Mitchie lounged in her room, looking through her contacts, debating on reaching out to Shane. She knew she left things at a weird spot between the two. But this was Mitchie trying. Trying to do good and be different.
Her overdose was a wake up call, that she shouldn't take advantage of the life her parents were able to provide for her. Her cyberbullying episode almost took her out of this life and that's not a place she'd like to revisit.
Living her new life in the new town is exactly what she needed. She got a new phone, along with a new number. She wanted a fresh start which started with deleting all the toxic from her life. Social media was the first thing to go. Her connection to her old friends stayed at a minimum.
Mitchie will be going back to school after the holidays, make some friends and try to survive the rest of her junior year. And it'll make things easier if she had people on her side. Caitlyn was her best friend at this point. The rest of the group were trying to get on her good side, but they understood her hesitation.
Mitchie was waiting for Caitlyn to show up to her house so she could do her hair and make up. She sighed as it was still early in the morning. She decided to go downstairs for a cup of coffee.
"Hi, how are you feeling today?" Connie asked.
"Good." Mitchie said, grabbing a mug from the cupboard.
"Keeping up with your medication?" Steve said not looking up from the paper.
"Yes." Mitchie said.
Her parents were driving her to her therapist office and staying in the lobby so they knew she was keeping up like she promised she would.
The air was thick with tension, Connie was more than okay with giving her more freedom, it was taking Steve more time than Mitchie would've given him credit for. Mitchie was sipping on her coffee and looking between both her parents, wishing she could get it through their heads that she was okay. She had no plans of overdosing or playing with drugs ever again.
But time will tell and trust will be regained.
The doorbell rang, Mitchie set hre mug down and rushed to the door. Caitlyn was smiling, holding onto her backpack full of her makeup and shoes, holding the zipped up bag holding her dress. Her oversized sweater and tights combo screamed comfy. Mitchie looked down and saw her identical outfit.
Her dad's UCLA sweater had become one of her favorites, her UGGs were starting to get a little uncomfortable due to the september hot mornings.
"Come in." Mitchie said, opening the door wide, "do you need help?"
"Nope! Your room or closet room?"
Mitchie laughed, blushing lightly. She was privileged.
"Closet, there's a bigger vanity and my stuff is all in there. Want anything to drink?"
"No thanks!"
The girls climbed up the stairs taking two at a time, laughing and chit chatting the whole way up.
Caitlyn was somewhat familiar with her home, due to the fact that she was the only one her parents allowed over to the house. Mitchie tried to get Shane on that list, but her dad denied it. Mitchie still hasn't come clean about who sold her the drugs. And she will never.
Last she heard of Devin, he had moved to Washington, to live with his grandparents. He was shaken up, never having one of clients almost over dose because of a bad batch. Devin didn't consider her a client, more like a friend and it hurt him even more. He tried to go to the hospital but didn't have a way in, and didn't really have an explanation why he was there.
Mitchie wished she had a proper goodbye with Devin but she was grateful for him getting out when he did and starting fresh.
"So what look are you hoping I can achieve," Mitchie asked playing with Caitlyn's make up bag.
"Smokey eye with glitter? I don't know I don't do the whole makeup thing."
"I can see." Mitchie gawking at the make up. She wasn't used to the brands Caitlyn had.
"Hey, I don't wear it often, and we're limited here."
"Hold on a second." Mitchie said going into her bathroom.
She was humming along to the music playing softly in the background. Mitchie knew there was a bag of brand new makeup, somewhere. Connie had a lot of friends in the makeup industry and some of her old school friends had parents also in the industry. So they received a lot of brand make up, some stuff Mitchie never cared for, or forgot and accumulated over time.
"Ah ha!" Mitchie yelled finding the storage bin she was looking for.
"I have these things, we can use it if you want." Mitchie showed Caitlyn.
Caitlyn's eyes widened, "I couldn't."
"Please, take them from my hands." Mitchie laughed.
Caitlyn laughed and shrugged, sitting back as Mitchie began to work on her face. Mitchie had been around big parties, and make-up artists since she was twelve, so she picked up on things. She wasn't a professional but she knew how to blend eyeshadow pretty good. Unlike most girls at that school.
Her school.
She was trying.
"So then I was like no way dude." Caitlyn laughed.
Mitchie chuckled about a fight their group of friends had at the cafeteria. She was anxious to come back after the holidays. That was a new deal she had to make with her parents to gain more trust. She preferred to study at home, she could, if she wanted, to graduate this year. Mitchie was still on the fence about that.
They heard a knock on the door, "come in." Mitchie said taking a break from her make up skills.
"We're heading for dinner in town, after dropping by the office, then dad and I will be going out of town for a late showing of that new movie your dad's been raving about. If you need anything, give us a call. We'll be home late. Dinner is in the oven. Love you sweetheart. And you look beautiful caitlyn."
"Thank you Mrs. T."
"Love you too mom."
Connie closed the door behind her,
Caitlyn looked at her buzzing phone as she gasped, "I need a glass of water!"
Mitchie arched her eyebrow, "okay, I'll go grab you a bottle of water. Sparking or regular?"
"I'll go down and grab it! Thanks you want anything?"
"From my own kitchen? No I'm good." Mitchie said, cocking a hip, raising an eyebrow.
