon. Oh yes, I had a question to ask that Caluan we arrested last week and I couldn't remember his cell number." Alex explained taking a mental sigh of relief when her answer seemed to suffice.
Hank sighed and turned to walk away "Cell 4202 down on the 4th floor below, don't take up too much of the aliens time, it has a meeting with the governor of our province. Caluan's are known for their intellect and this one is willing to discuss a deal to help our government. I disagree and think we should leave it to rot down there but it's not my decision to make unfortunately." He finished explaining before leaving to work on their database monitoring for activity.
Alex knew what she had to do, Hank would keep anything suspicious off their records she would simply have to go blindly searching for this girl, the one who seemed so special to Superman. She took the elevator arriving from the top, this one was known to hold more of their non threatening prisoners. Cell after cell floor after floor Alex was searching for the full two hours before she finally happened upon a cell that caught her attention, what she noticed about it was the mysterious green glow that emanated from the glass, she hadn't seen anything like it. The other thing she noticed was the fact a sickly looking young woman laid on the ground with her back facing the glass. 'This must be her, the lost Kryptonian Superman spoke of. She looks awful, should I speak to her?' She thought to herself unsure of what to say until the woman spoke and broke the silence making it known she knew the woman was there.
The Kryptonian was in a weak almost lifeless state she couldn't have been older than 18. When Alex walked into the room where her cell was she spoke "What is it human? Did I do something wrong again? Going to turn my kryptonite up more? Inflict more pain on me? I won't break, I refuse to give in to such cruelty." She explained sounding both bitter and proud, bitter towards the human race and far too proud of her own people to give in. As she spoke it became clear to Alex this girl was who Superman was looking for.
Rather than turn it up Alex used her passcode(that surprisingly worked) to override the system and turn off the kryptonite waves "Is that better? I don't believe in hurting my prisoners." She explained as the young Kryptonian became noticeably more comfortable.
She turned back noting how the girl was about her age "So what? Am I supposed to drop to my knees and praise you?" The blonde questioned showing a clear lack of respect to which Alex wasn't surprised given the hell she'd been subjected to for lord knows how long.
When Alex looked her in the eye she could see how low her hope was. Rather than answer her sarcasm she sat crosslegged facing the window that was her cage "Are you Kara Zor-El?" She asked curiously only for the girl to raise an eyebrow and nod suspiciously "your cousin sent me. My name is Alex and I'm here to help you. He explained to me what director Henshaw was doing to you guys, I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but even a Kryptonian can't break this type of glass so the kryptonite was overkill just to cause pain and helplessness. Any man who unnecessarily hurts other beings isn't a man I can in good conscience work for." She finished giving the other girl a chance to think.
Kara's eyes became suspicious when her name was mentioned but slightly more optimistic at the mention of her cousin "So you're going to let me out? Just like that?" She asked curiously showing hope for the first time since Alex had entered.
"Well first I think I need to make some preparations. If I let you out you'll be a fugitive. I think I can convince them you escaped but we need to do it right and make sure you have a safe space to stay, so… wait just a little longer for me, okay?" She asked curiously seeing the woman slump back against the wall clearly not happy but she did understand the reasoning behind her waiting, so with reluctance she gave a nod. "I know you've lost a lot, I'm sorry this is happening but I promise everything will be okay." She assured her before turning to exit the cell, her attention was caught by another nearby cell that read 'Martian Manhunter' on the manifest, this intrigued Alex so she chose to pay them a visit.
The tall green man was seated in his cell meditating when she entered, he had gotten very good at ignoring the humans whenever they entered however he could almost immediately tell she was different. Without a word she locked the door and sat back to meditate with the Martian, nobody had done that before. After a few minutes his eyes opened "You know, for a human you show great discipline. I'll admit my knowledge of your race isn't the highest but I've never known one of your kind to meditate like that. He explained in a more respectful tone than the one Kara had used, of course he wasn't under much duress like she was.
Alex sat up and gave a nod "My parents were both scientists that would sometimes work into the morning. I'm used to being alone with my thoughts." She explained trying to give a small smile "I'm Alex by the way, Alex Danvers. It's an honor to meet a Martian." She explained with a small smile.
Her name made his eyes open wider "You know, the first human I met was named Danvers. Jeremiah, he's the only reason I have any hope for humanity after everything we've been subject to." He explained watching her tilt her head "Jeremiah was the first human I Met here, I saved him from a beast he tried to convince your boss I wasn't a threat it wasn't successful obviously, but he tried his best and I do understand what the consequences of going against orders are. I am J'onn J'onzz, the last green Martian." He finished his explanation before he stood and went back to the little cot in the back of his cell.
Alex listened intently to everything he had to say, it seemed the martians were as wise as she'd imagined them to be. When her father was mentioned she couldn't help but sigh "I'm sorry, I know it can't do you much but it's all I can offer." She explained catching a curious look "Jeremiah Danvers is my father, it's hard to think he spent the energy trying to free you for me to work as a driving force toward keeping you here. But, I promise for what it's worth humans aren't all bad. I thought Henshaw was one of the good ones but apparently I was wrong. There are those who think our rights should apply to aliens, but many scoff at the idea that some of you come in peace. I'm going to do my best to free you legally, then if that doesn't work I'll do what I have to do to free you." She finished showing pure remorse in her tone.
The Martian's powers were weak but strangely he could still feel a connection to this girl, when she said Jeremiah was her dad it made sense but it wasn't just that. "Alex was it? You don't have to apologize, in fact I would prefer if you didn't. What's happened to me and these other aliens isn't your fault as I stated I know about following orders. And besides, what happened in the past can't be Changed, right now however you are aware of the injustices we face. I understand the difficult position you're in but right now you have the knowledge and opportunity to change our fate, do you have the will act on it?" He asked curiously catching her by surprise with how diplomatic he was being around a person responsible for holding him captive.
Alex knew what she had to do. It wouldn't be easy, but she knew the person above Henshaw, they wouldn't approve of living creatures being treated this way. She had to help them and the first step was meeting the Director of Alien affairs for the US government.
I know it's a bit strange and slow but this is kind of just to establish a few key story points, Kara Alex and J'onn have never met at this point. Because Jeremiah didn't attack Hank neither died and Jeremiah left the DEO as soon as he could. Winn James and Cat all are still at Catco with the majority of their lives unchanged. This was sort of a spur of the moment type of idea without much planning involved.
Also just a bit of an update, if you've read my stories previously I promise I haven't abandoned them! I love where they were going I've just been dealing with a lot of mental health issues this year and I've lacked much of the motivation to write. At the moment I'm going through a rewrite of those stories fixing a few things and changing the story a little to make the read cleaner and push the chapters to be longer. If you enjoyed please drop a review and let me know what you think! Do you enjoy this type of AU story? If so why? How do you think Alex would have changed over the years without her goofy alien sister around? I think their relationship is so cute!
