A few more days had past and Alex found herself waist high in bills. It seemed Kara could eat more than her weight and her bad habit of breaking things(unintentionally) made the bills stack up even more. She'd already had her dishes replaced three times. But Alex was determined never the less to find a plan for the newly formed sisters. Her apartment was big enough for both of them at the moment but she hoped Kara would have her apartment sooner rather than later. Of course she could send her to college before but she wasn't sure when or if the girl would be ready for that. It's not like Alex didn't want her around, but she wanted a human life and Alex had to make that happen for her.

"You know... you don't have to be so stressed all the time, it's gonna be alright." Came the sudden voice of Kara as it became clear she'd just woken up.

Alex turned back towards the bed where she sat up "Easy for you to say, your new sister isn't an alien." She commented as Kara's face seemed to drop "I'm happy you're here, and I didn't mean anything by that." She promised seeing her beginning to get up "Anyway, it's… 8:30? What has you up this early?" She asked curiously as Kara seemed to park up at her continuous questioning.

She got to her feet and answered "Back on krypton I was always… what do you call it? A morning person? That continued into my time in the cell. And it continues now. When the sun is up I'm up!" She exclaimed happily as she seemed to take notice of how tense Alex seemed to be "Hey… maybe you could use a break from this, wanna go for a walk? Maybe visit one of your human parks? I still haven't seen many." She added trying to keep her smile genuine hoping Alex wouldn't feel more stressed.

Alex sighed slightly "It's just a park, not a human park, remember the whole purpose of this is to have you living amongst us as a human woman." She explained before the eagerness of her sister's nod brought a smile to her face "And I wish I could, unfortunately I have to go for a little trip upstate for work." She explained as she shut her laptop and turned to her "Promise to be on your best behavior? Or should I call a babysitter?" She asked curiously as Kara rolled her eyes, Alex was kidding about calling a babysitter but she did doubt how her sister could handle being alone.

"You know I am an adult right?" She asked curiously raising an eyebrow as Alex seemed to take that in for a second before answering.

Alex sighed as she stood up "An adult who just got spanked the other day because she wouldn't clean up after herself." She commented reminding Kara she'd been spanked now multiple times in only a few days. "I only worry because I love you, know that?" She asked curiously as Kara got over her blushing and took the chance to quickly hug her before Alex could leave.

Kara couldn't deny the fact she felt overwhelmingly nervous at the idea of watching the only family she had walk out the door "Promise to come back?" She asked in a pitiful way as she held the hug a little longer.

Alex returned the hug, letting a hand rub her sisters back "I promise. Nothing is bff owing to keep me from coming back to you." She promised as they broke the hug and Alex left to go get on her flight.

The next thing she knew everything happened in a blur. Kara went from seeing a news story of a plane headed out of state on a collision course that could spell catastrophic damage for everyone involved. Suddenly she was in the sky bursting in the direction of said plane, Alex was on there she could, no, she HAD to help. She couldn't lose the only family she had like that.

Like a seasoned pro she gripped the wing and help maneuver it into the bay outside national city. Kara couldn't help herself but to bask Kara couldn't help herself but to bask in the spotlight for the moment before she sped off into the sky once more before she sped back to her sisters apartment "Oh… oh no that just happened… Alex is going to be so mad! W-what am I gonna do she's going to be so mad!" She exclaimed as the mystique of her save had worn off already letting reality set in for her.

Once the plane was settled and everyone was safe Alex rushed back home faster than she would care to admit, so many thoughts racing through her mind. So many life's were saved today, was her anger she currently felt towards her sister justified? Was it fair? Could she truly condemn her actions given the reasoning and results that followed them? Slowly as the drive continued her mind was calming itself down, she ceased being the least bit angry or frustrated, rather she felt pride, pride in her little sister, the girl might have just saved a lot of lives.

As the door opened Kara's anxiety was lowered and she breathed a sigh of relief when Alex when Alex entered the apartment with a smile "I'm glad you're okay." She commented happily, by now the sun had set leaving the sky pitch black.