Caitlyn chuckled, nervously, "okay. I'll be back."
"Hey! Bring back old Caitlyn when you come back up! Please and thank you."
Mitchie went back to checking her phone, still not a single text message from that stupid giant. Was she too forward? She shouldnt have kissed him but she also couldnt help but not. Seising the moment was her new motto.
Caitlyn came back up, out of breath and chugging her water.
"You okay?" Mitchie asked.
"Yeah… Totally.. Why wouldnt i be?"
"Ookay?"
"Lets finish me up! Then you should get dolled up!"
"Why?"
"Everyone who gets ready with their friends takes pictures together! It's literally a cheesy Intagram thing. Everyone's doing it."
Mitchie looked at Caitlyn's social feed. She wondered if Shane was going, if he was getting dressed up for someone, someone who isnt a complete mess.
"He isnt going." Cait caught her silence, "he had offers, like his ex-girlfriend Natalia but he made a scene in the parking lot. A lot of people were shocked."
"What happened?" Mitchie coughed, trying to keep her voice leveled and uninterested.
"Apparently she had been doing everything in her will power to get him to cave into her. Just like the other times. But he wasnt budging. He held his foot down towards her. Something that no one had ever seen. Everyone even had their phones out and recorded her storming off."
Mitchie heard a loud screeching scream and heels hitting the pavement hard. She peeked and seen Natalia's jet balck hair swaying away and her usual bright green eyes were dark with something Mitchie had grown to get used to. Natalia was fucking livid.
"Wow. Go Shane."
"A little birdy, seen the exchange between you and Shane. At the coffee shop." Caitlyn wiggled her eyebrows.
"Stop that. I think that ended up being a mistake. He hasnt reached out since."
"Hes probably been busy with him-"
"Dont you dare finish that sentence. Virgin ears."
CAitlyn laughed as she rolled her eyes, "drama queen."
"That is my name." Mitchie said as she finished applying the last bit of make up.
Caitlyn decided to go with her natural curls and decided that accessories were going to be the stand out.
"Wow! You're really good!"
"Thanks, I tried. I wont be offended if you hate it and are only trying to be nice to me right now."
"No. I'm being serious."
Mitchie tried to be humble, but her confidence that she was the best at everything was threatening to spill out.
"Now! Let's go find something for you! Sit and do your make up and hair!"
Mitchie sighed as she grabbed the seat Cait was just on. 'What the hell.' She had no other plans and her night seemed like she was going to have a long night in by herself. Just like every night before.
Mitchie was keeping it simple, since she didnt know what dress Caitlyn was going to find. A light shimmer on her eyelids, a high cat eye, some highlighter, and chapstick. She was going to go bold with her lip color but she needed to know what color dress.
Her hair was washed recently so most of her natural curls were still intact. She shook her hair out of her bun and created an overflow braid. She grabbed her gold rings and placed them in various fingers. She snapped the anklet close as Caitlyn came back holding a black strapless number with a pair of red pumps. She had her biker jacket behind her back.
"That dress with that jacket?"
"Actually… the jacket is for me. Can i please borrow it? I'll bring it back after dry cleaning it and ill watch it like a hawk."
"Sure." Mitchie smiled.
Caitlyn had changed into her red poofy dress and slipped on the cheetah print flats Mitchie had promised her. She was fixing her dress when Mitchie slipped out of the bathroom and looked down.
"Wow. I hate you." Cait teased.
"What? Why?"
"You look that good without even trying! How!?"
"It's a gift."
The girls laughed as they took pictures, and made a few snaps. After a few pictures that had the stamp of approval from both girls, Cait posted them with a caption that read 'besties'. The feedback that was instant and were overflowing set Mitchie into a smile frenzy. All the comments and likes were a positive note in her last couple of crappy months.
"Well Zane is probably wondering where I'm at. I got to go. Thank you so much for everything. I really can't wait to have my best friend at school. And everyone's waiting for your return." Caitlyn said as they embraced.
Mitchie smiled and walked Cait downstairs.
"I can see myself out. I'll call you tomorrow and I'll pick you up for some brunch?"
"Sure. Have fun tonight!" Mitchie said with a tight lipped smile.
Caitlyn waved as she took her things and walked out the door.
Mitchie sighed as she locked the door behind her. Setting the alarm, and grabbed a cold water for herself. Time to go upstairs and clean off today's events.
Her phone buzzed in her hand, mid way up the staircase.
"Hey bug, we've rented a last minute air b . We won't be home till late. Don't forget your medicine. We love you very much. Have fun tonight sweetie."
Mitchie snickered. Fun? What the fuck was that?
Mitchie's mind was almost like a ticking time bomb. She felt the loneliness rise, her stomach felt uneasy. She was ready to go to the bathroom and spill this morning's small breakfast. She opened her bedroom door with a huff and threw herself on her bed. She bounced lightly.
Tears were welling up in her eyes. Threatening to spill over.
No. You're better than that. Stop it.
Her heart raced and she gasped when she heard a knock at her balcony door.
She quickly dialed 911 and heard the line ring. She got up and walked slowly towards her doors. That's when she saw a silhouette of a body.
"911? What's the location of your emergency?"
Mitchie peeked through her blinds when she gasped and hung up.
"What in the world are you doing here?"
