.The world, for a brief moment, changed. Before, its future was one that had a happy ending for many people, an ending that was bright and glorious. However, despite what many believe the Fates to be, they can only guide and manipulate to threads of life - humans and demigods can still affect those threads with their agency. The gods don't dare to move against the threads in fear of what may happen, but humans with their small lifespan don't care about that. This story should've ended with the guy getting the girl, the repentant traitors becoming good again, and the evils vanquished.

The world, after that brief moment, changed irrevocably.

Prologue

Perseus Jackson dreamt of that one night, the night that his life changed forever. The night when his mother died.

Sally Jackson was a cheerful woman, a woman who could stand against the evils and still come out with a smile on her face that could lift anybody's face up. She loved Percy without any motive, and Percy knew that. She managed to live with a vile scumbag named Gabe Ugliano - his name even sounded dirty - and still managed to help Percy. Her brown hair flowed softly slightly below her shoulders, her startling blue eyes accenting her beautiful face. Percy could never understand why she was married to a man who, in all lack of respect, looked like a hag. His small, peeping eyes looked maliciously at anyone who crossed his ire, and oily, thinning light brown hair dropped to where his jaw should be. His pockmarked face was accented by a disgustingly thick nose, which was made all the worse by his greenish pallor. He was an overweight man, made all the uglier for it with his sagging belly, the double chin, and thick arms. Ugliano was a vile man - a man who lived to put others down, a man that was the very incarnation of Greed, Sloth, and Jealousy, who somehow managed to get a hold of a woman who shined with Hope, Love, and Beauty.

At least, until the accident.

After then, Perseus only responded to Perseus - being called 'Percy' reminded him too much of his mother. Ugliano had once said that there was no such thing as blue food - so his mother started cooking blue foods. Once she died, Perseus could still claim that blue was his favorite color, but could never look at it because of the constant reminder of his mother.

Ugliano was not the model role father - but at least he sent Perseus away to boarding schools so that Perseus never had to see him most of the year. Even during the summer months, he had Perseus work a summer job - "If you're going to live with me, boy, then you better well work for it!" - so he only had to deal with the mostly drunken gambler every night. The mornings were free because of the massive hangover that Ugliano sported no matter what. The monster of a man didn't care about anything other than his beer and his poker games - he still got checks from the department store that he was the manager for somehow, and even that wasn't enough for him to get off of his ass.

Not that Perseus ever saw the money, much less the checks. Perseus had basically no free time, as his days were spent studying, working, or at the library. His dyslexia and ADHD made it so that it was extremely difficult for him to learn and read from books, but he was a stubborn kid. In his second grade, Perseus learned how to read despite his dyslexia and was able to comprehend college-level books - not that he ever let Ugliano find out about that. In class, his ADHD used to make him one of the rowdiest, but after a specific teaching that Ugliano taught him, Perseus increased his patience.

It has been said that a person with ADHD couldn't sit still for more than three seconds - Percy proved that wrong as he slowly sat still for longer and longer, eventually being able to sit still for an entire class period without being distracted. The other kids at his other schools used to taunt and belittle Perseus; but once Perseus realized that it was giving him a nasty reputation, he worked to calm himself down.

Percy was a lovable, excitable, and somewhat thickheaded kid who wouldn't back down from any fight that challenged his honor or the honor of someone innocent. Perseus was a cold, calculating, intelligent young man who cared only for himself and those that would directly affect him.

A force not bound by the Fates though, thought that he was beginning to become a bit predictable, and that wasn't very fun to watch at all, was it?