Alex returned the hug enjoying once again the feeling of getting to hold her sister again "At first I was angry, but I think now I'm feeling… relieved? I don't know if that's the right word, but you got in and out without much attention being drawn to you, I'm actually proud." She replied with a smile as she kissed the top of her head.

Kara broke the embrace looking to her feet for a second before back to her sisters eyes, she gave a small smile "Th-thanks, I'm just glad you're okay… but listen, what if, and just hear me out… what if I start helping like my cousin does, I know I can I just need you to have faith in m-" she was suddenly cut off by a more serious expression from her sister.

Alex turned her head slightly "And why do you think that's a good idea? A. You can't control your powers well. B. You're practically a kid. And C. The entire point of this was to live as a human and to have a normal life. I refuse to let you do something I know will be detrimental to you, I'm sorry Kara but my answer is no." She explained in a huff as she'd unknowingly begun to pace the room with her hands running through her hair. Kara seemed a bit dejected but chose to not argue her point any farther, deciding that Alex could be right and she could be in a better situation if she chose to hide out as a human for awhile.

The next morning Kara woke feeling a little bit down, maybe it was the superhero thing or the idea of almost losing her sister or the high of saving the day having worn off but she just wasn't feeling herself.

She slowly climbed out of her bed moving towards the living room where Alex was waiting. "You don't look so good, feel sick?" She asked curiously as Kara gave a small sigh and shook her head.

"I'm just feeling a little blue today, usually my spirits a bright yellow but right now it's a dark blue." She explained with a sigh as she fell back on the bed laying her head on her sisters lap. When Alex offered an optimistic look, like she'd be willing to help her "Maybe a trip to a human park might help?" She asked with a slight puppy dog look.

"First, it's just a park, not a human park don't forget. But if that's what you want, I suppose it couldn't hurt. Just don't shake hands play with any babies or pet any puppies, you don't know your own strength yet, got it?" She asked in a firm tone.

Kara let out a groan but nodded "I understand, if it means I can see the sunshine I'll avoid physical contact with everyone." She promised with an eager smile on her face as she stood up straight happily smiling still.

"If we plan to go anywhere, shouldn't you change? Not sure if the world is eager to see your pajamas." She commented pointing to the bag over on the chair "I went out when you fell asleep last night and got you some stuff, clothes mostly. Try some on?" She asked curiously as Kara beamed at the thought of Alex making time to do that for her.

Kara seemed to almost bounce over to the bag, her energy from what Alex had noticed was always high. Out of the outfits that she'd chosen one in particular daughter her attention, it was a blue and yellow dress that reached to about her knee level "I love it!" She exclaimed happily as she rushed to hug her sister feeling extreme gratitude towards the women who'd given her so much already.

Once they left the small apartment Kara was like a little kid going on her first adventure, excitedly taking in all the sights and sounds of the big city as they neared a park Alex specifically had chosen for its close proximity to her home and its lack of foot traffic in the mornings. Once they made it Alex sat on a bench and watched as Kara went on a small adventure around the little grass filled space "Just stay where I can see you, I don't trust this place with you right now." She explained as Kara nodded swiftly. Truth be told Kara was a lot brighter than her bubbly kiddish attitude showed, but humoring her new sister couldn't hurt. She wandered off for the moment deciding to go on a walk but holding true to where her sister could see her. What Alex didn't expect was for a middle aged gentleman to sit beside her "Can I help you?" She asked curiously feeling slightly uncomfortable.

He smiled slightly in her direction "You actually can, I'm here to take that alien off your hands." He explained turning towards Kara as Alex gasped in response to that.

"I don't know who sent you here and I don't care, she's my family now and she's not going anywhere." She spoke firm as if the other man wasn't much bigger than her.

He smirked to himself and stood up, lifting his coat to show his weapon of choice which was essentially a super powered axe "I'm not asking." He explained as he began to make strides in the direction of Kara, Alex was at a loss, she didn't have her weapon she could defend her sister right now so she did what she knew she had to do.

"Kara!" She exclaimed making moves to be between the two, if it meant she would die, still she intended on protecting her sister no matter what.

The man wasn't amused, he drew his weapon and went to swing for her neck, what he didn't expect was for it to stop mid swing before he was sent flying across the park. When the dust settled from the altercation Kara was standing between the two with a fist extended in his direction "Hands off my sister." She spoke with venom behind each word, it seemed as protective over her Alex was, she was going to be just the same over her big sister.

The man seemed to be not the least bit amused, mostly because of the fact it actually hurt, her, and untrained woman dealt pain to him. That was something he couldn't tolerate. 'She said take her in alive, nothing against causing some pain her way.' He thought to himself as he rose to his feet.

Kara looked back at Alex "He's after me, I can fly well enough to lead him away from the city but it won't exactly go well with the whole 'fitting in thing.' Then again neither will fighting him. What should I do?" She asked curiously as he seemed to be ready to strike.

Alex took in the situation, Kara had done so well up to this point with not letting her powers show but this simply couldn't be avoided. They stood face to face with an alien who seemed to be more than a pushover, and in public of all places. "Whatever you have to do, I don't care, just protect yourself." She instructed as Kara seemed to be slightly eased by the 'whatever you have to do' part.

She turned back to face the now charging alien, his axe was glowing it seemed to be more than meets the eye "Evacuate the park if you can, this is going to be harder than the mind controlling alien I can tell that much already." She explained as Alex nodded and took out her FBI badge beginning to lead family's family's away from the battle scene. When she was within striking distance he swung his axe aiming for her side, attempting to catch the blade in her hand she gasped in pain and jumped back "Ugh, that thing burns." She told herself looming at her scorched hand she blinked her eyes lightly launching a beam from her eyes he simply held the axe up and blocked it, what was worse was the fact it seemed to be making the axe's blade burn hotter to the point it might cut through her skin.

"That attack won't work on me you brat, just make it easy on yourself, I don't desire to hurt your 'sister' so if you come quietly I won't. If you don't then after I'm finished here, I'm going to kill her." He promised as he swung the axe aiming to knock her feet out from under her. He did just that but she simply took to the sky landing a few feet away from him.

She took a deep breath "I'm a Kryptonian, I don't give into threats my race is too proud for that. I would rather knock some sense into you and then go on with my day." She spoke firmly as she charged towards him, she went to land a kick, she was shocked when he blocked it and went to swipe it her with the axe, he easily could have ended the fight there but right before he made contact he stopped. This allowed her enough time to land a kick and escape his grasp. Once she'd escaped she noted how little effect her attack had on the other alien. He charged again swiping the axe this time connecting with her side, she flipped out of control flying through a tree "Agh!" She exclaimed with a hand going to the spot the blade connected with. He seemed satisfied with that little bit of damage as he put his weapon away and approached her ready to take her away. Before he could reach her she used the rest of her strength to get a hold of Alex and disappear. Where to? The DEO was her only hope of staying hidden long enough to recuperate.

When they landed Alex did her best to lift the injured Kryptonian up, she made quick strides down hallway after hallway ending up at the med bay "Help! I need help!" She exclaimed as Kara set on the table.

For Kara as she laid in place on the table the pain wasn't new to her, it was something she was used to at this point but the shame she felt wasn't. She'd lost. Handily too. She couldn't even make eye contact with Alex as the events of the fight played back in her mind. She couldn't do a damn thing to stop him, luckily unbeknownst yo them when they left the man saw no need to hurt any other humans, whether he was called away or he left of his own volition, he left the park unharmed and went back to business working to find the girl.

The next thing she knew everything was a blur as her head hit the hard metal of the table "What did you just do!" She heard Alex exclaim as her eyes settled on the form of who she assumed to be a doctor along with Director Henshaw before the room went black.

"I gave her something to sleep, what's happening next is going to be extremely painful. From the looks of it the wound is deep and even has some shards from her enemy's weapon. Whatever it was possessed enough raw power to cause some real damage but her tough skin didn't let it go without some trouble." He explained honestly.

Later when Kara eventually woke up she felt strange, she didn't exactly feel good as new but the gash in her side had been bandaged up, she still felt drowsy from whatever medicine was given to her, when her vision settled in her eyes set on the form of her approaching sister "D-did anyone else get hurt?" She asked nervously as Alex pulled her in for as tight a hug as she could give.

"Thanks to you, nobody else did. He almost killed me Kara. I stare death in the face everyday but I've not been that close to it in a long time. You saved my life I'm eternally grateful to you." She explained as she broke the embrace.

"About that…" she trailed off looking away as she sat up "Whatifihelppeoplelikemycousin!" She exclaimed speaking almost too fast to understand. When Alex seemed confused by Kara's statement she reiterated "I-I was just thinking… you know I'm not a kid, I can handle myself… would it be okay if I started using my powers to help people? Like Kal does… and well like you do too. I wanna be like you Alex, I wanna be able to feel better about myself knowing the world is better with me here." She explained in an honest tone.

Could Kara read minds? That very thought had been on Alex's mind the previous night, except instead of the world she wondered if Kara was better off. She couldn't argue the one simple fact, Kara had the power to help people. She knew it would come eventually so she asked the first question that popped into her mind "Do you feel you're ready?" She asked curiously tilting her head slightly.

Kara gave a tooth filled smile and nodded enthusiastically "I really do! I have the power and I'm learning to control it more each day, I want to help people and I feel like now is the right time for that." She explained as she went to sit up, it seemed her muscles were beginning to get back to normal as she moved to put her feet on the ground.

Alex still stayed beside her "Listen Kara, you can do amazing things but I'm going to ask one more time, really think about this, are you ready?" She asked curiously as it became clear to Kara how serious she was, the woman took a moment in thought before giving a nod "I'll trust your judgment, we'll get to work tonight on a makeshift resume for you to start working, I want you to have something other than saving national city in front of you." She explained honestly as she helped the girl to her feet "How's that sound?" She asked curiously patting the top of her head.

Kara gave her a curious look "What's an assistant?" She asked curiously surprising her older sister as the two began to move back down the hallway and Alex would begin to sign her out making sure Hank knew what was going on.

Her question was slightly confusing before Alex realized something "You've reading the paper after me, huh?" She asked curiously, when Kara nodded she continued "An assistant is someone a boss depends on, they get them coffee make appointments for them arrange rides and services among other things. If you're thinking about the position for Catco magazine, yes I saw that too, you're not a good fit for her. It's my understanding Cat is ruthless cunning and brutal, not good for my little sister if you ask me." She explained honestly as Kara thought for a moment before reluctantly nodding. Truth be told she thought she could do the job but she wasn't ready to begin questioning her sister.

Next the pair left the building Alex turned to her sister "Listen, he's still going to be looking for you, so for the moment let's lay low okay? If he decides he wants to cause public trouble you can intervene but for now I want you to recover, got it?" She asked curiously as Kara nodded.

When the car started going Alex turned on the radio to get another add for the popular Catco magazine, it seemed her need for an assistant was true "You know I really think I could do it." She commented causing Alex to raise an eyebrow "What, I can't make coffee?" She asked curiously remembering Alex teaching her.

Alex rolled her eyes "It's not the coffee part I'm worried about. Did you know she made her last assistant cry when she quit?" She asked curiously as Kara's head tilted wondering where that information was coming from but she reminded undeterred.

Kara gave a small sigh as she looked out the window before turning back to her "Well we do have to find as something for me to do right? Why not try it?" She asked curiously.

Alex soon stopped back at their apartment "If this is really what you want, I can put together a good background to get you the job, but be warned, it won't be easy." She warned as she unbuckled, soon they were both on the walk back inside.

"I don't expect anything to be easy, I think the first step is always the hardest." She explained honestly as they entered the apartment she fell flat on her bed ready for the next wave of adventures she knew was just around the corner.

((Thank you for supporting this story! This chapter wasn't one of my best I've written but I think it's a good establishing chapter. As always I love to hear feedback! I'll respond to some reviews below!

Jennifer – thanks! This one was a bit longer so I hope it's good!

Ludy – I love their connection as well!

Another idea I've recently been playing with I'd love some feedback on, essentially Kara is much younger than Alex. Maybe 12-15 for Kara and 21-25 for Alex. Alex and Maggie are in a serious relationship when Eliza Danvers suddenly falls ill it leaves Alex and Maggie as the new guardians for a young alien girl.

Let me know what you think of that little idea I had!
